A Life Saved Thanks To ObamaCare

Amy Lynn Smith: Young Woman With A Heart Condition Can Finally Get The Care She Needs Thanks To The ACA

When Jae Stewart was 14 years old, she collapsed in the gym while playing basketball. The doctors said she had a heart murmur and sent her on her way, but little did Jae know this was the beginning of a lifetime of heart trouble. Jae had her first heart attack at age 21 and another after a serious car accident a few years later. She had her first stroke before she was 30. Jae didn’t have insurance at all for many years. She’s an occupational therapist, but in 2012, when she had her stroke, her employer didn’t provide health insurance. She was sent to one of the best heart hospitals in Texas, where everyone thought she’d get great care. But that’s not what happened About 15 minutes later a guy walks in and tells me I’m being discharged.

I couldn’t even walk, because every time I got up my blood pressure would bottom out or go through the ceiling. I didn’t even have a ride home. I couldn’t believe they were going to discharge me after I had a stroke. The guy told me if I felt I needed to be there I had to go back through the ER to get admitted again. So Jae is enormously grateful for Obamacare. She’s been covered since early 2014. Her premium this year is $402 per month because she doesn’t qualify for a tax subsidy, but her other costs are low. Her annual deductible is $1,000 and her out-of-pocket maximum is $3,250. She pays $25 to see her doctor and $50 for specialists. Best of all, her prescription medications have zero co-pay. Not only does this make Jae’s healthcare costs more manageable, it means she can afford to see her doctors regularly so they can figure out exactly what’s going on with her heart.

GA TOD! Congrats on first NCLB 😎 Here is a fun exerpt from Reggie Love’s new book:

“….I’ll never forget the night I got an email from the future president of the United States consisting only of Tony Parker’s stat line. I typed an email back to Barack Obama: “Those are good numbers. But it was against a weak team.” Then I added Chris Paul’s stats. I had been Obama’s personal aide for a few months by then. But with that little exchange, something shifted in our relationship. I like to believe that learning to handle my responsibilities earned me Obama’s trust. But I also know that the strength of our friendship grew out of our shared love of basketball. Basketball was our common ground—something we could talk about that didn’t drain him like his other daily conversations could. Basketball modified the tenor of our interactions and took us from boss and underling to something more like friends…..

….Playing basketball was a thousand times more fun than anything else we did on the campaign. If Obama could have substituted a game for a town hall, nine times out of 10, he would have said let’s hoop. Instead, he’d do several town halls and try to squeeze in court time at 5:30 or 6 a.m. One day in Milwaukee, before speaking at a high school, Obama was dribbling a ball offstage. We’d played earlier in the day, and the competitive energy of the court was still alive. “You know that’s a girls’ ball you’re dribbling, right?” I said to Obama. He said he knew and then tossed the ball to trip director Marvin Nicholson. “Hey, maybe this will help your game,” he said. “With all due respect,” he said, “I will take you to the hoop. I will beat you. Reggie might be able to take me one-on-one. But, sir, there is no way you could beat me.” Obama pushed back and called him out on missing multiple layups when we played on Super Tuesday. I felt like I was back in school, watching my teammates go at it on the playground. “At least I didn’t get my shot blocked by a 14-year-old boy,” Marvin cracked. Obama snapped back: “He was 15.”……

…..The president would go to the games and watch, while making a running commentary to Michelle Obama. “They should be playing a zone,” he’d say. “They need to run a play on offense.” “Why don’t you teach them how to play basketball?” she finally said. “Fine,” he said. Next thing I knew, we were coaching girls’ basketball…..During the basketball season, Obama and I were actually courtside for a few games, him as head coach and me as his assistant. We came to see that while Sasha’s team might not love the mechanics of the game, like everyone else on the planet, they hated losing. One afternoon we played the best team in the league. It was tight the whole time. I couldn’t help myself and started shouting at the referee to force a call our way. But then it happened: Our team perfectly executed the pick-and-roll. We pulled out a 12-10 squeaker.”

Afternooooooon LP!!! Thanks a million for the link, this cracked me up:

“At least I didn’t get my shot blocked by a 14-year-old boy,” Marvin cracked.

Because I guess there are no other important issues in our country that need taking care of……except restaurants where the Health Department needlessly requires workers to wash their hands because they’d do it anyway. I remember someone tested the keypads of computers in businesses and found all kinds of bacteria and even feces yet we just need to trust businesses that handle our food.

Not all conservative Texans are RWNJs.

    From the article:
“Texas lawmakers may be leading the charge to derail President Obama’s executive action on immigration. But the White House wants it known: Not everyone in the Lone Star State wants to scrap the policy.

On that list is a conservative, Houston-based construction mogul who says giving the state’s undocumented workforce legal status would also elevate the standard of living for workers already here legally. Because undocumented workers are cheap labor for employers, legal workers must accept low wages if they want to be hired.”

    and…
“Joining Marek on the call was U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary (and former San Antonio mayor) Julián Castro, Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia, Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez and Cecilia Muñoz, the director of the White House Domestic Policy Council.”

    Good evening, TOD!

We should see some measles info on the Surgeon General’s website in the next 48 hours.

This morning I posted that I was astonished that there was nothing on the Surgeon General’s website regarding the measles outbreak. Found a few moments to call his office this afternoon; was not pleased with the 1st gatekeeper I spoke with: my concern – lack of info on SG site; real crisis as opposed to manufactured ebola crisis which is FRONT PAGE on SG site; her response “ebola front paged because of the hysteria that surrounded disease (guess she didn’t understand “manufactured) I pushed back, she put me on hold, then told me she was transferring me to someone who could help — she transferred me to an automated media inquiry line “leave your name, question, and publication deadline” Needless to say, I was PISSED and called back. Second time around, I believe I got the same person, although she said it wasn’t; let her know I was ticked at the previous call results and SURELY there was someone in the SG’s immediate office who is a point person on measles…

Was transferred to the point person; good conversation; says they are working on getting info up in the next 48 hr. I suggested they get up his KC youtube today… Damn, they tweeted a pic of him giving the interview; how hard is it to post a youtube

I’m old enough to remember a doctor’s coming to our elementary school to administer the polio vaccine to all of us. We were herded to the nurse’s office, like cattle. I don’t recall any parents objecting. It was considered “a victory for the whole nation.”

“On April 12, 1955, Dr. Thomas Francis, Jr., of the University of Michigan, the monitor of the test results, ‘declared the vaccine to be safe and effective.’ The announcement was made at the University of Michigan, exactly 10 years to the day after the death of President Roosevelt. Five hundred people, including 150 press, radio, and television reporters, filled the room; 16 television and newsreel cameras stood on a long platform at the back, and 54,000 physicians, sitting in movie theaters across the country, watched the broadcast on closed-circuit television. Eli Lilly and Company paid $250,000 to broadcast the event. Americans turned on their radios to hear the details, department stores set up loudspeakers, and judges suspended trials so everyone in the courtroom could hear. Europeans listened on the Voice of America. Paul Offit writes about the event: ‘The presentation was numbing, but the results were clear: the vaccine worked. Inside the auditorium Americans tearfully and joyfully embraced the results. By the time Thomas Francis stepped down from the podium, church bells were ringing across the country, factories were observing moments of silence, synagogues and churches were holding prayer meetings, and parents and teachers were weeping. One shopkeeper painted a sign on his window: ‘Thank you, Dr. Salk.’ ‘It was as if a war had ended’, one observer recalled.'”

Jacqueline, I also remember that, and was one of those who got the polio vaccine. In fact, there is a picture in our yearbook of all of us lined up, and my friend is the one baring her arm for the needle. We all knew people who had polio, and there was great rejoicing in the land when this became available! I also had the measles…..the LOOOOOng kind, then the three day kind in college. They are serious, and to think stupid people are not having their children vaccinated is absolutely medieval!!!!

When PBO went to Europe during his campaign he spent a lot of time planning for it. Every event had a purpose and he was ready for the attention at every turn. These rubes just show and say whatever comes to their addled heads.

I can see a person like Christie’s having indigestion on the plane over, just thinking he might be asked a question he couldn’t bully his way out off … and he probably drinks his way home. I continue to ask WHY we are still being forced to put up with these sub-humans?
