Joshua Green: Dire Obamacare Prediction Falls Hilariously Flat

The story of Obamacare over the last year has in many ways been a story about how the various claims made by conservatives about why the law would collapse have systematically fallen apart as the Affordable Care Act has gone into effect. The website debacle was so bad that nobody was going to sign up. Actually, lots of people signed up. The net number of people insured was going to go down, not up, because Obamacare would force insurers to cancel their plans.

Nope, the uninsured rate has gone down. One of the scariest claims was that premiums were going to shoot up because only the sick and the old would sign up. Back in March, the Hill published a representative story under the headline, “O-Care Premiums to Skyrocket.” Here we are five months later, and those insurance officials have begun reporting their premium increases for next year. To put it mildly, those increases do not seem to fit the definition of “skyrocketing.”

Wendell Potter: Dire Predictions About Doctor Shortage Post-Obamacare Haven’t Panned Out

Among the many predictions of Obamacare-related catastrophe was that the law, by enabling millions to join the ranks of the insured, would force us all to wait longer to see a doctor and very possibly lead to a code blue for U.S. health care. “Doctor shortage, increased demand could crash health care system,” A CNN report warned last October. A few months earlier, a Forbes headline predicted that, “Thanks to Obamacare, a 20,000 Doctor Shortage Is Set to Quintuple.”To find out if the critics’ were prescient or way off base, Kaiser Health News reporter Phil Galewitz went looking for problems. He didn’t find many. “Five months into the biggest expansion of health coverage in 50 years,” he wrote after interviewing officials from more than two dozen health centers and multi-group practices across the country, “there are few reports of patients facing major delays getting care.”

One reason the system has not been overwhelmed is that, although we might not have as many doctors as some think we should have, we do have a rapidly growing supply of mid-level medical providers — like physician assistants and nurse practitioners — who now treat many of our health problems. It probably won’t be long before most of us are treated — and treated just fine — by a well-trained professional who doesn’t have an M.D. after his or her name. A couple of weeks ago, I sustained an injury that my wife felt was serious enough that I should either go to the ER or see my doctor. When I called my doctor’s office, I was told that while the doctor was on vacation, a nurse practitioner could see me right away. And she did. And I lived to tell about it.

Must Watch!!!…..If it was a transcript you wouldn’t know who said it HRC or President Obama… She tears apart……line by line… her entire critique of President Obama’s Syrian policy with her OWN words:

“We don’t know who it is that would be armed” “We don’t have any clarity on that” “To whom are you delivering them too?” “We see Zawahiri is supporting them, Hamas is supporting them” “Despite the great pleas [of Syrians]…If you are a military planner or SOS……do you have the elements of an opposition that is viable…we don’t see that”

President Obama’s most recent (and also consistently the same arguement he has been making for years) via NYT link provided in tweet below:

“With “respect to Syria,” said the president, the notion that arming the rebels would have made a difference has “always been a fantasy.” This idea that we could provide some light arms or even more sophisticated arms to what was essentially an opposition made up of former doctors, farmers, pharmacists and so forth, and that they were going to be able to battle not only a well-armed state but also a well-armed state backed by Russia, backed by Iran, a battle-hardened Hezbollah, that was never in the cards.” Even now, the president said, the administration has difficulty finding, training and arming a sufficient cadre of secular Syrian rebels: “There’s not as much capacity as you would hope.”

Via Bobfr: Time to close the issue on Ms Clinton once and for all. She will never be a viable candidate and she did it to herself and everyone will remember.

Fine by me….This was the Clinton camp response last night:

      • August 13, 2014 at 6:49 pm

“then fine–maybe she won’t run” yes……the other part was Joshua implying what they really meant, Vicki.

I read the article. Wishful thinking, Clinton camp. We remember you and we don’t like you all that much. We are all hoping for a democratic candiate we can be excited about—-some combination containing, perhaps, Joe Biden, Martin O’Malley, Deval Patrick, Elizabeth Warren, Julian Castro, and a few others.

They’re trying to guilt trip Dems into supporting her. This is childish. HRC and her “allies” need to get out of the way. We have a midterm election to worry about.

Mirzakhani was born and raised in Tehran, Iran’s capital. In 1995, she broke another barrier, when as a high-school student she became the first Iranian to earn a perfect score in the International Mathematics Olympiad. After studying in Iran, Mirzakhani went on to earn her PHD at Harvard University. She currently teaches mathematics at Stanford University in California. Her work primarily focuses on studying geometric structures and deformations….

…On Wednesday, a twitter account associated with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani congratulated Mirzakhani, and shared a photo of her with and without a hijab, the female head covering mandatory in Iran….continued

Maryam Mirzakhani, a professor of mathematics at Stanford, has been awarded the 2014 Fields Medal, the most prestigious honor in mathematics. Mirzakhani is the first woman to win the prize, widely regarded as the “Nobel Prize of mathematics,” since it was established in 1936. “This is a great honor. I will be happy if it encourages young female scientists and mathematicians,” Mirzakhani said. “I am sure there will be many more women winning this kind of award in coming years.”

Officially known as the International Medal for Outstanding Discoveries in Mathematics, the Fields Medal will be presented by the International Mathematical Union on Aug. 13 at the International Congress of Mathematicians, held this year in Seoul, South Korea. Mirzakhani is the first Stanford recipient to win this honor since Paul Cohen in 1966. The award recognizes Mirzakhani’s sophisticated and highly original contributions to the fields of geometry and dynamical systems, particularly in understanding the symmetry of curved surfaces, such as spheres, the surfaces of doughnuts and of hyperbolic objects. Although her work is considered “pure mathematics” and is mostly theoretical, it has implications for physics and quantum field theory….continued via Standford

He could have easily asked why in 2014 hasn’t the city of Ferguson gotten rid of their racist PD, but instead he chose to scapegoat the victims…it’s the COPS who need to go, not the residents.

Nerdy, this is a terrific post and it is the big truth we’ve all been talking about.
GOP has nothing. They are stunned into silence. Unless you count vacation drivel and the Clinton fracas.

In 2010 the TP/GOP was so loud, overwhelming. Now, as hopefruit and I have been discussing (HF, detailed answer to you 2 threads back now) you can barely hear a peep about the primaries that have been going on.
Not only is the GOP Wave not going to happen. I think Bobs Landslidedems2014 will be very satisfying.

FERGUSON, Mo — David Hoech was the last, and most unexpected, protester of the night. The 74-year-old Vietnam veteran drove 60 miles to Ferguson where for the last three days unrest has gripped the town following Michael Brown’s killing by a cop. Hoech approached the line of police and SWAT vehicles in his sedan late Tuesday, turned around, and parked. When he opened the door, he leaned on his oxygen tank as police shone a spotlight on him. He walked across West Florissant Avenue, recently vacated by a large, boisterous, yet peaceful crowd that told police “We are Mike Brown.”

David Hoech also had something to say: “The only thing that matters in all of this is that mother who lost her son,” he said not far from the police line. “I want to give her a hug and tell her I love her. I have four kids and eight grandkids and I haven’t had to bury any one of them. What she’s going through must be terrible.”….

…“I came out here to say what’s right and what’s wrong, and this is wrong,” Sharon Whitaker said. The 57-year-old Gulf War veteran at one point knelt on the pavement in front of police, who were in a protective position behind two SWAT trucks. “We got to watch these kids die and it don’t make no sense. Just because they live in a certain neighborhood doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have a chance.”

Brown’s chance is a well-remembered memory here. He was to attend college on Monday but instead, as attorney Benjamin Crump noted at a press conference with Sharpton, Brown’s family was preparing for a funeral. The family has secured the services of Crump, who represented Trayvon Martin’s family. Brown has taken on legendary status in Ferguson, as the spray paint marking the spot where he died indicates. “I am legend,” it reads. While many are focused on seeking justice for Brown’s death, some, like Hoech, have said they want only healing and the mending of a community torn apart by the events of the past few days. “I want to go back there and talk to the people,” Hoech told officers at the police line, eventually succeeding and becoming the only person allowed through all night. “This is America. I can go where I want to go. And if you’re going to shoot my ass, go ahead and shoot me.”

Was alarmed when I first saw this headline today—-that 94,000 Florida Obamacare enrollees (out of 1 million) may lose their policies. Notices have been sent to 94,000 that they must provide proof of citizenship and immigration status by the first week of Sept. or they will lose their policies. These are people who have inconsistencies in their paperwork. But the expectation is that most of these “inconsistencies” are due to flawed/incomplete data entries.

    • August 13, 2014 at 8:19 pm

Yeah, I heard this hyped early this morning on CBS radio news, but then nothing the rest of the day.

Sounds like it affects people who signed up on the federal site who need to provide supporting documentation — which is par for the course when you’re filing online — proof is needed that you’re not pranking the site.

Their response is disproportionate to our constitutional right for freedom of assembly.

Drives me nuts that national MSM continue to report this from a “OMG, there’s looting in Missouri” perspective and gloss over the fact that an unarmed teen was murdered by #Ferguson PD.

I was a bit hopeful yesterday when CBS radio news reported the death of a teen, but for some reason today they’ve reverted back to calling Michael Brown a “man” (without mentioning his name — I think that’s another way national MSM is dehumanizing this atrocity).

I have heard this kind of talk before, but when this President fight for higher wages it’s for blacks too, when he fight for health insurance it’s for blacks too, when he fight for affordable education it’s for blacks too, when he fight for jobs bill it will be for blacks too. I mean what do you want him to do, place these things in your lap, you have to get out there and do something. Don’t sit back counting on the first black President to do it for you.
