Normally I would say, GM to all. But this has hardly been a good morning. As most of you know, I am a devout Catholic, but many blogs I visit have a lot of atheists who tend to mock any organized religion and particularly Christianity. One of the constant memes is that atheists don’t go and kill people for religious reasons, therefore atheists are more peaceful than religious nuts (and they usually imply that anybody who believes in God is a religious nut).

    Well, they are wrong again.

Ibrahim Awad Ibrahim al-Badri, had been arrested by US Forces-Iraq in early 2004 near Fallujah and been detained at Camp Bucca detention center under his name Ibrahim Awad Ibrahim al-Badry, as a “civilian internee”, from February until December 2004, when he was recommended for release by a Combined Review and Release Board. That December 2004 he was released, as ‘low level prisoner’.

      Where is he now ?

He is Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi….The leader of ISIL.

      Thanks Bush

Our media has a meltdown because one of the detainees swapped for Bergdahl used a cell phone….yet they have NEVER mentioned the leader of ISIL was once a prisoner of the US.

Reporting that would not support the media’s pro-GOP narrative, so it is ignored. Propaganda is both that which is reported (spun to elevate the GOP/or discourage Dems) and that which the media chooses to ignore (because it would be politically harmful to the GOP).

Muslim is becoming the new “Black” in this country. I hope people of color/other marginalized groups are able to see that the unfair treatment meted out to one group can very quickly be used against other groups. It is the proverbial “slippery slope”. Getting the benefit of the doubt is the foundation of white privilege. Demonized groups like Black folks and muslims are rarely if ever given the benefit of the doubt, and as a result in the media muslims are portrayed as terrorists and Black folks are portrayed as thugs while a white person doing the exact same thing is given the benefit of the doubt before being labeled.

I have to see this latest murder as so similar to the attack on Gabby Gifford. Those who preach hate against people they oppose – be it in politics or religion – are so very quiet when someone – who probably isn’t 100% sane – takes them at their word & thinks they are ridding the world of something terrible.

The culture of attacking those who are different is disgusting & way too many pundits in the media are happy to incite the hate & then so amazed when someone thinks this is reason to kill.

This needs to be stopped but it is hard to see the Dems taking my advice to fill up their rightful seats and then openly disrespect this foreign warmonger by standing, turning their backs and publicly and very very slowly and silently exiting the room.

This speech to Congress was supposed to create a rift between Dems in the House/Senate and PBO (i.e., it was a speech more for Congress than for the American people). That plan appears to have exploded in Boner and BiBi’s faces as Dems appear to have rallied around the President and will not join GOP in sabotaging the negotiations (i.e., the votes don’t appear to be there). All the “optics” in the world won’t change that reality. BiBi’s base of support has always been Congress/media, not the American people, who don’t want to pick up the tab for another needless war and resent the billions in foreign aid they get, imho. BiBi and Boner were caught flat footed (just like Romney in 2012) that the American people are not so racist that they will sign off on anything just to disrespect PBO.

    POTUS in Buzzfeed interview:

Obama has lost none of the swagger of 2008. Asked about his diverse coalition, he was quick to lay down a marker for the woman he defeated seven years ago: “I think it’s also important to remember that I won Iowa, which doesn’t have one of the most diverse populations in the country,” he said.

The central question may be, however, whether Clinton or another Democrat can reassemble the new coalition that brought Obama to victory, a narrow but growing majority composed of overlapping sets of younger people, women, and black and Latino voters. Asked if the next nominee would inherit that coalition from him, Obama answered quickly in the negative.

“I don’t think any president inherits a coalition,” he said, shaking his head. “I think any candidate has to win over people based on what they stand for, what their message is, what their vision is for the future.”

From goldenstar over at POU about JRW:

    Good Morning, POU family.

I don’t know even where to begin. I worked for a time in a district office which served what is the heart of the JRW league territory. This was when I learned the seriousness and commitment of folks to the game of baseball, competition, and sportsmanship. Yes. Profound understanding of what this game can bring to communities and families.

Evergreen Park has a long-running racial history of keeping blacks at bay. Since the suburb has proximity to some black communities, the white psychological selves had to be assured that they were safe from the Negroes. So, let this fact be part of the story of just why some white adult from Evergreen Park would even give a care that some black folks may not have lived within the JRW boundaries.

The news out of NC is troubling indeed, but not isolated to that area.

This society seems to have devolved into a “clockwork orange” mentality, where those unlike the perpetrators are targeted for their version of “fun.”

I don’t think this made the national news, but last year, a Chinese-national grad student was bludgeoned to death walking home from a study group to his apartment near USC. The perpetrators (Latino, IIRC) showed no remorse, and the youngest was a 14-year-old girl (all from memory, may not be accurate).

They basically thought it would be fun to attack a “foreigner” with baseball bats because nothing else amused them.

Don’t have an answer on how to make things better, but it was heartbreaking to see the delay in allowing his parents to claim their son’s body because of some sort of Visa snafu.

Yesterday and today couldn’t provide better examples of just how off course the media in this country has gone. After the hysteria over ebola last fall, c-span is not planning on covering the President’s remarks today, in which he will note the troops are coming home by the end of April. Three beautiful young Muslim students were killed here in the good ole USA, and we all mourn Kayla’s death. So what does the news cover? John Stewart and Brian Williams. Really. I left MSNBC on last night to see just how long this would go on. The Last Word devoted the entire HOUR to these two “stories”. Unbelievable. And they talk about the President being in a “bubble”. There is no greater bubble than the “news” bubble these idiots live in. Their egos are completely out of control.

When news divisions became part of the entertainment divisions of the networks, that was the beginning of everything going to hell. News should never have to turn a profit – it should be independent at all times.

I’ve heard that now journalism degrees include all kinds of classes on how to market yourself. Used to be you worked a beat, you covered the local 4th of July parade, paid your dues and worked your way up. If you were sloppy, incorrect, or didn’t corroborate your statements, your career was over.

What passes for news now is nothing more than reality TV.

That is what the NRA has fostered: a culture where every slight is now worthy of deadly force. There no longer is anger management, teaching and valuing non-violent resolution of conflicts. Everything is life-threatening, and everyone has a gun in order to enforce whatever petty beef they have.

Mitch McConnell Begs President Obama To Reconsider His Planned Keystone XL Veto

McConnell promised to repeal Obamacare, combat the president’s policies, and to break Obama. So far, he is 0 for 3. Obamacare repeal is DOA. McConnell’s efforts to engage in combat with the President have resulted in defeat after defeat, and the man who promised to make the president do the GOP’s bidding is now “hoping” that that Obama will reconsider his planned veto of Keystone XL.

Obama will veto the bill because Republicans are trying to hijack the process. The President and many others have pointed out that this bill is neither a jobs nor an infrastructure bill.

This man’s crime: WALKING WHILE NON-WHITE

Grandfather visiting Alabama from India stopped by police while taking walk, left partly paralyzed

    By Challen Stephens | cstephens@al.com
    on February 10, 2015 at 2:35 PM, updated February 11, 2015 at 9:29 AM

Madison police last week roughed up a 57-year-old Indian citizen who was walking on the sidewalk outside his son’s home, leaving the older man temporarily paralyzed and hospitalized with fused vertebrae.

“He was just walking on the sidewalk as he does all the time,” said his son, Chirag Patel, this morning. “They put him to the ground.”

No crime had been committed. Madison Police on Monday issued a statement saying the department had suspended the officer and were investigating the use of force in this case. The police statement wished the man a “speedy recovery.”

Chirag Patel, an engineer for one of the many government contractors in Huntsville, said he had just bought a one-way ticket for his father, bringing him from the small Indian town of Pij to his new home in fast-growing suburbs of Madison.

He said his father, Sureshbhai Patel, was to help his wife care for their new baby, a 17-month-old son, so he could pursue his masters degree in electrical engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

“This is a good neighborhood. I didn’t expect anything to happen,” said Chirag Patel, who recently bought the new house on Hardiman Place Lane.

    Europe’s mini-space shuttle returns.

A prototype for a versatile mini-spaceplane has successfully completed its first test flight, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.

The IXV spaceplane resembles a smaller, robotically controlled version of the US space shuttle and could provide Europe with a new, re-useable space transportation system.

It blasted off on a Vega rocket from South America just after 13:40 GMT.

The test could inform future technology for landing payloads on Mars.

The test vehicle flew east around the globe, before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean at about 15:20 GMT.

The wedge-shaped IXV (Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle) is designed to gather information on how space objects fall back to Earth.

Drivers in England will be banned from smoking in their cars if they are carrying children as passengers.

The move, which will become law on 1 October, follows a similar ban in Wales and aims to protect young people under 18 from second-hand smoke. Scotland is also considering introducing a ban.

Anyone found flouting the law in England could be fined £50.

It will not apply to anyone driving alone or driving in a convertible car with the top down.

The regulations were passed in the Commons after 342 MPs voted in favour of legislation while just 74 voted against.

According to the British Lung Foundation, more than 430,000 children are exposed to second-hand smoke in cars each week.

Passive smoke in children can increase the risk of asthma, meningitis and cot death, say public health experts.

While many support a ban, some say it is an unnecessary intrusion.

    Post Date: 02/11/2015 12:18 PM

Our community has been rocked by a horrible crime with the shootings of three young people. On behalf of the Chapel Hill community, I ask that you join with me in remembering the parents, family and friends of Deah Shaddy Barakat, Yusor Mohammad, and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, in your thoughts and prayers. I offer them my heartfelt condolences.

The assailant is in custody after turning himself into police. I have full confidence this crime is being thoroughly investigated. The Chapel Hill Police Department is using all available resources to determine whether hate was a motivating factor. All we know for certain at this time is that it was a senseless and tragic act surrounding a longstanding dispute.

I share strong feelings of outrage and shock with my fellow citizens and University students — as well as concerned people everywhere. We do not know whether anti-Muslim bias played a role in this crime, but I do recognize the fear that members of our community may feel. Chapel Hill is a place for everyone, a place where Muslim lives matter.
These deaths represent an incomprehensible loss. I believe that we can find strength by acknowledging the fear and outrage that this act instills, coming together to ask difficult questions, and lifting up all people in our community who are hurting.

Ed Miliband has called David Cameron a “dodgy prime minister surrounded by dodgy donors”, in a row over party grandees with Swiss bank accounts.

The row comes amid allegations HSBC’s Swiss private bank may have helped wealthy clients avoid or evade tax.

The Labour leader singled out Lord Fink in his attack – but the peer has challenged him to withdraw the remark.

Lord Fink, who stepped down as Conservative co-treasurer in 2010 and has given the party £3m, is among those named in documents seen by the BBC’s Panorama programme, as is Labour donor Lord Paul.
