            Lately, I only see two.

Why Don’t Cops Give Our Kids the Same Break They Gave the Ray Allen Intruders?

Former Miami Heat star forward Ray Allen is again standing on center court. This time, however, Allen stands in the unusual plight of victim. He was inadvertently thrust into the spotlight by events that reinforce the problems of places like Ferguson, Mo., and the issues of fairness and equality and justice across this country.

Unlike a number of other recent high-profile cases, the facts aren’t really in dispute. At 2:30 a.m. last Thursday night, Allen’s wife, Shannon, was awakened by loud voices in their bedroom where she had been sleeping with the couple’s four young children, Ray Allen said in a statement. After she heard male voices loudly discussing their flat-screen televisions and other property, she sat up wide-awake to find at least five people flashing large lights in the bedroom.

    ………………

But here’s where the Allens’ story really deserves our attention: Detectives said the seven young people (we don’t yet know their ages) confessed to the break-in. They’d been at a party next door, and were curious to see how a future NBA Hall of Famer lives. They say they thought that since Allen was no longer playing for the Heat, he and his family had moved out of the house. They didn’t take anything from the Allens’ home and they weren’t arrested or charged because officials said they didn’t take anything and didn’t intend to.

rikyrah , I wondered the same thing when I heard the story. It isn’t even about whether or not they intended to take something. They broke into someone’s home. I find it hard to believe that they were just there to look.

“Earlier today, while visiting a state enterprise, the Gas Turbine Research and Production Complex “Zorya”-“Mashproekt,” Poroshenko also made statements about Ukraine’s territorial integrity:

“We will not let anyone call into question the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state. Our state doesn’t threaten anyone. It is peaceful and doesn’t want to make war,” the President said.

So while a diplomatic breakthrough has been heralded by the media this week, the bottom line is that it appears President Poroshenko is standing firm on key demands — that the Russian military must stop its aggression, and that the separatists will have to stand down and allow the Ukrainian government to regain control of the east.

Every day since the diplomatic ‘breakthrough’ was announced Russia has sent more arms and fighters across the border. There are continued reports that each day Russian artillery, based on Russian soil, has bombarded Ukrainian territory. And just today evidence has surfaced that Russian airborne units are already making war deep inside Ukraine. So it remains to be seen how willing Putin will be to withdraw his troops from eastern Ukraine.”

That mayor is unbelievably strange, in so many ways, and that’s being kind. Not to mention he said, while tip-toeing through the Missouri tulips, ” … there’s no racial divide in Ferguson” ~ and now this. Tell me he ran unopposed in a low turnout race. It’s beginning to sound trite, even to me, but: This is what happens when people don’t vote.

        August 21, 2014 at 12:46 pm

12% turnout in non-presidential elections is what I heard. At what point do people realize that they have no right to bitch if they don’t vote?

And more to the fact: what does it take to get people to vote? How many more threats to American values and progress do we need to endure before people think voting is as important as watching a football game or American Idol?

What the hell does it take, jacque?

        • August 21, 2014 at 12:53 pm

it takes HOPE and the belief that things can change…

a people empowered can do anything

          • August 21, 2014 at 1:22 pm

The turnout in my university town of high income tends to be pathetic, despite a very high level of income, education, jobs with flexibilty to leave work between 9 and 5 to vote, and cars in which to drive to the polls, where nice people wait to treat us kindly and respectfully. I’ll bet voting in Ferguson is a very different story. And intentionally so: They schedule the Ferguson elections in the Springtime, in off-years so that the publicity and energy of state and national elections is not part of the incentive to go vote. And if this community, given what we have seen about schools and the Mayor referring to Michael Brown’s body as “…it…” until corrected by reporter, were to find and run a good candidate, how much would one good justice oriented member of this City Council be able to do? I’m an optimist and I believe in Can-Do and Think Positive, but for us to stand in judgment of the Ferguson community and blame them for not voting as though doing so would have changed this, is very wrong. It is so very easy to be distracted, and the intentional distractions are flying thick and fast.

            http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2014/08/18/3472278/this-is-the-most-important-reform-ferguson-can-enact-to-prevent-another-standoff/
“…To explain, a major contributor to the disparity between Ferguson’s population demographics and that of its leaders is Ferguson’s unusual elections calendar. Under the Ferguson City Charter, “[t]he regular city election shall be held annually on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in April,” and these elections are held in odd-numbered years. Thus, Ferguson chooses its leadership at a time when there is no state or national-level general election, and it is unlikely that there are even any major primary candidates on the ballot. Missouri, like the federal government, holds its gubernatorial and state legislative elections in even-numbered years…”

            • August 21, 2014 at 1:27 pm

I do not mean that a vigorous and dedicated on-going effort to register people to vote and support and educate the community and change this is a bad idea, or hopeless. Not at all! Good idea, and I see it happening. But if I look at where they are right now and why, I see one hundred reasons why voter turnout is what it is, and the people of Ferguson are not the ones we need to criticize or blame. I would be so depressed, hopeless, and maybe even fearful, that I would not be one of the 12% who did go vote. The officials of Ferguson are surely well aware of those numbers, and we can all see what a very skilled and dedicated game they play to keep themselves where they are, using subtle, dog whistle ways and overt terrorist ways both.

Sometimes people are too busy housing and feeding their families, getting the kids to school, working long hours, to get involved in the political process … but with some good voter registration drives right in the neighborhood, which have already started, and which are the only “boots on the ground” that matter … I’m thinking these residents will be voting en masse from this point on. Hopefully, this “new” wake-up call will extend around the country.

The Mayor is a GOPer. In that town, No party ID is required. Plus, he won with just a tiny turn out. Unfortunately, those who don’t vote, are truly electing those they don’t like in their government.

The way to help the people of Ferguson is for citizens to call state and local officials and ask that they put out a statement speaking out against what is going on in Ferguson.

Citizens can call their friends and neighbors and ask that they contact representatives and request they speak out against the atrocities. Write letters and submit to newspapers speaking out against this demanding that their country do better than this.

Ray Allen Pissed Off At Police For Not Taking Home Invasion Seriously
    Rohan Nadkarni

NBA free agent Ray Allen and his family are not thrilled with Coral Gables police after a recent break-in at Allens’ home.

The family’s home in Coral Gables, a suburb of Miami where Allen most recently played with the Heat, was broken into last Thursday by a group of teenagers. The teenagers claimed they just wanted to see the house and thought it had been vacated, and police declined to press any charges. The Allens see the situation much differently.

The family released this statement Sunday, per the Miami Herald:

Elementary teacher suspended for asking white student ‘cops’ to shoot black ‘Michael Browns’
    By Scott Kaufman

A sixth-grade teacher at Brantley Elementary in Selma, Alabama has been placed on administrative leave after a parent reported that students were asked to research and reenact the Michael Brown shooting in class, The Selma Times-Journal reports.

The administration became aware of the assignment after Jessica Lynn Baughn posted about it on Facebook. “His teacher made them reenact the two current shooting of the young black males,” she wrote. “The white students had to play the police officer. She even has them get on the internet and research how many times the young man was shot where he was shot at.”

“That is absurd to me then you turn around and make them reenact every bit of it including the shooting,” she continued. “Then sit in class and tells them our black children can not walk in their own neighborhood without white people shooting them and she hated to sound racist but whatever.”

There are times I wonder if any of the abuse, aggression, stupidity, etc. in today’s world will ever end. Sure we have come a-ways from the dark ages, but how far have we come? You give your daughter permission to go on a field trip, and when a sexual incident of some sort occurs, with both parties admitting something happened, those ‘in charge’ try to brush it aside.

Mother finds Seattle school district ignored ‘numerous’ rapes, including her daughter’s
By David Edwards – Thursday, August 21, 2014 11:53 EDT

    //………………….

The hospital diagnosed her with rape trauma syndrome, and her victim advocate at the hospital was quoted as saying that the girl “presented as one who had experienced a rape.”

“I did not pay attention to her that much,” the boy reportedly explained to investigators when he was asked if the victim had said anything during the encounter.

The school contacted authorities, and the district attorney acknowledged that a sexual assault may have taken place. But in the end, the district attorney’s office declined to prosecute because it said that it did not have enough evidence to support her claims.

Also on that same internet page is the story of a 25yr old mom who shot her 6yr old son (on the lip) with a recently acquired BB gun to show him it`s not a toy. Apparently he kept playing with it even though she had told him repeatedly not to. [Maybe locking it out of his reach was not an option? 🙄 ] She got charged with child endangerment, etc. I know she did shoot him deliberately, but I did wonder why some other parents whose children accidentally kill themselves/siblings because of guns left around aren’t charged with endangerment too. The shooting him to get the point across was excessive, though I admit it reminded me of my grandma’s generation saying ‘If you can’t hear, you will feel.’ Wonder if this 25yr old was raised by a grandparent?

One parent this morning said that the youth who made these threats were sick and needed help. No one called them Thugs or Criminals. I don’t need to tell you their race – do I?

The two teens at the center of the plot denied charges of making criminal threats Wednesday in Pasadena Juvenile Court.
The suspects, identified only as 16 and 17-year-old boys who were about to enter their senior year, were arrested Monday.
School officials received a tip from the public last week about their plans to allegedly kill three named staff members and numerous students. Authorities found evidence that the boys were researching bullet-proof vests, rifles, submachine guns, bombs and other explosives, especially propane, but had not acquired any weapons yet, police said.
Police Chief Art Miller said the teens wanted to “kill as many people as possible.”

Op-Ed: Killer Mike on the Problems Underlying the Chaos in Ferguson
    News /

By Killer Mike | August 19, 2014 3:05 PM EDT

I have searched all night and day for new and better words that could express my feelings and fear for the people of this country. I found no new words. I have no hope-filled insight to deliver. I only have this warning to all Americans: Whatever this country is willing to do to the least of us, it will one day do to us all.

The police are paid by the public and carry a public trust, and they take an oath to protect us as citizens. The police have lost sight of that and must be reminded that we pay them to protect us, not to simply engage and cage us.

We trust police with the power of life and death and with that trust comes a greater responsibility to be better than the current standard of policing I see across America everyday. Being a cop must be hard. My dad was one, and never wanted any of his children to follow in his footsteps. Being a cop is often seeing the worst of the human condition and behavior. With all of that said, there is no reason that Mike Brown and also Eric Garner are dead today — except bad policing, excessive force and the hunt-and-capture-prey mentality many thrill-seeking cops have adapted.

NASA discovers a mysterious source is still wrecking the ozone layer

New research by NASA found that a compound from an unknown source is destroying the ozone layer.

The compound — carbon tetrachloride — has been banned globally, and NASA doesn’t know where it’s coming from. Carbon tetrachloride used to be found in fire extinguishers and dry-cleaning products, but it was phased out under the Montreal Protocol in 1987.

NASA found that 39 kilotons of carbon tetrachloride were emitted over the last year, which is 30 percent of the peak emissions that occurred before the treaty went into effect. Zero emissions were reported from 2007 to 2012, so the findings are alarming.

My guess is this is a threat emitted by the constant whining and dragging on of the GOP, neglecting their official duties to the people, and a byproduct of their ODS. Despite the findings being lower in ’07-’12, surely last year was a very bad year for the GOP. I hold the likes of Paul Fryan, TedFluz, BitchMcConnell and JohnBoy MCCain responsible for this scientific crisis.

    Greetings TOD family

This has been a rough few weeks. I come here daily to be encouraged and to recharge my batteries so I have the strength to keep working for change. I am very grateful to this community.

I have a request to all who come here. Please share stories of how you or those you know are working to hold the Senate and Take Back the House. Also lets try and bring encouraging and hopeful stories to help us cope with all this hardship and violence.

I just re-tweeted Meta’s post about 75 days until the election. It was so wonderful to see the post about teachers who are cleaning up in Ferguson. I got a devilish delight in reading about the community where the Republicans are sniping with each other.

We need to prepare to be hit with tragedies here at home and overseas everyday, until Nov 4th. It is so easy to focus on those and loose sight of the fact that what we do in the next 75 days will determine what the President can do in the last 2 years of his Presidency. During the election so many of us posted encouragement about keeping our heads down and doing the work. We need those voices again.

I remember the post from “ThisMagicalEarth” a few weeks ago
” What we have to do is find ways to take care of ourselves emotionally and stay in balance. And the other is to decide to be a part of solutions.”

    and another from jackiegrumbacker
“There is an old wisdom I learned may decades ago about recognizing the difference between what you can change and what you can’t and then giving everything you can to the things you CAN change.”

Imagine what PBO, Harry Reid, and Nancy P could do on for the next 2 years if they were in control. Now – ask yourself what can you do to make that happen. If you don’t have an answer, please ask the folks here to help. There is a way for each of you to get contribute.

Here is what we have been doing in NorCal.

Tuesday we held a phone bank for a Dem who is trying to defeat a Rep for a congressional seat in central CA. We are working to boost name recognition and motivate folks to vote.

We will be Phone Banking into Kentucky next week.

Our Democratic office opens on Labor Day so we can move from peoples homes to the office.

We don’t have as many volunteers as we did in 2012, and I am not sure what to do about that. We will do some recruitment calling but I am not sure if this is just summer dulldrums, if Dems aren’t motivated, if they are discouraged, or if the rush will come in the next few weeks. I am hoping folks will get more fired up once kids are in school.

    You might recall this…

Well, water cannon lady (Rosemary Church) was gone last night. New anchor in her place.

  27. August 21, 2014 at 1:55 pm

I met a very nice lady this week my daughter hired to clean her house. I was at her house to let the newly employed cleaning lady in while my daughter and her husband were in the hospital with my brand new granddaughter. That birth is a story in itself. The lady and I had a long visit while she cleaned. It included my story of going to the 2008 Inauguration and what a special memory it was for me. She said all she hears is how bad this President is. That comment had me pointing out how much he has done to help the regular people vs the 1%, the GOP obstruction and talking points, the stats on actual party spending under the Dem and Repub administrations, the failure of the media to do real reporting and the need of the people to vote for Democratic candidates and write and email their constituents. She asked if I thought it would get better when this President was gone. I said “No if we vote for them it would be giving our consent or rewarding their behavior. If they get away with it by people not voting or voting for them in hopes the fighting will end we will just get the agenda that brought us to near collapse.”
Convert one person at a time! Been away busy with the birth and am catching up with you!

Disaster porn is what happens when journalists make the story about themselves. Time for most of the crews and cameras to leave for a bit.
I understand they will want to cover Michael Brown’s memorial service on Monday.

some journalists have HUGE egos which is a shame because most are pretty decent. It shouldn’t be about the reporter and their desire to make themselves famous, but about the story and the very real people in it.

Hmmm…been saying this from day one. I’ve been unimpressed with these journalists who found themselves in Ferguson and have been making themselves the story. For them it’s an exciting game and also ratings getter for their respective shows, which are otherwise bland and uninformative as hell.

Thanks Chips. That was a great read. I don’t blame him. But hopefully, Al Jaazera will go back and do an indepth piece on this whole thing.

“A three-page letter that was sent to German parliamentarians on August 18 makes sober reading.

Ostensibly, the letter is about how Europe’s sanctions against Russia and vice versa might affect the German economy. But the real message that Sigmar Gabriel, Social Democrat leader and minister for economic affairs and energy, Wolfgang Schäuble, federal minister of finance, and Christian Schmidt, food and agriculture minister, want to get across is that Germany’s special relationship with Russia is all but over.

It’s not as if Chancellor Angela Merkel—who will travel to Kiev on August 23—and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier haven’t worked endlessly with Russia to seek some diplomatic solution over ending the Ukraine crisis.

But time and again, President Vladimir Putin has spurned their efforts. In doing so, Putin is turning his back on Germany’s decades-old Ostpolitik in which successive German governments tried to integrate Russia into the West’s system of political, economic, and social values. He has also effectively turned his back on his greatest supporter in Europe. Ostpolitik has run its course.”

It’s catch-22: you can’t bomb them out of existence – that’s a recruitment tool. You can’t sit back and do nothing while the current nutjobs are executing their own people and others.

What the hell is anyone supposed to do?

Actually, I wonder first of all how accurate that is. But more importantly is just how many new people are coming in to join them. I still think that if there continues to be a strong push against them, specially with condemnations coming from other Sunni countries, the support will start to waiver.

Sorry but Engel (along with his MSM buddies), is a warmonger. His having this job literally requires a prolonged war, so I would take his words with the appropriate amount of salt.

‘Engel (along with his MSM buddies), is a warmonger. His having this job literally requires a prolonged war,’

Geesh, Hopef, it sure took my administrative assistant a while to get my reaction out there! I was wondering if I had to jump in and express my views myself! Were you having a business lunch? 😉 😉

I have been turned off by Engel’s stance for a few years now, and though I no longer listen to him, I admit I cringe whenever I see he’s home and NBC has him on to pontificate.

Hmm? So Gingrich had a meeting on Jan 20th, 2009 with 18 others plotting a political coup d’etat against a newly sworn president for Not being Reagan? An actor and one with health issues? Hmm? Reagan was shot on March 31st 1981. Reagan had Tip O’Neill. Reagan had a senate that knew that US came 1st. Reagan sold arms to Iran. Invaded Grenada and US lost 241 Marines in Lebanon.
Oh, the Elephant in the Room. Reagan didn’t have the pigmentation defect? Is that it Gingrich?

If I were advising them…..I would say: If you must do it, wear your everyday attire. Wearing all black clothes or any uniform makes it as a form of Militia like those in camouflage motifs in NV and elsewhere.

I say let them wear black, those fuckers in Nevada weren’t told what color to wear nor did anyone do anything to them even AFTER they pointed their weapons at law enforcement.

    Breaking : CNN

Wilson did NOT have an ” Orbital Fracture to his Eye Socket ” Another LIE from Wilson’s ” friends ”

He did go to the hospital for a ” swollen face ” but x-rays indicated NO FRACTURE.

So…according to CNN his swollen face proves there was ” a scuffle “…..( um…no it doesn’t…he could have hit his face rushing to get out of the vehicle ) There is no mention as to which side of his face was swollen.

      August 21, 2014 at 3:54 pm

CNN and others Knew this….remember the cell video, that killer cop Wilson, was there. Pink face with a heavy eye socket punch would be purple and bruised in minutes.

      Logical. Fact of life.

Just to keep muddling the waters, CNN and their corrupt friends in the media, as usual, would flip over backwards to generate a sympathetic both sides meme to help further the division in US. The media used to be Just the Facts. Today, it is, Just the both sides memes when it is about justice, women, people of color, Dems or pres Obama.

    • August 21, 2014 at 4:17 pm

his face could have been swollen prior to even coming across Mike Brown…there is no way to prove when he got the so called swollen face

Apparently $100,000 was raised for Darren Wilson. Sickening. The Browns, who have lost their son, deserve more than that just for their pain. Not to mention all the folks who have been injured thanks to bullying police.
