Just watched the President’s speech on the ongoing ebola battle. Hmmmmm, so much for another “katrina” moment. Wonder if dimwit Mark Knoller has kept track of just how many “katrina” moments this president has faced and conquered:-) I’d love to know, but it has to be more than 50 by now!

I would think at some point, these fools on the Hill would see that this President is the real deal and does a great job.

My take on all this “Katrina” nonsense. GWB’s response to Hurricane Katrina was the height of incompetence and ineptitude. Part of the need to pin a “Katrina” on PBO is partisan, but a larger part of it, imho, is the need to paint the first African-American President as “not up to the job”. News outlets, left, right and center have all tried to create PBO’s Katrina, so it is not just FoxNews. The more PBO proves himself an extremely competent President, the more shrill and hateful certain pockets of our populace become. The treasonous behavior of the GOP is a symptom of this problem as is the nonchalant manner large segments of the country react to such treasonous acts. In addition, the love affair many on the left had/have for Putin and Snowden illustrates my point. They would rather see the country fail than PBO succeed. Partisan hatred for Bill Clinton ran high, but it was never close to this self-destructive, cut off your nose to spite your face level of insanity.

Boehner, talking about DHS bill, ‘Senate Democrats should get off their ass.”

Reid chastised him for his foul language. God! Tell them Democrats have principles, too! A clean bill to fund their treasured effing wars against anyone not like them.

There are a lot of smart people here so I’m looking for some help. With the news of Kayla’s death, there of course again is a call for the US “to do something”. I don’t think anyone would dispute at this point that Assad is horrible and needs to go. But for the life of me, I cannot find a group, party, etc that appears even remotely prepared to run the country. Given the number of terrorist organizations running around Syria, it seems to me that if Assad goes at this point, you may well end up something worse. Am I missing something? In months past, I’ve read about the Free Syrian Army, but they rarely even get a mention anywhere recently. This would also seem to be the problem with figuring out who to train, supply arms to, etc. But I could well be missing something so if anyone has some knowledge, I’d love to know.

Firefox, have no idea what the future of Syria is, but do know that the “calls to do” something are always reckless and ill conceived. Just sending US troops to be slaughtered might be good for the defense industry, but it would be horrible for the US and our military. Plus it would make the war in Syria one of the US against Arabs, instead of an internal civil war, which is not something we ever want to do again.

Hi foxfiretx I was listening to Thom Hartmann and he said that maybe the administration is no longer asking Asaad to step down with all the nonsense going on with daesh, Yemen, Egypt, Iraq, and Afghanistan that more disruptions in this area things could only get worse if there is a vacuum for more terrorist to step in.

I don’t see how these talks were ever going to succeed. You can’t negotiate with a snake who’s determined to kill you. Putin has no intention of ever backing down and he would just as soon stick a knife in Poroshenko’s back and then go on to crush Ukraine. There is no hope for Ukraine except to fight with all they have for as long as they can manage. I hope there are ways that needed weapons can be very quickly delivered to Ukrainians from across Europe and the US.

I’m a Dove when it comes to talk of military action so all this talk about war powers and authorization for use of the military is alarming to me. With that said, I trust our Presidents judgement to do the right thing as he carries the weight of the world on his shoulders.

He needs latitude if action is necessary. I fervently believe that PBO only takes military action when it is absolutely necessary.

    • February 11, 2015 at 3:52 pm

      Understood, Donna.

What the President has ‘crafted’ is a major rock + hard place for #NEOCONSTERS – both R & D. He has all the authority he needs to pursue #DAESH. He is now holding Congress accountable and putting the onus on them to end the tragic 2002 AUMF that enabled GWB to pursue his catastrophic, criminal regime in Iraq.

      • 35 jackiegrumbacher
        February 11, 2015 at 4:09 pm

Yes, his statement was a thing of beauty, Bob. It was framed so that no one could deny him the authority, especially in the light of the recent horrific murders and it was specific and clear as to its scope and constraints. If Congress doesn’t give him this authority, they are saying they have no interest in fighting the ISIL terrorists and he can put every one of them on the spot. On the other hand, it’s narrow time frame of three years puts the decision back on Congress to grant further military authority for the next president. Congress can’t claim that the President has overstepped his bounds when they have formally agreed to the extent of those bounds.

      • 36 Vicki
        February 11, 2015 at 4:09 pm

Yes, Bob. The way I see it is that PBO is forcing Congress to own whatever happens with daesh.

The harder Senators object to the AUMFwill be a key to how little responsibility they are willing to share. Dems no different from GOP. Thye want to make the war manufaturers happy but somehow pretend that if there are casualties or domestic objections, “hey don’t look at me this is PBO’s idea.”

He is calling their bluff and forcing them to either vote for this or come up with another plan.

Propagandists keep stressing that PBO doesn’t need this. a big clue to the general reluctance to be responsible.

His statement just now is tremendously reassuring with regard to the scope and the extent of the authorization he seeks. Basically, he wants to be able to respond immediately to rescue, special operations and to support our allies.

      (c) LIMITATIONS
The authority granted in subsection (a) does not authorize the use of the United States Armed Forces in enduring offensive ground combat operations.

Anyone really buying the shooter that killed that Muslim family as being just some mere parking dispute? I’m not.

Nor am I buying the claim from the killers wife that he was a ‘good soul.’ People really are dumb if they believe this pile of crap.

    • February 11, 2015 at 4:51 pm

Did you read the comments of the father of two of the victims, Jeff?

….. “It was execution style, a bullet in every head,” Abu-Salha said Wednesday morning. “This was not a dispute over a parking space; this was a hate crime. This man had picked on my daughter and her husband a couple of times before, and he talked with them with his gun in his belt. And they were uncomfortable with him, but they did not know he would go this far.”

Abu-Salha said his daughter who lived next door to Hicks wore a Muslim head scarf and told her family a week ago that she had “a hateful neighbor.”

“Honest to God, she said, ‘He hates us for what we are and how we look,’” he said……

    • February 11, 2015 at 5:30 pm

According to the article Chips linked, the killings occured inside the couple’s apartment, so… no. When I think “Parking dispute” it typically conjurs up scenarios like both sides having a potentially heated argument OUTSIDE standing over/near/around the the parking spot being fought over.

This guy had a history of intimidating this family. Complaining about noise, showing up at their door with his rifle. He was looking for an excuse to kill them.

What kind of a society are we when we shrug at this daily violence, when we stop teaching our children to resolve conflicts peacefully. When we think we are “free” to intimidate and bully and threaten as if that was enshrined in the Constitution as a “right”?

If anyone asked me to sum up the Constitution in one phrase I would say “the Commons.” I have had to tangentially study this stuff for the research I do in my job, and that is the unifying idea of everything that is American: “We the People” as a driving force of the Commons.

We are devolving to savagery. In some ways, we are worse than the Middle East or Africa – we should know better. We have avoided this abyss so many times. Until Ronald Reagan, who I believe started this slide off the cliff.

Okay – I’m off my soapbox now.
