On This Day

Pete Souza: “White House valets had moved the sofas in the Oval Office to accommodate the large number of press photographers that were covering the President’s meeting with Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas. When the photo-op ended, the President said to Gov. Douglas, ‘let’s move the sofas back in place.’ Gov. Douglas didn’t quite know what to do as the President did the heavy lifting. The valets now good-naturedly cringe when they look at this picture because it was their responsibility to move the sofas back in place.” Feb. 2, 2009

Happy Monday everyone. Hope everyone has recovered from Super Bowl parties. I did go to bed early. It was a great game and we had great food, fun and friends. Sorry Seattle lost.

Love the pictures in the post, especially of the President moving the couch. He isn’t afraid to get now and do the work. This is who he is. I will be gone most of the day so look forward to seeing the video of the Kings and the Galaxy. Hope Tally gets to watch it.

This is an amazing letter that Roald Dahl wrote about his daughter and the measles. I believe he wrote this in 1968, but they didn’t find it till 28 years later. I don’t remember this story but it is so true today. All those who don’t get vaccinated should read this.

Thanks for posting this mtmarilyn. When I was nine years old I had Chicken Pox and was due to go back to school the next day, when I had a seizure. My parents took me to the hospital, and I was diagnosed with Encephalitis. The doctor’s said it was very rare for it to happen with Chicken Pox.

I think since most people were vaccinated and these diseases were basically wiped out, people don’t realize how dangerous these diseases are to their kids, themselves are others.

“When budget fights become melodramas over whether the government will shut down or default, we lose track of what the exercise is supposed to be about. Obama’s opening bid ought to be the start of a back-to-basics debate — an argument that will extend into the 2016 campaign — over what we want government to do and how we propose to pay for it.”

GM all from beautiful Chicago. We only got 18 inches so it wasn’t too bad. Really pretty today. Hope everybody is doing well. And now Seahawk fans know how Packer fans felt 2 weeks ago, watching their team blow it at the end.

My question is this…When you all get 18 inches of snow does the city still function? Are kids able to go to school? Are stores open? Are the streets passable? I ask this because if we had gotten 18 inches of snow here the DC area would be shut down for at least 3-4 days. Are you all just better prepared and why aren’t all cities prepared like this if so?

      • February 2, 2015 at 11:33 am

Donna, prior to me relocating back to MO, I lived in Chicago for 24 yrs and I can tell you, that city don’t shut-down because of little snow (18, 24, 36 inches) pooh, that ain’t nothing. lol 😀 😀 😀

        • 43 donna dem 4 obama
          February 2, 2015 at 11:43 am

But how do they keep functioning? Do they have super-duper equipment that removes the snow faster than we could? Does everyone that lives there have a super-duper personal snow blower? I guess living in the DC area I just cannot comprehend that much snow and still functioning. Oh well I pray we get away with a few flurries here and there and a dusting of snow on the grass for the rest of the winter. I just don’t think I could make it in the central part of the country in the winter months. 😯

The schools were closed today, but will reopen tomorrow. Some places closed yesterday during the height of the storm, but that was mainly to allow the workers to be safe. I am sitting at work, but a lot of people didn’t come in. But, on the whole, definitely better than what DC would be like under the same circumstances.

          February 2, 2015 at 11:47 am

Well I feel a little bit better because at least you are describing some dysfunction in the city and with its citizens when you all get these big snow storms. So I guess we snow(cry)babies here in DC aren’t complete wusses 🙂

      • February 2, 2015 at 1:16 pm

        Hello Donna.

        Schools are closed.

I didn’t go to work because I have to shovel.

Snow Removal Etiquette was set in stone for Chicago once Bilandic lost his job as Mayor because of a snowstorm.

The moment we get notice of a big snowstorm, the Streets and Sanitation department is on 24-7 notice. During the storm, the trucks are on the main streets and the highways, keeping salt on them.

This continues throughout the storm itself.

Once the storm is over, they have 4-5 hours to get the main streets dry and I mean BONE DRY. Chicago is on a grid system, and there are major streets where it is EXPECTED to be clean. Now, once the main streets, and all of DOWNTOWN CHICAGO (the business district), are bone dry, then they begin on the sidestreets.

The kids will be back at school tomorrow – I’m pretty sure of that.

I am so sorry you have to go through this. I had a stalker that took over my blog. Didn’t know me, never read my books but always had something negative to say. Then he found me on twitter and did the same; all this after declaring his love for me. I was not the one he was looking for; my middle name is not Elizabeth and I politely told him so thinking he’d stop harassing me. Big mistake; it just made him bolder and more insane. So, I just closed down everything. It’s not worth the hassle of keeping up with keeping him away. But, if this stalker is physically following you around, please be careful. Being stalked on the Internet and being personally followed is so much different. Please report it to the Police so that if you have to defend yourself there will be a record of it there.

Christie’s Office Does Damage Control On Vaccine Remarks

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s (R) office did some damage control on Monday after Christie said the government should strike a “balance” between requiring parents to immunize their children and allowing them “some measure of choice” on vaccinations.

“To be clear: The Governor believes vaccines are an important public health protection and with a disease like measles there is no question kids should be vaccinated,” Christie’s office said in a statement. “At the same time different states require different degrees of vaccination, which is why he was calling for balance in which ones government should mandate.”

Christie’s office furnished a full transcript of the governor’s remarks at the London facility of American company MedImmune, which manufactures a flu vaccine, that went beyond his remarks reported by the New York Times.

Are we to the point where we’re now telling folks to forget about vaccinating their children? The sad part is that there are stupid motherfuckers out there that will listen to this bullshit. The GOP won’t be happy until this country is illiterate, diseased, and broke.

No proof so far that NSA bugged Merkel’s phone:

(Reuters) – Germany’s top public prosecutor said an investigation into suspected tapping of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s mobile phone by U.S. spies had so far failed to find any concrete evidence.

Harald Range launched an official investigation in June, believing there was enough preliminary evidence to show unknown U.S. intelligence officers had tapped the phone, although there was not enough clarity on the issue to bring charges.

On Wednesday he said however, “the document presented in public as proof of an actual tapping of the mobile phone is not an authentic surveillance order by the NSA. It does not come from the NSA database.

“There is no proof at the moment which could lead to charges that Chancellor Merkel’s phone connection data was collected or her calls tapped.”

Range said neither a reporter for German news magazine Spiegel who presented the document, nor Germany’s BND foreign intelligence agency, nor Snowden had provided further details to his office.

    Good Morning TOD Family!

Hope everyone had a great weekend in spite of any weather challenges and the stupid super bowl and stupid Savannah Guthrie.

Kicked off Black History Month at the annual brunch at UNM. Keynote speaker was Roslyn Brock, President of the NAACP. Her speech was ok, but I was very surprised that she didn’t mention the branch bombing in Colorado. Just sayin…

    Happy belated birthday Africa!
