Congrats NCLB on #1 🙂 Our President as usual, was in fine form at this townhall. His responses were thoughtful, sensible, and comprehensive. The participants asked great questions – they were there to listen, learn and obtain information about their issue. They were not there to “TELL Obama” or to get their faces on camera. They respected him as he respected them, and they appreciated the exemplary way in which PBO has conducted himself.

She looks like my grandmother. It always amazes and delights me to see how so many people, from the very young to the most elderly, just clinging to him. There is just something about him, maybe it’s empathy or just plain goodness that so many people see in him and what to hold on to for awhile. He and Michelle are so real and so themselves. I just love them.

From Linda on last thread re: Richard Engel spouting CIA/RW talking point of the day. “POTUS is killing people with drones.”
Yes, that is the Corporate cultures response to a horrific report that shames us all.
    Moral equivalence.
If you turn on media tonight you will hear them all echo how our drone program is terrible.

    Richard Engel turns my stomach.

Yes, exactly Sue. RWmedia don’t even try to make sense. They just want to try to smear PBO and divert shame and blame from themselves.

I cannot stand Richard Engel’s sorry ass. But here’s the thing. How is it a no name journalist most of us have never heard of loses his life while Richard whose face and spew are everywhere manages to keep his head. It is a mystery.

    • December 9, 2014 at 10:53 pm

Nice way for Engel to try “both sides”.

Of course it’s a steaming load of BS, but expect to see it come up on “progressive” sites, along with calls for Obama to immediately prosecute Bush and Cheney or else!*

*Of course, it won’t be easy, even with this mountain of evidence. And you can bet your bottom dollar that the GOP and the MSM will fight it tooth and nail, and don’t count on the emoprogs to have the President’s back.

I am totally, totally lost and too weary to actually educate myself by reading all of today’s previous posts. Came in near the bottom of the ‘PBO holding a town hall’ post, read a couple of comments and realizing quickly I was so far out of the loop almost sat down and wept. This is one day I’m going to move forward and (TRY to) forget what passed before.

    O, congrats, NCLB!

I watched the Colbert report again and it was just as wonderful the second time. Also i caught some nuance the second time. PBO was doing Steven’s facial expressions as well as mimicing his speech. PBO did a pretty fair job of the raised eyebrow thing Steven does.

      December 9, 2014 at 7:40 pm

Yup, he nailed it! I just watched it for a third time. The mashup painting of Lincoln and Colbert hanging behind it was classic. For anyone who missed it here’s the link.

I just LOVE Stephen Colbert. I will never forget him trying to cover his emotion when POTUS won in 2008.

Deal reached on massive $1.1 trillion spending bill

Congressional leaders have reached an agreement on a massive $1.1 trillion spending bill that will keep most of the federal government funded through next September.

Months of protracted negotiations between Democratic and Republican leaders concluded on Tuesday night, with passage expected in the coming days, according to top aides.

US News Media is beyond a Joke.

The Media were good about Snowden unlawfully stealing and wickedly releasing Classified Documents. They could not get enough. They didn’t mind that those Documents released some of them aided the very people this TORTURE Documents were going after.

The Media were happy to get the Pentagon Papers. Their Go to Guy…….McCain…..spoke out against Torture.

But the MSM’s continued complicity and their endless duplicity in protecting GW Bush and Cheney is unprecedented.

I was listening/watching Rev Al and left MSNBC on with CM on Hardball. I usually turn his show off. He came off to me as being on the GOP side about torture. Michael Steele seems to know how to use the “we” statement referring to both of them being Catholic getting Chris on his side. Joan Walsh was a bulldog and right on! The question does torture work is being used to whitewash it and defend it. I remember two wrongs don’t make a right.

    GE TODville,

    Here’s some updates about CIA/torture:

  25. 63 FoxfireTX
    December 9, 2014 at 7:42 pm

I had to change the channel from MSNBC given Richard Engel’s unfailing attempt to indict PBO for the drone program rather than GWB for torture. What a fucking idiot. But it also caused me to go back to Jim Wright’s article at Stonekettle about the drone program after Anwar al-Awlaki was killed. There are some very relevant points including this, given we are at war with AQ:

“Targeted killing. I have never understood the moral objection to this. Oh don’t get me wrong, sure it’s immoral. So what? Killing is killing, you can gussy it up all you like, it’s still killing and it’s all immoral. That’s the way it is, you’re just arguing over semantics. If you’re on the receiving end, it doesn’t make one good goddamned bit of difference if death finds you from some random bit of shrapnel or if the bullet has your name written on it. Dead’s dead. Trust me on this, I’ve been there. After a decade of war, so have a hell of a lot of us. Killing people on the battlefield, zapping them in the electric chair, putting poison into their veins, or dropping hellfire on them from the sky – it’s all killing. Morality has got not one damned thing to do with it. Frankly I fail to understand how it was more moral or honorable or even economical to let thousands of people die during the revolution in Libya, for example, than to just drop a Tomahawk on Khaddafi on day one. Bang! There, the asshole’s dead. Toss his body over the balcony railing and let the mob use it for a piñata, we brought sticks, no pushing there’s enough for everybody. War’s over. Long live the Arab Spring and don’t forget who your friends are.

    ….

Bottom line, they could have surrendered. They could have surrendered at anytime, right up until 9:55AM last Friday morning. Even then, they could have faced the Predators, threw down arms and raised their hands and claimed their rights as citizens of the United States of America.

    They didn’t.

    They chose to die.

They chose to die as martyrs to a cause hostile to their own country. They welcomed it.

They chose to die as terrorists, not as Americans.

They made their choice, let them suffer the consequences.”
    http://www.stonekettle.com/2011/10/consequences.html

Bottom line, when you choose to fight a war people get killed. That fact does NOT justify–nor is it equivalent to–torturing the people in your custody. Every civilized nation recognizes this distinction. And I’d much rather have these terrorists killed by drones than see our troops put in harm’s way to stop them. Wish someone would tell Engel to STFU!

Still laughing at a cranky email from a TOD lurker who complained about the profanity in some of the tweets we post, especially from the Tweet of God (“who is NOT funny”), and that we were insulting the President by posting them. And that me and Nerdy should show more respect considering how much money we’re making from TOD 😆

    Nerdy? Apparently we’re RICH!1!1!

Fuck me. (That’s for the cranky lurker. Eat me, asswipe.)

Just got an email from the missus. Her dad may be having surgery tonight. His wound got infected and now his hand/arm are swollen.

I”m just gutted, not only for him, but for me and the missus. I don’t know when she’ll be home now.

Aren’t Moms great? My Mom drives me nuts at times, however, I feel so Blessed to still have her mentally in her right mind, physically sound for her age, and able to still live independently… I’m especially grateful this year because we’ve lost about 20 folks in my tiny little community. My 2014 social life has consisted of funerals…

  33. December 9, 2014 at 8:32 pm

“All of this is to say that – if we are serious about wanting to “expose the CIA’s dark side” – we have to take a long view backwards. What the Bush/Cheney administration did was despicable. But it didn’t spring up out of whole cloth during their 8 years in office.”

  34. December 9, 2014 at 8:33 pm

I read the torture reports, more skimmed. I don’t know if I have it in myself to read the evils that Bush and Cheney brought to this country. It’s painful to know such is allowed to flourish like it was by a corrupt media and congress. The president did the right thing on much of this.
