Morning, SW. The idea of seeing and hearing Mitch McConnell for the next two years is too depressing to think about. I don’t know the name of every Senate majority leader in history, but he’s got to rank near the top of the worst and most despicable, not to mention the most ethically challenged.

Congrats DF. The closest I got to the President was when he came to speak at the VFW convention several years ago. He was at the Civic Center across the street from my office. I never saw him though as he went in and out from an exit no one knew about. That put Arizona in the spot light (once again) when some were strutting up and down the street carrying guns. I have seen Air Force One fly in and out of Phoenix though. I’ll take what I can get.

Morning, Df. I hope you have a photographic memory because we’re all going to want every detail–what he wears, how he looks, oh, and what he says.

Morning all. You can tell you’re aging when you look out at a snowy morning and say “ugh,” rather than “ooooh.” Snow means slippery driving and walking and I want it to go away. Bah humbug.

    • January 6, 2015 at 8:02 am

GM. Though we don’t have snow here, I agree with your assessment, jackie.

Do your stretches and exercises. 🙂 Today is my food pantry day so gotta get ready. Depending on how busy we are, I lurk off and on through the morning. Hope everyone has a good day! bbl…….

Hope you, too, have a good day, Tn. Fact is, I’ve been exercising for years–go to the gym and on alternate days take long walks. But these ‘falling down’ exercises are going to kill me or break my back, whichever comes first.

    • January 6, 2015 at 8:24 am

That’s because as we get older, we move away from the fascination and wonder of snow. “Snow Day” does not mean a day off from school and having fun in the snow. It means a day of potential lost wages. It means the cost from possible damages related to the weather. It means the labor associated with clearing away the snow.

And where I live, “Snow Day” is more like *ICE DAYS* when everything shuts down and the only news, 24/7, is about the weather.

Me, too. I got out there to shovel before Mr. 57 did something stupid. Exercise I guess, but my lungs were not happy.

he’s coming off a bout of pneumonia. Wish the doctors in your family were in his “network”: his doctor wouldn’t see him, after he’d been sick for three weeks and she told him to “drink more water”. she is going to be so effing fired. He’s 75. The ER doctor said he waited too long to be seen.

That being said, he’s been feeling good the last few days and I fully expect him to do something idiotic like crawl out on the roof to get rid of the snow. The least I could do was shovel.

Move to my place. It’s ‘winter’ now and it’s freezing 25 deg C. Free doc service and ice in its truest form.

From the way workers in this country vote, AMK, I would say that must be how they feel. Each election millions of people dutifully push the button for those who are robbing them blind and reject those who are trying to improve their lives. Propaganda works.

pitiful isn’t it? the same thing happened in our side of the desert. yung’uns voted for the rw gobinment (for ‘development’) and they just made it easier for the corporates to fire them.

Politicians and celebrities in Germany have joined a media campaign against Pegida, a group protesting against what it sees as the “Islamisation” of Europe.

Former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and retired footballer Oliver Bierhoff are among 80 figures to back a petition in German newspaper Bild.

It comes after rival rallies took place across the country.

Some 18,000 people attended one anti-immigration rally in Dresden on Monday.

There have been weekly protests by the Patriotic Europeans against the Islamisation of the West (Pegida) since October.

But counter demonstrations have sprung up, with thousands marching in Berlin, Cologne, Dresden and Stuttgart.

Former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, actress Karoline Herfurth and footballer Oliver Bierhoff are among those opposing Pegida

Figures joining the Bild appeal said “‘no’ to xenophobia and ‘yes’ to diversity and tolerance,” according to the newspaper.

Pegida “appeals to hollow prejudices, xenophobia and intolerance,” wrote former Social Democrat Chancellor Helmut Schmidt.

“A look at our past and economic sense tells us Germany should not spurn refugees and asylum-seekers,” he added.

Another former Chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, also voiced concerns, along with actress Karoline Herfurth, who appeared in The Reader, and TV presenter Thomas Gottschalk.

British Chinese people and community leaders have been telling Newsbeat that racism against them isn’t taken seriously enough.

Michael Wilkes from the British Chinese Project says people regularly contact the community group about physical and verbal abuse.

“We’ve been getting calls and emails about racist incidents from right across the UK,” he says.

“There’s a lack of knowledge about the words Chinese people find offensive.”

    ///

The last census showed 0.7% of the population were Chinese in England and Wales – that’s 392,700 people.

  10. January 6, 2015 at 9:05 am

Yes, desperation and the fear of the “other” that’s as ancient as the boogeyman. It takes an enlightened mind and an evolved civilization to embrace diversity and learn from differences. Sadly, our so-called advanced civilizations, which are richer and more technologically savvy than any in history, are still a very long way from being either enlightened or evolved.
