Just a quick shout-out to everyone!

I actually thought that when I started working from home, I’d have more time to hang out here. Not.

    Stay warm and safe!

Congrats to swbluega! Has anyone else gotten error messages when trying to read the previous two TOD posts?

Helloooooo Judith! I think I know what happened with those posts – I started them last night and they both posted with yesterday’s date, so I had to change them to make them appear up top. So, I’m guessing the original links didn’t work. Grrrrr!

An Update on President Obama’s Clemency Initiative

Eight months ago, the Department of Justice announced the Obama administration’s clemency initiative. The goal of this effort was to reform the Office of the Pardon Attorney – which is the department that serves as the liaison between DOJ and the President on recommending individuals for clemency. As was reported at the time:

The president complained that the pardon attorney’s office favored petitions from wealthy and connected people, who had good lawyers and knew how to game the system. The typical felon recommended for clemency by the pardon attorney was a hunter who wanted a pardon so that he could apply for a hunting license.

And so the person in charge of the Office of the Pardon Attorney was replaced by Deborah Leff and a new initiative was launched to commute the sentences of nonviolent drug offenders who were caught up in the disparities in laws governing crack and powder cocaine.

Along with many others, I was a bit disappointed that in December, all of this led to commutations for only 8 people currently in prison. But I’ve been keeping my eyes open for any reporting on how the process is going. The first comprehensive look at that came yesterday from Josh Gerstein. Of course he has to feed the cynicism beast by calling the whole thing a “quagmire” and searching desperately for reasons why its an absolute failure. But sifting out the wheat from the chaff, there are some helpful nuggets of information included.

I just assumed the President was going to commute the sentences of thousands of nonviolent drug offenders but he has to do it in a way that does not mess with other pieces of his agenda. I’m one of those folks who takes the long view. My take on how our President operates is do a lot of stuff undercover with very very little fanfare so that when he makes his big move, it doesn’t get sabotaged. I really really love this approach. I also think that it speaks well that our President wants to bring equity to the Pardon Office. This is absolutely a big phucking deal as VP Joe would say.

I consider the image one of the BEST evar that the WH has done. The image is ICONIC. I hope the President does a book on race and politics and uses it as the cover. I love this image so much I’m going to enlarge and print it so I can frame it for my office. It is a reminder of what my President has to deal with everyday – the hate, the fear the violent speech. I want a constant reminder that I need to have his back at all times because he is the only ONE working for the American people, really all peoples around the globe.

Though, 1) he/she doesn’t listen to me and b) this might be the perfect opportunity to bundle the twins up and help them make a ‘widdle’ snowman/snow angel. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) plan if the Supreme Court reinterprets Obamacare to take health care away from hundreds of thousands of his constituents is to β€œdo nothing,” according to a local news report, even though he and his fellow Wisconsin Republicans have the power to save these individuals from that fate. This may not be a particularly surprising revelation, as Republican elected officials throughout the country have done little to conceal their disdain for the Affordable Care Act, yet Walker’s willingness to admit this fact could have the ironic result of saving Obamacare from the justices. As Brian Beutler explains in the New Republic, the Court’s five Republican members are much more likely to β€œplay along” with an effort to undermine health reform β€œif the repercussions are likely to be modest.” Walker’s admission drives home the fact that these repercussions will be quite severe.

About those death panels…….they are Republican made. Told you, they’re just not that into ordinary people.

Two suspects have been arrested in the shooting of a pair of NYPD police officers on Monday night in the Bronx.

CBS New York reports that two people are in custody in connection with the shooting, which took place after three plain clothes officers responded to a robbery call at a grocery store.

The suspected gunman in the robbery was arrested in the Bronx on Tuesday afternoon, according to WNBC.

The other suspect was arrested in Manhattan after police said he went to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound he suffered during the robbery Monday night.

The identities of the suspects have not been officially confirmed, and the names of the officers who were wounded were also not released.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said both officers are expected to recover.

“They went above and beyond the call to protect their fellow New Yorkers,” de Blasio told reporters. “Thank God the officers are doing well and will recover.”

If he receives an ultrasound, I’ll be OK with the shorter. I should not enjoy his downfall but can’t help it. From CNN:

A federal judge has sentenced former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell to two years in prison, followed by two years of supervised release, for 11 convictions on public corruption charges.

His sentencing ends the dramatic downfall of the Republican governor once heralded as a rising star — tapped to give the party’s 2010 rebuttal to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union, and a fixture on short lists for national office.

Former Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell was sentenced Tuesday to two years in federal prison. McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, were convicted in September of lending the prestige of the governor’s office to a Richmond area businessman in exchange for $177,000 in loans, vacations and luxury items.
