Rich Miller: U.S. Retakes The Helm Of The Global Economy

The U.S. is back in the driver’s seat of the global economy after 15 years of watching China and emerging markets take the lead. The world’s biggest economy will expand by 3.2 percent or more this year, its best performance since at least 2005, as an improving job market leads to stepped-up consumer spending, according to economists at JPMorgan Chase & Co., Deutsche Bank AG and BNP Paribas SA. That outcome would be about what each foresees for the world economy as a whole and would be the first time since 1999 that America hasn’t lagged behind global growth, based on data from the International Monetary Fund. About 3 million more Americans found work in 2014, the most in 15 years and a sign companies are optimistic U.S. demand will persist even as overseas markets struggle.

B67pbfWCAAAjVF5.jpg-large

The U.S. is breaking away from the rest of the world partly because it has had more success working off the debt-driven excesses that helped precipitate the worst recession since the Great Depression. “The progress has been far greater in the U.S.,” Glenn Hubbard, dean of the Columbia Business School in New York and a former chief White House economist, told the American Economic Association annual conference in Boston on Jan. 3. The U.S. has pulled ahead of other industrial nations partly because its policy-making has been better, according to Paul Mortimer-Lee, chief economist for North America at BNP Paribas in New York. U.S. budget policy also has been more effective than the euro region’s austerity strategy, which undercut the continent’s economy, Mortimer-Lee added.

With all the recent POTUS trips around the country (and one scheduled for Iowa again this week), I started getting all nostalgic about the times PBO came to my town – in fact, to the exact same building where I work. I frequently become almost like a groupie, walking in the same places he did and touching the same doors and railings. I’m sure you can relate to that feeling. 🙂

April 22, 2007: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yIRoBP1LYE – starting at the 6:01 mark and for about 10 seconds. He’s walking (all ALONE, yikes) in the same place that I was strolling today.

September 7, 2012: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4EySt4Scyc – starting at the 0:30 mark. He’s bounding out of the same door that I go in every morning for work. And sometimes when I go up the staircase from the ground floor, I think “OMG, POTUS and FLOTUS both used this handrail when they were here!” Given our staffing cuts, I’m pretty sure it’s never been cleaned since then. 🙂

Even though it’s not 2017 yet, I still get a little sad when thinking that he won’t be POTUS after that. You also were just talking about his library being built, which made me a little wistful to not rush the future. I hope he still has a warm spot for Iowa City in the future and maybe comes back here. We’ll definitely go and see him every time, as we did the other visits.

      Enjoy it all!

I used to work for the Navy in, obviously, a federally owned building. The then-current Commander-In-Chief’s photo was always posted in the lobby. President Obama didn’t come along until after I retired. Was stopping at another military building with a friend once, in 2010, was in the hallway waiting for her, spotted PBO’s image in the lobby, went over, looked up at it, and – damn – wish I had a candle to light or somethin’ that day, because I was planning on making a shrine out of the whole scene. 🙂

My family teases me about the “Barack altar” on the buffet in our dining room. It has photos of me with our amazing President at his birthday party in Chicago (one of those 50 for 50 winners) and in Oregon at Intel, a photo album of a White House Christmas party that some OFA volunteers were invited to in 2009, and a photocopy of the reply my daughter just received signed by President Obama. I can’t imagine taking it down until we move out of this house! Yes there are candles, but we don’t usually light them. Don’t want any wax on the memorabilia!

    • January 13, 2015 at 4:35 pm

Thanks, guys – you’re the only ones I can confess my weirdness to! 🙂 Well, Mr. Muscatinegal is cool with it, too – in fact, he refers to the service road behind my building as “Barack Obama Way” based on this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xxVxzUpHzc

    • January 13, 2015 at 5:35 pm

You’re the cutest, muscatinegal. For me, it’s seeing him where the tie he was wearing when we hugged. I hugged that tie!!
Crazy but we do cherish our time with POTUS. When he spent his last day campaigning in Iowa, remember how he teared up? He has tremendous nostalgia for what he experienced there. I don’t doubt that he’ll continue to visit.

      I cannot face 2017. Really, I cannot.

Jake Tapper just got slapped around by Bradley Cooper for trying to politicize the new movie American Sniper.

Tapper tried to say that Chris Kyle was ” very conservative about patriotism and support for the Iraq War. ”

Cooper told him the movie is NOT about the Iraq War or Chris Kyle’s politics although ” some people ” ( Tapper ) may try to present it that way.

Tapper started stammering and saying he wasn’t trying to do that.

Pardon me folks, but I am bringing this comment over from the prior thread, where we were conversating about the fact that West Virginia (which is over 90% white) is basically a welfare state and how that fact will be ignored because it does not fit the racist narrative that permeates our society.

The racist belief that “only Black people are on welfare” is a primary tenet of the racist belief system. Ever notice how Black people are never presented as taxpayers in the media? Those Black marchers who marched in the 1960’s (who were attacked by police dogs and fire hoses) were taxpayers, same as the folks who marched against police brutality last month (who were tear gassed and terrorized by the police). But the media, left, right and center, work hard never to portray them as taxpayers petitioning the government, that their tax dollars fund, for justice. During most of this country’s history, the African-American was forced to pay his/her tax dollars to a government that treated them as second class citizens, through Jim Crow laws, “separate but equal” and voter disenfranchisement. The media and those who control it will never present Black folks in this light because it would open the door to reparations claims and would present Blacks as being citizens just like White folks, instead of some “Other” or “outsider” begging for rights.

      January 13, 2015 at 5:40 pm

Not to get off of your issue, but the same thing for LGBT wanting equal rights. These people are taxpayers why can’t they get married and have the same tax treatment as married people? Texas and other GOP states will not recognize their marriages….so SCOTUS has to step in because a GOP congress won’t. Also, so many AA’s, Asians and Latinos who returned from WWI & II were not given the same rights as their white counterparts. That is why so many countries told America to fix their own country before talking to them about “human rights”.

      • 56 EricFive
        January 13, 2015 at 5:57 pm

You are correct. What I speak of is a “framing issue” i.e., the way groups are portrayed in a manner that strips them of their citizenship/staus as Americans. Black folks (or gays to use your example) are/were not taxed at a lower rate, so why should they have their liberty curtailed by the government. Following WWII many Black soldiers who returned to the South were lynched and hanged wearing their full military uniform to send the message that “nothing had changed” and that their service meant nothing. Not to minimalize the horrible treatment other groups such as gays have suffered in this country, the treatment of Black folks (the descendents of slaves) has always been especially brutal and dehumanizing.

Romney lives in an alternate reality where he is always the star of the show and the winner, no matter what the numbers say. What a sad, deluded man he is–just what this country never has and never will need.

          • 69 57andfemale
            January 13, 2015 at 5:30 pm

It still astounds me what Romney got away with. I think of all the faux outrage against PBO, and one Romney anecdote chilled me to the bone.

Queen Anne told the story of her miscarriage. That she knew something was wrong, but she suffered in silence so as “not to disturb Mitt” while he was sleeping. By early morning she had miscarried. Mitt the Magnanimous deigned to drop her off at the hospital on his way to work.

This was Ann telling a story in an actual interview that she didn’t realize was horrifying. Mitt is a sociopath and has always been a sociopath.

A friend of Mr. 57 is a stockbroker as is his brother. We don’t know why we remain friends with these people – it’s the “crazy Uncle Ralph” syndrome. Although Mr. 57 goes for months without talking to him because he’s such an awful person. When the “binders full of women” gaffe made the news, this guy said, “I don’t understand why women don’t like Romney. He’s good looking and he’s successful.”

            Wow. Just wow.

I find it quite horrifying that Ms Ann thinks this is how men should behave – says as much about her as it does about her husband. Every time she tried to tell a story about their life together they both came across as living in an alternate universe to the one I live in.

A Florida teenager was honored on Tuesday for helping to save the life of a Fort Lauderdale police officer who was processing his arrest for a parole violation.

Video released by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department shows Officer Franklin Foulks processing Jamal Rutledge after he was arrested for criminal mischief and burglary probation violations, according to WTVJ.

When Foulks suddenly collapsed, Rutledge “immediately began to kick the security fence and yell to alert officers in the area,” a statement from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department said.

That was my thought when I read the item, only bad habit of Pierce is to support journalists – all of ’em and any of ’em.

Meanwhile Australia sent some dude from the senate that I have never heard of – and not one word anywhere that the PM should have gone. And come to think of it – where were all the world leaders when Sydney was in mourning after a terrorist attack? Guess the folks who died weren’t part of the media – who like to set the agenda for the world. Used to be they reported the news – now they are the news.

The next 2 years are probably going to be the scariest of my life – I think the goal of the US media – with help from the GOP – is to crash the world economy, so the idiots who voted for a GOP congress in 2014 will deliver a GOP President in 2016. It seems PBO and his administration is all that is standing between the world and this event.

    • January 13, 2015 at 8:54 pm

BOOM! I’m dying to see what Tapper’s response (if he has one) will be…. Will he tell Pierce to go “Google me on Salon?”
