Uninsured Rate Falls Again. Thanks, ObamaCare

Dylan Scott: This Chart: Uninsured Rate Drops Under Obamacare

The percentage of uninsured Americans has fallen from 13.9 percent to 10.2 percent since Obamacare coverage took effect, according to new data from the Urban Institute. The difference is even more pronounced in states that expanded Medicaid under the law. In those states, the uninsured rate dropped from 12.6 percent to 8.4 percent from the second quarter of 2013 to the third quarter of 2014.

Michael Karpman: QuickTake: Uninsurance Rate Down 25 Percent For Working Adults And 31 Percent For Low-Income Workers Since September 2013

Recent HRMS data show an estimated 10.6 million adults ages 18 to 64 gained coverage between September 2013, just before the first open enrollment period for the ACA’s health insurance Marketplaces, and September 2014, just before the second open enrollment period (Long et al. 2014). Between September 2013 and September 2014, the uninsurance rate fell 3.4 percentage points (95% CI [2.0, 4.9]; figure 1) for working nonelderly adults. The share of working nonelderly adults without insurance declined from an estimated 13.6 percent just before the first open enrollment period to 10.2 percent in September 2014, a 25.3 percent decline.

Low overcast and cool here in SoCal, perfect weather for seeing this — which brought so much unexpected joy to so many people.

Love the idea, love the reaction, love the diversity.

Didn’t see this reported last month, and usually check @latimes website at least once a day.

Bob, I don’t understand how there can be a “resumption of a ceasefire” that never happened. Putin never honored the original agreement and used it as an opportunity to make deeper and more violent incursions into Ukraine. He won’t honor any agreement, so how is that going to work?

        • February 7, 2015 at 4:50 pm

As I tweeted Thursday, JackieG ….

Appeasement has never worked. Ukraine is going to have to kick his ass and they actually have the surface to surface missile capability to destroy all the Russian depots and heavy armaments inside Ukraine. That would be a good first step.

“A few days ago, Germany and the whole world lost one of the most prominent figures in modern history.

Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker had played a decisive role not only in the process of German reunification, but in the fate of Ukraine as well.

It was President von Weizsäcker who, in his letter addressed to my predecessor Leonid Kravchuk on December 26, 1991, recognized our independence.

Once he said that “the German question will remain open as long as the Brandenburg Gate is closed.”

In the spirit of these words of a great German mind, I would simply like to reiterate that the Ukrainian question will remain unsolved as long as the hearts of people and politicians in the West are closed to providing solid, practical support to strengthen Ukraine’s independence politically and economically, but also militarily.

Ukraine greatly needs defensive military support to ensure the ceasefire and contain the aggression.

I know many experts have argued that enhancing us militarily would provoke further aggression. On the contrary, we have seen that the lack of defense capabilities triggers offensive operation against Ukraine and spins the escalation.

Over the course of the conflict we have proven to be responsible and that we will not use the defensive equipment to attack.

The stronger is our defense – the more convincing is our diplomatic voice.

We stand ready for comprehensive and immediate cease-fire. So should be Russia, without any precondition. Unfortunately, we do not see its readiness so far.

In the same time, complete and responsible road to peace in Ukraine should be part of a broader context of how to restore confidence in the international order.

The trust is broken. But it is not the system that should not be trusted, but those who betrayed that trust.

They need to be stopped, contained, and placed back in the framework, which is balanced and regulated on a multilateral basis.”

I think I have steered a friend who doesn’t have insurance to getting some before the 15th. She is paying for everything out of pocket and said Obamacare isn’t working and is a mess. I tried to be very calm and steer to someone who could help. We are in Montana the legislature is full of tea partiers and don’t think the poor needs insurance. All she hears is thru Fox and all the folks saying their insurance has gone up. I am so mad at these a$$holes hurting the poor.

    Awesome ACA Post, NW. Danke.
    Hello TOD.
Congrats to Gold ⭐ winners, starting with this Fine Post and 4 back.
Funny during the GW Bush Regime…..GW Bush…. himself used CRUSADE and many then wanted the Wars to be coined as a “Crusade”.
Today, Factually and Historically made statements this past Thursday by Pres Obama is causing ODS sufferers to collectively lose their minds? I saw LOD today on MSNBC and his argument was Loony. Wow……..I am really LOVING how all President Obama has to do is say one thing and Once the Right complains, then there comes the Media, Fox, Emoprogs, etc fighting for relevancy.

LOD has lost his objectivity, evidently. I said the other night, that LOD is a loyal, loyal Catholic, and he is butthurt to be reminded what his church has done historically. We all have to face bad things about our religious group. I am a Protestant, and we surely are not blameless. Think of the South and slavery!!!

Totally with you on that sentiment, Nena. I have no idea whether or not Lawrence is a loyal Catholic, nor do I care, but he didn’t speak for me while bloviating about the President’s speech. He’s a self-aggrandizer whom I used to think could overcome that, while supporting reasonable perspectives. I no longer think that, either.

You know the funny thing is President Bush said similar things about Islam and terrorists. He said that we are not at was against Islam and that these terrorist networks are perverting religion and they are not true representatives of Islam. I’m sure the crazies didn’t like it but I don’t recall hearing an uproar when he said the exact same thing. Also I like how these people are trying to rewrite history and making excuses about other horrible actions in the name of religion like the Crusades, slavery, and Jim Crow. And those are only a few.

    • 46 Nena20409
      February 7, 2015 at 2:34 pm

In the 20th Century, FL, AZ, etc where African Americans built up Commerce, their hard work were burnt down by those who called themselves Christians. In MN…..In St Cloud, Lynching occurred. In a State…..up until 1980s, in a State with less than 4% of African American Population. During the expansion of Highways, many Black communities…..especially, Middle Class communities were wiped out by the Fed and Local Governments….with Zero Compensation for most. In MN, it was devastatingly harsh in St. Paul area.
Today, MN has the largest Population of East Africans from Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and from Asia, people from Laos, mostly, Hmong.
These people are in denial are suffering from the severest case of ODS.
What was the burning Symbolism of a CROSS?
Bombing Black Churches in the 20th Century…..up until the 21st Century, especially, in the South during the GW Bush regime, 25 plus Churches were set on Fire.
These things happen not 1000 yrs ago by the Roman Catholics. These things happened in less than 100yrs…….In These USA by those calling themselves CHRISTIANS.

Bob, thanks as always for your international information. This is so important.
I imagine others are noticing the high profile mission VP Biden is on right now. I’m just doing some musing, and it seems to me, PBO is sending Joe on important missions to polish his foreign policy bonafides. He has always been knowledgeable in that field, in fact I think that is one reason PBO chose him. But now, with 2016 looming, I feel that PBO is helping Joe in this field….taking the long view, again…..not doing anything overt, but reminding diplomats, etc. that Biden is next in line to the presidency right now, and that if he runs, there will be continuity in our foreign policy. Others agree…..disagree…..?

Also, as to a VP nominee if Biden runs, I’m thinking that it will be someone like the Castro twin who is now HUD secretary. He has been mayor of a major city, now administrating a large cabinet department, is a minority, from the second most populous state in the country, can totally change the electoral landscape…….I think Elizabeth Warren would be better placed as either Majority leader, or chair of the banking committee. As VP she would have no clout where we need her. Also, taking another Mass. Senator would weaken the Senate, and the gov of MA is now a Republican…..bad for naming replacement. PBO is covering all the political angles.

    Just my two cents.

Very insightful, carolyn, I agree with everything you’ve said. I think that Warren sometimes makes President Obama out to be the enemy of the progressive wing of the party.

      February 7, 2015 at 3:53 pm

      Agree with Don, Carolyn.

Very insightful, and I hope to see more of the same.

The greatest aspect of this is that our lazy, gossip-fueled, Koch-backed MSM echo-chamber will have missed all this unfolding, despite being *paid* to scope out the 2016 landscape.

I think most Obots agree that we need to continue the last two years of #POTUSunplugged for the next decade (and beyond), and there is no other Dem considering a WH run that can be guaranteed to not back-stab or blame (even subtly) the President when he/she encounters tough political/world/domestic obstacles/events.

Obots *need* @VP Biden to continue President Obama’s legacy and follow-through on PBO’s commitments to the 99% of Americans.

@VP Biden is a true-blue progressive, not a triangular who gives away the store to TeleCom and WallStreet as others beholden to those interests would surely do.

    • 54 jackiegrumbacher
      February 7, 2015 at 3:54 pm

Carolyn, I hope that VP Biden gets more and more front and center exposure in the next two years. He’s brilliant in international relations and he’s terrific at domestic issues. He will have one heck of a battle with the Clintons in the primary, but his skill in batting away BS should serve him in good stead. As for Warren, I’ve always believed she’s better in the Senate. She represents a wing of the party that’s often silent and helps shore up the Progressive leaners, but I really don’t think she’s right for the presidency. Joe Biden is probably the only candidate who can bring the entire Obama coalition along with him and that will make him very formidable.

Anything relating to themselves automatically has them in a frenzy.

Holier and healthier than thou: Republican virtue and Republican health care

Nothing makes Republicans feel more virtuous than bullying the poor into practicing virtues they never had to practice themselves.

This is how we get treated to the spectacle of George W. Bush, who never put in a full forty hour week before he became President, never held a job, including the Presidency, his family’s money and influence didn’t secure for him, gushing over the virtuousness of a woman working three jobs in order to pay for minimal health insurance for herself and her family.

It’s how Paul Ryan can set himself up as a moral exemplar for the working poor and lecture them on their lack of self-reliance and a proper work ethic, which if they had either, as he pompously and fatuously admonishes, would put them on the path to comfort and prosperity, without his feeling he needs to explain how he would know, considering he’s rich thanks to having inherited money, married money, and had money thrown at him by richer people who can’t pay him enough to hear him bully the poor and devise unworkable “budgets” whose main objective is to make the rich richer by making the poor poorer.

I’d like to hear Ryan explaining to a working mother of small children she could make all her troubles go away just by writing a vapid book strung together from a list of conservative-beloved clichés that her rich friends could turn into a bestseller by buying thousands of copies to give away at political fundraisers.

By substituting moralizing for morality, Republicans cover a multitude of their own sins. They get to be selfish and greedy. They get to be complacent, self-satisfied, and boastful and vain. They get to be uncharitable, unforgiving, unyielding, and unkind. They get to bully and scold and torment and punish the poor and unfortunate. They get to look on with smug self-approval as people fail to live up to the high standards they set for them but not for themselves. They get to watch with lofty disdain as people lose their jobs, lose their homes, go broke, go hungry, get sick, and die. And all the while they get to congratulate themselves on what a good deed they are doing with their petty cruelty and meanness and how their hardness of heart will get them into heaven.

    Fucking psychos.
