Oh, me too, Pf. It would make it so much easier to work the polls on election day and help our candidates if we could vote early. Plus think of how convenient it would be for working families if they could vote on the weekend. If Wolf gets elected, I hope this is on his agenda. Pa is just too backward when it comes to voting. Also there is no earthly reason why we have to register to vote a month early. That’s a holdover from another time when there were no computers.

UN elects five new members to the Security Council [and Turkey wasn’t one]

Venezuela, Malaysia, Angola and New Zealand won seats on the United Nations Security Council on Thursday for two years from Jan. 1, 2015, while Spain beat Turkey in a third round of run-off voting.

The 193-member U.N. General Assembly elected Venezuela with 181 votes, Malaysia with 187 votes, Angola with 190 votes.

All three countries campaigned unopposed for their seats after being chosen as the candidates for their respective regional groups, but still needed to win the votes of two-thirds of the General Assembly to secure their spots.

The only contest was between New Zealand, Spain and Turkey for two seats given to the Western European and others group. New Zealand won a seat during the first round of voting with 145 votes. Run-off voting was taking place to decide the final spot.

“If the black vote does not come out in big numbers in the age of Ferguson and voter ID, it will empower our adversaries and enhance our marginalization. We cannot be distracted by professional anarchists on the left or cynics on the right who would deter us from channeling our justified outrage and anger into concrete measures for progress and change. Despite voter-suppression tactics in 2012, black voters outvoted whites, percentage-wise; let’s do that once again.”

I’m so tired, tired, tired of these “professional anarchists” as Rev Al so aptly put it. It’s the same all over the world. The far left is either secretly working for the right, or they are so incredibly self-involved, self-serving or just plain stupid, they end up unknowingly working for the corporate establishment anyway.

As I’ve said before, no one in Occupy got me affordable healthcare; Tavis Smiley didn’t lift a finger and neither did Noam Chomsky! PBO, Nancy Pelosi and a lot of hard-working volunteers did that!

I saw an article last week (think it might have been @nytimes) which said that Presby was considered the gold standard for TX hospitals.

      Is that true?

Commenters at TOD had a different view, TOD locals said it didn’t have a good reputation before this incident.

      I wonder which is correct.

      • 149 57andfemale
        October 20, 2014 at 4:57 pm

Not what I’ve heard, but I can’t confirm. A woman called in to Stephanie Miller and said it was a lousy hospital – bottom line oriented, not very organized. She said if she was in a car accident and Presby was the closest hospital, she’d ask to be taken to another hospital.

Now, there is no way to confirm a call-in, but this woman sounded rational and sincere. She knew a lot about the area. She had been a census taker in the apartment complex where Duncan was visiting, and she said it was full of low-income people who most likely were in the ACA/Medicare gap because of heartless Repubs. She called right when the story broke – she wondered about the people if there was serious exposure in that complex – the majority of them had no access to health care and how that would impact public health.

A few years ago the son of a friend of mine, college student, went to Dallas Presby ER with really high fever, a stiff neck & other symptoms. They told him he had a bad case of flu & sent him home with Tylenol. Within 48 hours later he was admitted to another hospital with acute meningitis. He dang near died. That’s all I have to say about ‘for profit’ Dallas Presby hospital. You can reach your own conclusions. I think they totally fIgged up Mr Duncan’s care because he was a black man from another country & they thought he could not pay for treatment. They wanted him out of their ER! Too bad for him that the ambulance brought him back because hospital & staff Had no protocol for care. They dropped the ball! His death is on them. I sure hope those two nurses recover & that no more of their staff or patients get sick with ebola.

            October 20, 2014 at 6:06 pm

Well, that supports what I heard in the call to Stephanie Miller. The woman said she delivered her third child there, and it took 7 months to get rid of the infection. Now, I know there are problems in all hospitals with infection, but still.

Something, by the way, that ACA is addressing and improving.
