Chat Away

Five things:

(1) My boys need to sign this fella – look at his ball control.

(2) Anyone who mentions (proper) football will have to eat one my pasta dishes.

(3) Burnley. So, zip it.

(4) Back in a bit, food time.

(5) Chat away.

LL, your last thread about Billo was depressing, but I don’t doubt for a second that you are right. Chips, how was your walk with Danny? Are you watching Grantchester on Masterpiece? There is a gorgeous back lab named Dickens on that show. And a hunky Anglican priest.

“What grabbed me was to wonder what about this country would make a black woman who’s ancestors were slaves and had to flee the south due to Jim Crow proud. And why the history Rev. Wright describes would lead a black/brown person to say anything other than “God Damn America!” Perhaps the racism of people like Giuliani and Williamson is actually rooted in exactly that kind of unconscious projection. They know how horribly this country has treated people of color and can’t imagine themselves being patriotic under those circumstances.

And so I decided to remind myself of one of the times when Barack Obama grounded his agenda as President into his own description of what makes the United States exceptional.”

Pf, I think you ascribe too much thought to racists thug like Giuliani. From the background article about him, he was taught at an early age to think too much of himself and as an adult he has always presented himself to the world as completely without empathy. When he ‘cleaned’ the homeless out of NYC, he didn’t care how they were treated or what became of them. Only thing that matter is that he would be the great mayor who rid the sidewalks of the derelicts.
At heart, people like him are cowards, like all bullies. He would not have endured under slavery.

Prettyfoot, since I am here late, I am sure you probably will not get a chance to read my comment. But I just wanted to thank you for your tweet and for sharing Smartypants’ excellent post. People like Giuliani and Williamson would rather sweep under the rug the history of the persecution of Native Americans, the inhuman system of African enslavement and the Jim crow system, which either condoned or tolerated the terror of lynchings of thousands of African Americans. As far as I am concerned, Rev. Wright was right; just like the great Black Abolitionist, Frederick Douglass, was right in his 1852 speech, “The Meaning of July 4th for the Slave.” It is worthy recalling what Douglass said:

” What to the American Slave, is your fourth of July? I answer; a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the
gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy
license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciation of tyrants,
brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and
thanksgivings, with all your religious parades and solemnity, are to him mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and
hypocrisy — a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages.”

I dare any one to question the patriotism of Frederick Douglass who tirelessly recruited Blacks to fight in the war to save the United States–including sending his two sons to fight in that war. By the way, unlike Rudy Giuliani, Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and most of the loudmouths right wing chicken-hawks, Rev. Wright served in the military. He was ready and willing to sacrifice his life for this country, despite the fact that he and his ancestors have historically been the victims of its “gross injustice and cruelty.” Rev. Wright, like Frederick Douglass, earned the right to critique the gross injustices of his country. And just like the great white abolitionist, William Lloyd Garrison, Rev. Wright was “harsh as truth, and uncompromising as justice.”

Oh Dudette, I loved Miss Kitty. We watched Gunsmoke. My folks never mentioned her owning a bar and us being Quakers. I never heard them say anything bad about the program. Sure makes me wondered nowadays. Also love Sidney Poitier, what a great actor and a good man. Thanks for always bringing these to our attention.

        GA MTM,

JackieG’s husband would be proud of you.

Had a discussion this morning about Western movies and TV shows with JackieG this morning, who will be off to watch a Western movie film festival tonight.

JoJo responded by saying she’s a 3rd generation Californian — pretty rare for these parts. A former co-worker’s family was 5th generation Californians (and this was 30 years ago) — she lived in Compton when it was all-white — had no idea that this was true of Compton back in the day.

Gooid afternoon TOD! Thanks Bob for the info on Iran. I have been holding my breath on this since the election in November, so afraid the Rs would find a way to screw it up. But like others, will celebrate when we see it. In the meantime, signs are positive that everyone is working hard.

Great response tweet, JOB! What Jeffrey Toobin doesn’t realize is that Justice Thomas is the ideal Black man for right wing Republicans. As long as as he votes to support right wing causes, even though his votes go against the interests of Blacks and other oppressed people, Justice Thomas is, according to right wingers, an outstanding patriot. He doesn’t have to ask questions because his vote is always pre-determined. Given that reality, who cares whether Justice Thomas asks a question or not.

We have been talking about Iran negotiations and Bibi – just noticed, via Smartypants, that the 1st negotiations deadline is March 1st so there IS a chance cold water could be thrown on Bibi’s speech. 😀 😀 THAT would make me soooo happy! I have been waiting years now to be able to tell Bibi, virtually, where he can go.

Also on the horizon, Speaker Boehner has PM Netanyahu scheduled to address Congress on March 3rd, just 4 days after that deadline hits. Something I hadn’t noticed before is that the first deadline for the negotiations with Iran comes on Sunday, March 1st. That means that if the negotiations are successful, an overall political framework for an agreement will be announced 2 days before Netanyahu’s speech (negotiators have until July 1st to reach agreement on the technical details) and 2 days after the deadline to approve DHS funding.

    Hello all.

Just wanted to say that it seems to be a big “coincident ” that Republicans are either denying PBO’s love/loyalty to the US, don’t know if he is a Christian ( Gov Walker ), Jeb Bush’s don’t question PBO’s motives but his policies and all the other conservative blogs and trolls saying Giuliani was right. I think it has a lot to do with the upcoming Netanyahu speech to the US Congress. The GOP are trying to whip up the same old suspicion and opposition to soften the criticism and try to move more people to say what they did was OK.
Then, after the speech will push more of their anti-Iran and try to push PBO and public opinion on Iran , Syria and war in general.
I believe this is all part of a calculated strategy.

    Interesting Fact……
    JFK was young, but assassinated.
LBJ got all he could done as the Nation Mourned JFK. Then Vietnam.
Nixon got in for ‘Nam and Dems Bickering. Nixon was ran out of office on Aug 8th, 1974.
Ford Never elected, Pardoned Nixon and out GFord went.
Carter came in as a Good Honest Guy……Iran and the Hostage issue, plus Ted Kennedy’s Challenge……did him in.
Reagan, March 31st, an attempt on his life gave him a Huge Acting Boost with the people.
Dukkakis(sp) Gave GH Bush a Life line…..then followed by The Gulf War…..91% approval rating, Bubba did him in in 1992.
Clinton’s triangulation was enough for 2 terms…..but has given Us NFATA, DOMA, DADT, Deregulation of so Many things…..MONICA, House Impeachment…….Etc.
GWBush was the product, engineered by JEB and KHarris in FL with the backing of The Rehnquist Court……9/11 made 2004 possible. That gave Us Financial Meltdown, 2 wars, a nearly bankrupt Nation.
2008 and 2012 Obama! Obama! Obama!
Rightie and the News Media losing their collective Minds.
