ObamaCare: Helping Medicare Function Efficiently

Sara Kliff: The Amazing News Buried Inside A 283-Page Medicare Report

This is arguably the most unexpected piece of news in the new Medicare Trustees report: the government’s hospital insurance program might be spending less money to cover more beneficiaries than it did a year ago. Medicare’s hospital insurance program — known to wonks as Medicare Part A — spent $266.8 billion covering 50.3 million people in 2012. In 2013, the the same program spent $266.2 billion to cover 51.9 million people. what’s definitely clear — and what’s driving this trend — is that Medicare is spending significantly less per person than they did two years ago.

And this report expects that trend to continue for another two years going forward. By 2015, the Medicare Trustees’ Report projects that the program will spend less per person on hospital care than it did in 2008. This doesn’t happen much in health care: not just slower growth, but the actual dollar amount spent on a given type of care dropping. The Affordable Care Act, for example, penalizes preventable readmissions — times when seniors turn up at the hospital a second time after something goes wrong during their first visit. Readmissions have been falling pretty steadily for the last few years, and those reductions could be showing up in the lower per-person spending.

So I see that Nancy Pelosi (@aka Nancy Smash!) has finally had her fill of watching the Republicans destroy her House and her country. She interrupted Tom Marino in the midst of him spewing a lot of lies while commenting on the border supplemental. According to his tweet she called him an ‘insignificant person’ which is probably only the honest truth. (The article is spun negatively). Nancy, I deeply, deeply feel your pain after watching 4 years of Boehner’s cowardly, incompetent leadership and the Republicans’ nihilistic attacks on our country.

I feel really excited about the Africa Summit. Because of The Economist interview of President Obama and piece about him in Bloomberg, it’s the first time I’ve really felt I had an understanding of his vision and the possibilities of the meeting. I will be very interested to follow along and learn more. Very hopeful. I posted them in comments when I first found them, but for those that didn’t see it, they are VERY worth reading.

This is some good news from Africa about elephants. A couple of billionaires have been in the news doing good recently too. Billionaire climate-change activist Tom Steyer pledges to spend big in support of Charlie Crist to beat Florida Gov. Rick Scott. In Botswana:

….Elephants Without Borders, a Botswana-based group, is leading what it describes as the biggest continent-wide, aerial census of elephants since the 1970s with funding from Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Paul Allen. The goal is to use the data to better marshal conservation efforts across Africa, said Mike Chase, the group’s director…

It’s hard to counter something when nothing specific is provided. They could as easily say PBO beats up FLOTUS daily. Respond by saying “no he doesn’t” and they’ll just say “prove it”, which you can’t (other than the fact they aren’t together EVERY night.

The only thing you mother can say is that unless they provide some evidence to back up what they are saying, she will treat the claim with all the respect it deserves, and then she whips out a roll of toilet paper.

                  August 4, 2014 at 3:48 pm

                  Here is the Wiki

Overpopulation was an early concern and interest. In a 1969 article, Holdren and co-author Paul R. Ehrlich argued, “if the population control measures are not initiated immediately, and effectively, all the technology man can bring to bear will not fend off the misery to come.”[28] In 1973, Holdren encouraged a decline in fertility to well below replacement in the United States, because “210 million now is too many and 280 million in 2040 is likely to be much too many.”[29] In 1977, Paul R. Ehrlich, Anne H. Ehrlich, and Holdren co-authored the textbook Ecoscience: Population, Resources, Environment; they discussed the possible role of a wide variety of means to address overpopulation.[20][30][31]

Note that this was when he was 26 working on his PhD. And it is hardly talking about killing off anybody.

Have your mother demand they show evidence of him saying anything about killing off people.

Al Qaeda interesting considering that Bush enabled it to happen by ignoring the warnings. Al Qaeda is a dangerous organization that wants to destroy the united states, but they were also heavily funded by the United States via Bush Senior.

I don’t know what you are talking about. This has nothing to do with Israel or human shields. This is about Snowden releasing classified information and his supporters said it didn’t make a difference to terrorists. This article has nothing to do with Israel.

Jeff, this is a very serious matter relevant to our national security and for you to simply dismiss this is highly problematic IMO. The I/P issue is separate and our National security should not be conflated with your concerns for what is going on in Gaza. I don’t know why you think that Snowden surveillance leaks are not important. They are very important.

I’m asking for your help with a red to BLUE district. I want so much to give Pres Obama the Democratically controlled House and Senate he deserves.

I live in a red state in a very red district and don’t have a viable Democratic candidate to work for. I joined the orange site in 2009 and didn’t participate much, but I want to make a difference in a red to BLUE race we can win. My name there is ParkRanger and I’m writing about WA-08, an R+1 district that Pres. Obama won twice. The Democrat running is Jason Ritchie, he is a supporter of Pres. Obama and liberal on all of the issues. He’s running a very smart campaign with passionate, positive dedicated people volunteering. Their primary is tomorrow and WA-08 has the highest rate of voting in WA due to their efforts — all on a shoestring budget. The 5-term incumbent is backed by big GOP money and big corporations. I am very impressed and enthusiastic about Jason.

Here’s how you can help: Mayday PAC raises money for citizens and will back 5 candidates who support campaign finance reform. You can nominate Jason to Mayday PAC! I’m not sure how much they will give but I think it would be over a million. I really believe Jason can win this, but he needs money to knock off the Republican and this would be a game changing difference. I would also ask you to join me in donating to his campaign. I can only donate a small amount, but together we make a big difference. Thanks for listening! I’m going to be leaving and hope to be back later tonight. Have a wonderful day everyone and Happy Birthday to our much loved President.

‘And so one thing you should learn is if somebody is being constructive in their criticism, usually they’re not criticizing you, they’re criticizing your actions and what you do, and are giving you something specific. So if a coach is coaching Chris and just says, you’re a buster, you can’t play — that’s not constructive criticism. If they say, Chris, right now you’re dribbling too much and you need to move the ball around because then five guys are going to touch it and we’ll have more motion — that becomes constructive criticism.

Well, that’s true in your lives as well. So you can usually tell — if somebody is being constructive, they’re telling you something specific that you can change, that you can test to see if it’s going to make things better. And if they can’t, if all they’re saying is you’re not worth nothing, then that’s probably not something that you want to pay a lot of attention to.’

The President laid out a three-pronged approach to determining whether or not someone is providing constructive criticism:

Does it advance a common goal?
Is it a criticism of what you do or who you are?
Does it include a suggestion for how to improve?

“We’ve focused on solutions to rein in big government, and help grow our economy,” Mr. Walden said in the weekly Republican address. “The House has passed more than 40 jobs bills, but the president and his party refuse to give them a hearing.”
This is clearly one of the House GOP’s favorite talking points, but it’s simply impossible to take the claim seriously. Walden may not have checked this list of “more than 40 jobs bills” lately, but I’ve actually read it. The list of “jobs bills” includes the Farm Bill. And a budget blueprint. And a measure to increase federal spending “transparency.” And a framework on cybersecurity.

No fair-minded person could credibly present these measures as actual “jobs bills” with a straight face.

So why boast about jobs bills that aren’t actually jobs bills? For the same reason these House Republicans approved legislation to address the border crisis that doesn’t actually address the boarder crisis: messaging trumps governing.

Read the whole thing…and if any of you find your way to your Republican congresspersons town hall….crush them like goo!

    • 96 desertflower
      August 4, 2014 at 4:17 pm

      Pare that. with this: http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/has-boehner-read-his-list-jobs-bills

“The House is listening to the American people and passing jobs bill after jobs bill. There is a list of about 40 on Speaker.gov.”
I’m curious if Boehner has actually looked at the list. He should – it doesn’t say what he thinks it says.

Last fall, the Speaker pushed a similar talking point, in reference to a separate list, but Boehner and his team have since come up with a more comprehensive, color-coded list, which is worth appreciating in detail because it speaks volumes about Republican priorities and definitions.

Right off the bat, note that there are, in fact, 46 measures on the list of “jobs bills” already approved by the House. But the list includes six bills that have either been signed into law or endorsed by President Obama. When Boehner insisted that “Washington Democrats” have “ignored” all of the bills on the list, that wasn’t entirely true.

But of the remaining 40 “jobs bills” on the list, very few can credibly be described as actual jobs bills.

For example, the first 14 bills on the list of 40 – more than a third of the overall list – are giveaways to the oil and gas industries. The bills expand drilling, expand fracking, expand pipelines, expand mining, expands coal-ash projects, and “protect” coal plants. How many jobs would this collection of energy bills actually create? The heralded list from the Speaker’s office didn’t say, but the total would likely be pretty modest.

Boehner can prove me wrong by getting an independent score on the collection of bills, but I have a hunch if all of these bills were combined into one package, they still wouldn’t produce as many jobs as extended unemployment benefits. Besides, the point of these bills is to help polluters, ExxonMobil, and energy companies. We can debate such efforts on the merits, but to consider every giveaway to Big OIl a “jobs bill” is hard to take seriously.

I found this in the new “My Front Porch” section of WH.GOV. It was posted on July 25, and includes a report on Sec. Perez’ day with Mr. Richardson and a ‘data jam’ with business leaders.

Deric Richardson had been out of work for over a year. He had a GED and a Microsoft Office certificate, but needed an opportunity to improve his skills. That opportunity came in the form of tuition-free training in laboratory skills provided by the nonprofit BioTechnical Institute of Maryland. Shortly after successfully completing the training, Deric was hired by Baltimore-based Paragon Bioservices in July 2010.

Today, Secretary of Labor Tom Perez is traveling to Baltimore to meet with him.

Deric’s story is just one great example of how job-driven training is working for Americans across the country. When we talk about “job-driven” training, we’re talking about making sure we’re providing people with the skills that employers are looking for right now to fill available jobs. Earlier this week, President Obama signed the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, which will elevate more job-driven programs like BTI.

This is the second in a series of “day in the life” trips Secretary Perez — in addition to other secretaries across the President’s cabinet — will be taking over the next few months. It’s a chance to talk directly with the people the Labor Department works for every day.

We want to make sure you see what he sees, too. Follow along today to see live updates and highlights from Secretary Perez’s day.
