Today

The President and First Lady have left for India – they arrive tomorrow morning.

They have shortened their three day visit – canceling a planned visit to the Taj Mahal – in order to make a stop in Saudi Arabia (Tuesday) to offer condolences on the death of King Abdullah and meet the new Saudi leader, King Salman.

Good morning Chips and TOD. Looking forward to President’s trip to India. New Ambassador to India, Rick Verma, came from my law firm. Have a super day. Now off to work.

Morning, Jackie:) How truly awesome is that! Someone YOU know, is now the Ambassador to India! Very cool…

      • January 24, 2015 at 12:26 pm

I have never worked with him, but I think it is pretty neat that he is from my law firm. My firm also did a lot of drafting of the healthcare law as well. It is an international law firm with offices in Brussels, London, and China, as well as national offices in Washington, DC, Chicago, New York, Palo Alto, Los Angeles and Century City. It is a good place to work – it used to be better. It has changed quite a bit over the last ten years.

I’m beginning to think that this @null on Twitter is a Wikileaks/Barrett Brown sock puppet account. It follows no one yet has 41K+ followers. Their last tweet supposedly was in June 2013, and says this:

“Join me in calling on the NSA and the US government to @stopwatchingus. Sign this now: http://stopwatching.us !/”

I also see that a few TODers are following this account, and I urge you to unfollow – it’s not a friendly account.

  11. January 24, 2015 at 10:18 am

Common now…Why should Dems feel “forced to choose between” a sensible Democrat President and a drunk-ass Bibi panderer on an issue like Iran?!?!? It’s not Netanyahu forcing them to do anything – it’s their own doggone prejudice and bullshittery!

I despise these future suppositions: so and so MAY…..then that gets taken as gospel. This situation has a long way to play out, and as we have learned from experience and Bobfr: “Trust Barack. He’s earned it.”

This kind of thing grants Bibi way too much power, and shows how treasonous Boehner is, to expect a foreign leader to do his dirty work and interfere in American policy. PBO will take café of this. Joy should know better.

Yesterday I read the statement by Kirsten Gillibrand who has said she will not vote for new sanctions. It was a carefully worded statement, but she will not support Mendez. The cutline read, “When you’ve lost Gillibrand, you’ve lost.” I don’t remember the source, have no link, but it was reliable. Some of these fence sitters have got to make some real decisions, and support what is right. This Israel link is getting to be too much and too controlling. As we say, they are not our 51st state!!!!

What nonsense! How could any American be “forced” to choose between their own President and the leader of a foreign nation. If that is a problem for them they should resign from congress.

    Good morning TOD.

I am so pleased but Definitely Not Surprised that President and Mrs. Obama will be stopping in Saudi Arabia after their time in India. Handling this delicate matter correctly—naturally.
The First Couple will offer condolences and spend time with the new King.
RW media very upset that they will have to try very hard to make this some sort of issue. Maybe they have learned something and will hold their tongues. We will see.

On another matter, I want to recommend, hesitantly, a Masterpiece Theater series from 30 years ago (no HD) that PBS is replaying now.
It is “The Jewel inThe Crown” and the setting is the last days of British Empire rule in India. It is a searing look at racial prejudice and white privilege. Searing? Horrifying more accurately.
Even if you don’t commit to the entire series just the first few hours will be a good idea.

Bibi the Nut has been roasted and toasted throughout the world. Let’s see what happens next.

      January 24, 2015 at 10:51 am

Vicki, I remember that series. I watched the entire series. Then I read the book series it was developed from: The Raj Quartet. A following series was the story of The Last Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten. Those series were, as you say, searing and horrifying. We should have learned from the Brits’ experience in India. Interesting that it’s being replayed now, very timely. Not here on our station yet.

      • 61 Vicki
        January 24, 2015 at 11:08 am

Ah, Carolyn, we are kindred souls. I too, read The Raj Quartet and then the sequel Staying On.
I missed the Montbatten series so now I will look for it.

For Game of Thrones watchers, the actor playing Tywin Lannister, Charles Dance, is in The Jewel in the Crown.
Also Tim Piggot-Smith and Art Malik went on from this old series to careers that continue today.

If you want to steep yourself in Indian history TV and films have a lot to offer.
Ghandi with Ben Kingsley for one thing has a breathtaking shot of the partition of India when the muslims went west to found the nation of Pakistan. The Singhs went east to India. This conflict remains.

Vicki kindred soul…..I also read Staying On……..Did you read The Far Pavilions? I went on an India jag years ago, and the impressions are so deep they have not left. Remember A Passage to India? And yes, those actors from A Jewel went on to have great careers. Wow! This place is great for so much :’)

Yes, to Carolyn and Betsy on Passage to India which was a terrific movie replayed recently on TV. Some of the same themes as Jewel in The Crown, especially white privilege.

I have not read The far Pavilions, but I am going on Amazon right now to fill in that gap.

    • January 24, 2015 at 10:54 am

Hopefully they get the chance to visit the Taj Mahal before they leave the WH, or after they leave it. I was looking forward to POTUS and FLOTUS visiting the Taj Mahal too, but with so much going on in the world, with the King dying, and considering the heat they took when POTUS did go to that march in Paris, visiting the Taj Mahal had to be postpone. I hope this is a successful trip for POTUS and I hope he and FLOTUS fine sometime to enjoy.

You know, thinking about all the security this visit would require, I hope they have the chance to visit AFTER 2017, when then can do so with much less flurry and protection. Then, maybe they can really relax and enjoy it. I bet they’ll want to go back to many places after to really soak up the experiences. I know they’ll still have security, but he won’t need what is needed now…..caravans, a perimeter, etc.

    Greek elections tomorrow.
If you haven’t heard about this it is because the Good Guys look poised to win.

The skimpy coverage by the media (which throughout the world means RW Media) is only issuing warnings about radical! communist! leftwing!,etc etc etc.

Similarly teensy coverage of Podemos, the left-wing party in Spain whose leader, Iglesias, appeared in Athens with Alexis Tsipras at his last campaign rally.
First we take Athens, then we take Madrid.
    Athens rally was HUGE, Obamaesque.

    • January 24, 2015 at 12:22 pm

From what I’ve been reading it really doesn’t matter who wins because the country is still going to be stuck between a rock and a hard. If they walk out or get kicked out of the eurozone where do they go to get the money to fix things? If not they’re stuck dealing with Germany. That’s probably too simplistic an interpretation but I’m not sure what other options they have.

BTW to their credit the Wall Street Journal and New York Times have had great write ups on this.

  29. January 24, 2015 at 11:45 am

Modi took many people by surprise, including some in his inner circle, by unhesitatingly embracing the US. To be fair, the Obama administration deserves credit for swiftly inviting the new Prime Minister to visit Washington within hours of his election and making good on that invitation by rolling out the red carpet for Modi four months ago.
During that September trip, expectations for concrete deliverables were low; it was a getting-to-know-you visit, a first chance for the two leaders (and administrations) to size one another up.
By all accounts, both leaders liked what they saw. Ever since, there has been a whirlwind of activity. The two leaders have met twice in the interim; innumerable high-level delegations have crisscrossed the Atlantic; and, along the way, trade negotiators forged a compromise to salvage the trade facilitation agreement.

According to BWD and TheHill the tension over the Obama mailing list is ratcheting up again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Lady Walmart wants it.

So far no word from PBO as to who, if anyone will get the list.

The campaign-in-waiting is terrified that the list will “only” be used to help build PBO’s Library.

Somone please tell me why this entitled and unhelpful woman thinks she deserves anything from Our President.

I would much rather see VP Biden in possession of The List. He has been a loyal helpmate for 6 years and counting.

    • 100 criquet
      January 24, 2015 at 12:34 pm

      Hello all.

I read a report on this from The Hill. They are so RW and anti-PBO that it’s often hard to know if what is reported is factual or supposition or extrapolation from some stray comment. If it is factual reporting then this is what I think:

If Mrs Clinton is so well prepared, so smart, so great that everyone is ready for her now while PBO is still in office and unlike PBO (according to her group of advisers etc and her ) gets sh**t done, why can’t she build her own email list and campaign apparatus?
PBO built his and was way ahead of everyone else. If she is so good she should be able to trump his efforts.
This report suggests she may be smart but not a great manager or innovator or creative thinker .
      Could be very telling.

      • January 24, 2015 at 12:53 pm

I totally agree. She has been in politics for a long time and should have been way ahead of PBO, but wasn’t. Screw her. He worked his ass off and frankly, she does not deserve his help.

      • January 24, 2015 at 1:00 pm

Having the list is one thing…knowing what to do with it is something else…

it was not the list that got the President elected once/twice…it was his grass roots effort and his message of HOPE/Change

an old time DEM that i worked with in the midterms told me that are 4 kinds of voters….

1….those that always vote, in every election…
2…those who vote most of the time say in the Presidential elections..
        3…those who vote rarely..
        4.. those who never vote…

he told me in the scheme of things that occur…that they(DEM machine) focus on the 1s and the 2s…however the President concentrated on all 4 categories, hence he was able to substantially grow the electorate ,,,,,( he also said that they did not have the ground crew or the resources to concentrate on the 3s and 4s)

personally i do not care if Hillary Clinton has “The List” because the question is can she bring out the all the categories….esp the 3s & 4s…..

that is the question..can she motivate them to vote…

      • 103 idon
        January 24, 2015 at 2:49 pm

he he. There may be a reason PBO’s team hasn’t given up the list or maybe he already gave up the list – just not to her.

    • 104 Don
      January 24, 2015 at 12:38 pm

HELL NO! I just read that article and I’m mad as hell. Then Senator Barack Obama busted his ass crisscrossing this country building relationships built on trust. And now the Clintons want to come in and almost demand that President Obama hand over the list. Maybe the Clintons should think about building their own goddamn list. President Obama should tell the Clintons to fuck off, and yes I know I’m not being practical or pragmatic, but enough with the Clintons and all their bullshit.

    • January 24, 2015 at 12:42 pm

I just figured she already had the list since I have been bombarded with mail from her not declared campaign. In reality I do not care who has my info since it will not automatically result in my allegiance, vote, or donation.
