Early Bird Chat

On This Day – Pete Souza: “The President talks with the six-year-old son of departing staff member David Vandivier just outside the Oval Office. The youngster had just inquired how old the President was going to be in a few days (the President’s birthday is Aug. 4). ’52,’ the President replied. ‘Whoa!’ said the six-year-old.” Aug. 1, 2013

Here’s the difference, AMK. The mean girl on the left is younger than the mean girl on the right and has better lip gloss than the thin-lipped Coulter. The mean girl on the left sneers her way through daily morning shows with a lot of sententious looking old white men (I see that curled lip on the blessedly muted screens in the gym). Fortunately Ann Coulter doesn’t get as much tv screen time, so I can proudly say I never see her image. They are both paid a lot to stir up bigotry and racial animosity. So there you have it.

Morning. When you wake up to Republican antics, you wake up to Looney Tunes Land. The question isn’t what is happening in the world today? It’s what insanely inhumane, hate-filled, anti-American sabotage is the GOP up to today. Nothing–no matter how obscene, bigoted and stupid–surprises me anymore. I couldn’t be more grateful for this place of sanity.

      amk,

Finally got a new computer last month, but now I am unable to copy a URL from Word to the Internet (doesn’t work for either IE or Chrome) — I think it’s a problem with Word’s clipboard.

I asked a question on MSFT forum and the response I got was to right-click on the URL in Word — but it doesn’t give me the option to “copy,” only to paste — and this was when I just turned on my computer, and had not copied anything to the clipboard.

I also changed the advanced option in Word to “keep text only” when pasting from other programs.

Do you have any ideas on how to get my !@C^##& clipboard to work in Word? (No problem copying URL from Excel.)

      • 24 amk for obama
        August 1, 2014 at 8:27 am

First, when you have a link in the word file, it has to be active. Hit enter after you pasted the link in the word file. It will turn blue with an underline.

Once the link is active, then you click ‘open hyperlink’ and the page will open in your default browser.

        • 25 arapaho415
          August 1, 2014 at 8:41 am

Thanks for the response (much faster than MSFT forum, which took about 24 hours).

My Word links are blue, but nothing happens when I click on “Open hyperlink.”

This gives me something to go on, so let me do some testing in Word.

          Thanks!

which version of word are you using? I use only 2003 since 2007 and 2010 are teh suck.

Have you set your default browser?

              August 1, 2014 at 9:43 am

I was one of the XP holdouts, but my 8 year old computer is barely functioning, hence new computer.

I’ve got Word 2013 — downloaded from MSFT, paid for at Best Buy. I’m wondering if I can download my old Office 2003 from a CD to this computer (no CD drive, external CD reader), but I think I would muck up my new computer forever.

My default browser is IE11. I use Google Chrome only for sites that IE can’t handle, such as T-Mobile (IE screen freezes and flashes when I attempt to use T-Mobile site).

Bizarrely, clicking on “open hyperlink” in a Word document works when the URL is a MSFT, but not any other (e.g., TOD, twitter, etc.).

                August 1, 2014 at 9:47 am

2013 ??? oh boy. Have no idea what other fuckups m$ has done to that ‘product’. I suggest firefox or chrome as your default browser. I stopped IE at their version 6.0 or some such shite.

                  August 1, 2014 at 9:53 am

Wish I had asked you before I downloaded 2013 Office — I have no idea how to “undo” a download — the apps are in the “cloud” not on my hard drive.

Chrome won’t help because the problem is with Word. When I try to paste a URL from Word to Chrome nothing happens.

                    August 1, 2014 at 9:58 am

from where did you get the links for the word file anyway? I avoid using links in my letters and reports. See if there is an icon called permissions in the word. May be your links are protected by the sender.

                    • 31 arapaho415
                      August 1, 2014 at 10:13 am

The links are just references for me, not for professional use.

Links are to TOD, twitter, newspaper sites, etc., nothing funky or obscure.

Where would permissions be? I find it hard to find most everything in Windows 8. MSFT wanted a “clean” interface for users, which means almost everything is hidden. Their designers put beauty ahead of functionality, IMHO.

                      August 1, 2014 at 10:18 am

you don’t need to store your links in your word file. you can just use favorites/bookmarks function in your browser by clicking add to favorites/bookmark this page buttons in the browser.

yes, 2003 was their user friendly crap. rest were all bs.

                      Favorites/bookmarks don’t work for me.

I can never locate them. I have bookmarked a couple of sites on my new computer but there’s not enough detail to know why the heck I favorited the site.

                      Thanks for your help, though.

This is why grumpy old men (and women) are the way that they are. Changing stuff that worked into complicated obstacles for users is time-wastingly frustrating.

    Happy August and Friday everyone.

This is what America represents to other countries. Brought tears to my eyes, yet GOP clamor for stagnant culture. If it were up to the “I want America back” nutters, we’d all be feasting on bangers and mash and dancing the polka — no rock ‘n roll, rhythm & blues, jazz, etc. (no offense to northern Europeans, but diversity makes life interesting):

Uganda’s Constitutional Court has annulled tough anti-gay legislation signed into law in February.

It ruled that the bill was passed by MPs in December without the requisite quorum and was therefore illegal.

Homosexual acts were already illegal, but the new law allowed for life imprisonment for “aggravated homosexuality” and banned the “promotion of homosexuality”.

Several donors have cut aid to Uganda since the law was adopted.

Much better than expected. May and June revised UP by 15,000 jobs.
Plus and this is a big plus the participation rate improved slightly as well. The participation rate is what the GOP uses to demean the jobs numbers and in truth it hasn’t improved in some time, BUT this month it went up!!

I commented above on the GOP’s undying efforts to rain on the Economy’s parade.
Again, one way the GOP/MSM trys to take the air out of the balloon when the economic reports are good, is they squeal about “low participation rates.”
Well folks, this month even that measure IMPROVED. Yes, improved.

This, along with #coleslawgate, proves that the MSM is clutching at straws.

They can’t do any better than these trivialities to “prove” their POV.

They’ll be on vacation with Congress this month and will feebly try to undermine Dems whenever they can. Recall yesterday that MSM headlines were about the “House” disarray relating to Immigration Bill, deftly avoiding informing their audience that it was Republicans in chaos. Yet they miss no opportunity to bash “Dems in disarray” — guess they like the alliteration.

I know sometimes we get frustrated when people call him “Obama” instead of President Obama, but many times it’s not out of disrespect. It’s the idea that PBO himself is bigger than the Presidency – to a lot of people, he means more than just “US President” and after 2017, we will see this even more clearly. 🙂
