Oh my goodness gracious me. Now I have seen this photo a number of times. But NW you post it here and I see it anew. Look at his face! Look at his pure rapturous presence in this tiny yet enormous moment. He can be present with us in the most powerful, down to earth human and humane way, as things occur, despite all the — you know, the Niagra of baloney and badness. But none of that sticks to him — he is within an invisible shield (any baby boomers recall the toothpaste ads back in the day, where an invisible, /though we could see it of course/ shield protected a giant molar from tooth decay?). He is here with this gleeful baby; he was on the golf course with the soldier-couple getting married in paradise; he was with that young man in Chicago, posted by Linda, asking for help. I will never tire of seeing this man show up as him, as our hero leader. NerdyWonka, bless you for what you do, here, on twitter, in the wide world. It matters so much. Happy New Year.

I just spent a good amount of time perusing Pete’s 2014 Photo’s. Some of them brought tears to my eyes. He & his staff are awesome and very talented. I emailed the link to family and friends. I want a lot of people to see the many different sides of President Obama and what goes on that we are unaware of.

The story about the photo of the Afghan vendor being put back up when Pete heard that the vendor and his family were coming for a tour and how emotional they became when they saw the photo up on the wall in the West Wing. {{{{{hugs}}}}} Pete, his staff and PBO

Well, I am shocked. Gallup must be very distressed, but they can’t avoid letting the truth (well, their version of it) out.
For the first time in forever, PBO is at 48/48 at Gallup. I am sure all the media is making a big story out of this. Specially since what the poll really shows is that PBO is probably at 53/42.

I don’t understand what that means? Did you move the washer & dryer out of the way so the new ones could be installed? Were the new ones delivered by you also or by Sears or such?

LL, I need more details!!! πŸ˜€

      • December 30, 2014 at 2:10 pm

Ok, so, I’m renting my brother’s house. And when me and the missus lived in Palms for a couple of years, we had stashed our washer and dryer here.

When we moved in, his appliances were plugged in, so we just kept using them.

Last night, they both died. Let me tell you, scooping water out of a washer is no fun. Kind of back breaking.

So this morning, I moved everything away from the wall, disconnected, connected my appliances, and all is right with the world.

So, yeah, *I* did manly work. I will now accept praise.

The others are the photo of PBO all up in Putin’s face, with one hand spread out in the classic, “come at me bro” stance, and the one of he, Malia, and Michelle at the National Portrait Gallery. PBO looks so young, cool, and hip in his jeans and short brown leather jacket.

Is Steve Scalise a racist? There’s no way for anyone to know what’s in his heart, but that’s really not the issue. The question is whether Steve Scalise lends the support of his office to white supremacists and neo-Nazis and the KKK, and it’s clear that he does. For whatever reason.

This also reveals how deeply the Republican Party is embedded with racists and white supremacist groups, and now David Duke is threatening to out the politicians he’s connected to, if the GOP sanctions Scalise: David Duke: Focus on Me and House GOP Leader Is β€˜Insane’.

Overall, Duke was rather flabbergasted by the new focus on Scalise. He said he has hosted both Democratic and Republican legislators at everything from conferences to his children’s birthday parties. He said he has met with Democratic legislators at least 50 times in his political life.

And he delivered a warning to both Republicans and Democrats: Treat Scalise fairly, and don’t try to make political hay out of the situation. Or he said he would be inclined to release a list of names of all the politicians β€” both Republicans and Democrats β€” with whom he has ties.

β€œIf Scalise is going to be crucified β€” if Republicans want to throw Steve Scalise to the woods, then a lot of them better be looking over their shoulders,” Duke said.

    • December 30, 2014 at 3:47 pm

Is that a threat or a promise?
      Bring it!
Let him open up his Ace-in-the-hole that he has been secretly hiding.
Thanks to our PBO presidency these last seven years, shit has been hitting the fan, white hoods uncovered, some Dems have been exposed running and losing, so-called liberals whining less and still doing nothing.
So this is no surprise to me how connected undercover racists are playing a major part of this government.
It is like how the Mafia connection was able to flourish in this country(by the way, under the F.B.I. under Edgar Hoover was scared to deal with and in total denial) while he allowed these white hooded terrorists to thrive.
Of course, he was too busy trying to hunt down communists in his silk panties.
The KKK is thriving in the the police departments, courtrooms, jails, judges, prospectors, lawyers all over this country.
They don’t have to “Look over their shoulders”. Just look in the mirror. They know who they are.

Agree with you, LDS. David Duke is blackmailing Congress and when they let him get away with it, they are saying that threats work and they are open to more blackmail and extortion. I’d love to see Duke release his list and I don’t care who’s on it. Let it all come out in the light of day so people will know who their so called congressional representatives really are.

Good afternoon and an early Happy New Year to everyone. Have been reading, not writing much for the last several days. Have LOVED the pictures for each month. Thank you for showing those and arranging the poll. I will be happy with whatever ones the group chooses, as I love them all.

At my age I have a lot of living and events to look back on and reflect about, and right now I’m reflecting on all the racist sentiments coming out into the light. Charlie Pierce had a very good history of the U.S. post 1948, and the influence of Strom Thurmond. This needs too be known. It really hurts to see so much hate and bigotry spread around the internet, which means it is now out in the open. However, I continue to believe that getting this out in the light is the only way it can be dealt with, and the President believes that also.

It is highly uncomfortable for all of us, and does not let us sit back and think we are okay. We have to accept (we wasps) that we have been part of the problem for centuries. This horror of the NYPD shows that the South is not the only area with this contagion and disease.

HOWEVER, this problem could never have been faced unless it came out in the open. It would have continued to fester and roil underneath, and as painful as it is, this is the first step towards reconciliation. So many events…..like the plans of the NYPD, the actions of Scalise, etc., etc., used to be kept hidden, so they could continue to grow and harm unseen. Now, with social media, secrets can no longer be kept, and eventually, a cleansing will begin.

I think the timing of two events has been necessary for this cleansing to take place. First, the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States. He has undergone more obstruction, taken more hate and vitriol, than could have been imagined before. Yet, he has stood tall with grace and class, and shown the kind of person he is, and also, by contrast shown what the haters are. Actions like these do not have immediate effects, but they do work in people, and people will begin to actually SEE what is happening and acknowledge the wrongness of the hate.

Second, the election of Pope Francis as head of the Catholic Church, the largest single group of people who call themselves Christians, and the oldest, therefore a very influential person. I just cannot see this confluence as accidental; I’m too much of a mystic to believe that. These two people were necessary, I think, to keep the world from destroying itself. I am thankful that they are friends, and are working for similar goals, and see similar problems in the world.

Hope you all have a very happy New Year. Thinking about so many whose families have suffered loss and extreme physical problems. These are so rough to live through. We are very thankful in our family, because my husband, the father and grandfather of our tribe, is recovering from his severe illnesses this fall and once again making people laugh. We feel particularly blessed to still have him, sound of mind and heart.

Very well said, Carolyn. I read Pierce’s piece and he is right on. Too few people know the history of racism, not as it existed in the old days in the south, but as it has existed and thrived in the 20th and 21rst centuries. Getting this ugly underbelly of American society exposed to the light is a good step forward, but it’s going to take lots of relentless effort on a generational basis to rid this country of the moral pestilence that eats at our society and undermines our real ability to move forward as a nation.

    • December 30, 2014 at 3:57 pm

Carolyn, you just read my mind, heart and soul while I was posting up above.
I asked some of my WASP friends to ask their parents what were they doing during the Civil Rights struggle. Some of them were truly embossed to tell me their answers. Some were ashamed of their answers. Some could not believe they were raised by these parents who just sat comfortable by and did nothing.
I am so gad to be alive to see this happening.
It is not going to be a picture perfect moment. It was never meant to be.
      It is a HEART thing.
      Thank you for your comment.
Happy New Year to you and your family!

      • 128 carolyn
        December 30, 2014 at 4:41 pm

One reason I believe that all that is happening will slowly make a difference, is because there are those of us brought up in white privilege who honestly did not know the dailyness of the struggle and the horror that young black males and females lived with. This has been brought up in graphic form so we can no longer not see and can not deny. Sometimes these things take a long time to change hearts and minds. My young AA men in my classes have taught me so much…..and I owe them. The first step is to help these certain people understand what white privilege is…..it is not wealth…..it is an accident of birth.

My strongest prayer is for true reconciliation and understanding, and as Bob says, I also believe we need a Truth and Reconciliation movement here. But, the awful truth is, the underbelly had to be exposed in living fullness before this could happen. The pus coming out of the boil is putrid.

Boehner……..he’s exposed now, too. We see him for what he is. He can’t hide.
