A federal judge’s decision on Thursday to strike down Texas’s strict voter identification law is a boost for the Obama administration’s effort to once again require the Lone Star State to receive federal pre-approval before making any changes to its voting laws. “The Court holds that SB 14 creates an unconstitutional burden on the right to vote, has an impermissible discriminatory effect against Hispanics and African-Americans, and was imposed with an unconstitutional discriminatory purpose. The Court further holds that SB 14 constitutes an unconstitutional poll tax,” Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos, an appointee of President Barack Obama, wrote in a 147-page opinion.

The finding of a “discriminatory purpose” could end up being the Justice Department’s ticket to victory in this high-profile clash with Texas that stands to impact future elections. “I think this is quite important, actually. I think the DOJ has the ammunition to bring Texas back under the preclearance requirement,” said Bertrall Ross, a professor at UC Berkeley School of Law. “But it all depends in terms of whether this decision is upheld on appeal — whether the 5th Circuit [and possibly the Supreme Court] issue a similar finding with respect to discriminatory purpose.”

Just went to the Bank to take care of some company business and they had Fox playing on their TV. I politely asked them to change the station and reminded them of the multi-million portfolio the company I work for has with them. It was changed lickity split to CNN. I teased the manager and told her that I might make a surprised visit just to see if they changed it back. She gave me her word that they wouldn’t 🙂

I see that OK is almost totally Republican and has been for ages. There are two members in my art guild that were born and raised in OK. They listen to Rush, FOX and spout all the racist nonsense you would think no one would ever believe. I remember after the 2009 Inauguration one of them talked about the Muslim taking the oath on the Koran. I piped up having been at the Inauguration that it was not the Koran, but was Lincoln’s Bible. This person did not believe me and said how would I know that? I said I had Tivoed the Inauguration on two different stations and watched it after returning home. The announcers on both stations spoke about it. Just think of the nonsense the FOX audience believes! We have had to agree not to talk politics in our weekly meeting.
A week ago I met a couple from OK in a nice Coastal restaurant. He was a lawyer that had come to scatter ashes here on request from a client. He made some negative comment about our President that I objected to. His wife said they were both very conservative. She said maybe he could convert me. I said they may not like to know I was a big supporter that helped get the President elected. He shook his head and we agreed to not talk politics. I think Oklahomans must be brainwashed.

Well that headline raised an eyebrow.
Here’s some detail from the article for context:

” Vice President Joe Biden, in a closed-door meeting with black clergy in South Carolina Tuesday, referred to himself as “the only white boy on the east side of Wilmington” as he recalled his days as a Delaware public defender, and pressed faith leaders to elect Democrats this year.
He offered a candid critique of Republicans, calling the tea party “crazy,” according to a detailed readout of Biden’s remarks provided to CNN by a person in the room.
“This is not your father’s Republican Party,” he said, according to the source. “This is a different breed of cat, man. I am not making a moral judgment, but I will tell you that they have no judgment.”

I just got this email from Gov Quinn. Hope he does well!

    Friend,

The second debate starts in just a few minutes, and I’ll be honest — I’m really looking forward to it.

These debates are a chance to make my case directly to the people, and my opponent can no longer hide behind fancy ads or big checks.

But when I’m up on that stage, I never forget about all the supporters out there who are counting on me — and who have helped get me this far.

After all, we’re in this together.

The debate starts in just a few minutes.

    Wish me luck,

    Governor Quinn

For the life of me I do NOT understand why these m/billionaires are willing to pay so much and are so eager to get into politics. Part of me knows it’s because they want to manipulate laws and public funds to their own benefits, but when do their needs stop motivating them? How much money does any one person or family needs? You can’t sleep in more than one bed or home at any given time or drive more than one car at a time. Okay, so you can look at more than one piece of expensive art, but give me a break!

Does anyone know if any of these super rich types ever asked for their wealth to be buried with them, and did their relatives acquiesce?

  31. October 14, 2014 at 7:28 pm

I really like Michael McDonald for election news reporting.

He explains why pollsters aren’t accurate regarding Democrats.

….With so much early voting activity over 2010 in the key Senate battlegrounds, perhaps the most prudent assessment is that turnout will be high in these states with competitive races. My comments to The Hill contradict their story’s title, “Turnout Fears Mount for Dems” — in states with competitive top of the ticket races, turnout appears to be robust. Lower interest among Democrats nationally is likely due to the fact that the largest Democratic states of California and New York don’t have Senate elections, nor particularly competitive governors elections, to pique voters’ interest.

Early voting may be changing pollsters’ perceptions about the shape of the electorate. The Des Moines Register implies that Democrats’ early voter mobilization has been a key to Braley’s (D) narrowing of Ernst’s (R) lead in their most recent poll…..

Sometimes I foolishly listen in to five minutes of certain “news reader” shows. Did the same with Chris Hayes’ Broadway play tonight. Within those same five minutes, I heard him refer – from his script – to Krugman in Rolling Stone as “coming to the defense of President Obama.” Guess what, Hayes … NOBODY needs to DEFEND President Obama’s achievements. NOBODY. Argghhh.

I almost wrote that myself, vc, so we’re on the same track. His brother committed suicide, which understandably had an effect on him. I’m not going to pretend I know how the psychological effect of that has influenced some of his decisions today, but volunteer “canary in a coal mine” comes into my thought processes, too. I can’t tell the last time I’ve seen him with my own eyes, but my memory of him is that he looked sad and did sad stories, and he does always seem to be running towards potentially dangerous situations. I don’t know where the thought came from other than these days when I hear his name, he’s somewhere in the middle of some ruckus or other. Does he have anyone close who could initiate that chat, do you think?

I get where the graphic is coming from, and what it’s pointing to, but must everything be a competition in a competitive world? This is why we can never just take a day to celebrate an act that will benefit humanity, and feel good about it. (It’s reminding me of what the green-eyed monsters do to President Obama.) Tomorrow, if it hasn’t already started, they’ll get on with “he did it for PR reasons” or “he hates China, Canada and France, so … ”

^^^ I think that made me sound like a cranky ol’ lady, eh? (Ha. Who cares. At least I only compete with myself.)
