I hope these tweets will engender a discussion on free speech and its parameters.
Commence discussion.
Me???
Good morning! Great tweets!
Hello LL!
Love the way you think on the “free speech” question of the day.
Congrats LL 🙂
Cogent essay – timely, as well. Thank you!
Congrats on first LL, and on your twitter discussion on free speech! I retweeted lots of them 🙂
Oh, it’s afternoon. I’ve been trying to catch up.
Free speech enables the GOP to pick a stone-cold moron like Joni Ernst to spew any lie she wants to on national television in “rebuttal” to President Obama’s SOTU. We can still call her out for lies and idiocy.
I agree. It’s amazing how many people will believe those lies….some too over-the-top.
Yes and we will. i will not be watching the castrator’s SOTU response but i will come here to find out what she said.
And I will join you here, not there, drink in my hand! No way do I want my brain corroded by watching any of those “reBUTTals.”
the bobby jindal rebuttal broke me from being nosy! LOL
Yep! I only look at them after the fact for things like Rubio’s water bottle gaffe! THEY ARE ALL LAUGHABLE.
Me too now 🙂
So agree with yoiu.
Interesting…..
This is amazing. I think a time will come when we will be able to use 3-d printers to print organs that are compatible with the host using their own genetic signature. One of my favorite movies is the Fifth Element in which they use something akin to a biological 3-D printer to construct a body for the Fifth Element using bio info just from a gloved hand. While I know it is fantasy so much of Star Trek in the sixties is now possible.
What materials will these organs printed from 3D be made of?
organic chemicals and that is combined as person’s DNA signature directs. I know it sounds really strange 🙂 But I do believe once we are able to reproduce organs and body parts based on on a person’s genetic signature, our life will be doubled.
Republicans have a Latino outreach plan for the State of the Union … y es loco!
Republicans will have an official response, delivered by Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, and an official Spanish response, delivered by Florida Rep. Carlos Curbelo. However:
According to a press release from the House Republicans, Curbelo will not be sharing his own thoughts and words with the public. Instead, he will only be reading a Spanish translation of Ernst’s speech.
Not just similar Official Republican content, but a direct translation. That’s a direct translation, by the way, of a response from a senator who:
… has endorsed English as a national language and once sued Iowa’s secretary of state for offering voting forms in languages other than English.
Yet here, her own party is putting her words in Spanish. So that’s awkward.
How perfect an encapsulation of Republican efforts at Latino outreach is this? “Let’s give the main platform to someone who hates immigrants—then get a Latino guy to repeat what she said, only in Spanish!”
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/01/20/1358965/-Republicans-have-a-Latino-outreach-plan-for-the-State-of-the-Union-y-es-loco
i have a problem with the notion of having the RIGHT to spew Racist Hatred…..
and yet those who spew that racist hatred are not held accountable for the influence that it has on others….racist terror is not illegal..i have a problem with that…
I do too, prettyfoot. Not sure what the solution would be here.
Other than to overcome lies with truth hate with love. (NOT Easy)
I have a huge problem with that too.
Thank you, Liberal Librarian for opening this forum on free speech.
Free speech allows the media to spew lies 24/7.
We are free to counterattack. This is not consolation because………………….
The problem is not that we have free speech.
The problem is that we no longer value truth and accuracy.
A made-up story gets repeated and repeated. Shamelessly. Just saying something true, false, documented or pulled out of someones tush, is good enough for too much of the media.
Unless and until integrity and honor and honesty are restored as American Values we are not likely to reap any positive benefit from free speech.
ON THE OTHER HAND: Tonight is the SOTU and we get to hear from President Obama who will be entirely truthful honorable optimistic inspiring enlightening. Yes, I Love President Obama.
I agree with your take on the erosion of honesty in political speech. The 2012 Presidential campaign had the corrupt media bending over backwards to allow Romney to lie with impunity. I had never been so afraid for this country’s future, as the Fourth Estate gave up any pretense of impartiality. Political directors and fact-checkers both said it was not their job to correct or point out GOP lies. Any lie that helped the GOP or their patrons (1%ers and corporation) would be accepted and promoted, any truth would be buried or immediately challenged by a focus-group tested falsehood. Propaganda works and will continue to work until the American people wake up to the con.
You’re correct i think in everything you say.
American people may already know about the con, but feel powerless. Easier to deny what they suspect is the truth about Fox and Media and try to align with the bullies and liars.
How else to explain how American Sniper a movie about our misadventures in Iraq and Afghanistan made so much money last weekend?
Instead of shame at our occupying another country and and losing so many lives—American, Iraqi and Afghani— we are glorifying the fighters.
Couldn’t agree more with your statement, Vicki. There’s been such a debasement in our public discourse that lies are accepted as facts without question if they’re repeated often enough and facts are rejected because they don’t conform to the lie.
Thanks, jackie.
Question…if he wasn’t President of the United States – do you think Barack would be using some Grecian Grey or Just for Men?
Or do you think he wouldn’t much care?
Do you think Michelle would be the one asking him to use a product?
I’m overworked and my mind is wandering to keep from frying 😀
I think he’s just as handsome with the gray as he was before he ha it. Look how superb AG Holder looks! The gray gives him a certain
Jenesaisquoi. (I know the spelling’s wrong, but you get the idea.)
I do😊
I think it makes him look distinguished. My husband is only a little older than PBO and he has grey hair too. I like it.
I do not think the President would care if his hair turned white. He just doesn’t seem that interested in style or looking younger or whatever. The President would be beautiful no matter what because he has such a beautiful spirit.
Yea, I don’t think he would be so vain either idon and I think Michelle wouldn’t care either.
No! I don’t think PBO would want to erase the gray. I think he looks fabulous just the way he is.
Mr. 57 paid $1.79 for gas at Costco this morning. In Cook County (the highest gas taxes in the country).
Imagine: gas was at least double that (and higher). That means (if my paltry math is correct) that every two weeks you’re getting the equivalent of a “free” tank of gas. Middle and lower income people are SPENDING that money. The economy benefits.
Frankly, the whiners from Alaska and Texas who gleefully gouged the consumer for a decade can STFU. Build some wind turbines.
Well said!
I love these gas price stories. 🙂
Me, too!
Oooo, I got followed by an egg who was fed up with all the “liberal and MSM lies”.
Wow. Does he have any tweets?
2!
ha!
SOTU RW bots!
Thank you LL for those great tweets. I have such a problem with this corporations are people and money is speech. We can speak out against the lies told but we don’t get heard as much as they do. I will say social media has helped.
Of course, this is my favorite fallout:
City of Paris to sue Fox News
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is planning to sue Fox News for its inaccurate reports on Muslim “no go zones,” she told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Tuesday … “When we’re insulted, and when we’ve had an image, then I think we’ll have to sue, I think we’ll have to go to court, in order to have these words removed,” Hidalgo told Amanpour in an interview. “The image of Paris has been prejudiced, and the honor of Paris has been prejudiced.”
http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2015/01/city-of-paris-to-sue-fox-news-201302.html#.VL6NG847VmA.twitter
Oh, JOB, I wish that Americans would start suing FOX whenever they’re defamed by that benighted excuse for a network. Would love to see the lawsuits swirling around FOX CEO heads like juggling plates. You could just imagine tons of “defamation of character” or emotional injury suits coming in by the carload every week and FOX spending tens of millions trying to fight them. Merci Paree!!!
Now THAT made me smile! Love it!
Nice job, LL. Cool to do an essay on tweets using tweets 🙂
My fave:
“I will defend to the death your right to be a douchebag. I will also fight to retain the right to call you a douchebag.”
(don’t know if I can commit to defending douchebags “to the death”, but I feel you otherwise 🙂
While we are waiting for the SOTU …
Barack Obama’s “A More Perfect Union” speech in Philadelphia, March 18, 2008
– The transcript: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=88478467
– The video:
I have to work tonight, but I’ve DVR’d the speech plus 40 extra minutes, just in case.
For me, the past week has been full of shocks and surprises. I’m looking forward to the SOTU tonight. PBO always calms me down when he speaks. Whenever he gives a major speech, afterwards, I can feel the ground under my feet again.
I think you so very accurately described how most of us feel, after one of the President’s speeches. I know I do. Love to just see and hear one of his laughs during them, which he always manages to squeeze in!
And that dazzling smile!
Translation (Ha!):
The White House
Washington
Your hopes and concerns are the reason I ran for office — thanks for sharing them with me!
I hope you tune in on Tuesday so I can share my ideas for meeting those concerns, and moving America forward together.
Thanks,
Barack Obama
Awesome! Thanks JER and Pete 🙂
Good Afternoon TOD Family.
Hope everyone had a great MLK Day. Our annual event was wonderful. Dr. Kathy L. Powers, professor of Political Science @ UNM, was a wonderful, dynamic speaker that we should be hearing lots about in the future. Google her! Lunch at the wonderful Jambo Cafe in Santa Fe (Google it!) and then seeing Selma. What a powerful film! So emotional. Going to see it again.
Can’t wait for SOTU! I soooo hope the President goes after Koch Roaches.
POTUS traveling to Selma March 7th to mark 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday.
Accompanied by Rep. John Lewis, I’m sure. That will be so moving.
Oh my. I am in tears.
That’s awesome. Truly awesome and historic.
MAJOR!!!!! Thank you for the news, meta.
omg…. I am only 230 miles from there…….
hmmmmmm
Hmm I’m only 237 miles from there. Hmm indeed.
Oh this is so beautiful. tears.
Very, very much worthy of a read ….
… check the video trailer at the end, as well ….
“We Don’t Need New Agreements; We Need Russia to Honor the Agreements it has Already Made
As delivered by Ambassador Daniel B. Baer to the Permanent Council, Vienna | January 20, 2015 | Comment on this iterm on our Facebook page
I would like to thank the Chairmanship for calling this Special meeting of the Permanent Council at this critical moment, and to thank Ambassador Apakan and Ambassador Tagliavini for their briefings. I would also like to extend our thanks to Ambassador Tagliavini for her tireless efforts to support the signatories of the Minsk Protocol and agreement in the implementation of the commitments they made in September. Ambassador Tagliavini, we commend you for your determination to bring peace in the face of Russian intransigence. Ambassador Apakan, we thank you, and indeed all of those working as part of the Special Monitoring Mission, for your efforts to monitor the ceasefire, despite the dangerous circumstances prevailing in many areas under separatist control in eastern Ukraine.”
https://twitter.com/Our4thEstate/status/557642473573736449
“In the months since the sides made these agreements in Minsk, we have consistently seen the Ukrainian side make good faith efforts to implement the agreements and build a peaceful resolution to the crisis. In contrast, Russia and the separatists have stymied every attempt by the Ukrainian side and the international community to resolve this crisis peacefully. There has been near constant shelling in recent days, with hundreds of rockets and other heavy weapons fired. If Russia were not sending heavy weapons across the border this violence would not be happening. Instead of facilitating and implementing the Minsk agreement, Russia and the separatists it backs have pushed to expand their area of control beyond the agreed ceasefire line. For example, some of the heaviest fighting we have seen in recent days has been caused by separatist attempts to wrest control of the village of Pisky from government forces. We have also seen heavy shelling in Debaltseve. It is not a coincidence that, as Ambassador Apakan has related again today, violations of the ceasefire have centered around four points of strategic value held by the Ukrainian government. It is all well and good to call on all sides to observe the ceasefire, but we must all also recognize that when you and I agree to a pact of non-violence, and you try to strangle me, we don’t have equal culpability if I resist your violent attack.
Now that Ukraine is again actively defending its territory, Russia is cynically calling for a new peace plan and a renegotiated ceasefire. The agreed parameters of the ceasefire already exist. What we need is not a new agreement. What we need is serious implementation of the Minsk agreement by Russia and the separatists it backs: to respect the ceasefire that has already been agreed; to allow the OSCE to monitor the entire length of Russia’s border with Ukraine; and to release all hostages and illegally detained persons, including Nadia Savchenko and Oleg Sentsov, who are being held inside Russia. We don’t need any new agreements. We need Russia to honor the agreements it has already made.”
All True …
Bob, what do you think Ukraine needs to stop Russia? Putin is so lost to common sense that no amount of international pressure, economic cost or even being a pariah state seems to make a difference to him. I think Ukraine has all the determination and heart in the world to keep fighting, but do they have the resources, arms and training they need?
The Ukrainian people show no sign of allowing Putin to win. They’ll fight a protracted war if that’s what it’s going to take. From all the reports I’m reading, they seem to be demonstrating a lot of skill and are probably receiving a bunch of support we’ll only learn about in the years ahead 😉
My concern is that President Poroshenko does not appear to be nearly as vocal in his support of his troops as he should be. And, he and others seem to be doing everything they possibly can to deny that they are not a War with Russia. They are and the whole world knows it.

Senator Harry Reid…
Wow….that bruise is not fading yet…
Older people take a longer time to heal. He must be in a great deal of pain.
Of course the Republican led Senate would table anything that actually helps the American worker. Their one and only goal is to put money in the Koch Brothers pocket and their own. Americans be damned.
And if Dems would learn anything, they’d be screaming this from the rooftops, over and over, just like Republicans would do. This one is so easy: foreign company, foreign profits and a GOP Congress CUTTING AMERICAN JOBS while the U.S. takes on all the risk.
I read earlier that they have found cancer causing agents in the water now.
How can anyone be in favor of this pipeline when it means people who live along the line will not have clean drinking water. Seriously that’s evil.
Listened to a little Tom Joyner Morning Show this morning on my way to work. Fell out laughing. They were making pre-SOTU fun. Using this song below, they took a little bit of it out and said, how about when he walks in the chamber, they play this bit from the song, where Bruno et al are saying “Don’t believe me now, just watch” and keep repeating that bit all the way to podium. Tried to imagine those Repubs, I fell out! Wish I could get a clip of just that part of the TJMS show to post here. They were having so much fun w/ that. Anyhoo, here’s the song:
.
That was Live Gazelle! I’ll be singing “Don’t believe me, just watch tonigh every time the Prez lays out somethiing he’s gonna do!
Me too, Dakota! That’s what gave me the best LOL this morning! They do stream the show too. 🙂
To bad it can’t be a Global Class action lawsuit.
Geez. I am so far beneath my beloved President. Here he is taking the time to meet with his letter writers to get to know them and make sure they will feel comfortable at the address tonight. Yes I am so far beneath him but I strive everyday to be just like him.
Idon, I don’t think our president would ever feel that anyone was “beneath” him. You have talents that he would admire as do the rest of us. We’re blessed in this time to have a president with such a brilliant mind and a caring heart and I think all of us try to be as like him as we can.
http://www.politicususa.com/2015/01/20/rumors-swirl-obama-kneecap-koch-brothers-citizens-united-executive-order.html
I saw that …..
The politicians that take that money will be scrambling like cockroaches .
Yep. I read the article and RT’d it. This may explain why the GOP talk and bill to limit PBO’s capacity to enact executive orders. Of course the way laws work in US, the President would have to sign to make it law.
Lots of updates, via RTs, in the sidebar ….
Hello VC!
{{NCLB}}
Work’s done for the day, and I cancelled my hastily made movie outing when I woke up this morning and remembered that it was SOTU! My friend and her daughter say they’re going anyway (Tuesday is ‘cheap’ day), yet though I didn’t want to go alone later, I also want to see PBO ‘live’. Choices! Choices! 😀
Your POTUS will not let you down for choosing him.
Quoting my father – ‘Ain’t that the truth!’
Hi, Only Me. I hope you’re having a good day. While I can’t wait to hear our president tonight, I’m also nervous for him. I never cared about any other president giving a SOTU, even if I voted for him and listened. But with PBO it’s as if a member of my own family were giving a major performance and I want everything to be perfect. Silly, but true.
Rest easy. Our Leader has got this.
Can someone tell me if Heidi Heitcamp has done one thing to indicate that she’s a Democrat?
Uh, no. Nobody can tell you that.
I’m sick of Republicans taking Democrat money and cowing the Democratic Party power structure into calling it a “big tent”. I understand why Heitcamp would vote for Keystone XL, but is there ANY reason why she couldn’t fight for the Democratic amendments, like using American workers and American materials? Or insisting that the oil be used for the U.S. instead of being a conduit for money flowing out of the U.S.? I’m SICK of it.
Chat away!
http://theobamadiary.com/2015/01/20/chat-away-494/
I guess the Powers That Be in the GOP didn’t think Joni Ernst was dumb and offensive enough to deliver their message of disdain for President Obama.
They have another even more ignorant guy on tap to assist.
This is the “If we can’t own it we will burn it down” strategy of the destructive losers calling themselves Republican leaders nowadays.
Not to worry. Our extraordinarily gifted brilliant and utterly dazzling Commander in Chief will deliver his message beautifully. All the wicked opposition can do is pout and whine.
amen.
