Thanks, NerdyW – that first link was really a great read! I read it earlier when it was first shared and thought it quite appropriate – if the schools &/ families are not educating – that the judge shared some important history.

  9. February 15, 2015 at 5:33 pm

Thanks so much NW – that judge’s speech was a masterful history lesson. This should be required reading as part of the HS history curriculum. And every person running for ANY law enforcement position in the US, be it at the federal, state, county, city or district level – should be required to know this, and pass a test on it before assuming any office/position.

I think they are more than just lazy and lame. They are vicious and dangerous. And the sooner people realize this, the better off we will be.

Exactly. They are a major reason that people are ignorant, angry and full of fear, because they are now PLAYING to that fear and anger. Many people still simply believe what they see or hear on the “teevee” because they either lack the ability or inclination to challenge it.

Indeed, hopefruit2. A great many in the so called mainstream media are aggressively waging a propaganda war against President Obama. Almost from day one of his presidency, most of the U.S. media, with minor exceptions, deliberately made a conscious decision to join forces with the Republicans to undercut everything President Obama tried to accomplish.

Height Challenged Rand Paul said that HRC has to answer for Monica…….
Well JEB has got to answer for Prescott, those before him, GH, GW, Neal, the other son and for JEB’s records.
      Fair is Fair…….., Yes?

      • February 16, 2015 at 1:33 am

Exactly. And Rand Paul himself has to answer for his father, Ron Paul, who had no problem hanging out with white racists and publishing their racist diatribes in his newsletter.

  14. February 15, 2015 at 5:55 pm

I have long come to realize that those people, those racists people will always criticize this President and yes this First Lady too. They could walk across water and save a bus load of conservative children and the right wing will still criticize them. That’s how hate does. I was no fan of Laura Bush or Barbara Bush, but I never disrespected them the way they have done our FLOTUS. I remember all the crap about President Obama not wearing a jacket in the oval office, he was seen with his feet on the desk, they didn’t say a darn thing when it was shown that Republican Presidents did the same thing. These people won’t come right out and say what they want to say, which is that black man is diminishing the presidency because he is black.

    Stellar tweet roundup, NW.

As usual, you cover such a wide-range of topics on a “slow-news” Sunday. Greatly appreciated.

Agree with @JuddLegum — our news media seem to think that it’s business as usual in the USA when one teenager and two others barely out of their teens are executed in their home… over a parking space. Regardless of what religion they were, this is not a random act of violence. But the fact that MSM essentially blame the honorable, hard-working contributors to our society for their religion. Unbelievable.

How many sane people think that being executed because of parking dispute is something to be dismissed as meaningless?

I also hate to turn on the radio news, since it is filled with the unspeakable acts by ISIL — literally makes me sick to my stomach.

Thanks for the news roundup, NW.

January 8, 1811 in Louisiana Territory, the largest slave insurrection in U.S. History began. After their defeat, many of the 500 rebelling slaves were mutilated, decapitated, and burned alive. We have a dark history of terrorism against Blacks in this country that matches the inhumanity against others currently seen by Daesh.

I am one of those people who wishes that Team Obama would “go dark” & stop talking/updating world about the Iranian Nuclear talks until they have a final result. I want them to take the same secrecy they took with the Cuban deal or Osama hunt. Reason: there are so many routing for failure

I hope President Obama calls Boehner to the Whitehouse and lays down the law about this Netanyahu speech conspiracy. Boehner violated the Logan act and the full weight of what that means should be pounded into him. He committed treason.

    • February 15, 2015 at 6:27 pm

Hi Deb, violating the Logan Act, which (thought I’m not a lawyer) I think Boehner did, is not treason. It’s plenty serious enough, however, and I agree with you he should be held accountable before the law.

I am not halfway through the tweets yet – everyone will probably be asleep before I finish. An amazing collection of news and history from the world’s best collector of tweets.

So just to add a couple of thoughts

While PBO spends his last 2 years in the white house doing good for all men, John Boehner is spending his last 2 years as speaker doing as much evil as he can because he could not stop the American people electing a good man – twice.

The story of Sundown Towns is long – I was confounded by the number and location of such towns. Reading through the history it becomes obvious that “blaming the victim” has been the bigot’s solution for a very long time – and it continues today.

The Judge’s speech – perhaps the most telling – his reaction to those who wrote to tell him about the wonderful people who committed this murder.

Thank you so much NW – history and current events. It is a joy to live in the time of Obama.

    Duh ….

“One of the main reasons for the decision to limit the information the U.S. shares with Israel on the nuclear talks is a fear of leaks. The Americans fear that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will make use of the information given to Israel for his own political needs, and will try to undermine the talks between Iran and the big powers.”

This goes to the conversation here,

A Mississippi state lawmaker said he opposed putting more money into elementary schools because he came from a town where “all the blacks are getting food stamps and what I call ‘welfare crazy checks.’ They don’t work.”
In an interview with the Clarion-Ledger regarding education funding, state Rep. Gene Alday (R) stated his opposition to a push to increase funding to improve elementary school reading scores. Alday implied that increasing education funding for children in black families would be pointless.
Alday continued, saying that when he was mayor of Walls, MS, that the times he’d gone to the emergency room had taken a long time. “I laid in there for hours because they (blacks) were in there being treated for gunshots,” he told the newspaper.

I’m done apologizing for the ignorance of these people. They will never apologize for being stupid and ignorant. We just have to vote in such huge numbers as to make this cancer a non issue…then they need to all die off.

May I interrupt this serious thread to ask you all to think good thoughts for me:) I am on the verge of adopting another Great Dane and my home visit is tonight. They come and check and make sure that our home is suitable for a Great Dane…and that I don’t live in a tent or something:) She is in Tucson right now, but if I pass the house test, I could be driving down there tomorrow to see the new little one! I hope she picks me… ( the dog) It’s been 7 months already since I had to put my beloved Simi down….I think she would want me to rescue another one now.

  33. February 15, 2015 at 7:44 pm

    So true …

“This issue is better judged from the other side of the looking glass. What we actually see today is a standard of medieval behavior upheld by modern fanatics who, like the crusaders, seek both religious and political power through violent means. They offer a ghastly and ghostly reminder of what the Western world might look like had there never been religious reformations, the Enlightenment and, above all, the separation of church and state.”

Hope all of you read Susan Jacoby’s excellent article.

    • February 16, 2015 at 2:39 am

Well, JOB, the stupidity of these right wingers, who think they are so smart, is absolutely breathtaking. This guy, by invoking Socrates and Plato, thinks that he was making a smart remark. If we had a credible media, an alert reporter should have asked this stupid Congressman at least three questions: (1) Was he, like Plato, trained on a rock? (2) Does he thinks Congress could save tons of money by getting rid of computers, printers, fax machines, etc., and substituting them with rocks? (3) Does he know which century he is living in?

Good afternoon, evening….wherever you are, and whatever time it is. Haven’t been here since early morning. I spent the afternoon reading “Power Forward” by Reggie Love. I went to the library about 2:00, brought the book home, and read the entire thing! It is good. Well written, easy to read, and warm. After working with PBO seven years, Reggie admires him…….one of three men he admires most: his father, Coach K of Duke and PBO. An easy read, interesting view of the campaign and first years. However, it is really about Reggie’s maturation, and the part these three men played in that maturation. Also, some interesting vignettes about campaigning. He also explains why he left, and who gave him the advice about knowing when to leave. There are no “secrets” revealed, nothing detrimental or confidential. A nice relief.

Today in her prayer, our associate minister said that we needed to remember the three Muslim young people shot in N.C., and that their names needed to be said aloud in our church, which she did, and she made me cry with what she said. I immediately thought of my two students in composition class. Sometimes I wish that everyone here could be at church with me…..it is that unusual and loving.

“Heavy on their shoulders is the weight of victory. Each day they are reminded, in prayer, in discussions, that the loss of Donbass or the further pushing of the front lines will mean the amputation of another part of Ukraine. If they lose, then it will be an existential loss for the Ukrainian identity.

Here, they are certain, with no pretense, that their enemy is not Donbass, but Russia itself.”

    Well worth reading ….

    • February 15, 2015 at 8:43 pm

      The facts are inescapable ….

“Russian-terrorist forces continue to flagrantly violate the ceasefire conditions of the Minsk agreements.

Terrorists, mercenaries, and Russian soldiers keep firing at the positions of Ukrainian troops and civilian objects from virtually all types of weapons – firearms, barrel artillery, multiple rocket launchers. Enemy attempts to attack have been observed.

The enemy is most active in shelling in the direction of Debaltseve.”
