GM all. I know a lot of people think the President (any President) should not attend the National Prayer Breakfast and I understand the reasoning. But, I have to say, President Obama has always used this event as an opportunity to attempt to open people’s eyes. Today he is doing so in a really big way.

    • February 5, 2015 at 10:49 am

I was happy to hear POTUS speak this morning at the National Prayer Breakfast.

    • February 5, 2015 at 10:51 am

I tend to agree more with your thinking though I also understand other’s opinion. He did what he always does–take any opportunity to get his message across to people who need to hear it. And, as his first point this morning, he always does it with humility and grace.

      Wow.

      Good catch, NW.

When I saw Schock’s “Downton Abbey” congressional digs, the first thought that crossed my mind was “dog-whistle” to those who hide under the banner of Euro supporters, today’s equivalent of white sheets and hoods (KKK). But I know nothing about Schock and his district.

However, this person is ” senior adviser for policy and communications to Rep. Aaron Schock (R-IL) posted racial comments and endorsed gentrification of his neighborhood.”

Hope the twitterverse has a long memory for this, and makes Schock squirm when he’s up for re-election in 2016.

      😆 Goooooood morning LP!

      • February 5, 2015 at 11:49 am

My mom broke her wrist 2 weeks ago and had an outpatient surgery (was in the hospital for 5 hours) …….I just got the bill $44,657.00!!!! ….the orthopedic surgeons bill $2100…I’m going ballistic right now

        • February 5, 2015 at 12:01 pm

Oh my God LP, have you any cover for that??

          • February 5, 2015 at 12:08 pm

She is on medicare, but still has to pay 20% until she hits her out-of-pocket for the year. I don’t understand how putting a plate in someones wrist (was 90 min procedure) is more expensive than a hip replacement…. I’m waiting on the EOB before I burn that hospital down!!!!

              February 5, 2015 at 12:17 pm

Don’t worry. The bill will come down to about 8-10,000 for the hospital, if that. The doc will be about 800. I forget what the out of pocket is for Medicare, but it is one of the reasons my wife has a gap plan. Costs her $1,200 per year which is way below the OOP for Medicare.

              • February 5, 2015 at 12:26 pm

I know they have negotiated prices w/ the insurance companies, but 44G’s as a starting point seems beyond ridiculous. Another reason I’m so pissed is b/c I had to take her to the ER Sunday during the Super Bowl due to extreme pain (cost $65 co-pay) they would not admit her after giving her morphine for 6 hours & come Monday morning had to go again to the ER and they found 2 blood clots after doing another surgery……I haven’t got that bill yet!!!

                • 58 japa21
                  February 5, 2015 at 12:36 pm

One thing you will see, over a period of time, is the actual bill sizes will go down. There are two reasons for the inflated bills. The first is to make up for treating the uninsured and people that can’t pay. The second is a little more devious. Private hospitals (I don’t know which this is) tend to charge an extremely high amount and also tend to push with insurance companies (not Medicare) to pay on a percent of charge basis.

                  • February 5, 2015 at 12:51 pm

I know the hospitals have to cover for uninsured costs….that is usually built in, but this is a public hospital… part of the Indiana University network. I’m just kind of pissed that after two surgeries I’ll probably be out 6-7K & the only solace will be that she has hit her OOP for the year in Feb 😦

I am well familiar with the IU system. Believe it or not, those hospitals associated with university systems tend to charge even more than others. IU charges more than any other system in the Indianapolis area.

                    • February 5, 2015 at 1:44 pm

This new hospital (IU west) is where we went to b/c it is literally 3 miles from our house. She fell in the parking lot on an ice patch after going to temple back on Jan. 19th. They did the first surgery on the 22nd. All my dad’s cardiologist/physicians are in the IU system, but his surgeries were done at the Indiana Heart hospital (I think it is part of the St. Vincent network) I had all my foot surgeries at the Iowa University hospital…they took real good care of me & didn’t even charge me for my 3rd foot surgery after I applied for financial assistance (I was selling insurance at the time and my income was commission based..b/c I had been rehabbing prior to tearing my tendon again I had no taxable income, but did have health insurance)….. I definitely will avoid the IU network if god forbid something happens in the future.

~There is a lot at stake here. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that among children born during 1994-2013, vaccinations prevented 322m illnesses, 21m hospitalisations and 730,000 deaths. The lesson for politicians and the media is clear: everyone should tread carefully when they enter the fray on public health. Exploiting such wedge issues may be politically expedient, but playing politics with health information has an ethical dimension. Everyone would do well to remember the common medical phrase: Primum non nocere. First do no harm.~

On the February 5 edition of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, political analyst Harold Ford, Jr. raised the issue of net neutrality, claiming that the proposed FCC plan to regulate internet service as a utility would “stifle investment.”

FORD: Whatever your thoughts about what Obama said in his State of the Union message — some of it I liked, a lot of it I didn’t like — but one take away that both parties should take from it is that he talked about empowering the middle class. Now if you’re about raising wages and creating jobs you ought to do those things.

I think what’s happening in Washington today — you saw that F.C.C. Chair come out and say we’ve got to regulate the internet like a utility. That’s not going to create higher paying jobs, it will actually stifle investment. You talk about wanting to reduce taxes on small businesspeople, Republicans want to reduce the corporate tax, Democrats want an infrastructure plan — government, I’m old-fashioned, I think you are, too. We believe government can work. You’ve got to come together and compromise if you want it to happen.

Neither Ford nor MSNBC disclosed that the analyst is an “honorary co-chair” of Broadband for America, an industry-funded group whose members have included major national broadband providers like Comcast (a parent company of MSNBC), Cox Communications, and Verizon. Among its members, Broadband for America received a $2 million donation from the National Cable & Telecommunications Association, which has spent millions of dollars to lobby against net neutrality regulations.

This is not the first time a Comcast subsidiary has failed to disclose telecom industry ties during coverage of FCC broadband regulations. In 2014, CNBC’s Kelly Evans interviewed Ford and John Sununu about proposed regulations, introducing the guests as “Broadband for America honorary co-chairs” without disclosing the interest that the telecom industry-funded Broadband for America has in limiting government regulation of broadband access.

    http://mediamatters.org/blog/2015/02/05/morning-joes-net-neutrality-conflict-of-interes/202428

When Ford admit is nothing but a lobbyist ? He plays the same role advocating the Keystone Pipeline.

I saw Sununu on Hardball last night….and Chris Matthews fawned over him…….

During the 2012 campaign Matthews consistently called him out for his race baiting comments about PBO.

      February 5, 2015 at 12:09 pm

Both Ford and Scarborough are paid propagandists who use their access to the “microphone” to further the agenda of those who are paying for their services. You will be disappointed time and again if you expect these folks to disclose their ties because the appearance of objectivity key to the effectiveness of their propagandizing. I am very pleased by the hammering Brian Williams is taking for his lying about being under fire in Iraq. I always viewed him as a smug asshole and he was never supportive (or honest) in his reporting concerning PBO. He was just another GOP shill in my opinion, rooting against PBO and the country. Kudos to CHips for her hilarious tweets.

Critics have latched onto it as an example of why they believe unnecessarily generous benefits will drive up health costs, complaining that having children is a choice and not everyone will need maternity care.

A choice ? I thought they were against a woman having the ability have a choice. They are against birth control and terminating a pregnancy…. What choice are they talking about, abstinence ?

      • February 5, 2015 at 12:46 pm

This is what I don’t get, is when you purchase an insurance policy as a married man, single man, married woman, single woman, etc., how can a insurance company carve out maternity coverage? Companies have ALWAYS included maternity coverage and the cost is spread across the board to young and old employees. Now that it is in the ACA for everyone to share in the cost MEN who don’t want to pay for it want it eliminated. People can be really be selfish sometimes and maybe women should just not have children now that birth control is included in ACA.

the entire effing Democratic party should be making this an issue and calling out Boehner and the GOP for

        1. Being ignorant of how the Constitution works.
        2. Outrageous, insulting, treatment of the Executive branch.
        3. “are you just stupid and ill-informed, or are you trying to cause a constitutional crisis?”
        4. Trying to cause an international crisis for political gain.
        5. Undermining peace to benefit warmongers.
        6. “GOP HATES AMERICA.

They call PBO a tyrant for any number of lies. Why can’t the entire Democratic leadership show outrage over this insult to the Executive branch. Keep screaming about it until the MSM effing notices.

But nooooooo. We’ll whine that we can’t get coverage so we’ll be tepid and careful so Chuck Todd isn’t mean to us.

        Unbelievable.

I remember in 2004 and 2008, the GOP complained about both Kerry and PBO trying to get endorsements from European leaders (which they weren’t) and how people from other countries should stay out of our politics. But they have no problem injecting themselves into Israel’s campaign.

There may be peak oil, but there is no such thing as peak GOP hypocrisy.
