Question…..what date was this vote? Tom Coburn is no longer a Senator, so this has to be an old set of pix. I was looking to see if the new Senator,James Lankford was in this group, and saw Coburn. This needs to be brought up to date.
From the bottom of the previous thread – this is important ….
“While the Grammy awards aren’t historically known for being the most socially informative live show there is, this year’s telecast will do a good job of making them so — in a big way. During the show tonight, Katy Perry’s live performance will leave the sharks at home and, instead, include a much more serious (and worth paying attention to) rendition of her song ”By the Grace of God,” as well as an appearance and written word performance from domestic violence and sex trafficking survivor Brooke Axtell. Like I said: this is a performance worth paying attention to, guys.
So, who is Brooke Axtell? In short, she’s a majorly important presence in combating and raising awareness about not only domestic violence, but sex trafficking and sexual abuse as well, and she’s the director of Communications for Allies Against Slavery. According to a statement she gave to People when her performance with Perry was first announced earlier this month, Axtell explained her motivation for joining Perry in the performance:
It’s an honor to collaborate with Katy in this way. She has been very devoted to various aspects of female empowerment…it’s going to bring a lot of encouragement and freedom to those who hear my story and know that they are not alone in this.”
Glad to provide the info, JackieG. Hope everyone reads the interview. Ms Axtell is the real deal and she’s got a fine sense of humor ….
“What will be going through your mind before you walk onstage tonight?
I’ll be thinking of the survivors I’ve worked with over the years. I know if I speak from that place, I’ll be very peaceful and very clear. I’ll try not to focus on the fact that Beyonce and Madonna and Lady Gaga are sitting right there. And I won’t be wearing a shark costume.” 🙂
Scientists on Europe’s Planck satellite say the first stars lit up the Universe later than was previously thought.
The team has made the most precise map of the “oldest light” in the cosmos.
Earlier observations of this radiation had suggested the first generation of stars were bursting into life by about 420 million years after the Big Bang.
Planck’s new data now indicates this great ignition was well established by some 560 million years after it all got going.
“This difference of 140 million years might not seem that significant in the context of the 13.8-billion-year history of the cosmos, but proportionately it’s actually a very big change in our understanding of how certain key events progressed at the earliest epochs,” said Prof George Efstathiou, one of the leaders of the Planck Science Collaboration.
Britain’s biggest bank helped wealthy clients cheat the UK out of millions of pounds in tax, the BBC has learned.
Panorama has seen thousands of accounts from HSBC’s private bank in Switzerland leaked by a whistleblower in 2007.
They show bankers helped clients evade tax and offered deals to help tax dodgers stay ahead of the law.
HSBC admitted that some individuals took advantage of bank secrecy to hold undeclared accounts. But it said it has now “fundamentally changed”.
The documents, stolen in 2007 by a computer expert working for HSBC in Geneva, contain details of more than 100,000 clients from around the world.
Offshore accounts are not illegal, but many people use them to hide cash from the tax authorities. And while tax avoidance is perfectly legal, deliberately hiding money to evade tax is not.
Prof Hawking had earlier appeared on stage to present the award for special visual effects, alongside leading actress nominee Felicity Jones, which went to Christopher Nolan ‘s sci-fi epic Interstellar.
Jones joked she was with the “only person on the planet more intelligent than Stephen Fry”.
Prof Hawking responded: “Yes, and better looking.”
Guess you are not going to bed early tonight! Well, I’m off since tomorrow is my only work day this week, and I might have to shovel my way out IF the car can’t get over or through the snow in the morning. I didn’t feel like going out to do it this afternoon.
