Rise and Shine – And Chat On

On This Day: President Barack Obama and daughter Sasha swim at Alligator Point in Panama City Beach, Fla., Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010. The President traveled to Panama City Beach with First Lady Michelle Obama and Sasha to meet with local business owners and officials and to encourage Americans to travel to the Gulf Coast beaches (Photo by Pete Souza)

Morning again everyone – wow, the beauty of this photo is some contrast to the horror of Ferguson.

Chat on.

Putin got played by the master. It’s going to hurt even more….

The Kremlin’s worst clash with the West since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union has accelerated the outflow of two of Russia’s most prized assets: money and brains.

Vladimir Putin’s annexation of Crimea and support for rebels accused of shooting down a passenger plane over Ukraine then hindering the recovery of the 298 bodies have shredded Western hopes of a lasting alliance with Moscow.

Sanctioned by the United States and European Union, Putin’s courtiers are under fire, Russia’s $2 trillion economy is threatened with isolation and millions of Russians across the world are wondering what next.

Russia is still earning much-needed revenues from pipelines carrying oil and gas to the West, but, less happily for the Kremlin, capital and talent are flowing in the same direction.

Russia’s Economy Ministry is forecasting $100 billion in capital outflows for this year, up from $61 billion in 2013, but that looks optimistic. Indeed some think that figure has already been exceeded.

“Somewhere between $100 billion and $200 billion of capital flight has taken place,” said U.S. President Barack Obama on Aug. 6.

European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said back in May that the crisis had prompted “very significant outflows that have been estimated by some to be in the order of 160 billion euro ($214 billion) out of Russia”.

Even economists from Moscow’s Higher School of Economics forecast outflows could total $130-$150 billion this year.

And it will get worse, according to a senior Western banker.

    That’s a BIG FU, Pootie:)

ty HF….GM to you as well

i was thinking about the ratios in Ferguson….the ratios of the elected officials to the general populace….67% of the town is Black…yet 94-96% of the police force is white…..i do not know if there are any black folks in the towns elected positions….if there isn’t one has to wonder why this is…..

it appears that things have been simmering in Ferguson for a while….after the dust clears…and the spotlight is gone….what happens then…

I hope the people of Ferguson and their civic & church leaders plot a political path…

Obamas and Clintons Celebrate at Farm Neck Birthday Party
    9 hours 37 min ago

President Barack Obama, the First Lady, former president Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were all on hand for Ann Jordan’s 80th birthday party Wednesday night at Farm Neck Golf Club in Oak Bluffs.

The party was thrown by Mrs. Jordan’s husband, Vernon Jordan. The couple are longtime Vineyard visitors.

Press were not allowed at the party, but the White House released a statement after the party about the event. There were about 150 guests, the White House said. The Obamas sat with the Clintons, Mr. and Mrs. Jordan, Valerie Jarrett and her mother Barbara Bowman, Xerox chief executive officer Ursula Burns and chief executive officer of American Express Kenneth Chenault and his wife Kathy.

“The President and First Lady have known the Jordans for over 20 years, and were grateful to have been able to share this special evening with them,” the statement by deputy press secretary Eric Schultz said.

Anonymous Outs Officer In Michael Brown Shooting

Anonymous has named the Ferguson, MO police officer who they allege shot Michael Brown in an incident that has triggered nearly a week of protests. They are threatening to release additional information about the officer unless the Ferguson police department responds.

  19. 64 Loriah
    August 14, 2014 at 10:00 am

That photo is of police patrolling the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, in the wake of a night of riots and looting in the wake of the shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown by a white cop. In that suburb of St. Louis, the population is 67% black, but there are only 3 black cops on the 53 person police force, with 2 other non-whites). What’s fascinating about the picture is that the front line of five officers (two from other areas, no doubt) is all black while behind them are roughly a dozen and a half white cops and not a single other non-white one. (Side note: Has anyone written about GOP opposition to Obama as a symbolic castration and its effect on blacks in this country?)

And that’s the problem, isn’t it? It’s that no matter where black men turn, there are always white men with guns right behind them, whether it’s asshole cops or asshole gun owners. No matter if there’s a black man in the White House; there’s always a power structure founded on and fostered by whiteness that exists with little challenge. – See more at: http://rudepundit.blogspot.com/2014/08/were-lucky-there-arent-more-riots.html#sthash.k3RVZ71y.dpuf

Why are Ferguson cops so completely out of control?

…Why is this happening? I’ve seen a lot of people point out, correctly, that the most baffling thing about this is that the cops are dumb, dumb, dumb. The sad fact of the matter is that if they had allowed the protests to happen peacefully and not met the protesters with a bunch of loaded guns stuck in their faces, this story would have likely died down, especially with Iraq at the front of the news cycle. It’s a depressing fact, but true:

I would agree that the response from the St Louis County and Ferguson PD had similarities to Israel’s actions in Gaza. I just hope this is a satirical post thought up by the Onion and not reality.

    • August 14, 2014 at 11:03 am

By no means defending St. Louis County police department, but this press release is from three years ago.

Serious question: how many counties in the US have their own police department?

The reason why we’re looking to @GovJayNixon for action was expressed by japa21 on the Early Bird thread… there are three different police forces involved in this action, so no one is in charge (i.e., no chain of command).

      • August 14, 2014 at 11:20 am

I find it ODD that ANY police force feels the need to go to Israel to receive counter-terrorism training. This is a mindset that we should not tolerate.

In IL, the county police is the ‘sheriff’. There is county law enforcement.

        • August 14, 2014 at 11:26 am

That’s the way it is in CA too.

Have found it odd that the county law enforcement is called “police” in St. Louis county.

Have also said before that counties typically have very weak supervision, if any at all. There might be a County Administrator, but that person is usually in charge of budgets, and a CPA ain’t gonna do squat in this situation.

  40. August 14, 2014 at 11:12 am

I just read the article that taiping1 referenced in the Early Bird Chat. I agree that the article and comments are thoughtful in contrasting in the lives of blacks and whites in America.

My younger years came towards the end of the Civil Rights Movement. Black families were starting to have hope about our future as citizens in this country. I often heard my parents express expectations for a better life for their children, and the belief that this would be the case for each succeeding generation. Even though we were taught that we had to work harder and be twice as good, it was with a conviction that we could still get ahead in life; that we could get closer to or achieve that American Dream.

Many blacks benefitted from the struggles and convictions of our parents and grandparents. We have been able to work and earn incomes that allow us to provide for our families and give our children the opportunity to continue that climb up the economic ladder. There was a point that it was hard to imagine moving back to the time that our ancestors fought and sacrificed to improve. After all, we live in the USA, a country that is strong human and civil rights; right? In fact, many of *our* children or grandchildren have never experienced the bigotry and discrimination of their ancestors – at least not in ways that they recognize(d).

Even though most blacks, at some point, have seen or experienced hidden racism and discrimination, it is disheartening to see the rights and freedoms for which people struggled and sacrificed slowly being taken away. It is even more depressing that the “hidden” has become more blatant. Sadly, we have to understand that what we are seeing is not an overnight occurrence. It has been building to this point for years. Unfortunately, complacency and denial have allowed the hatred and evilness to fester and strengthen such that it is no longer easy to ignore and disclaim its existence [as SCOTUS claimed in its Voting Rights decision].

A black person pays the ultimate price, not because of something that they have done, but simply because of a stigma attached by virtue of being black. Yet, a white person who has UNDENIABLY committed murder – in mass even – is simply arrested and allowed to go through a costly incarceration and court proceeding…
