So while I was waiting for this new Post (which I have no idea what its about), I was reading my email from ManU and read about something I didn’t know before…

    The darkest day

February 6th will forever be circled on the calendars of everyone connected with Manchester United.

On that day in 1958, the darkest day in United’s history, 23 people – including eight players and three members of the club’s staff – suffered fatal injuries in the Munich air crash.

Flying back from a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade, the team plane stopped in Germany to refuel. The first two attempts to take off from Munich airport were aborted; following a third attempt, the plane crashed.

Twenty-one of the people on board died instantly. Aeroplane captain Kenneth Rayment died a few weeks later from the injuries he sustained while Duncan Edwards – one of the eight victims from the team – passed away 15 days after the crash. The tragedy is an indelible part of United’s history, as is Sir Matt Busby overcoming his injuries to build another great team which won the European Cup 10 years later.

Roger Byrne (28), Eddie Colman (21), Mark Jones (24), David Pegg (22), Tommy Taylor (26), Geoff Bent (25), Liam Whelan (22) and Duncan Edwards (21) all died, along with club secretary Walter Crickmer, trainer Tom Curry and coach Bert Whalley.

Eight journalists died – Alf Clarke, Tom Jackson, Don Davies, George Fellows, Archie Ledbrook, Eric Thompson, Henry Rose, and Frank Swift who was a former Manchester City player. Plane captain Ken Rayment perished, as did Sir Matt’s friend Willie Satinoff. Travel agent Bela Miklos and crew member Tom Cable also died.

    We will never forget.

I have a vague memory of the event from childhood. English Football was big in Australia in 1958 – long time Man U supporter.

If I read that right ~ “not flogged” ~ thank God! Almost can’t believe it.

I heard that Badawi’s wife went public and said his health had declined since the first flogging. It’s likely a second flogging would have severely damaged him. The Saudis don’t want his death–it would be terrible PR for the new king.

    George Crum (1822-1914)
Chef George Crum spent the summer of 1853 working at the Moon Lake Lodge resort in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., where thickly cut, French fried potatoes were a popular menu item. When a customer complained that their fries were too thick to eat and sent them back to the kitchen, Crum became agitated and reacted by slicing the potatoes as thin as he possibly could, frying them and sending the crunchy brown chips back out to the guest. The guest loved the crisps and other guests began asking for them as well. They soon gained popularity and were called Crum’s Saratoga Chips. In 1860, when Crum opened his own restaurant, Crumbs House, each table came with a basket of potato chips. Crum never patented or attempted to distribute his potato chips, but has been credited as the creator of the widely popular snack.

    CAIRO
Egypt’s most popular satirist Bassem Youssef joined Harvard’s Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government as a resident fellow for the spring semester, almost a year after his program was taken off the air for lambasting Egyptian presidents and military men.

Youssef said in a tweet Thursday that he was “proud” to join the school for the semester. The surgeon-turned-satirist has been largely outside Egypt and out of public view since his landmark program was pulled off the air in April 2014 ahead of Egypt’s presidential elections — which former military chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi won by a landslide.

The end of Youssef’s show reflected the growing intolerance for criticism of authorities and the shrinking space for freedom of expression since 2013. It was part on an evolving crackdown on dissent that has landed thousands of government critics behind bars and silenced many dissenting voices. Authorities contend they are fighting a violent wave of Islamic militancy that aims to destabilize the country.

Congressman Schock’s residence listed as foreclosure

Congressman Aaron Schock’s legally-documented residence in the 18th District is listed for sale as a foreclosure.

The congressman’s home address is listed as 222 W. Detweiller Drive on his Federal Election Commission filing dated Tuesday. But a foreclosure listing has been up for more than a week, and the 35 photos posted of the property show what appears to be a vacant home.

The person listed as the last owner is William Boyd.

The five bedroom, six bath home is listed for $2.3 million. The 7,236 square feet of living space is listed as a single family residence, but it’s believed the Congressman has been renting a carriage house portion of the property not registered as a stand alone address.

    FIshy…

I hope that article is wrong about his Library being put in New York City. I will never go there and never get to see it if true.

      • February 6, 2015 at 4:01 pm

This is the first time I’m hearing anything about FLOTUS wanting the library to be in NYC, and given that she is from Chicago, I’m not sure how accurate this report is. Having said that, it’s possible that they’re considering putting a satellite branch in NYC – that would make sense, with the main one being in Chicago, and another satellite in Hawaii. PBO has enough material for more than 3 libraries!!! 🙂

You guys do know that the family compound will be here in California – for closer jaunts to Hawaii, therefore, we should have a library here! 😀

POTUS on voting/political participation: “If only a third of the people are responding, then you get the government we have in Washington.”

How very true! PBO gets it, and I love the way he can break it down like no other. unfortunately for us, no one shows up to vote except the nuttiest nutballs the GOP can dredge up.
