2014: Japa’s Most Memorable Moments

by Japa

****

(by Pete Souza)

The Timex Man

This is really an expansion of a comment I made earlier.  And it is representative of how I view the year 2014 and what truly will make it, in years to come, perhaps the most memorable year of President Obama’s two terms.

I had originally told Chips that I was going to come up with a memorable moment for each month.  Then I was trying to look for a memorable moment for each day.  The fact is, there were not many days that did not provide its own memorable moment and some days had more than one.

So then I tried to look at the entire year to see what all those possible memorable moments had in common and what the overall theme of this year was.   And quite simply, as I was doing my considering I realized what our President reminded of…the old Timex commercials.

Basically, the commercials would show a Timex watch being subjected to all kinds of abuse, then there would be a close-up showing the watch still working.  The tag line was “Timex, it takes a licking but keeps on ticking.”

And that is what this year has been like for the President.  It started with all the abuse he was subjected to concerning Obamacare.  Some of it was hangover from the initial website problems, but it kept building because of what supposed to be a failure of sufficient enrollment.  Of course, President Obama kept his cool when all others were starting to panic (except those of us who knew better).  He kept on ticking.

It continued on and on.  Putin invaded Crimea and all we were subjected to, from the media and the right and the left, were how strong and leaderlike Putin was and how the President had obviously been outplayed by a master.  Again, we knew better, even when the rest of the country was, in their hearts, laughing at him.  But he kept on ticking.

Then came the ISIS crisis.  Again, we were told he was too late and too little.  Some of us knew better and he kept on ticking.

Then came election season.  He was excoriated by the right, with all the GOP candidates trying to make the election about the evil socialist in the White House.  And of course all the Dem candidates (though not all) trying to keep an arm’s distance, and sometimes even more, from him.  But he kept on ticking.

Then came all the post election analysis and how the voters rejected his policies and how the right crowed and how the left complained that he hadn’t done enough or he had hurt them by doing too much.  And the media declared his next two years to be the lamest of all lame ducks.  But he kept on ticking, and ticking and ticking.

Sue Duvall Smith calls him the energizer President.  He is so much more, though that is definitely a side to him.  He is beyond the “Keep Calm and Carry On” slogan.  He is something truly special and quite possibly, more than any other year, 2014 is emblematic of just what he is and what he means to the country and specially to us at TOD.

Yes, there have been many memorable moments in 2014 and I have truly enjoyed reliving them with my fellow TODvillians.  Just like there have many other instances than those I have listed above.
But to me, looking back from some point in the future, I think I will consider 2014 as the memorable year of his Presidency.  He has taken a licking but he keeps on ticking.

He is The Timex Man.

    About that picture:

  5. December 26, 2014 at 7:47 pm

” Pakistani troops have killed the Taliban leader who planned the massacre of 132 children at a Peshawar school earlier this month, a senior government official claimed.

Saddam Jan, commander of one of the most militant Taliban factions waging war against Pakistan, was killed on Christmas Day in a shoot out with army forces in Khyber agency, a remote tribal area close to the Afghanistan border.

Shahab Ali Shah, a local government official, said Jan “was responsible for facilitating the massacre at the Army Public School and College”.

“He was the mastermind of several attacks carried out throughout the country. We had credible reports that he facilitated the Peshawar school attack,” he said. ”

    • December 26, 2014 at 7:49 pm

” ISLAMABAD (Tribune News Service) — Ten days after Taliban militants massacred 148 mostly children at an army-run school in the northern Pakistani city of Peshawar, the nation’s politicians this week gave the military two years’ carte blanche to wage, as it saw fit, the decisive phase of the country’s protracted civil war with Islamist terrorists.

The scope of the conflict was broadened beyond the Taliban Movement of Pakistan, which has waged a bloody insurgency since July 2007, to include all jihadist and sectarian militants on Pakistani soil. That decision echoes the vow Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif made Dec. 17, the day after the school massacre, not to differentiate between so-called “good and bad Taliban.”

The military’s nationwide campaign, effectively underway since the June launch of a massive offensive in northwest tribal areas, is being closely watched by the United States and other countries to see whether it encompasses Pakistan-based militant groups that have repeatedly attacked neighboring Afghanistan and India.

Dozens of political leadership figures had gathered Wednesday at the prime minister’s official residence in Islamabad to decide on a “national plan of action” under the stern gaze of the army chief of staff, Gen. Raheel Sharif, considered the nation’s most powerful man.”

WELL DONE JAPA…EXCELLENT! HE IS INDEED THE GREATEST PRESIDENT WE WILL EVER SEE. THE OTHER NIGHT I WAS WATCHING THE MOVIE LINCOLN…AND OF COURSE SO MANY THINGS REMINDED ME OF PBO…HIS AUDACITY TO WALK THE LINE AND CROSS OVER IT…TO FINALLY EASE THE PAIN OF SLAVERY. UNFORTUNATELY…ONE PRESIDENT COULDN’T DO IT ALL…IT HAS TO BE THE PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY…THEY HAVE TO STAND BEHIND THE PRESIDENT AND SHARE THEIR LOVE AND RESPECT FOR OTHERS ACROSS THIS COUNTRY…OTHERWISE…THEY WILL DIG THEIR OWN GRAVES…HATE IS NOT A GARDEN…IT WILL WITHER AND IT CAN’T GROW. IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO TURN THE LIGHTS ON…BTW…THAT’S NOT SNOW…IT’S ANGEL DANDRUFF!

  11. December 26, 2014 at 8:14 pm

TOD-ers have always known PBO is ONE TOUGH HOMBRE. Simple-minded AND Ignorant AND Hate-filled AND Detached AND Duped people can’t see it and/or won’t. PBO upsets their pseudo-reality by being a once-in-a-life-time, brilliant, nuanced, compassionate, worldly leader, WHILE conspicuously remaining a real, humble human being. Americans tend to have very short memories and expect instant gratification. “Tuffness” is much easier for them to understand. JOHN WAYNE! ST. RONNIE! dubya playing dress-up in a flight suit: “brang ‘um-on!” President Barack Obama is the real thing without all the BS. I love the way he’s called an “Energizer Bunny” here with so much affection. But he ain’t no bunny. He’s a badass ………

Japa, I love your Most Memorable Moments! Your analysis is so true. Every day the President is quietly, stealthily, steadily and successfully steering the ship and proving the naysayers wrong!

The other day the friend that I helped navigate the CoveredCA website, the one who I had been trying to convince for a year to look into her ACA options, the one who had been listening to all the Repub scare stories and was afraid to switch from her expensive non-ACA plan – well, she called me and thanked me. She said, “By the way, we signed up for that insurance thing you showed me; thank you so much for your help!”

That’s my personal illustration of how PBO’s method of taking the long view works. 🙂

I checked them out a while back, and – whoever runs it – they claim to be an “Internet News aggregator and powerful news search engine,” are connected to a website, and seem to show what’s “trending,” from somebody’s perspective. I take it all with a grain of salt, like Wiki.

japa…..excellent editorial! I love this title “TImex Man” So many times the press and others have said “he’s done, stick a fork in him.” Never true…..not at all. And those who disdain him, do so, and did so (demos in the last election) to their own detriment. Thanks for this positive piece. Love it.

Japa, your essay is brilliant and the Timex analogy is perfect. The counterpoint to all of the President’s successes has been the consistent wrongness of his opponents. They were wrong on health care; wrong on Benghazi, wrong on the so-called tax scandal that was going to being him down; wrong on Ebola; wrong on ISIS; wrong on the stimulus; wrong on the economy; wrong on the auto industry; horribly wrong on climate change initiatives; wrong on our president’s leadership skills and wrong on his immense stature throughout the world. President Obama is a giant walking among the tiniest of creatures who are so blinded by hate that they are literally stumbling around in the dark. No other president will ever fill the shoes of the great man who is our president. He has set a standard that will likely not be matched again in this century.

Fear is for people who don’t get out much.

People who don’t travel, Rick Steves said in a November op-ed, “don’t see the world firsthand, so their opinions end up being shaped by sensationalistic media coverage geared toward selling ads. Sadly, fear-mongering politicians desperate for your vote pile on too. …

“The unhappy consequence: We end up being afraid of things we shouldn’t be — and ignoring things that actually do threaten our society, such as climate change and the growing gap between rich and poor. …

“It seems that the most fearful people in our country are those who don’t travel and are metaphorically barricaded in America. If we all stayed home and built more walls and fewer bridges between us and the rest of the world, eventually we would have something to actually be fearful of.

“I’ve found that one partial solution is a simple one: travel.”

I think this is very true….

We are having Top 10 Moments coming at us from all angles. 😉 It’s now VP Joe’s turn

2014 is coming to a close, and, looking back, it’s certainly been a busy year for Vice President Joe Biden — both online and off.

So this year, we thought we’d share some of our favorite digital moments with the Vice President from 2014. From starting an official Instagram account to posting his first White House selfie with President Obama, here in no particular order are 10 of the best moments from 2014 — and, of course, stay tuned for more to come in the new year.
    1. Being Biden: The Vice President meets a powerlifter.

    2. No More: The Vice President speaks out against domestic violence and sexual assault.

japa21 – Thank you! That was just a wonderful story. I couldn’t help but laugh my way through it, however. Because, I think we both know, we all know, you will be saying the same thing in 2015 and in 2016, you will just talk about other events and ~ even if you were to come up with all new words ~ underneath those words, “the root of the root” will be the same wondrous feeling we all share about his accomplishments and personal traits. And, in your fine words, he’ll still be ticking. And “there’s an endless supply of paint,” no matter what’s said about him. And we’ll still have a warm spot in our hearts for the man. Thanks again.

Japa, this is perfect. I couldn’t come up with top 10 moments because in every instance it was PBO proven right after the latest hysteria by the GOP which really doesn’t make for “moments”. I would add to your list the hysteria of the children at the border (who would have ever thought we’d be a nation afraid of children!) and ebola. The whole year was utterly ridiculous with President Obama carrying on and accomplishing so much while the country drowned in histrionics. Your editorial says it so perfectly. Thank you!

I would be happy if VP Biden or Gov O’Malley step up …

… but, that’s not the core message. From now, #FORWARD, I’m going to posting Tweets that contrast, as starkly as possible, the choice President Obama offers to Americans, every day. Will increase the pace and intensity as 8 Nov 2016 approaches.

That expression ‘it’s for ALL the marbles’ well, Yes It Is, on Election Day 2016 (and, very importantly, State after State, in primaries throughout 2016, from the top of the slate to the bottom).
