“What Are You Prepared To Do?”

by Japa

Four weeks from today we will all be here doing an election post-mortem and analyzing the results.

We may be ecstatic, mildly happy, disappointed or devastated. Personally, I will reject the last one.

To be devastated is to give up, and I won’t do that. That would be a betrayal of our President. I will do everything possible to support him as he has to deal with even more opposition than he has had to date.

But, obviously, I am hoping for results that will not result in even the temptation to feel devastated. And achieving those results means not expecting others to carry the burden.

I wrote a while ago about how I always used to feel that as long as I cast my vote I had done my duty. 2010 woke me up a little when Joe Walsh won my Congressional district. At the time, I initially blamed the incumbent Congresswoman for being complacent and not recognizing that she needed to do more campaigning. And I blamed lazy Dems for not getting out to vote.

Since then, I realize I was also complicit in that defeat. I sat around, comfortable in my knowledge that no one would vote for idiot Walsh. I didn’t contribute time or money. I didn’t try to even get a sense of whether or not Walsh had a chance. I was as complacent and lazy as all those others I was complaining about.

Not taking time to vote is not the only way to be lazy. Finding the time to vote but doing nothing else is also lazy.

I swore I would never be that kind of lazy again.

In 2012 I did a little bit more, although I was still under the illusion that, since I knew Duckworth would win easily and that PBO would take the state easily, I didn’t have to do a lot. I contributed, did a little phone banking and convinced myself I was a super person.

That brings me to 2014.

We all can do something to make a difference. Some can do a little, some can do a lot.

I still live in a blue state and I know Duckworth will win easily. But the governor’s race is tight and if Rauner wins, he will make Scott Walker look like a Boy Scout. And my state representative is in a battle with a lot of Koch money going to defeat him. So I will donate, I will do some canvassing. On election day, I am taking the day off work to volunteer to drive people to the polls.

On our local progressive radio station there is a guy who runs a mortgage service. He makes it obvious that he is an unabashed progressive and that it is important that the GOP loses. He finishes all his commercials with the phrase “What are you prepared to do?”

That is a question we should keep asking ourselves right up to and through November 4.

I’m sorry he has died. He made so many lapses in good judgement from the very beginning…before leaving the Continent and coming to America.

I remember reading a comment on Daily Banter where someone said Obama is the “but what about this” President. He will never get credit from the majority of Americans because the media is in the back pocket of the GOP, and the majority will never give credit to a minority especially a black man.

This is so wonderful!!! “Whose side are you on?” is the big question for 2014.
John Lewis and Elzabeth Warren have been posing this very clear choice and I think this message will prevail and lead the democrats to victory.
Thank you, Chips fpr posting this.

If you’re a moron and a RWNJ, you get a TV show. Insane.

And I’m listening to my public union-member nephew tell me what a failure PBO is, and he’s going to vote for Rauner here in IL who has made it his mission to destroy all unions.

He gets his news from Fox, “Tea Party Patriots” and some other RWNJ site. Because, you know, teh blacks and all them brown people are taking away the jobs.

I’m exhausted. I’ve been trying to win hearts and minds one person at a time and I am just drained.

        • 82 0388jojothecat
          October 8, 2014 at 2:24 pm

Ask you nephew if he plans to quit his job and get a “real” job in private industry where there are NO unions, NO protections, and NO protected pensions?

          • 83 57andfemale
            October 8, 2014 at 2:30 pm

I have. What upsets me is that he used to be more open. He would at least listen. This RW media has turned brains to mush and hearts to stone. When I talk to him about ACA and how it has safe his aunt’s life, he’ll carry on about the “rate increases” and now he has to pay for the “deadbeat 26 year olds” and all those pesky improved benefits. This, from the guy whose sister, mother and grandmother all lived on welfare.

I honestly don’t know what to do. I’ve been engaging people for weeks and at this moment, it seems hopeless. I’ll get my hope back, to be sure. Right now I’m just weary of it all.

            • 84 0388jojothecat
              October 8, 2014 at 2:51 pm

Sorry you have a nephew who is so cynical, uncaring of others, and bitter. Know that you can’t get through to him right now and maybe never. When he complains to you about rate increases, let him know rate increases happened before ACA and will increases after ACA because the cost of stuff goes up. I don’t know how old he is but I tell people that the price of “X” was “X” back in 1968 do really expect it to be the same price in 2014? If you do then you should be paid the same salary in (whatever year he started working) in 2014 because if prices can’t go up neither should your salary. I have a brother who blames everything wrong on PBO or the Democrats, I just ask him what have the Republicans done that is so great because I can name a lot things the Democrats have done that is good that the Republicans want to take away.

There are some you will never be able to convince, but if you don’t engage you will not be able to influence anyone. Even if you can get 1 or 2 to reconsider you will have done a great thing.

              • 87 57andfemale
                October 8, 2014 at 4:00 pm

Oh, I have no intention of stopping. I’m just having one of those days and I needed to vent. When he started posting stuff from the “Tea Party Patriots” I wanted to cry.

I sometimes forget how fortunate I am this his uncle, Mr. 57, was able to extricate himself from the Chicago southside mindset, with a paltry education. He still reverts sometimes, but I am immensely proud of how far he has come.

And I was able to convince my niece to back off getting a gun. Most important – I listened to her. I accepted her “fears” with my mind always on keeping the conversation going. It wasn’t easy, and there are many nut jobs (like Mr. 57’s twin brother) who cannot be engaged or reasoned with.

We keep plugging away. We cannot sit in our comfortable bubble and think this is the world. Conservatives set out to remake discourse 35 years ago. We have a lot of work to do to undo that damage.

I understand 57andfemale. It’s not easy trying to educate those that get their information from Fox, but if you reach one person, count that as a victory. That one person will then pass their knowledge on.

According to sources, Leno had been courted by several networks but chose to remain loyal to the NBC Universal family. The comedian will reportedly host a show about cars (which isn’t totally surprising), on the corporation’s business network (which is also not surprising, seeing as he already hosted a car-based Labor Day special on CNBC).

The show, which would reportedly be a regular series, currently has no premiere date locked down.

This would be the second time Leno has un-retired from hosting television talk shows on NBC.

A man allegedly opened fire on a Detroit mother and her family members on Saturday, killing her after she refused to give the man her number.

“What was on your mind that you could be so evil, because she said no to you?” the victim’s aunt said to WJBK.

Twenty-seven year old Mary “Unique” Spears was attending a family event following the funeral of a relative when a stranger reportedly approached her inside the venue, asking for her name and phone number.

“I have a man, I can’t talk to you,” she told the stranger, according to Spears’ aunt.

Spears continued to fend off advances until around 2 a.m., when the family began to leave the event. The stranger then allegedly approached the woman one final time, and soon a scuffle broke out between the man and Spears’ fiancée.

“There’s no greater fighter for the middle class than Joe Biden … So I am grateful and honored to be joined here in Florida by Vice President Joe Biden and his incredible wife, Jill … Joe likes to quote his dad a lot — a smart guy who said, ‘Don’t tell me what you value. Show me your budget, and I’ll tell you what you value.’ That’s a quote I think about a lot. When you look at Florida’s budget under Rick Scott, you can see plain and simple what he cares about: Tax breaks for the wealthy corporations and special interests — while cutting spending for our schools … I’m glad to have Joe and Jill here in Florida with me to talk about why this election matters.”

Did PBO pinch Tweety recently, or what? Hurt his fee-fees in some way? Because he has gone off his rocker, in complete anti-Obama hysteria mode. Now ebola is Obama’s fault. And PBO said that an outbreak in the U.S. was unlikely, which is true, not that there could not be individual cases here and there. But facts/shmacts—-when you’re breathlessly spitting anti-Obama nonsense——and FOX type fear mongering.

You may have already discussed (I haven’t caught up yet) that Walmart isn’t offering employer health insurance to part time workers and here in NC, that will be a problem as Medicaid expansion ain’t here (yet). There’s been talk because hospitals are pushing back, so this election matters immensely.

No need to click, but these stats made me insane:

“I love to say “if we turn out, we win,” and for good reason—because it’s true. And there’s no better example of this than Georgia. Red state, right? President Barack Obama lost it in 2012 by 300,000 votes, a 53-45 percent margin.
Yet there are an estimated 6-700,000 unregistered African Americans in metro Atlanta alone, not to mention young voters, Latinos (now nine percent of the state), single women, and every other ill-performing base Democratic demographic throughout the entire state. In other words, if all our potential supporters were registered to vote and voted, Georgia would be a safe Blue state.”
