Don’t know if there’s anyone here that saw my comment last night. It was about a post on Facebook — saying that PO uses ISIL instead of ISIS because he and the administration consider Israel enemies……something along those lines. (It was from some right-wing rag.) I responded to her with two comments….told her I had recently seen a good, thorough explanation about the difference between the two and when I found it, I would share w/her. Also said that the article was totally misleading and wrong. Few minutes later, I saw that she had commented on her post. By the time I got my iPad ‘open’ and went to FB, there was no comment from her. She made it, then quickly deleted. Early this morning, I checked and she had deleted the entire post. 🙂 🙂 Hehehe. She wasn’t going to give me the opportunity to call her out any more than I did in the two comments I made. btw, I was very nice. 🙂

This morning, I also responded to my nephew who had a snarky comment with a link on our cousin’s post about how much the deficit is down under PO. He may not even see my comment, also with a DIFFERENT link about the deficit. This cousin (female who lives in NC) used to be a Republican. Boy, has she changed. She shares things on FB that amaze me and make me so proud of her. I later sent her message on FB saying that we don’t really even need to use/provide people/Republicans with charts, graphs, stats because the best way to know how much things have improved is to listen to the Republicans—-how VERY seldom do we hear any of them saying anything about jobs or the deficit or Obamacare or foreclosures or auto industry or energy/how much oil we import or …………..ANY issue. The protest letter signed by the veterans of the unit was sent to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and armed forces chiefs.
The newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth quoted the letter as saying that unlike in other countries there was “no oversight on methods of intelligence or tracking, and the use of intelligence information against the Palestinians, regardless of whether they are connected to violence or not”.
“We refuse to take part in actions against Palestinians and refuse to continue serving as a tool for deepening military rule in the Occupied Territories,” the letter added.
“Intelligence allows ongoing control over millions of people, thorough and intrusive monitoring and invasion into most aspects of life. All of this does not allow for normal living, fuels more violence and puts off any end to the conflict.”
The names of the signatories were not published, but they include officers, former instructors and senior NCOs.

Part of working with the moderates (which few are by US standards, but by Arab standards they are) is to make Assad consider working out a political solution that is acceptable to both parties so that there can then be a more unified front in Syria against ISIL. Making the moderate opposition stronger is part of that process of forcing him to the table.
Agree, John. And, even more than forcing Assad ‘to the table,’ is having him realize his best option is to accept asylum from one of the parties offering it.
I’m afraid that Putin’s influence may prevent Assad from making ANY concession that would be in the interest of Syria.

I saw on the news that it was already snowing somewhere in that part of the country. Should be an interesting winter…maybe even an interesting autumn.
I think the North Dakota got a record early snowfall.
And it wasn’t even close. Usually when a record is broken (in this case the lowest high temp for the date) it is by 1or 2 degrees. I think we broke it by 5-6 degrees. I just hope this record stands for a long time.

The US Government does not allow ransom payments to terrorists. Period. Feel badly for the family, but that’s just the way it is and any American, traveling anywhere abroad, must never forget that they are doing so at their own risk, unless they are US Government personnel deployed to serve (in whatever capacity). All deployed US Government personnel know the drill, if captured ransom will not be paid.
The government spokesman said just that. Just shy of denying that the family was “threatened with prosecution”. I’m hoping we hear that later.
I feel for the grief of the family; but I’m also tired of U.S. citizens putting themselves in dangerous countries and expecting the U.S. to fix the international incident.

And I will say that this is a very disgusting and manipulative ploy by ABC to mislead people who are unaware of these rules into sympathizing with this family at the expense of support for the US Government. ABC news never stated in the article that this rule exists or has existed for time immemorial. It’s not a new rule, and it certainly was NOT a threat as the article is implying.
I’m taking the ABC reports with a grain of salt – the way this story is framed is just too familiar (blame Obama for Foley’s death) and GOP-esque for my comfort.
On the same note, I find it rather amusing that the media is so focused using these two unfortunate excecutions to somehow blame the Obama administration – when they basically yawned during the beheadings of eight other journalists during GWB’s presidency.
It was an interview with the family. I have to agree with Bobfr – you put yourself in harm’s way and not as a U.S. serviceman or employee of the government – you have no right to expect the U.S. to create an international incident.
I understand that it was an interview with the family – but my concern is that ABC News is exploiting this grieving family in order to make it a negative thing about the Administration. The mere fact that they reported this story without telling readers what Bob just said is highly problematic.
If this is a long-standing policy of the US government that foreign-based US journalists are aware of (and I’m assuming they are and have to sign on the dotted lines), then how can ABC news be reporting this as “threats made” by the Obama administration. That is false reporting – regardless of what the family may have said or thought.
That’s exactly my fear, too, hopefruit.
ABC was cagey. The “family said” there were threats. The great dodge of sleazy journalists: it’s ‘accurate’ (the family said it was “threatened”). Whether it’s true – that’s not their problem. It used to be the point of journalism – to find the truth.
I’m very concerned about the hysteria that will be come from this. And the “hearings” and the accusations.
What is also undeniably true: PBO put our military at risk to try to rescue these journalists.
Indeed 57 – and since we’re not privy to the actual interview, we have no way of knowing how she managed to even say this. What kinds of questions were asked…whether or not the interviewer knew about the long standing US policy and whether that was discussed.
ABC’s agenda is so transparent with this article – it’s really sad. I wish the family all the peace and comfort they could possibly get at this time, but I do hope that at some point, once they’ve passed the initial stages of grieving/anger/blaming, they will see things for what they really are – and realize who is really on their side and who isn’t.

I doubt that US threatened legal action. The Gov’t under this president will NEVER deny a family to try to find ways to rescue their loved ones. I can ONLY guess that had the family implied a US connection to this Fund Raising…..then I can see where the Gov’t might have strongly objected.
