This is getting so little attention over here. So many Sunni’s have come out condemning ISIL, including the top Sunni cleric in Saudi Arabia.

There are a lot of reasons for this, including fear of losing members of the faithful to what is, in truth, an aberration of any Islamic sect that has ever existed.

The only thing that could turn this around is if the West, including us, tried to take over the entire military campaign against ISIL.

If there is a concerted Shiite, Sunni, Kurd push against ISIL, they will lose a lot of their credibility.

I think this is what PBO thinks…interesting how the Press…is relentless in distorting what PBO has said…they are causing confusion….

some folks do not #TrustBarack…they are waiting for the other shoe to drop…and some do the bidding of the 1% by drumming up fear and hysteria…

More and More Americans Think Astrology Is Science:

“According to data from the National Science Foundation’s just-released 2014 Science and Engineering Indicators study, Americans are moving in Perry’s direction. In particular, the NSF reports that the percentage of Americans who think astrology is “not at all scientific” declined from 62 percent in 2010 to just 55 percent in 2012 (the last year for which data is available). As a result, NSF reports that Americans are apparently less skeptical of astrology than they have been at any time since 1983.

In response, a substantial minority of Americans, ranging from 31 to 45 percent depending on the year, say consider astrology either “very scientific” or “sort of scientific.” That’s bad enough—the NSF report compares it with China, where 92 percent of the public does not believe in horoscopes—but the new evidence suggests we are also moving in the wrong direction. Indeed, the percentage of Americans who say astrology is scientifically bunk has been declining ever since a high point for astrology skepticism in 2004, when it hit 66 percent.

The recent increase in astrological credulity was most dramatic among those with less science education and less “factual knowledge,” NSF reported. In the latter group, there was a staggering 17 percentage point decline in how many people were willing to say astrology is unscientific, from 52 percent in 2010 to just 35 percent in 2012. Also apparently to blame are younger Americans, aged 18 to 24, where an actual majority considers astrology at least “sort of” scientific, and those aged 35 to 44. In 2010, 64 percent of this age group considered astrology totally bunk; in 2012, by contrast, only 51 percent did, a 13 percentage point change….continued”

Less emphasis on education, more home schooling, and a desparate need to try to figure out what our lives hold for us all play a role in this.
Americans, of all ages, crave definitive answers about what is ahead of them. Over the last several years, the ability to see oneself moving forward in life has been diminshed, much of it due to the economic situation.
Plus, there is a growing need to believe more in the supernatural element of life and astrology plays a role in that need.
It is sad, but it also relieves some people of feeling a responsibility for their lot in life. The whole sense of predetermination is big in fundamentalist circles, and astrology is seen as a tool to see what has already been determined.

      • September 19, 2014 at 3:03 pm

I wonder if this has any correlation w/ the uptick in atheists & and others leaving organized religion in the search for “growing need to believe more in the supernatural element of life and astrology plays a role in that need.” I tend to agree more w/ your assertion “Less emphasis on education, more home schooling, and a desparate need to try to figure out what our lives hold for us” as the driving factor.

    ——————————–

The point is that the GOP is addicted to the hysteria of the moment. As our President tackles one challenge after another, they keep thinking THIS will be the one that does him in. But minus all the drama, he just keeps thoughtfully and systematically taking them on and finding the best resolution possible – usually with zero assistance from Congress.

This is SO true ladyawke. PBO has a solid governing strategy. The GOP does not have a strategy – except to hope that PBO fails in whatever he does. And so they lurch from pillar to post, working in tandem with their friends in the media – inventing all kinds of stuff at the spur of the moment and using the MSM news cycle as a vehicle to spread their lies and propaganda.

Whenever the MSM stops talking or refuses to talk about something – we know it’s a net positive for PBO/Dems/country and a negative for the GOP/baggers and 1% factions.

Goodell and NFL made this a complex situation by trying to cover it up. It’s not complex…all contracts should state that domestic violence will not be tolerated, period. If accused, you will be dismissed from the team, without pay, until the outcome is decided. That’s how you show good faith and that you’re not putting money ahead of morals and safety.

Thanks donna for posting this. A hand-written letter – WOW…PBO is a better human being than I could ever hope to be even on my best days. More importantly, it’s quite reassuring to see that Melissa in turn so graciously acknowledged the Obama’s graciousness to her in the wake of her mother’s death. That’s part of what makes me so proud of our President – he is a unique individual in the sense that he does not harbor grudges even when someone may have harbored and demonstrated inappropriate behavior or ill feelings towards him in the past.

This is not to say that he’s naive or easily taken advantage of, but he is willing to see the humanity in everyone, and separate the person from what they did or said at a particular time.

Truth: POTUS and Family……move FORWARD! Total Class Act.

JRivers was a comic and is Dead now. Only her spirit would see how others thought of her after her death. Her daughter obviously was taught right for she could have concealed the hand written Note from Pres Obama without ever saying a word. For her to let the world know shows that Ugly Noonan is worthless, useless and irrelevant.

          • September 19, 2014 at 5:55 pm

When Joan Rivers went behind Johnny Carson’s back to try to get The Tonight Show, Johnny held a grudge and never spoke to her or of her after he retired. It really bothered JR who thought it was just business. Johnny valued friendship, trust, and class which JR did not have much quantity of any that did not put her first. Indeed the President and Mrs Obama sent a note of condolences to a grieving daughter that lost her mom, a mom that had no class yet they could put JR snipes against them to acknowledge JR the entertainer, mother and grandmother. I am sure if Johnny Carson were alive he might not have done the same.

Goodell should resign. But when will the head of the NRA head be asked to resign? We just had a chilling mass shooting where 8 children and one adult were murdered in cold blood by someone who’s supposed to protect them – the same individual who already had a history with gun death in his offspring.

This exaggerated focus on the NFL is the biggest demonstration of hypocrisy on domestic violence I’ve seen in a while. We pretend to be oh so outraged for days and weeks when a four-year old is brutally spanked, but yawn when the lives of eight children ranging from 3 months to 10 years are snuffed away in an instant by a gun, we hear a collective YAWN….

    • September 19, 2014 at 4:04 pm

Totally disagree ! We try to get gun laws passed, but the republicans filibuster.
It’s that god damn second amendment that keeps fucking things up.
As far as domestic violence and the nfl, it’s a Multi billion dollar industry. The media smells blood in the water, it’s what they do.
Maybe something good will come of this… At least the conversation is being submitted to the American public.

      • 58 hopefruit2
        September 19, 2014 at 4:14 pm

Don’t get me wrong jovie, I’m all for weeding out corruption and cover-up in those athletic organizations – not just the NFL, but the NHL, MBL, and NBA. And it starts at the college level.

However, this latest rash of NFL incidents as reported by the media pointed me to a different motive other than a genuine desire to see domestic violence/child abuse be reduced or eliminated. As you said, something good (and unintended) could come out of this. Lets hope so.

But I have to say this: That the NRA has such a stranglehold on members of our legislative branch is a serious and alarming problem – far more disturbing than any report of DV we saw this week. This is not about the second amendment, this is about one single lobbying body (NRA) which has been afforded enormous political and economic power to decide gun control laws, and sadly, our children are paying DEARLY.

        • September 19, 2014 at 4:27 pm

Difference between NRA is that..money flows hidden from public eyes… while NFL’s sponsors are not and represent America’s game.
Domestic abuse is meditated through emotions at hand..so is pulling a trigger that kills…
I agree with HP…Wish that deaths by guns (especially) unjustified would get same scrutiny.. and would love for NRA President to hold a press conference at every killing done by his organization.

            September 19, 2014 at 4:36 pm

Good points Kasai. At some point, gun violence will become epidemic to this country, and it won’t be limited to “inner city gangs with illegal guns” as has been the stereotyped belief.

But as you indicated, the head honchos of the NRA need far more accountability and scrutiny than they’ve been getting and the flow of $$$ into the gun lobby needs to be better tracked…

BREAKING: Kansas Senate Ballots Will Be Sent Out Without Dem Nom

In an apparent reversal, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach’s office is instructing election officials in the state to send out overseas military ballots without Democratic Senate nominee Chad Taylor or any other Democratic Senate candidate listed.

Kobach spokeswoman Samantha Poetter confirmed to TPM that the ballots would be sent out by Saturday, the deadline under state and federal law.

Poetter said that Kobach still expects Democrats to name a new nominee. But as for what Kobach would do if that happened after these absentee ballots had been sent out, she wouldn’t say.

“I actually cannot answer that for you,” Poetter said. The secretary’s office is exploring its options, she said.

She also would not say if Kobach would sue to force Democrats to name a new candidate.

The order to election officials cited “currently pending litigation concerning the United States Senate race.” A registered Democratic voter has filed a lawsuit to force Democrats to name a new candidate.

“Important progress” made in political talks

Afghan presidential contenders Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani (pictured above, on the right and left, respectively) told top political and judicial leaders on Friday that “important progress” had been made in their negotiations over creating a national unity government in the country (Pajhwok). While no additional information was given about what kind of progress had been made, the men said the prolonged election process would soon come to an end, just a few days after the talks seemingly stalled yet again.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai said he was pleased with the progress that had been made, and hoped Abdullah and Ghani would sign a final power-sharing deal soon. Arrangements for the next president’s inauguration were also discussed.”

Facing U.S. sanctions, Exxon winds down drilling in Russian Arctic

(Reuters) – Exxon Mobil said on Friday it will wind down drilling in Russia’s Arctic in the face of U.S. sanctions targeting Western cooperation with Moscow’s oil sector, after the Obama administration granted a brief extension to safely mothball its operations.

Washington intensified sanctions on Russia on Sept. 12 over its intervention in Ukraine. The measures seek to stop billions of dollars worth of cooperation between Western and Russian energy companies on oil drilling in Russia’s Arctic, in Siberia and offshore. Companies have until Sept. 26 to stop the work.

The U.S. Treasury Department gave Exxon a short extension to wind down a rig, beyond the 14 days outlined in the sanctions, the Texas-based oil major said on Friday without elaborating.

Thank you so much Mr. President..

For the first time in its 167-year history, Liberia is to receive from one nation 3000 troops, sent by United States President Barrack Obama, to fight and defeat the deadly Ebola virus that is ravaging our country.

We highly commend President Obama, the American government and people, for this decisive move to help us drive this deadly virus from our shores. This is the largest military contingent that the USA has ever deployed in an African country south of the Sahara. It is a clear demonstration of the gravity of the crisis.

      Hello everyone.

I’m sorry but if this is an accurate summary of what HRC said, one has to ask if she has forgotten that PBO inherited the second worse economic crisis in US history and with little help has not only kept the USA and global economy from disaster but has ushered in growth.

Yes, there is still income equality but the hindrance of progress in that regard is due in large part to the continuous blocking of so many of PBO’s and the Democrats’ economic proposals such as the Jobs Bill, extension of UI insurance, student loan debt, equal pay, increasing the minimum wage and the list goes on.
Why does she have to do this ?
