Has anyone read yet if AG Holder is stepping down immediately, or, as Ryan Reilly said, later? Seems to be confusion over this.

AG Holder to step down following six-year tenure

    By Steve Benen

Political procedures aside, Holder is leaving the Attorney General’s office with a legacy more impressive than much of the political world generally appreciates.

Regular readers may recall that I’ve long been impressed with Holder’s progressive accomplishments, which haven’t always been front-page news, but which have made a significant difference in the lives of millions of Americans.

The A.G., for example, has shown amazing leadership on the issue of LGBT rights. He’s challenged Republican restrictions on voting rights. He’s fought for sentencing reforms. He’s condemned “Stand Your Ground” laws and showed effective leadership during the crisis in Ferguson. He cleared the way for Colorado and the state of Washington to pursue marijuana legalization. He’s worked to reverse the disenfranchisement of the formerly incarcerated.

Few can reasonably deny that people of color are abused by this country’s judicial system — any doubts, just check the stats on cocaine vs. crack, affluenza defense vs. being in public while Black or Brown, etc.

I’m on record here for O’Malley-Patrick 2016 ticket if my man Joe @VP Biden doesn’t run. Wouldn’t wish ODS bigotry and campaign distractions on Deval Patrick for 2016, but if he’s VP, a clear favorite for POTUS 2024.

          Actually, check that.

Yardham posted an article about a woman in Harlem (IIRC) who was assaulted inside her apartment when she had just gotten out of the shower by police, who were at the wrong apartment (think it was a domestic dispute call to police).

I’m really saddened that Holder is stepping down with so much to do regarding voter suppression and other important issues. The president will have the devil’s own time confirming anyone through the US Senate and it will be month after frustrating month of obstruction no matter who he chooses. If Holder is waiting for a successor to be “confirmed,” he might be around for a very, very long time.

With all the speculation that will follow the announcement, I’m wondering as a supporter first off if maybe Holder is having a health problem, or possibly his wife might be? Obviously, it could just be “time,” but I’m hoping it isn’t something other than number of years at it and burnout and ready to move on. Love how he did his job as AG!

      After #LandslideDems2014?

If Kamala Harris is the nominee, I doubt the Senate would dare challenge the credentials of an ELECTED AG of a state whose GNP ranks in the top 10 of the world (if CA were a nation).

    Good Morning TOD Family!

Saddened that AG Holder is resigning, but he has done a helluva job. Will be interesting to see who the President nominates.

On another note: A few days ago, I was changing channels and saw that the Alaskan news reporter that quit on air was being interviewed on TMZ so I watched. She is the owner of a Cannabis store and a leading advocate, obviously of legalizing marijuana. Harvey Levin asked her how did she end up reporting on this particular story. Didn’t the station know that she was an advocate and owner? She says: “It just goes to show you the state of journalism today. They’re lazy and don’t do their work. They operate on rumors and “he said she said” reporting.” BOOM!!!!

US Attorney General Eric Holder is to announce his resignation, White House officials have confirmed.

One of the longest serving members of President Obama’s cabinet, he led the justice department for six years.

Mr Holder is the first black US attorney general and has had the fourth longest stint in the post in history.

He recently played a key role in the administration’s response to the riots in Ferguson, Missouri, after the shooting of a black teenager by police.

The White House said in a statement that President Barack Obama would make the announcement on Thursday afternoon.

“Holder’s accomplishments have established a historic legacy of civil rights enforcement and restoring fairness to the criminal justice system.

“Holder revitalised the department’s praised Civil Rights Division, protected the rights of the LGBT community, successfully prosecuted terrorists, and fought tirelessly for voting rights, to name a few.”

He plans to remain at the justice department until his successor is in place.

May be the usual rethug arrogance will play in our favor?

  30. September 25, 2014 at 12:23 pm

I suspect that the person nominated to replace AG Holder will be someone who 1) can/will best follow through and with cases already in progress, and 2) take up cases that may possibly already be in consideration as well as those issues that are likely to arise due to civil/voting rights issues.

I always find it interesting when the emoprogs are coming out saying Holder’s term was shameful because
    1) didn’t go after the bankers
    2) didn’t prosecute war crimes
    3) they went after “whistle-blowers” and journalists.

When asked which bankers and which specific crimes, they are quiet
When asked what impact on country would have been if prosecuted war crimes, they are quiet
When asked to specify whistle-blowersd and journalists that this DOJ went after, they produce names from before this administration or tjhings that never happened.

They really are as bad as Issa when it comes to making ridiculous charges. And it doesn’t matter what was done, only what wasn’t done. It has to be perfection or nothing matters.

Idealists LOVE to Bitch and Moan……They have Nothing legislatively to show for their Idealism. I used to be one. The death of Paul Wellstone woke me up.

Yet, very few get elected. They are easily spooked. They would rather complain than get their hands “dirty”. To them, half a loaf is Never enough…..they would rather starve.

It is this behavioral instinct that has allowed the Mouthy Right and their Media pimps to gain political status……for the last 40 yrs making US a dysfunctional state.

A US woman who was repeatedly punched in the face and head by a police officer at the side of the road, will receive $1.5m (£0.9m) in compensation.

Footage posted on YouTube in July shows a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer straddling the woman, Marlene Pinnock, and hitting her many times.

The settlement agreed on Wednesday came after nine hours of talks between lawyers in Los Angeles.

A CHP statement said the officer, on leave since the incident, has resigned.

Officer should be in jail. They’re the only ones who can get away with assault and battery while hiding behind a badge … if he were even wearing his badge at the time, because, dontcha know, gotta keep their identities a secret while on patrol looking for more women to punch.

Obamacare is dramatically boosting health insurance among Latinos, a group that has historically suffered the highest uninsurance rate in the U.S.

The uninsured rate among Latinos aged 19 to 64 fell from 36 percent to 23 percent after Obamacare’s first enrollment period ended earlier this year, according to a new report from the Commonwealth Fund. That’s a bigger drop than in the U.S. overall, where uninsured rates fell from 20 percent to 15 percent.
