The US is set to destroy its largest remaining cache of chemical-laden artillery shells, bringing it closer to complying with an international treaty.

The Pueblo Chemical Depot in Colorado will begin neutralising mustard agent in 780,000 shells in March.

The 1997 Chemical Weapons Convention set a 2012 deadline to eradicate chemical weapons

Russia, Libya and Iraq are the only other countries with chemical weapons that have missed the deadline.

Stena Line has scrapped its fast ferry HSS Explorer service from Holyhead on Anglesey to Dun Laoghaire in Ireland.

The company said it was consolidating its services to and from Dublin Port from Anglesey.

The HSS service, which crossed the Irish Sea in just over two hours, was run over the summer months.

She doesn’t worry me as much as the seemingly ‘sane’ candidates. IMO, some of the poorest red state voters have an underlying belief in U.S. ‘royalty’ families. Some, I suspect, believe in class structure – leading family and all that junk.

The DNC is considering holding the 2016 Democratic Convention in NYC.
More specifically, in Brooklyn at The Barclay Center.

The Barclay Center’s principal owners are Russian Oligarchs. NYC has the Most segregated public school system in the USA. Too many of our elected officials are under indictment awaiting trial or ousted but still around or just flat-out incarcerated. All of them on fraud charges of one kind or another.
Our middle class has all but disappeared and in Bill de Blasio’s words this week there is a real danger of becoming a gated-city.

In view of the 2016 message being Middle-Class Economics I strongly sugggest that NYC is the wrong place to hold the 2016 Convention, let alone a Coronation.

Indeed, Nena. Many of us think Madame Karma should strike instantly and with no leniency. However, that is a misunderstanding of the Law of Balance in the Universe. “For every Action, there is a Reaction.” That is the basis of karmic return. In some ways, instant karma is the best, because you see your error quickly and can make the adjustment. The long, slow, fruitful Karmic hit, long after the one who earns it has forgotten the error, or ignored their immorality or lack of ethics, that is the most painful. Maybe it is Soul Consciousness, perhaps after we have been chosen to dance with Her enough times, we finally learn Right Behavior, and She becomes a beneficent partner in our Growth, guiding us to be of Service to all Life.

Greece’s new prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, says he wants a “viable” deal on repaying the country’s debt, after meetings with creditors in the EU.

Mr Tsipras said he had offered “realistic” proposals in the talks. EU officials gave a guarded welcome, warning Greece to honour its pledges.

Mr Tsipras and his finance minister are on a diplomatic offensive to reassure eurozone leaders about their plans.

The Greek PM has pledged to renegotiate the terms of a €240bn (£182bn) bailout.

His far-left party Syriza was elected last month on a promise to end austerity measures.

“The debt must become viable, this is what we must discuss,” Mr Tsipras said in Paris on Wednesday, wearing an open-necked shirt alongside the more formally dressed French President, Francois Hollande.

Our new IL governor has decided that it’s Medicaid and unionized public workers that are the problem for IL. He wants to cut Medicaid, pensions, salaries and workers state-wide. He wants “right to work zones”.

He spent more of his money to buy IL than any other individual politician spent in 2014.

Thanks, Chicagoans, for not bothering to vote.

        February 4, 2015 at 2:19 pm

As I just told my husband, even though we will personally be affected if he does what he wants to do about pensions, the people in this state are getting what we all deserve. Rauner was always up front about what he wanted to do, never lied about it and yet people either voted for him or sat home on their asses and didn’t bother to vote. This is what the voters want it’s just too bad the rest of us have to suffer.

          February 4, 2015 at 2:44 pm

I’m still counting on the Dems, who hold veto proof majorities to rein him in. It won’t be like Wisconsin. Quinn may not have been the greatest Governor, but he was dealing with a God-awful situation. Rauner, meanwhile, was smooth as silk, and still didn’t win by much.

The trouble is, he doesn’t need the legislature to break state contracts, that includes pay which is covered by those contracts.

How’s this for a bucket of irony?
I stopped going to this place to get my hair done a few months back because they kept playing all this heavily sexualized adult rap music. It was either that or a bunch of profanity and n-word laced mess. It was bad enough (and to me unprofessional) that they did it w/ any customers there, but especially with kids there. I got tired of asking them to change the music and decided it just wasn’t my scene. Young folks, good work, but different mindset.

Now this! Anyway I think this is a cute idea. Certainly works publicity-wise. 🙂

The head of Brazil’s state-run oil giant Petrobras and five senior executives have resigned in the wake of a huge corruption scandal.

Maria das Gracas Foster’s departure follows the arrest and testimony of some three dozen executives at Petrobras and many of its suppliers.

The board of Petrobras is due to meet on Friday to elect new executives.

The scandal involves alleged price-fixing, bribes and kickbacks, which implicates Brazil’s ruling party.

Prosecutors have uncovered around $800m in bribes and other illegal funds. More than 200 businesses are being investigated and more than 80 people, including three former executives from Petrobras, are facing possible charges.

Petrobras shares soared 16% on Tuesday on rumours that Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff would sack the chief executive. The shares jumped a further 8% on Wednesday on confirmation of the resignations.

    • 92 japa21
      February 4, 2015 at 2:51 pm

We have a lot of birds visit our yard to partake of the treats from 4 birdfeeders and to clean themselves in a birdbath. Plus we have one hawk that comes by occasionally to see what the buffet is. It changes depending on what birds are there when it visits. It tends to prefer mounrning doves.

My goddaughter has a raving gun nut for a father and a liberal mother (my best friend). She married into a RWNJ family who couldn’t understand why she didn’t want her 3 year old son to learn how to shoot a gun. That being said, her husband is at least centrist now and he is respectful of our views. I think it is a vitally important mission that we try to engage as many sane Republicans as possible. I will listen to his arguments and engage him with respect, and he does the same for the entire family of his in-laws. You have to start somewhere.

He posted on FB today that he never knew it could take one action to make him determined not to vote for somebody. But Rand Paul’s anti-vaccination rant was enough for him. Where there is hope, we must engage. And I feel that my grand-god son(!) will benefit if we keep communication open.

My goddaughter was an Arabic analyist in the military. She was called back after 9/11 and during the lead up to the Iraq wat. If she was a centrist when she left, she was a liberal when she came back. She could never tell me what she saw, but it was enough to turn her against the Bush regime.
