63% Drop In Uninsured Oregonians?! Thanks ObamaCare

OHSU: OHSU Study Shows 63 Percent Drop In Uninsured Oregonians

A study released today shows that the number of uninsured Oregonians fell by 63 percent from June 30, 2013 to June 30, 2014. “This first glance at Oregon’s uninsured rates shows that a significant number of Oregonians have benefited from expansions in access to health insurance,” said Peter Graven, Ph.D., health economist with the Center for Health Systems Effectiveness at OHSU and lead author on the study. “Our study found that 95 percent of Oregonians now have health insurance coverage”  the study’s key objective was to estimate the number of uninsured individuals in Oregon as a result of policy changes associated with the Affordable Care Act. The number of uninsured Oregonians in June 2013 was estimated to be approximately 550,000, or 14 percent of the total population. The study found that the number of uninsured individuals in Oregon declined to roughly 202,000 in June 2014, or 5.1 percent of the population.

“Since the beginning of the year, nearly all of the previously uninsured patients we care for at Richmond Clinic have gained health insurance coverage,” said Christina Milano, M.D., assistant professor of family medicine in the OHSU School of Medicine and family medicine physician at the OHSU Richmond Clinic in Southeast Portland. “This makes a huge difference for these patients who previously had to pay out of pocket or work out other payment agreements; it’s a big weight off their shoulders. There’s also a peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re covered if you have a critical illness in the future.” Medicaid eligibility extensions and expanded access to individual health plans through Cover Oregon, Oregon’s health insurance marketplace, drove the substantial increase in the number of insured Oregonians. Most of the newly insured are enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan, Oregon’s Medicaid program, which saw an increase of more than 360,000, or 59 percent. Participation in private non-group health plans saw a 20 percent increase in participation, primarily through Cover Oregon.

OPB: Number Of Uninsured Oregonians Falls By 63 Percent

The number of Oregonians without health insurance dropped 63 percent in a year, according to a new study by Oregon Health and Science University. In the summer of 2013, more than half a million Oregonians didn’t have health insurance. By this summer — after the state expanded Medicaid and after people were allowed to enroll under the Affordable Care Act — that number dropped to just over 200,000. So in effect, the number of uninsured Oregonians went from 14 percent of the population to five percent.

NW, thanks for highlighting this improvement in people’s lives in my state. So many others could be sharing this good news if their knee-jerk negative GOP Governors actually cared about them and were willing to expand Medicaid according the the ACA guidelines. People in these red states should be demonstrating in the streets instead of being crashed out on the couch with Fox or Rush brainwashing them.

It’s not mind-boggling, LL, some people are just comfortable with someone else’s foot up their ass. How else to explain the south repeatedly voting in the same people that continue to skull-fuck them?

      • September 26, 2014 at 2:59 pm

Yeah, it’s the “Please sir, may I have another” mindset.

      • September 26, 2014 at 3:45 pm

It’s an “I’m too lazy to do anything about my misery” mentality. Too lazy to get informed. To lazy to even listen. Too lazy to go vote. It takes less effort to whine and complain and blame someone else for our situation.

        September 26, 2014 at 9:20 pm

God, gays, and guns go a long way in some parts of this country. Throw abortion into the mix and you have an ideological stranglehold that is almost impossible to penetrate. Some people are starting to figure out that they are indeed being skull-fucked and who the skull-fuckers are, but it could take a while for that trickle to become a torrent, if it ever does happen.

I read about a county in Kentucky (please, Ms. Lundergan-Grimes, do not allow that odious McConnell to win) in which over 95 percent of the population is on food stamps and the same percentage votes GOP.

“Please, sir, may I have another,” indeed! People just won’t see what they don’t want to see.

Can someone please tell me why aren’t the Dems leading in every poll under the sun? I mean really, every time I turn around some state that signed up for the ACA has around a fifty percent drop in the number of previously uninsured citizens. Are we this jaded, can’t we see that our families friends and neighbors are finally getting insured, doesn’t that mean something? Millions and millions of people are being thrown a lifeline for the first time in their lives.

        September 26, 2014 at 5:53 pm

Don, I understand why you are puzzled. The problem is the polls are BS. They are only going to broadcast the results that show the President and Dems in trouble. People do like what’s in the policy, but they hate President Obama, because he’s black, therefore they will never admit to liking it. Unfortunately, there are too many people that will suffer as a result.

    • September 26, 2014 at 3:36 pm

Don, we know how slanted polls can be, and how devious the news reports are. It could be Dems ARE doing better than they want us to believe. For the sake of demoralizing the thinkers. Keep you the Heart, sir! ❤

The discussions that have nothing to do with getting Dems elected is a waste of time. The lady that comes on after Thom Hartmann was talking about “salutegate”. No wonder people are disengaged in voting and do not want anything to do with politics.

TME, the whole story of the impact of the ACA should be featured in every news broadcast and highlighted in tv specials. That’s what would happen in a fair world, with a decent media. These are big historic changes that are going on and very few people know about them.

I have to share this email I just sent my manager.

N is one of our regular computer users. She’s the slight pale woman with long dark hair who uses the filtered computer a lot. If you saw her you’d know who she is.

She came up to me on Tuesday to tell me that L [another regular] has been harassing her. Somehow he’s gotten it into his head that she owes him $15K because apparently he gave her Charlie Sheen’s home address. (No, I’m not making this up.) N’s friend is a screenwriter, and she gave him the address. Now L wants a cut of the gazillions they’re going to make. From what N tells me (and I have not corroborated this), L will start loudly asking her “Where’s my 15 thousand?” while in the library.

At the time she told me, she didn’t want me to kick him out because she felt sorry for him. I did tell her if the harassment continued we would probably ask him to leave.

Life in a public library, folks.

  33. September 26, 2014 at 4:59 pm

Wow, NW! Thanks for headlining my link on health care enrollment in Oregon. You know, the media jackals have done nothing but focus on the technical failings of Oracle in Oregon. Hardly a word about the fact that hundreds of thousands of uninsured now have essential medical care. That study by Oregon Health Sciences University is authoritative, 95% coverage. I have volunteered my Monday afternoons now for several months enrolling mental health patients at the Psychiatric Crisis Center in Salem, Oregon. The looks and grateful tears from many who have gone without medication, without treatment for diabetes, kidney failure, and other serious health problems is so moving. Before this process about 50% of PCC clients had zero coverage at all. It’s satisfying to be a part of that process in my small way. However, my volunteer duties are going to change in a few months. My daughter is now pregnant with twins!! And she and my son-in-law already have a four year old we are doing day car for 3 days a week. So in a few months I will literally be up to my elbows in diapers, feedings, burping , rocking, plus the energy of the four year old.Our next car is a mini-van instead of a compact, which we are buying next week. Twins are definitely a game-changer! My daughter is an oncology nurse and needs to be working at least part time. My son-in-law is self-employed so they rely on her health insurance for their family coverage. So my wife and I in our retirement get to do our part to help out this young family.

“Fired Oklahoma Food Plant Employee Beheads Woman, Attacks Another”

A man beheaded one woman and stabbed another at an Oklahoma food processing plant from which he had just been fired, authorities said.

Alton Nolen was reportedly fired from Vaughan Foods in Moore, Okla., Thursday afternoon and drove directly from the human resources office to another building in the facility and attacked two women in the front office, police said.

The FBI is now involved in the case and were called in by the local police “due to the manner of death and the initial statements of co-workers,” according to the Moore Police Department.

“After conducting interviews with Nolen’s co-workers, information was obtained that he recently started trying to convert several employees to the Muslim religion,” police said in a statement.

I try to be like Ann Frank who still believed, in the midst of The Holocaust, that most people are good but sometimes it is challenging to hold on to this. So, I will be filling up my weekend with poetry, happily-ever-after books, and movies in which the good guy or gal wins.
