Ah, relieved the panic is over! It is so true, the last thing on earth we should ever do is look up symptoms on the internet, even if it’s an itchy nose they’ll tell you it’s terminal, inoperable and you’re totally screwed. Hugs and kisses to the little one!

GREAT EVENING to live in Queensland – change of state government – the RW horror government is gone. Thought they could “buy” their way to another victory. Too many did not want what they were offering

It was low-key and grassroots compared to Mr Newman’s strategy to focus on fiscal reform and economic development.

When Ms Jones had not been door-knocking, she was calling or emailing voters.

She shunned the media circus to press palms at pre-polling booths in the inner-west Brisbane seat.

Even her campaign launch was a locals-only affair and reporters were asked to leave when events got underway.

For “economic development” read – ruin the environment, help out our wealthy friends, and tell everyone if they don’t vote for us we will not build anything in their electorate. Being on the same side of politics as Rabbott didn’t help either.

I’m believing the pundit who said LCP won’t form a government – choices

Labor get 45/46 majority of 1/2
Labor get 43/44 – need the independents (3) to form a minority government

But you are correct – very close – given LCP had 78 in the last parliament and Labor had 7 – big change

Actually, no – Katter is a mix. Very anti selling off the states assets – which the wingnuts wanted to do (they were going to “lease” them – so it wouldn’t be a sale – but same objective.

Family First – US religious right – but don’t think they are winning a seat. There are 2 Katters and 1 independent as the 3 on the cross bench.

Few days for final result. At the minute means nothing for Abbott (other than his party is not doing well in the state). It is like a state election in the US, but lets Abbott know that people do not approve his party

The far-left Spanish party, Podemos, is holding a mass rally in the centre of Madrid looking to build on the recent victory of Syriza in Greece.

Tens of thousands are reported to be attending the “March for Change” – one of its first outdoor mass rallies.

Podemos has surged into the lead in recent opinion polls, and says it will seek to write off part of Spain’s debt if it wins elections later this year.

Podemos says politicians should “serve the people, not private interests”.

The BBC’s Tom Burridge in Madrid says that there has been an impressive turnout and a carnival atmosphere at the rally.

Italy’s parliament has elected constitutional court judge Sergio Mattarella as the country’s president.

Mr Mattarella, 73, will succeed Giorgio Napolitano, 89, who stood down earlier this month citing “signs of fatigue”.

The result, confirmed on a third day of voting, will be seen as a boost for Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who nominated Mr Mattarella.

Italy’s president is largely a ceremonial role, but includes the power to appoint a prime minister.

That power is one quite frequently invoked in Italy, where politics is famously volatile.

Mr Napolitano named five prime ministers during his eight-and-a-half-years in office.

Sadly, Chips, it doesn’t even shock me that she would express such disgusting sentiments.

As a Black person navigating through this world, I’ve come into contact with gross ideas like the one Mary Cheney harbors. That moment where you’ll have a white person telling you to your face, “BUT WHY CAN’T I SAY THE N-WORD?!!!! WHY CAN’T I WEAR BLACKFACE?!!! IT’S JUST AN EXPRESSION!!!” Then sometimes, they’ll go off into some ivory tower academia explanation to justify their insane opinion.

And you’re thinking to yourself and saying aloud, do you hear yourself right now? You know the history of this country and yet you’re still advocating for yourself to sink to such a nasty level? Why the heck would you want to do such a thing? What is the thrill for you? Is it the thrill of the forbidden or are you just a jackass?

The thing that always takes my breathe away and makes me want to scream is that you’re looking at such a person expressing such horrid wishes and you’re thinking, do you not see that I’m Black? Do you not notice that I’m a human being that you’re interacting with? And yet you’re perfectly comfortable ranting off.

Good Morning NW. You have stated this so well. I read the full article at the CNN link you posted and realized that this is the Cheney that is gay and my chin practically hit the floor. After all the bigotry that she has had to endure, she still can’t see the difference between someone dressing up as a women and someone mocking a race of people knowing the horrid history of this country. The only thing I can say is that this is White Privilege on full display.

    GM TODville,

Caught up on the overnight thread(s) and see that Labor won the local elections in 99’s state (yay) — haven’t figured out the Parliamentary system, but 99 confirms my hunch that this is bad news for Abbott — first, International pressure from the world’s Leader-in-Chief (PBO on climate) and now rumblings from the homefront. Based on what I’ve read about PBO’s India trip, Australia-New Zealand-Oceania is an important piece of PBO’s Asia pivot, so the world needs Australia to move forward (not move back or be mired in status quo).

Sue Duvall Smith gave a personal account on the previous thread about why she won’t see American Sniper — very moving, very troubling, personal experience — about something we all know is true — War is Hell — the death, destruction and permanent scars to so many are beyond inhumane.

I’m with Sue, don’t plan on seeing the movie (but I’m one of those oddballs who has a hard time getting into a movie unless it moves really slowly, like Babette’s Feast, LOL).

I was behind two women in line this week — one of whom was raving about how great American Sniper is. She said the usual stuff about the sacrifices made by men at war, but what she ended with surprised me. She said “you leave the theater feeling so PATRIOTIC.”

Wow, had no idea — no wonder it’s such a hit with the portion of the American population pretty much ignored by media — suburban, ex-urban, conservative families.

Our system very similar to US – except no President (Head of State is Gov General, who represents the Queen). Like the UK, we have a separate Head of State and Head of Government – the Prime Minister is the latter. The head of state is a name – no political power.

States led by a Premier who is part of the parliament (congress) – equivalent to Majority leader in the house. We have a speaker – but no power other than to “keep order in the house” (very different to US Speaker). Most states have 2 houses of parliament (like congress) – My State has only one – they abolished the Senate equivalent.

We only have 6 states. We then have a federal government – parliament is House of Reps and Senate. The majority leader in the house of reps is the Prime Minister – at the minute Tony Abbot.

The party just defeated in the State election (although very close, count not finished) is the same party as Abbott & many are blaming Abbott for the state loss. This is why it is not good news for Abbott.

I think in a moment of deep introspection Mitt came to the conclusion that he didnโ€™t want to feel the way he felt on election night in 2012. I think psychologically speaking the accession of Barack Obama has wounded a certain segment of society that never thought that they would witness a political genius that was not the same color as they are. The mental chains that were broken because of Barack Obama far outweigh the physical and economic chains they were once placed on specific segment of society.

        January 31, 2015 at 9:47 am

Delurking for a moment. You are so right. Certain circles believe if Obama can be President, they can be too. They miss the fact that PBO is a brilliant man and special in so many ways. Now we have Rand Paul, Mario Rubio, Scott Walker and others who think they can be President. They have no clue what it actually takes to do the job. It’s not a puff role. I don’t believe they have the right stuff.

        • January 31, 2015 at 10:05 am

Totally agree. Paul, Rubio, Walker are not presidential material. The fact they picture themselves as Presidents tells a lot about how shallow they are. They really THINK they have the goods !!

Nevertheless, it has to be said that the republican party and the financial elite CAN put a mediocre mind in the Oval (2000-2008!) , because anyway he’s a puppet. Republicans only need a figure head. The “elite” prefers a man who doesn’t analyze too much, who doesn’t ask too many questions.

I was fascinated in 2012 to see the big money boys rallying behind Romney instead of Huntsman. Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought it was because Romney was much easier to control…

      • January 31, 2015 at 9:53 am

I think Romney was indeed tempted by another run. But I’m more cynical than you. I think he got word that the Bush clan was prepared to dig all the dirt about the tax-evading, the financing of Bain in the beginning, etcโ€ฆ.

Romney was “protected” in 2014 because he was the only hope for republicans to win back the White House. (The real chance was Huntsman but that’s another story).

Jeb feels he has a chance. So Romney is out.

Just opened @nytimes home page and the top, front and center article is a 12-box photo lay out of “who is running and who isn’t.”

JHC — ONLY donors care about Nov 2016 now, this does not deserve top-of-page placement.

MSM try to prop up the notion that PBO is a lame duck, while anyone who has taken American history knows that lame-duck applies to the period after a Nov election and the Jan inauguration.

I hope they lose money big time on all 2016 articles until the Iowa caucuses begin next year.

Little nugget of happy news from NY Governor Cuomo who seems to be finding his Democratic legs again—-(now that the NY State Senate is firmly in the hand of the Republican party, which means the OWNERSof NY known as the real estate interests.)

Cuomo has announced a raise in tipped workers pay to $7.50 an hour from the $5.00 they currently get. This will happen at the end of the year.
Also, if the wage raise Cuomo has requested for all NY State workers is approved then the tipped workers wages will appreciate proportionately. Restaurant owners are weeping.

First Cuomo banned fracking. Now he is very intent on raising wages. The next big thing would be for him to renounce his Charter School

I am taking back all the mean things I’ve said about Andrew. Banning fracking all by itself was a BFD. Now the focus on raising wages. Good going, Governor!
