Once again hoping I do this correctly. This has always been one of my favorite Christmas carols. From a poem by Longfellow written with the Civil War as a backdrop, it reminds us not to give in to despair. This particular version, which I had never seen before, was done and dedicated to Newtown, CT. It is a little different than other versions I have heard and is, to me, particularly haunting. Watch all the way through.

    More pain for Vlad ….

“The presidents of Belarus and Kazakhstan will visit Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko early next week.

On December 19, Belarusian leader Alyaksandr Lukashenka announced his plans to visit Kyiv on December 21.

Lukashenka said he spoke by phone with Poroshenko the previous evening “and based on that conversation I understood that Ukraine’s government, in particular Ukraine’s president, are in no way the obstacles to starting a new round of negotiations in Minsk.”

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev’s press office released a statement on December 19 saying Nazarbaev would visit Ukraine on December 22 for “negotiations with the leadership” in Ukraine.

Kazakstan and Belarus are partners in a customs union with Russia, but Minsk and Astana have been increasingly discontent with the disruptions to their economies being caused by Western sanctions against Russia.”

btw, this is a big deal ….

Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
    His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Remember when ISIL was unstoppable? PBO’s policy couldn’t possibly work? Both Kobane and Shingal were supposed to be easy wins for ISIL. This is a PR disaster for ISIL. Yes, the air strikes have been a major factor, but they are also getting their asses kicked on the ground. Still a long way to go, but , as usual, when the President’s policies show effect, the media is mum.

And the snow is back again. Yeah.

John, if you scroll through my tweets for the past couple of weeks you will find an accounting of the exceptional bravery of the #YPK, #Peshmerga & indigenous inhabitants of #Kobane and #Sinjar and their steady momentum to crush #DAESH. As the Rojava leadership have noted, some day, not in the distant future, #Kobane will rise as the most welcoming, democratic, egalitarian region in the ME.

Chinese papers praise President Barack Obama for normalising ties with Cuba.

The China Daily says that Mr Obama has “displayed praiseworthy statesmanship” by “turning a game of no winner into one where everyone wins”.

The editorial criticises the “American brand of democracy” and describes the sanctions on Cuba as an “anachronistic policy” which has continued because of the “ideological cage” American politicians “have built for themselves”.

“Mr Obama will find almost the entire world behind him, because he is truly opening a ‘new chapter’ in his country’s ties with not only Cuba, but much of Latin America,” the article says.

Describing Mr Obama as “courageous”, a commentary in the overseas edition of the People’s Daily points out that the improved ties with Cuba is an important legacy of the Obama diplomacy.

According to the analysis, Mr Obama’s decision also “shows that the hostility towards the Communist regime was unpopular”.

The article adds that the economic sanctions imposed on Cuba have not only “hurt US enterprises” but also “damaged Washington’s influence in Latin America”.
