Gentrification Is the Real Scandal Surrounding Jackie Robinson West

Dave Zirin on February 11, 2015 – 8:16 PM ET

The fact that United States Little League baseball champs Jackie Robinson West have been stripped of their 2014 title, for using “players who live outside the geographic area that the team represents” is a slap in the face to everyone trying to keep baseball, a sense of community, and even public education alive in the cities of the United States. This would read like scabrous satire from the pen of a writer whose DNA was part Runyon and part Baldwin if not for the fact that there are very real children being victimized by this decision in the city of Chicago.

As for the decision itself, ironies abound. Jackie Robinson West was the first entirely black team to represent the United States in the Little League World Series. And yes, waiting until Black History Month to strip JRW of their title is at best tin-eared. But that insult shouldn’t blind us to the greater injury. Recall their damnable offense: Jackie Robinson West didn’t use 16-year-old ringers or cork their bats. They had players suit up who lived “beyond their geographical boundary.” The fact that the adults in charge of JRW felt the need to breach this rule perhaps has something to do with the fact that today’s urban landscape supports baseball about as well as concrete makes proper soil for orchids. A plurality of Major Leaguers is made up of people from either the US suburbs or the baseball factories of the Dominican Republic. Many of the few African American players on Major League rosters actually come from the suburbs. This is because twenty-first-century neoliberal cities have gentrified urban black baseball to death. Boys and Girls Clubs have become bistros. Baseball fields are condos and in many cities, Little League is non-existent. The public funds for the infrastructure that baseball demands simply do not exist, but the land required for diamonds are the crown jewels of urban real estate. That’s what made JRW such a profound anomaly. In Chicago particularly, which under Mayor Rahm Emanuel has seen school closures and brutal cuts to physical education programs, their success made people believe that—with apologies to Tupac—flowers could in fact grow in concrete.

I reached out to Chicago Teachers Union Vice President Jesse Sharkey who said to me, “Mayor Rahm closed half a dozen schools in Jackie Robinson West’s part of the city, and tried to close the school, Marcus Garvey, where the founder of JRW—Joe Haley—worked. Then Chicago Public Schools cut funding for high school freshman sports, laid off a thousand teachers. CPS put forty kids in physical education classes and doesn’t even put a librarian in most of the school libraries in [the South Side district of] Auburn Gresham.”

I have always disliked Rahm Emanual. I kknow Chicago had problems, just like most of the major cities in the US. But to put that asshole in charge. Ick.

great advice from one of the architects of aap tsunami.

AAP should not get confused with the verdict. It is not a verdict just for good governance; that can be provided by any party. One does not need AAP for that.

AAP has to give good governance — that is the first condition for its existence — but it has to go beyond that. It has to provide a model for alternate politics. It has to evolve an alternate political culture.

It has to create an ecosystem in which clean politics is possible; in which affordable politics is possible; in which the transaction between the Citizen and State is transparent and without any vested interest; in which the Citizen and State are both equals and both treat each other as stakeholders in a participatory democracy, in which the State is not Goliath and the Citizen David.

AAP’s role in history will not be judged by the kind of administration it provides. If it could help change the system, if it could change the very nature of the well entrenched establishment, only then will it be remembered in history.

AAP can’t afford to play the role of a moderator. It has to act like an agent of change, a reformer.

change – that frigging word again

The job hunt continues. A lot more healthcare jobs now than there were a year ago.

A potent medicinal combination. Coffee is always my first drug of choice with a headache. I get “optical migraines” and my eye doctor told me that when the symptoms start, run, don’t walk to the coffee cup.

Gee, LL, you mean ACA might actually be a JOB CREATOR? Quelle surprise.

heh, as per indian mythology, gods will destroy the humans when they become insufferable. See, that’s why I am not keen on gods. I mean, who the fuck needs you, god, we are totally capable of destroying ourselves. No, thank you.

Why anyone still believes in a “god” that mankind used to understand a cosmos of which they were ignorant, is amazing to me. The great comparative religion scholar, Joseph Campell, said that a religion must, at its time and place, accept all that we know to be true, or it becomes a perversion. We can learn lessons for moral and ethical behavior from the fables and accept that it is mythology, but to believe that it is infallible truth is a perversion.

Of course I was raised as a secular Jew. It was all taught to me as mythology. No Jew in their right mind thought the Red Sea parted. It was a lesson in overcoming overwhelming difficulty. Of course, we were also taught that the “one god” was “superior” to multiple gods. But only in terms of it being a more unattainable spiritual quest. I was always taught to think, to question, to engage in debate.

That might be an old mirror with the spotting due to deterioration of the silver backing. WH is full of antiques & maybe no budgeting for an expensive re-silvering of an old mirror. Remember when the Repugs made the Obamas pay to fix some plumbing. Repugs don’t want to spend a peso on the WH as long as the Obamas are living there. Just suggesting….& maybe they should have used another mirror.

I recommend this read: McDermott talks about how businesses (and their lackeys, the GOP) want to try every trick in the book to NOT provide health insurance: i.e., the bill floating around to raise the working hours from 30 to 40 hours/week. How that will send workers to the Federal exchange and get us closer to single-payer.

      Very interesting take.

      February 12, 2015 at 1:15 pm

“I really think that the whole question here of whether we are going to have forty hour weeks is whether the employers want to give health insurance to their workers or not. In my view they don’t,” McDermott said. “We are talking about middle-class folks who are working 24 hours a week in two different jobs to hold on to their house and their family and their education. They are struggling like mad. And we are not getting any help from the Republicans.”

No, the whole (and only) question is where were these ‘middle-class folks’ in 2010, 2012 and 2014? (Also. too. likely in 2016). These thugs didn’t appear on stage by magic, ffs.

Following their fears and listening to the lies. This is why union people now hate unions. As if the corporate master is innocent in how the worker is treated. Used to be, Americans voted their economic interests regardless of party. Now it’s a faith-based wild-eyed article of faith instead of informed common sense. Amazing.

It is also about white vs. people of color. Corporate America and the republicans have done a great job of keeping Americans who would band together and be more powerful, divided by white v. everyone else….¨at least you are white.¨

Al-Qaeda linked fighters have seized an army base in southern Yemen, militants and officials say.

The Ansar al-Sharia group said they set off a bomb at the base in the central town Bayhan before capturing soldiers.

The attack comes amid fears that the country is plunging into chaos after Shia rebels took over the capital.

Shia Houthis have been expanding south from their northern stronghold, prompting clashes with al-Qaeda in Yemen (AQAP) and other Sunni groups.

The United Nations has warned that Yemen is on the brink of civil war.

The base is in Shabwa province, an al-Qaeda stronghold. It is reportedly home to more than 1,000 troops.

The militants captured heavy weaponry when they took the base, one official told the AFP news agency.

Tribal mediators were trying to convince the group to withdraw, the official added.
