“When we’re shy about what we care about, when we’re defensive about what we’ve accomplished, when we don’t stand up straight and say:

Yes we believe people in this country should have health insurance and we’re glad that we are making that happen;

Yes we believe that families shouldn’t be torn apart, we’re glad that we’re fighting for immigration reform;

Yes we believe in middle class economics, we don’t apologise for wanting to make sure that
some wonderful young man or young woman out there can actually afford to go to college, even if their parents didn’t go.

We need to stand up and go on offense and not be defensive about what we believe in.

That’s why we’re Democrats.

And I promise you, I’m not going out the last two years sitting in the sidelines, I’m going to be out there making the case every single day.

I hope you join me.”

I could have been first this morning but no, I was on the phone with my first discussing what color towels she should buy for the bathroom. Here’s a hint ladies, whatever color you pick will be fine.

Good morning. I hope PBO has nothing planned for the weekend and can get a good rest and needed sleep. Tomorrow is our long planned 95th birthday bash for my MIL, so we’re scurrying to get final stuff done today and will take off first thing in the morning tomorrow.

    • January 30, 2015 at 8:10 am

Jackie, as usual I read a comment far too quickly and I thought you were saying it was your 95th wedding anniversary – at which point I was going to say, ‘um, congratulations’. 😳

We had some wonderful 75+ birthday parties for my folks jackie – I used to tell my dad we threw more birthday parties for him than we ever had as children – it seems that 75 is the time that birthday parties return 🙂 Have a wonderful party.

        January 30, 2015 at 9:39 am

Well, some, like Richard Nixon, tried twice and won. This is Mitt’s third try, though, and that’s getting into Harold Stassen territory, the man who ran, ran and ran again until he became a national punchline.

I wish that the presidents words to the House Democratic Issues group could be made into a gigantic poster and sent to every single Democratic county committee. These are the words to live and win by. Maybe all the groups that keep asking for money could use it for something useful, like sending this message out across the country. By the way, when I listened to the tape of the remarks, I couldn’t hear one clap when he recognized the DNC chair.

      GM JackieG.,

Wanted to let you know that I saw your response to my question about “falling down” exercises, which I found fascinating.

You are blessed with having a loving, caring, son who only wants the best for you (and no doubt is bursting at the seams with pride for your relentless and consistent rigorous exercise regime).

You’ve mentioned that like myself, you were not blessed with tall and svelte DNA that our First Family has.

IMO, there are only a couple of upsides to being short — can’t tell you the number of times that I’ve wished my arms were just a skosh longer:

      1) Airline (aka sardine) seats are not as cramped for us as they are for the tall and svelte.
      2) We are probably better at falling then the tall and svelte, since it’s a shorter distance to the ground

I’m serious about #2. I’m pretty clumsy and trip/fall regularly (not on an everyday basis, which would be worrying, but once every 6 months or so) and I’ve never been hurt, only hugely embarrassed myself — and this includes carpeted stairs at work (my biggest concern was that my full skirt wouldn’t be above my head as I was lying on the floor in front of everyone) and somersaulting over my bicycle handles in front of a bus stop full of people (when I was at UCLA, speeding down a hillside in Westwood and the front tire got caught by a rain grate — the bicycle stayed upright and I somersaulted over the handlebars and ended up on my butt — I could have had serious injuries or been killed by traffic, but I landed right in front of my bicycle).

When I was in high school I couldn’t understand how so many DUI drivers killed others but walked away unscathed. My mother said it was because they were so relaxed, and that’s been my response whenever I fall or get tossed from a bicycle — my immediate reaction is become ragdoll limp, and it’s worked (knock on wood) for me so far.

      Here’s a note on item #1:

      • 35 jackiegrumbacher
        January 30, 2015 at 9:26 am

Arapaho, you’re absolutely right about not having far to fall when you’re short, which makes it so much easier for me to curl under (rag doll effect) than my husband. Of course, it’s gotten much harder with my back problems than it was when I was younger. And, like you, I have short arms that make it hard to reach for high shelf items in a grocery story–very frustrating. And have you ever noticed that many stores will put the small petite tops and pants on a higher shelf than the larger sizes? I think it’s done on purpose to aggravate short people.
Just about every article of clothing I have seen our FLOTUS wear would make me look ridiculous. She can carry off bold designs and folds that would just bury me, even if I could afford the designer labels. I still love looking at them, though, and think she looks absolutely stunning in everything she wears.

I hate, hate, hate flying, so I don’t go unless impelled by absolute necessity. But I do have the ability to shrink into a small space, bury my nose in a book and forget where I am.

Can you say Bullet Train? We need to invest in this type of transportation instead of oil pipelines. Traveling by air is so uncomfortable and unpleasant. I think more people who are afraid to fly would take a fast comfortable train.

PBO named her last, hurriedly, making sure we know how he feels.
In contrast to long riffs about Nancy Pelosi and others.

        January 30, 2015 at 9:36 am

Vicki, his expression when he said her name said it all to me. He doesn’t think she’s right for the job and it would not surprise me to see her announce her retirement from the DNC soon. If PBO could coax Patrick Duval to take it on even for a short while, the DNC would rock and we would see some positive changes. There have got to be some dynamic, innovative Dems who could be brought on to give this organization their full attention.

    Good Morning.

    Breaking News….. A released Gitmo detainee used a cell phone….. Obama’s fault !!!!!

    • 43 Don
      January 30, 2015 at 8:34 am

In a way it is President Obama’s fault, where is Gitmo located? In Cuba, and how many letters are in Cuba? Four, and four multiplied by four is sixteen. And if you subtract eight from sixteen you get eight. And since a Presidential term is four years, and if you add two four year terms you get eight years. And since two, four and eight and sixteen are even numbers, it becomes crystal clear why a guy that got released from Gitmo that was using a cell phone is President Obama’s fault.

This is the person John Boehner supports

“The Israeli government has published tenders to build 430 new settler homes in the occupied West Bank, the head of an non-governmental organisation (NGO) that monitors settlement activity says.

“It’s the opening of the settlement floodgates,” Daniel Seidemann, head of the Terrestrial Jerusalem group, said.

He said the latest plans were the first to be announced in several months but unlikely to be the last before the March 17 general election, in which prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud is competing with other right-wing parties for the settler vote.

“This could hardly be an accident … it could not have taken place without Netanyahu’s knowledge and consent,” he said.”

The president’s budget will call for $561 billion in defense spending and $530 billion in non-defense spending—about $74 billion above sequestration levels. White House officials say that the increased funding will be offset by spending cuts elsewhere and increased revenue. “If Congress passes my budget,” Obama wrote in the Huffington Post Thursday, “our country would meet the key test of fiscal sustainability, with our debt declining as a share of our GDP.”

Google has agreed to rewrite its privacy policy after pressure from the UK Information Commissioner’s Office.

The firm must make it easier for users to find out how their data is collected and what it is used for and submit to a two-year review.

The deal follows an investigation by the regulator. Similar reviews are continuing elsewhere in Europe.

It is understood that Google will seek to strike a similar deal with other European regulators.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) found that Google was “too vague when describing how it uses personal data gathered from its web services and products”.

    GM all. TGIF.

The words spoken by PBO reminded me immediately of JFK’s speech about being a liberal which basically went, “If being a liberal means…I am proud to be a liberal.”

I always felt that one of Michael Dukakis’ biggest mistake in his campaign aganst the elder Bush was to allow Bush to get away talking about the “L” word as if it was soiled toilet paper. By not coming out strongly in support of liberalism’s values, he allowed Bush to define the debate.

PBO here, as he has always done, has set the tone for Democrats to follow. Be proud of being a Democrat and believing in the values we hold. We have seen, in both 2010 and 2014, what happens when Dem candidates eschew his advice. He won’t be running again, but if Dems want to win in 2016 and beyond, it behooves them to heed his words.

Interesting how much ‘contact’ there’s been recently with this administration and this red area. I figure the more positive news connecting the administration to folks here, the better.

I find it interesting that when ever I hear a talk about 2016 people say that there should be a challenegr to Hillary. The I hear names like Warren, O’Malley, Webb, Sanders, etc. The name I almost never hear mentioned is Biden. Hillary has now said she won’t make up her mind until July. That may be a big mistake if Joe jumps in earlier.

There is no doubt in my mind that Joe can bring in PBO’s coalition better than HRC can. I also have no doubt that he would run on finishing the work PBO has started, whereas HRC would probably run on changing what PBO has done. Yes, HRC would probably win if nominated (I emphasize the word probably). There is no doubt in my mind that Joe would win.
