In addition to the content of the speech, I totally and completely ❤ ❤ his manner/delivery. He was TALKING to us – very straightforward, very factual,….very 'in-your-face' rethugs and media, but with class. No screeching, yelling, pretend emotion! I particularly ❤ class, Idon! You can get the best out of me if you give me the facts with 'class'. 😀 😀

Shit’s about to get real. Turks are ferocious fighters and should not be confused with any others in the region.

The Turkish parliament today voted 298-98 to authorize military force against ISIS fighters in Syria and Iraq.

Turkey, a NATO member, had declined to join a U.S.-led coalition, offering only tacit support to some 40 nations that make up the group going after ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

But that changed in recent days, with ISIS on its doorstep, tens of thousands fleeing across its border and reports that the tomb of the grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman Empire has been surrounded.

Plus, they got all those hostages away from ISIS, possibly by promising not to participate. But once they got home, screw any promises.

      • October 2, 2014 at 2:35 pm

You don’t honor promises extorted at the barrel of a gun, or the edge of a sword.

        October 2, 2014 at 2:38 pm

Yup. ISIL is in for a big surprise. We sure as hell don’t need our “boots” on the ground now.

        • 36 japa21
          October 2, 2014 at 2:55 pm

Nope. That is ISIL’s biggest wish, that we would go in all hot and heavy. That wish is not going to be granted. And if they think beheading 3 female peshmerga soldiers is going to demoralize the Kurds, they have another think coming. It will take a while to get them down to virtually harmless level, but it may happen quicker than many people think.

When they seemed unstoppable, it was easy for them to get recruits. Now that they are looking more and more vulnerable, and getting their asses whipped by other Muslims, I think they are going to see the recruiting pipeline dry up to a great degree.

The Turks are going in…Hooray! I’ve mentioned before that my husband served with Turkish forces in Korea. He said they were the fiercest, no-fear fighters he had ever seen. Their pilots would take off and land in any weather, and their soldiers were incredibly tough. So…..ISIL will have met more than its match.

Now, imagine is a Dem nominated Justice said that to favor Non-Christians.

        Scalia calls himself, a Constitutionalist?

I don’t remember a Roman Catholic imposing his Church’s doctrine as the Constitution was drafted, written and adopted. Heck, only JFK was the 1st Roman Catholic. And of the 109 Justices in our History, only 9 have been Roman Catholics. Today, there are 6 of the 9 serving in 238 yrs.

          October 2, 2014 at 2:58 pm

I will tell you right now, most Catholics want nothing to do with the likes of Scalia. It was interesting when my parish’s music director was fired because he put on facebook he was engaged to his long time partner. Some of our Chicago folks have undoubtedly heard about this.

This lit up a firestorm in our parish and it wasn’t in favor of the decision to fire him. A lot of people have left the parish and my wife and I are looking at other churches in the area and making our own decision about it.

          • 59 Nena20409
            October 2, 2014 at 3:01 pm

Yep. He is an ideologue with a partisan bent, period.

          • 60 57andfemale
            October 2, 2014 at 3:15 pm

That was your parish? Oh my!

People do need to leave their parishes in order for the Church to become relevant to 21st century Catholics. Unfortunately, my Catholic woman friends – who believe in marriage equality, equal rights for women, birth control, choice, etc. – espouse these beliefs everywhere but in the Church. They all tell me how they want to get up and walk out. Then get up and walk out! Doctrine that was essentially political and established to overcome mortality rates, put workers in the fields and soldiers in the armies, is no longer relevant in a modern world.

As the late, great comparative religion professor Joseph Campbell said, “Religion that does not accept what we now know to be true becomes a perversion.” When we didn’t know how the sun and stars moved in the heavens, it was reasonable to see chariots in the sky. It is now enlightened to strive for a world where every child born is wanted and can be supported physically, intellectually, and spiritually – making access to birth control a superior moral choice.

            October 2, 2014 at 3:45 pm

As a Catholic, I totally agree, japa. Scalia doesn’t speak for me.

        • 62 57andfemale
          October 2, 2014 at 2:59 pm

As the granddaughter of Jewish immigrants who came through Ellis Island in the early 1900’s, let me say that the vast majority of immigrants would never have come to America if they thought Christianity would trump their religious rights and personal beliefs. You negate the entire reason for America. This is not a new “fad” – this is raison d’etre of this great nation.

          • 63 57andfemale
            October 2, 2014 at 3:18 pm

I wasn’t exactly accurate: the majority of immigrants were Christian; but Scalia is still delusionally wrong: he negates the meaning of the First Amendment to suit his bias.

          October 2, 2014 at 3:00 pm

I see history as being very kind to this one in a million PERSON, not just president, but PERSON. He is everything. And I could watch him and listen to him speak from this minute till my dying day, and I would be happy. Truth.

    • October 2, 2014 at 3:44 pm

“You are a Once in a Generation president.”

You are soooooooooo right, dotster. It’s like he was placed in the right place at the right time. Someone who could handle the complexities of the world. Someone who could endure the criticism, name-calling, and defamation. Someone who could outmaneuver the deliberate obstruction and not give in to those whose sole purpose is to defeat him and crush his spirit. Someone who could maintain their strength of character and hold on to his values. Someone who has brought hope back to the masses; who has inspired us and helped us to see that *we* are the change that we need.

So sad that the couple would sue because they did not get a white baby and no matter what reason they claim her race us the reason. They claim to know prejudice from being gay well there is no difference in how a person feels when you face prejudice whether its the color of your skin, eyes, hair, or having two mommies or daddies. When people say hurtful things it hurts. There’s no difference in feeling hurt due to racial prejudice vs. homophobic prejudice.

She is suing for the money. This is the stupidest story. The adorable little girl is 2 yrs. old, they admit both love her. Town leaders say she is welcome there, that no one is mistreating a 2 yr. old, that there are many other racially diverse children living in the community, no one is hitting them, mixed race families are a pretty common sight everywhere, not shocking. Geez. This is the dumbest lawsuit ever.

After this week full of negativity from the media, this speech was right on time. It was the pick-me-up that we [at least *I* ] needed. It was a reminder that there is a reason we continue to hope; that change is indeed happening, be it at a slower pace than we would like. And the President gave us the blueprint to continue our forward movement.

Our President and Vice President and some other elected Democrats remain the voices of hope in our country, in the political sphere. On the converse, so many are wallowing in their own stupidity and are allowing themselves and their families NO forward movement.

The way they roll on the Southside of Chicago!
    .
    Subject: The Nightstick

    Nightstick

Only a true Chicagoan or former Chicagoan could appreciate this:

Two men were driving through Chicago when they got pulled over by a cop. The cop walks up and taps his nightstick on the window. The driver rolls down the window and “WHACK,” the cop smacks him in the head with his nightstick.

“What the hell was that for?” the driver asked.

“You’re in Chicago, son,” the cop answered. “When we pull you over in Chicago, you better have your license ready by the time we get to your car.”

“I’m sorry, officer,” the driver said, “I’m not from around here.”

The cop runs a check on the guy’s license–he’s clean and gives the guy his license back. The cop then walks around to the passenger side and taps on the window. The passenger rolls down the window and “WHACK,” the cop smacks him on the head with the nightstick.

“What the hell did you do that for?” the passenger demands. “Just making your wish come true,” replied the cop

“Making WHAT wish come true?” the passenger asked.

“Because I know your type,” the cop says, “two miles down the road you’re gonna turn to your buddy and say, ‘I wish that asshole would’ve tried that shit with me!’
