Morning. I am doing a happy dance because there is a now a new furnace actually being installed in my basement and my days of freezing may be over. At first the repairmen deposited the furnace in the driveway and drove away and I thought, Oh God, are we supposed to put it in ourselves?!!! But they’re now here and fingers crossed that all will go well.
Seems petty to complain about cold when people are dying in Ukraine and Syria, but it’s no fun to freeze.

Keep us posted, jackie. We’re still waiting for our contractor to return from vacation to put in our duct work. We have become very skilled at maneuvering fans and space heaters to stay comfortable. The only place that is unlivable: my home office. Oh, well.

      • 64 jackiegrumbacher
        February 18, 2015 at 10:14 am

57, people ought to finish jobs that are pending before they go off on vacation or else subcontract the work. Seems to me that’s basic good business policy. I’m sure you won’t recommend this firm to anyone else, but if they’d done a quick and efficient job you would have been a good voice for them in the community. It’s just stupid, especially when something as vital as heat in winter is concerned.

        • 65 57andfemale
          February 18, 2015 at 12:55 pm

It’s not his fault, actually. We had put off the duct work because I wasn’t sure if I needed to hold on to the extra cash I had. By the time I called him to finish the work he was on vacation. I still do not think I misunderstood him, which now apparently was a misrepresentation of his availability. Mr. 57 is self-employed and it drives me crazy when he says he’ll have something done in a week and has no intention of doing so – it’s just to get the customer off his back. In all fairness there is virtually no competition for what he does, at the level that he does it. But it still drives me insane. And it is the reason that his idea of providing for my retirement years was getting me a full-time job with a crazy person!

We have the furnace blasting heat at the basement ceiling and we are able to get a tiny bit through the open holes that eventually will be functioning ducts. Thank God Mr. 57 and I did well in what I call “9th grade science”: we have fans pointing to the ceiling to distribute heat, fans blowing the heat from the basement, etc. I’m just tired of it now. I want fully functioning heat, and I need an office that isn’t in the 50’s.

That being said, are you functional yet?

That guy Josh Kraushaar at the National Journal who wrote that piece about Obama’s legacy is a right wing hack posing as an objective pundit. This guy predicted in October 2012 that Romney would win all of the swing states based on his gut. Every piece is about how great the republicans are and how bad the democrats are. He also accused the president of opposing the Jewish state when he really is opposing Bibi and his far right wing government. Bibi does not represent all of the Jewish people.

Pf, if Joe Biden actually declares, I am going with him. If not, Martin O’Malley. Right now other candidates are wary of the Clinton wrath. If she stumbles early, I think you’ll see a lot of people stepping up. Biden needs the least prep as a candidate because he’s a master campaigner and is actually loved in key mid-Atlantic states.

      February 18, 2015 at 12:31 pm

      My two cents, just MHO.

The news media are the ones who have declared it necessary to report on the movements, speeches, tweets, etc., of assumed “candidates” (MSM assumes people are candidates based on how many $$$ are in campaign war chests).

MSM reaped a cash bonanza when Senator Barack Obama announced his candidacy 8 years ago — they couldn’t get enough of the excitement and gossip.

This once-in-a-lifetime event has now become business as usual for MSM — who fail to realize that they could re-assign every.single political reporter to another beat and no one would notice.

Nobody but MSM echo chamber and donors gives a flying fig about Nov 2016 now. MSM could assign analysis of donors dollars to one of their business reporters — they don’t need dedicated political reporters about non-existent campaigns until after Labor Day this year, when Iowa/New Hampshire/Nevada/South Carolina, etc., start to mean something.

meta, he is exactly what he said he would be. He just put on a flannel shirt, paraded his wife who gave a few bucks to Planned Parenthood once, and blanketed the air waves for a year with his folksy b.s. For those of you who don’t live in IL, there is nothing “folksy” about the people who live in the wealthy suburb of Chicago, Winnetka. Please.

This is what we get when we don’t come out to vote. And those that do, who had problems with Gov. Quinn not fulfilling their every whim, thinking that the man who said “I will be Scott Walker on steroids” was going to be better than Quinn. There is no measure for my outrage.

57, we had very similar problems in PA with Tom Corbett and people planned for years to defeat him and finally did in 2014 despite the so-called Republican wave. Start now by urging your state party to groom and promote serious candidates and RAISE FUNDS. Tom Wolf is having great success reversing the devastation Corbett wrought on this state and that can happen in IL, too, if the planning begins early. If you’re a registered Dem in IL, you have a perfect right to badger your state committee into action.

Rauner is ignorant of government and sneers at the very idea. I don’t think he will be able to fool the people into a second term. We have Democratic super-majorities but in Illinois the Dems can be very crooked and easily bought. My fear is that our all-powerful speaker, Mike Madigan, is getting ready to retire (he’s 73 I believe) and can be bought by Rauner. However, Rauner has already started by thumbing his nose at the legislature and the state in general, as if 1/3 of the eligible voters gives him a mandate.

If Mike Madigan’s daughter Lisa (our Attorney general) decides to run, it will be no contest. She is a different breed entirely, an excellent administrator and is beloved in the state. Any job she wants, she has. She has young children and has not sought higher office. When she’s ready, the state is ready. Everyone believes her heart is to be governor rather than senator.

I will become more involved in the state committee but it’s truly an old boy’s club. However, you have to start somewhere. Preaching to the choir doesn’t get us very far. IL Dems have to be less complacent. I heed your call, jackie.

      • February 18, 2015 at 9:59 am

It’s so disturbing that emoprog purists and lazy Dems are surrendering our government to RWNJs and they don’t even seem to know it.

You are absolutely correct, 57. He never lied about who he is or what he wanted to do. ( a rarity for repugs) In typical fashion prior to the elections, we had unions and other dems too busy attacking Quinn, than going after Rauner.

          February 18, 2015 at 11:33 am

Arapaho, I think we’re going to see a lot of announcements coming from AG Holder about a lot of planned actions, all of which are designed to anger the GOP and make them feel that Loretta Lynch is a good idea. After all, Holder will stick around irritating them at every turn if they don’t go for Loretta. This latest move may be all the incentive they need.

Chips congrats on a very legitimate and well earned first.
57, hope the duct work gets put in soon.
Tomorrow we will probably set a record for lowest high on that date.
As far as our wonderful governor is concerned, we, at least, can be thankful we have a Dem controlled legislature. Rauner isn’t going to get what he wants. There are already protests going on about his requested budget.
Plus, Lisa Madigan, our AG (and I would love to see her go against Kirk) has already stopped an executive order of his from being implemented.

    • 125 57andfemale
      February 18, 2015 at 11:32 am

japa, I think Lisa’s heart is in the governorship. She did indeed make mincemeat out of Rauner’s executive order because he has no interest in governing or how government or laws work. He’ll surround himself with sycophants instead of real advisers.

Thank God Rauner hasn’t even made an attempt to work with the Dem leadership. Even crooked Madigan will not be able to get behind this fascist, austerity craziness. Hell, Madigan hated Quinn who had the temerity to stand up to him and did NOTHING to help him get reelected. He certainly isn’t going to be treated like a third class citizen from the likes of Mr. Flannel from Winnetka.

We need to defeat Kirk. He can squeak by with an even marginally weak candidate. Sigh.

        February 18, 2015 at 11:42 am

Just read that Duckworth is considering a run. She would not be as wishy-washy as Alex was. She’ll rip the “moderate” label right off Kirk. And she would use his comments, which he somewhat took back, about the Dems being responsible for an attack if the DHS funding bill doesn’t pass as is to push him against a wall.

        • 127 57andfemale
          February 18, 2015 at 11:47 am

I heard that Duckworth was considering a run. She has grown mightily as a candidate. And most important, she would be open to what Dems/progressives want in their Senator. The other possibilities I heard about did not warm my heart – more blue dog b.s.

As I tweeted out a few days ago, the current GOP doesn’t want us to go back to the 1950’s or even the 1850’s. They want us to go back to the 850’s where most people were serfs, the royalty had their mercenary bodyguards and the Church dictated all knowledge.
