Thanks for the picture, JER, though I have to say all that greenery in the middle of winter is just not right! OTH, I can accept it since it probably means Pres O has gotten in some good golfing hours.

Yes, i will repeat what i have said here before: i really, really, …… , despise putin! I think that Russia’s war against Ukraine will not end until putin feels some political vulnerabilities at home. This means that western nations must focus some energy in breaking through the propaganda machine & also expose exactly how much he & his cronies have robbed Russia’s economy.

Muslim-hating man rams Missouri teen with SUV, severing his legs and killing him

    05 DEC 2014 AT 10:55 ET

A 15-year-old boy died on Thursday night in spite of doctors’ efforts to save his life after he was deliberately struck by a car in a collision that severed both of his legs.

According to Kansas City, Missouri’s WDAF-TV, the boy was exiting the Somali Center of Kansas City with a friend when a driver in his 30s rammed his car into them both. The driver reportedly targeted the boys because of their Muslim faith.

The attack took place on Thursday at around 5:30 p.m. as the boys were getting into a parked car.

“It became pretty clear that this was not an accidental crash, there is a considerable amount of evidence that leads us to believe it was intentional,” said Sergeant Bill Mahoney of the Kansas City Police Department.

The second boy was not seriously hurt in the impact, but the deceased 15-year-old’s legs were severed at the scene and he reportedly lost a tremendous amount of blood. Paramedics rushed him to Children’s Mercy Hospital where a surgical team labored in vain to save him.

The suspect reportedly rammed the boys and the second car, then tried to flee the scene, but his vehicle was too badly damaged. Police said that he then tried to run away, but was apprehended.

The boy’s family and other people involved with the Somali Center told WADF that the suspect has been threatening them for months, even waving a gun at some attendees and telling them he was going to kill them for being Muslim.

“A month or two ago he came to the Somali mall, two blocks from here. Things got bad, they started arguing and he pulled a gun,” said Abdul Mohamed, a man who knows the victim, to WDAF.

The victim’s name has not been revealed, but he was reportedly the son of the current head of the Somali Center.

They need to throw the book of justice at these racists, to dissuade the rest of them from doing these vile acts. A 15 year old child – dead, because of a racist. How terrible.

Day 2 of a 5 day, 12 hour night shift for me. It’s Carnival time here in NOLA, but I volunteered to work the night shifts, so that the new employee, who’s just moved to NOLA from Michigan, could enjoy her first Mardi Gras. So this makes it the 2nd Mardi Gras since I’ve moved back that I will “miss”. I told my co-worker today, that this is the gonna be the last time I voluntarily work Mardi Gras or any other holiday for which I am not assigned.

Anyway, it’s 62 degrees, nice and crisp here in NOLA and no rain, perfect parading weather.

    It’s Carnival Time

Hi Bfr. Questions for you –

      1) Does renting a website mean that you have automatic exclusivity on the website’s name?
      2) Is a domain name a separate thing (I remember you having one sometime in the past) and how do you go about purchasing one/your name, so no one else can?

      • February 14, 2015 at 10:05 pm

A ‘domain name’ is ‘property’ – it can be owned by an individual or an organization. Chips, for instance, owns the domain name “theobamadiary.com” I own several domain names.

A ‘web site’ is one way to utilize a ‘domain name.’ Another way to utilize a domain name is for email, e.g., @theobamadiary.com

One does not ‘rent’ a ‘web site.’ One can pay a third party, like bluehost.com to ‘host’ a website for a particular domain.

Chips is using Word Press to ‘host’ http://www.theobamadiary.com as a blog, i.e., a website that enables her to post content and, as she approves, allows others to contribute content, comments, etc.

        Hope that helps, VC.

          February 14, 2015 at 10:18 pm

Thanks, it does help. From past experience I’m sure you remember how slow I am at grasping these businessy-techie things. 😀

So, if you’re paying to have your site hosted, but you didn’t pay for the site name separately, do you still own the domain name for that site or do you have to pay for that name in a separate transaction. I know someone who is getting a website done, but it occurred to me today that they may not have bought their ‘domain’ name. I’m actually throwing around the term ‘domain name’ while not sure if it’s simply a synonym for ‘site name’.

          • February 14, 2015 at 10:39 pm

The most important transaction is to control ownership of the domain name, VC. That is a specific financial transaction. A domain name is not merely a ‘site name,’ it is a specific Internet Protocol address analogous to your home postal address or a P.O. address. It is real ‘property’ albeit at it’s essence it is a highly structured, and absolutely precise arrangement of 1s and 0s.

Once you control (own) the domain name, you can shop around for web, email, …. hosting services.

Thanks again, Bfr, very much. Seems like I’ll have to speak to the someone as the approach seems to have been backwards. Been paying to host website for over two years and just now having it set up, etc. etc. but I have never heard them mention anything about a domain name. Okay; appreciate your input.

              • February 14, 2015 at 11:08 pm

Glad you found it helpful, VC. Simple rule on ‘The Internet’ – OWN the domain name, first. All else flows downstream from that piece of property.

Just like when arriving in the village, I’m usually a couple of steps behind. Of course, I’m hoping when I speak to the someone tomorrow they’ll say they knew all that and had already purchased the domain name. *That* would be a pleasant and welcomed surprise.

Hello Bob! All is o.k. with me. I truly appreciate your checking on me. I’ve not commented much lately because my daughter, who is writing her PhD thesis, has taken over my home computer. Hers was badly damaged in her move from NY to CA. My laptop has not been working either. I, however, religiously read the blog on my work computer; but I very rarely post comments at work. I am here today because my daughter is with her boyfriend on Valentine’s day.

I may not comment much, but I truly appreciate what Chips, Nerdy Wonka, and all of you who post here at TOD to enlighten us. I can’t go through the day without TOD. I especially rely on your excellent posts for all the news about Ukraine and the Middle East. I also wholeheartedly support your call for the country, and especially the white community, to embark on a serious reconciliation journey to atone for the racial injustices that has plagued this country for centuries.

Today, as part of Black history month, I took part in a discussion about the legacy of the great Black abolitionist, Frederick Douglass, on his 197 birthday. We discussed his famous, and hard hitting,1852 speech about “The Meaning Of July Fourth For the Slaves.” We also discussed his uncompromising editorials in the North Star in support of Women’s rights. But I also shared with the group this forgotten editorial Frederick Douglass wrote in his 1849 “North Star” in opposition to calls for getting rid of Black people and colonizing them back in Africa, the Caribbean or South America. I wanted to share this quote from Douglass’ 1849 statement with you because I believe it reinforces what you’ve been calling for:

“We deem it a settled point that the destiny of the colored man is bound up with that of the white people of this country…. It is idle–worse than idle to think of our expatriation, or removal….We are here, and here we are likely to be. To imagine that we shall be eradicated is absurd and ridiculous. We can be remodified, changed, and assimilated, but never extinguished. We repeat…that we are here; and that this is our country; and the question for the philosophers and statesmen of the land ought to be, what principles should dictate the policy of the action toward us? We shall neither die out, nor be driven out; but shall go with this people, either as a testimony against them, or as an evidence in their favor throughout their generations. We are clearly on their hands and must remain there forever.”

Clearly, if I am not misreading him, Frederick Douglass was saying, as you have so ably stated in your calls for reconciliation, that until whites in the United States embrace policies that promote justice for the “colored” people, then, for future “generations” of whites, the continued oppression of “colored” people will “forever” remain on “their hands,”

Again, I thank you for all your humanitarian work and for making sure that we never overlook Czar Putin’s unmistakable military aggression to take over Ukraine. Thank God for the heroic resistance of the people of Ukraine.

To repeat, I may not comment much, but I truly love TOD. I think Chips and Nerdy Wonka are truly magnificent. They bring us so much information that is often overlooked/neglected by the so called mainstream media. I also happen to agree with most of the comments posted here, so I have no urgent need to post. Most importantly, I feel so blessed to have had the chance to witness the Obama Presidency. I was born 3 months after Harry S. Truman became President. I vaguely remember the Presidency of Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, although I was a teenager (15) in 1961 when he left office. My conscious experience with presidents began with JFK, but he too died when I was still a teen. I have, however, closely known nine Presidents, from LBJ to BHO. And as far as I am concerned, President Obama is one of the best Presidents in my life time. It’s so gratifying to come to this blog to read comments by people who share my sentiments. I also must confess that I love NW’s sense of humor. I always look forward to her smart, but sometimes “outlandish/twisted” funnies to end the day.

        Hi nath!!!

Well, when you do comment you always bring us so much insight and good spirit!!

Am grateful that you shared the Frederick Douglass 1849 statement. I’ve never read it before. And, I fully agree with your interpretation “…. that whites in the United States embrace policies that promote justice for the “colored” people, then, for future “generations” of whites, the continued oppression of “colored” people will “forever” remain on “their (our, in my case) hands.””

Hope your daughter is making good progress on her Ph.D. thesis and all the best to you and your family.

        Happy Presidents’ Day Weekend!!
