Shame on ABC and CNN for exploiting Foley tragedy

This past week saw American corporate media at one of its criminally shameful worst. And there is gross competition for how low they can go. Brian Ross of ABC news led the pack in exploiting the grief of James Foley’s family to push utterly offensive nonsense that the White House was derelict in pursuing efforts to rescue James Foley from the grip of the Islamic State in Syria and the Levant (ISIS/ISIL/IS). At the heart of this spurious attack is the media’s sensational headline that Foley’s mother claims that the Obama administration threatened them with prosecution if they paid ransom money to the militants to secure their son’s release.

Bam! That framing was all that was needed to shift focus away from the heinous actions of the militants, to the virulent and cynically profitable blame-Obama-for-any-and-all-horror-that-happens-in-the-world syndrome in our political zeitgeist. And like clockwork, the rest of the media, politicians, and many commentators were baited and hooked by this media scam, including, I’m sorry to say, the Foley family itself.

Brian Ross

The Foley family’s grief is heartbreaking, as is the Sotloff family’s, and now the Haines’ family’s in England. They are understandably seeking answers to what is an unimaginable nightmare, retreading their minds and hearts to see if there was anything, anything that could have been done to result in a different outcome for their loved ones. And that anguish can lead them to blame government authorities for the horrific outcome.

However, that vulnerability in the victims’ families’ post-trauma thinking is no excuse for the media to push lies and innuendo. It is no excuse for the media to omit FACTS about the government’s actions in response to the capture and ordeal the victims went through at ISIS’ hands. I posit that the omissions and lies are blatantly intentional, and not just some by-product of sloppy journalism.

ABC’s Brian Ross was all out in pushing the Foley family’s accusations as FACT, with jaundiced conclusions about the government’s role in the horror. CNN’s Anderson Cooper during his interview on AC360, feebly tried to correct Diane Foley when she accused the government of not doing anything to save her son, by stating that the government did send troops to find her son and other kidnapped Americans but was unsuccessful. Ms. Foley retorted “It was too late”, and Cooper left it there.

Really? How about pointing out that the government did expend national resources to rescue her son earlier when he was captured by Gaddafi forces in Libya in 2011? That secretary of State John Kerry, who was then Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was actively involved in securing that earlier release? How about doing some actual INVESTIGATIVE journalism to trace what happened the first time Foley was captured, and how the government was able to accomplish that release versus mitigating factors at play in this second attempt to free him in captivity in Syria?

How about discussing the responsibility of the journalist’s PRIVATE employer, GlobalPost, to protect its employees that they subcontract to other global media, in this case Agence-Press, to freelance in dangerous parts of the world? How about probing what happened to cause the rescue mission to free the captives this time around to fail?

Interestingly, when news first broke on August 19th 2014 in the immediate aftermath of James Foley’s gruesome beheading, that the government had attempted a rescue but did not find the captives, the media actually did STRAIGHT reporting on the story, and uncovering the fact that Foley had previously been captured and released in Libya in 2011, with our government’s intervention. Then all of a sudden the neutral reporting changed to the ODS-tinged nonsense we saw this past week. It is deliberate. It is vicious. It serves nefarious intentions.

More importantly, how about discussing the fact that ISIS was in fact asking for 100 million Euros ($132 million) ransom money, which was money the Foley family was going to crowd-fund in public. Sure, if I were in the family’s shoes, I’d want to do everything to save my loved one without regard for the dangerous implications. But it is up to the media reporting this to provide pertinent INFORMATION to help the public make informed judgments.

Crowd-funding ransom money in this age of viral social media in full view of terrorist groups who are very savvy in using gruesome spectacle to push their criminally warped ideologies, would set us all on a whole new precipice of horror. Any American citizen then becomes a target for kidnapping. Why? It would be an even more lucrative business model than it frighteningly already is. There’d be a gold rush to set up camp as terrorist groups, then simply demand public funding of ransom monies. And there would be zero guarantee they would hold their end of the deal. Painful as it is for families to bear, there is a reason we have laws against paying ransom to terrorist groups.

The counterargument that other countries routinely pay ransom money to secure release of their nationals so why not us too, is facile. Not all kidnappings are the same, nor do all captives hold interchangeable value to their captors. Unfortunately, American captives possess ideological and propaganda value to these terrorist groups, not monetary value. Their intent is to maximize FEAR CASUALTIES in our collective consciousness. ISIS proto-founder al Zarkawi perfected this blueprint in the rise of al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) during the second Iraq war. Call it poisonous seed of blowback. But this IS the complex reality we must grapple with now.

Foley3Diane Foley’s statement

And it behooves a responsible and not a charlatan media to help us cross this warped Rubicon with honest, well sourced FACTS, many of which do not lend themselves to facile domestic partisan brawls. That ship has sailed. Sadly, it is now de rigueur for corporate media to filter everything, including delicate foreign policy and national security challenges through the green bile of Obama-Derangement-Syndrome.

Our job as citizen-journalists is to always wise up to the rigged news terrain, nose-out the profiteers behind the curtain, and hunt for the FACTS ourselves.

I want to believe that only the grief of a mother is the cause of such words from Mrs. Foley. The pain of losing her son is blurring her judgment and the facts she knows as true.

“Listen up, people of Scotland: Groundskeeper Willie has some political advice for you. The beloved Simpsons character is taking a stand in a video recently released by Fox, saying he is pro-independence. Scotland will be voting on Sept. 18 to decide if the country will separate from the United Kingdom.

In the video, the kilt-wearing Springfield Elementary School janitor makes a case for independence, touting the country’s oil reserves and whiskey-making capabilities. “Scotland is the home to two-thirds of Europe’s oil reserves,” Willie says. “Notice how in no country rich in oil does a man wear pants. We also make a fine damn whiskey. And we spell whiskey right, too!” (Scots prefer spelling it “whisky.”) He even volunteers himself to lead the potentially newly independent country, instead of “safe choice” Alex Salmond: “Willie won’t back down to world leaders because I haven’t a clue who they are, and I’m not willin’ to learn!”…” via Mashable

“If you give a mouse a cookie, he will ask for a glass of milk.” Negotiating with terrorists will only embolden them and make those who are willing to be blackmailed more vulnerable. My heart aches for all of the families who have lost loved ones to such heinous groups, but giving in to any of their demands will not save anyone and will only endanger others.

Maybe I’m wrong. I don’t know what it’s like to lose a child. So I have not walked in her shoes. But for whatever reason I am not buying that it is all about the grief she is dealing with. And I’m not placing all the blame on the media. I sense Mother Foley want to blame that Obama. I’m sorry she lost her son, I truly am.

I agree that grief should never be used as an excuse to spread lies. The sad part is that this might end up having the opposite effect – less public sympathy for the Foley Family, and a developing perception of them as anti-government opportunists.

Your writing is such a lyrical uplift, despite the grim nature of this essay.

Your students have no idea how fortunate they are (too many professors get wrapped up in themselves and produce too many words to make their point clearly).

I wasn’t aware of Brian Ross’ role in this MSM deception. When I first began reading tweets during the 2008 campaign, I recall he lied about some nonsense about then-Senator Obama (can’t remember what it was now, but he was the first outright professional liar I encountered on Twitter).

Heard on the radio that COS McDonough stated that prosecution of the Foley was never under consideration. I think that’s what McDonough said — I checked the Face The Nation website but couldn’t locate this statement — will check there later for full McDonough transcript. What I did hear was extremely level-headed, yet forceful. Good job by McDonough.

I absolutely hate the lengths the MSM will go to undermine America and its well-considered foreign policy, i.e., a 21st century NATO for the Middle East.

It’s poignant, but very human, Bob. It’s important to remember and mark every day with sorrow and gratitude for those who are fighting, but a certain level of ‘life’ has to go one or the stress and anxiety of a constant war footing becomes paralyzing. It’s why in WWII you had patriotic war movies and those that just showed every day life in America. As the struggle with Russia wears on, it’s going to become harder and harder to maintain a ‘normal life,’ so the people of Ukraine should experience as much normalcy as they can for as long as they can.

  21. September 14, 2014 at 2:58 pm

Yes, Arapaho, it’s been obvious, especially since 20Jan09, that the majority of US media and all of the GOP have been willing to harm America and Americans in order to inflict damage on President Obama.

Regarding COS McDonough’s comments, I don’t have the full transcript but did RT a tweet with a link to the following:

“McDonough said nobody was threatened, but the families were made aware of the law. The U.S. National Security Council has indicated that is against the law to make ransom payments to certain people or entities, including the Islamic State, and that it is against U.S. policy to grant concessions to hostage takers.

“In terms of what was communicated to the families, in the midst of many, many meetings over the course of this very difficult circumstance, we obviously made clear what the law is,” McDonough said during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday.” “We didn’t threaten anybody, but we made clear what the law is. That’s our responsibility, to make sure we explain the law and uphold the law.”

McDonough said that as a father, he feels for the “very difficult circumstances” the families are enduring. He emphasized that the administration “took every effort and will continue to take every effort to secure people.””

When I see a list of accomplishments from Bernie Sanders, and a list of how/if he’s supported any of President Obama’s efforts (willingly, without needing his arm twisted), then I’ll pay attention. Otherwise, he’s just a loud voice along with the rest of the Emoprogs.

It isn’t the president who could care less what they think. And it isn’t Congress. The former fiancee of Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) found out the engagement was off the same way the rest of the world did: by reading a lengthy Facebook post written by Sanford.

“I learned it from the press today,” Maria Belen Chapur told The New York Times. Chapur was in Paris, where she had been vacationing with Sanford, where the two had discussed the plans to set a date for their marriage, capping a long and tumultuous relationship that began as an extramarital affair.

After a week together Chapur described as like a “honeymoon,” she pressed Sanford on a wedding date. “I had a spectacular week, you know I love you, but I don’t want to continue in the category of mistress, and if we continue like this I continue in that category, and I can’t bear it anymore. It has been really painful to me,” she said she told him. Sanford is said to have replied, “24 months. If not I’ll say goodbye and I will look for you in 24 months.”

Wow….the Latina lover found out she was dumped from the press?

Tavis Smiley Knocks President Obama Again

The political commentator said blacks have lost ground in every single leading economic category during his terms as president.

    By: Lynette Holloway
    Posted: Sept. 14 2014 10:34 AM

Tavis Smiley, known for his unrelenting criticism of Barack Obama, recently told the Huffington Post that his commentary is rooted in holding the president accountable as the nation’s leader.

“As Cornel West and I said many years ago; I respect the president, I will protect the president against white supremacist attacks or anything else he’s unfairly targeted for,” he told HuffPost Live host Marc Lamont Hill. “So you’re respecting, you’re protecting, but you’re correcting when he’s wrong. Not because he’s Barack Obama, but because he’s the president.”

Smiley went on to express concern about the current state of African Americans under Obama’s leadership.

“But the data is going to indicate—I said this before and I’m not happy about this, I don’t celebrate this,” Smiley told Hill. “I don’t say it as a way of demonizing the president or casting an aspersion on him – but the data is going to indicate that black people lost ground in every single leading economic category during the Obama years.”

I cannot read the article you posted, because I might gag. A friend called me a while ago, to tell me she had watched Bill Maher’s show where Tavis was interviewed to talk about his book on Dr. King. Friend saw it at bookstore, picked up a copy, and immediately put it down. About this point, I told her to please stop quoting Tavis from the HBO interview or talking about his book, because I might gag. She said the reason she didn’t purchase the book was because “I noticed it was one of those books where the type is large and spread out, as though the publisher wanted to stretch it to 150 pages so it would look like lots of “all new” information on Dr. King.” Yep. Sounds about like what the grifter Tavis Smiley might do, to draw attention to himself. Can’t believe I fell for all of it, when I watched his PBS show and the State of the Black Union event for years and years, before he got ODS with the others. Off to gag.

Zizi, I second rikyrah’s statement. We have a venal and immoral media that actively works to undermine the US’s interest abroad and promote divisiveness at home. Values such as respect for the office of the President or support of our military abroad are non-existent. This country has allowed the ugliest of tabloid journalism to become the national norm. If there is a grieved or half crazed mother to exploit, they go at it. If there’s a delicate international negotiation to undermine, they leap on it. If there is a way to inflame racist resentment, they light the first match. I have nothing but contempt for the American media in the year 2014 and I believe them to be beyond shame.

Since then Hamas has not fired a single rocket, attacked an Israeli target, or done anything to break the terms of the ceasefire. Israel has done the following:

    1. Annexed another 1500 acres of West Bank land
    2. Seized $56 million of PA tax revenue
    3. Not lifted the illegal blockade (as required by the ceasefire)
    4. Broken the ceasefire by firing at fishermen on four separate occasions
    5. Detained six fishermen
    6. Killed a 22-year-old, Issa al Qatari, a week before his wedding
    7. Killed 16-year-old Mohammed Sinokrot with a rubber bullet to the head

Well..This week I lost a good friend I’ve known for 15yrs…We never really talk politics…and I try to leave the topic alone since I know she’s republican…but last week, she told me she watches Fox and finally broke down and told me how she “hates PBO” with all her being…I tried to explain so many things..She concluded that If I like PBO I am no longer her friend and hung up!
First I was devastated..but realized how powerful Fox can be and it has really divided this country more that I could ever realize…
Life goes on…and thankful for this place “TOD” is my refuge…even when I am not blogging.
    Thank you so much!

Hugs to you, Kasai, for that bitter pill! Truthfully, there are more of us than the haters, and “there’s an endless supply of paint.” I keep telling myself.

Thanks JB. Here I was painting a portrait of her puppy for her birthday suprise..I am still going to send it regardless..Will know that I am not going to be bitter..and remind her of the beautiful memories we shared.

You are rising above it, which is a definite mark of the value of the friendship I’m sure you offered (and still offer) her. Maybe she’ll come to her senses.

Regret the loss of your friend, Kasai. Fox is a super sophisticated propaganda machine tailored for folk who’ve never learned how to think critically and who are readily susceptible to fear. It’s one of several organizations that need to be dismantled, but that will only happen when a majority of Americans commit to demanding honesty from the 4th Estate.

So true Bob…Fox is cancer of our society…I had no idea that even intelligent folks have a hard time looking at facts..Just as I was able to show her..but she wasn’t going to have none of it…Her Hate for PBO is palpable…still hurt…but in time I will get over it..

Well Kasai, you will be just fine in time. Hear me, you will be just fine.

I’ll add my hugs, too. I never used to care about what political party someone belonged to, before this presidency. I knew that the “tea Party Republicans” hated this president; but what surprised me the most is people that I respected being against everybody having access to health care.

Why does anyone own 30 cars, except as a business fleet? Why does anyone need a 100 million chalet? I truly do not understand, as a general group, people who have a lot of money. Wonder if Jon is going to try to take it all with him when he has to depart this world?

“As a conclusion of the Ilovays‘k battle I’ll say that: I have fought with real heroes and thank to everyone, who showed courage and valor. Under Ilovays‘k I haven’t seen a single coward. I watched how we fired at Russian troops and them running away. We can defend our nation from Russian aggression. But this requires professionalism – at all levels, at the command level, at the level of mobilization, at the level of equipment, intelligence, interaction, technical equipment and logistics. We must fight in the blessed memory of our heroes, for those who survived Ilovays‘k and for those who stayed there forever…”
