G’morning Chips, TOD, lurkers, everyone and congrats COS on #1! 🙂 Thanks Chips for front-paging that lil’ update on the “Impeach Obama” rally. Wonder if MSM will report…

And still silence from CNN and Jake Tapper on “Josie”

      • August 24, 2014 at 10:22 am

I doubt this is going to help Tapper’s *objective* reporting as well, Chips!

FERGUSON, Mo. — The small city of Jennings, Mo., had a police department so troubled, and with so much tension between white officers and black residents, that the city council finally decided to disband it. Everyone in the Jennings police department was fired. New officers were brought in to create a credible department from scratch.

That was three years ago. One of the officers who worked in that department, and lost his job along with everyone else, was a young man named Darren Wilson. Some of the Jennings officers reapplied for their jobs, but Wilson got a job in the police department in the nearby city of Ferguson. On Aug. 9, Wilson, who is white, killed unarmed black teenager Michael Brown after Brown and a friend had been walking down the middle of a street. Wilson, 28, has completely vanished from public view. He has not explained publicly what happened in that brief, lethal encounter….continued

“Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go through training as an ISIS terrorist? Or better yet, where you would go to find such advanced training? All you have to do to find the answer to these questions is turn to the nearest ISIS media twitter account and click on that bright blue Justpaste.it link. Let’s take a look at the photos posted in July showing one of the Islamic State’s training camps in Ninewa Province and see what we can learn….

…If we examine the ISIS class of 2014 martial arts lesson, road march, and graduation photo, we can see several bridges in the background spanning over a large river. After doing just a little bit of research we find this general area in Google Earth along Tigris River in Mosul that looks like it could be a fit based on the land marks available in the images.

…In this graduation photograph we can see one of the bridges with a large building visible in the background, with the photograph taken on a tree lined road. In this case it was necessary to use the site Flash Earth with its more up to date imagery to find the building, which appears to have only been recently constructed…continued

So Rand Paul is doubtful that the Ferguson shooting had anything to do with race. This man continues to remind people of how clueless, dishonest, and unfit he is for the Presidency. I don’t care how many eye exams/surgeries he did in Central America.

So some white guy from Kentucky is telling the black people in Ferguson that it’s all in their head. Rand Paul doesn’t know a dam thing about what it’s like to be black.

I say if he decides to run for President, this stuff writes itself. Will go to Central America to perform eye surgeries, yet for American citizens, he wants Obamacare repealed. Screw him. We’ll see how well that works for him if /when the time comes. Like I’ve said all along, he’s nothing but a fraud.

Jansing spoke to MSNBC’s Joy Reid about the ongoing meeting of American and African leaders in Washington D.C. “The White House is clearly, I would assume, hoping this will be part of the president’s legacy, given his background,” Reid said.

“Yeah, the fact that he’s from Kenya,” Jansing replied breezily. “And the fact that when he was elected there were expectations on the African continent that he would do great things for them.”

There is actually a real danger of war, but not where these crazies are saying it is. The danger is in eastern Europe, between Russia and Ukraine, with the EU along with individual European nations inevitably getting involved. I understand that to Americans this seems remote and uninteresting, but I live in Finland, which traditionally, because of its geopolitical position next to Russia, has always suffered directly and on its own territory whenever the Russians go on a nationalism-fueled expansionist spree — which is what is happening now. Our eastern border is very close to St. Petersburg. The other Baltics (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia) are also concerned. Putin’s macho nationalist-expansionst strutting, calling the Ukrainians “fascists” (code for “turning toward western values”), is beng swallowed unquestioningly by the majority of the Russian people.
I pick up the paper every morning dreading what I’ll find. And the situation is getting worse, not better. A huge convoy of Russian trucks just crossed the border into Ukraine (and back); they said they were bringing humanitarian relief, but this seems uncertain, and nobody knows what they were carrying (possibly guns for the separatists). The international Red Cross says they have nothing to do with this. Putin of course says it’s an insult and a provocation that anyone is questioning his motives.
After the horrors of World War II, I was sure that Europeans would never again consider the possibility of a European war. Evidently I was wrong, and every generation nas to learn this bitter lesson over again.

But for the U.S. to get involved in this would probably make the situation worse, not better; Putin would then have an excuse to go to war to counter “American aggression”.
Is anyone in the U.S. commenting on this situation?

    • August 24, 2014 at 11:16 am

To put this into (some) perspective – I have traveled along the Finish-Soviet Union border in 1989, by bicycle. The Finnish maintained a 1.5 km (1 mile) no-mans-land between “their” border and the actual one (only residents could enter). So powerful was the risk assumed about a diplomatic crisis between the two countries, that I wasn’t even allowed to go to the Soviet side of the Finnish – Soviet border on the road from Helsinki to Leningrad to ask for a visum to visit Leningrad.

Later I learned that it would be next to impossible to reach Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) by bike, as the “road” deteriorated from being nicely asfalted to “dirt road” within a short distance from said border crossing …

Hi meta, good to see you this morning. Did you feel the shaking? Reports on the news is that it rocked SF, but no damage or fallen objects in homes or businesses.

I felt a small one down here, yesterday…

      • August 24, 2014 at 11:44 am

Hey, West Coast Girl! Yes, I was awakened at 3:20am by a definite rolling. Impossible to go back to sleep when you don’t know if there will be more coming. So I got up and put my emergency backpack by the door and got semi-dressed just in case.

No damage in SF but it’s very bad in the Napa region. Just got an email from close friend in Yountville who said lots of bad damage there and no phone service. Many injuries, a couple of people in serious condition, including a child. I fear there will be TONS of economic damage as well.

In A Victory for Public Education Judge Says NC School Vouchers Are Unconstitutional

The judge, Superior Court Judge Robert Hobgood, identified the Republican legislation, “Opportunity Scholarship Program,” as a scam to “siphon money from the public schools in favor of private schools and allows funding of non-public schools that discriminate on account of religion.” The judge was not finished, and besides decrying the obscenity of school vouchers, he correctly identified the major flaw in charter schools; they have no obligation to teach anything.

Just a few of the reasons the judge gave for ruling school vouchers unconstitutional are: appropriates to private schools grades K-12, by use of funds which apparently have gone to the university system budget but which should be used exclusively for establishing and maintaining the uniform system of free public schools, appropriates education funds in a manner that does not accomplish a public purpose, appropriates educational funds outside the supervision and administration of the state board of education, and appropriates taxpayer funds to educational institutions that have no standards, curriculum and requirements for teachers and principals to be certified.” In essence, the judge concluded that the North Carolina legislation “fails the children of North Carolina when they are sent with public taxpayer money to private schools that have no legal obligation to teach them anything.”

    More here: http://www.politicususa.com/2014/08/24/judge-north-carolina-school-vouchers-unconstitutional.html

Paul Ryan Confronted By Dreamers During Book Signing

During a book signing in Florida on Saturday, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) was confronted by a group of Dreamers over his vote against Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, also known as DACA.

“A couple weeks ago you voted for defunding DACA,” one Dreamer asked Ryan, who was signing copies of his new book, The Way Forward. “It would put me and my sister up for deportation. We just had a question — do you want to deport me and my sister?”

Ryan largely ignored the question, pressing the activists to “read the position in the book.” The activists were escorted away from the congressman.

He was later confronted again by Ray Jose, an organizer with immigrant youth organization United We Dream. Jose was escorted out of the book store by a security guard.
