You too, LP! I was truly only walking down the hall, checking for a signal, on my way out to buy cat food, When our dearly loved NW tossed this thread into my inbox, and Gosh, Goll-lee, I just had to Leave A Comment! Y’all know what that’s like, especially when one is not even trying! It’s like an early Christmas present. Maybe even the only one I will get. Nearly 60F in Seattle today, cool wind, but lovely. And that is just wrong. Errands, done, cup of tea in process, then some food preparation. I seldom get to sit and listen to an entire live press conference, but am running at least 3 hours late on everything today, by design. May regret it later, hope not! Bigs hugs all around, {{{{{TOD}}}}}.

The unidentified United States spy being swapped as part of a diplomatic breakthrough between the U.S. and Cuba is almost certainly a former cryptographer in Cuba’s Directorate of Intelligence who worked secretly for the CIA until he was arrested on espionage charges in the mid-1990s, according to a former U.S. intelligence officer and other sources. Rolando “Roly” Sarraff Trujillo was “an expert on cryptography for the Cuban Ministry of Interior who was arrested in 1995 and sentenced to 25 years in jail,” said Chris Simmons, a former Defense Intelligence Agency specialist on Cuba.

DNI spokesman Brian P. Hale said in a prepared statement that the asset being released spent 20 years in a Cuban prison for his work for the U.S. Many of the details of his cooperation are classified, but Hale said he was “instrumental in the identification and disruption of several Cuban intelligence operatives in the United States and ultimately led to a series of successful federal espionage prosecutions.”

Indeed, according to Hale, the spy “provided the information that led to the identification and conviction of Defense Intelligence Agency senior analyst Ana Belen Montes; former Department of State official Walter Kendall Myers and his spouse Gwendolyn Myers; and members of the Red Avispa network, or ‘Wasp Network,’ in Florida, which included members of the so-called Cuban Five…..continued”

“Pope Francis, who turned 78 on Wednesday, celebrated the occasion by handing out 400 sleeping bags to homeless people living on the streets in Rome. There are approximately 3,276 homeless people currently living in Rome, half of whom have no shelter at all and live on the streets, a recent survey found. According to Religion News, the Pope’s archbishop in charge of charitable giving, Konrad Krajewski, led a group of volunteers around the local area to distribute the sleeping bags. “This is a gift for you from the pope on the occasion of his birthday,” the group told recipients. The pope also held a birthday lunch at the Vatican, with four homeless individuals among the guests.

But if you’re surprised that Francis would rather give out presents than receive them for his birthday, you haven’t been paying enough attention to this pope. Last month, despite some internal opposition in the Vatican, the pope ordered that public showers be installed in St. Peter’s Square so homeless people would have a place to bathe. Francis has also been quietly sneaking out of the Vatican to minister to homeless residents living on the streets…continued”

“Obama didn’t hesitate to endorse LeBron James’s decision last week to wear an “I Can’t Breathe” T-shirt instead of his Cleveland Cavaliers jersey in the team’s Dec. 8 game against the Brooklyn Nets. The protest T-shirts invoke Garner’s dying words to the police officer who put him in a chokehold. “You know, I think LeBron did the right thing,” Obama told PEOPLE two days after that Cavaliers-Nets game.

“We forget the role that Muhammad Ali, Arthur Ashe and Bill Russell played in raising consciousness,” the president continued. “We went through a long stretch there where [with] well-paid athletes the notion was: just be quiet and get your endorsements and don’t make waves,” he also said. “LeBron is an example of a young man who has, in his own way and in a respectful way, tried to say, ‘I’m part of this society, too’ and focus attention.

“I’d like to see more athletes do that,” he added. “Not just around this issue, but around a range of issues.

We’ve got serious problems, and we need serious people, and if you want to talk about character, Bob, you’d better come at me with more than a burning flag and a membership card. If you want to talk about character and American values, fine. Just tell me where and when, and I’ll show up. This is a time for serious people, Bob, and your fifteen minutes are up. Our Badass PBO showed the mofos once again that he is not the one to be messed with. They should have learned that lesson by now. PBO is the man and unlike Sony, he does not let people intimidate him. He made them look like the ineffectual fools that they are without saying a word. I would love to hear the kind of smack that the male reporters are dishing out as they drown their disappointment in a D. C. bar as PBO wings his way home.

Remember when PBO told someone in an interview (can’t remember which) that he was a fourth quarter player. Then today he mentioned that this was the fourth quarter of his presidency and “interesting things happen in the fourth quarter.” That little aside should have sent shivers down the spine of every Republican and DC pundit. This president is not fooling around and he’s going to outmaneuver anyone in his way before the final bell rings in January 2017.

Bobfr, I keep seeing ‘Truth and Reconciliation’ popping up often these days [apart from your tweets 😉 ]. You may have already read this Smartypants post, but if not ………….

Latin America, Torture and the Cold War

I am tempted to use the word “serendipitous” to describe the fact that within a matter of days, the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee released its report on the investigation of the use of torture by the Bush/Cheney administration, Brazil’s National Truth Commission released its report on the activities of its brutal military dictatorship, and President Obama announced the normalization of our relationship with Cuba.

Let me remind you of what Greg Grandin wrote back in 2007 when we were first learning about the extent to which torture had been used in the “global war on terrorism.”

In fact, it was in Latin America that the CIA and U.S. military intelligence agents, working closely with local allies, first helped put into place the unholy trinity of government-sponsored terrorism now on display in Iraq and elsewhere: death squads, disappearances and torture.

Countries all over South and Central America (as well as Africa) have held truth and reconciliation commissions to document the atrocities committed in their countries as they attempted to throw off the weight of colonialism and reach for independence. Throughout that process, we’ve been reminded of the role the United States played as a “silent partner” in those atrocities. Brazil is simply the latest.

I would love to see the list of 51 Bills that POTUS signed yesterday: Frankly I was surprised there were that many when all that was in the press was a handful of them. Actually not just the list but the actual name of them, who were the co-sponsors and a very short non-legal summary of what are the pros/cons of each based on GOP/DEM perspective. The internet is great but it seems there’s opportunity for someone out there to do this on all the bills that are passed. God help us that the DC media would ever think to do this….

Really ? Who pulled the premiere ? Who cancelled all the interviews for the stars of the movie ?

    CNN is covering ONLY this…

    • December 19, 2014 at 8:05 pm

The CEO of Sony should be thanking the president for putting this film front and center, raising its public profile. The movie doesn’t look very good, and it probably wouldn’t have received as much coverage if not for the scandal. I certainly had no plans to watch it – and still don’t. Personally, I’m opposed to lives being put in danger for the sake of this stupid movie (which seems to just be a display of poor judgement…). They just better hope no lives are actually put in danger over this nonsense.

On Fox News, White House correspondent Ed Henry joked that he was “outraged for men everywhere” but then admitted seriously that he was not pleased with the questions the women asked.

“Frankly some of the questions just didn’t press him,” he said. “There’s so much going on right now and… the questions were trailing off. The president was almost like, let me remember what you asked because it was so unmemorable.”
