What an AWESOME story. What a treat to see African American students high lighted in the news in a positive way, and especially academically, an area that they consistently get bad publicity in.

Kudos to Kevan for not allowing his friends to intimidate him, and without trying, he turned them around.

If you’re leading, and no one is following you, then all you’re doing is just walking. He is definitely a leader.

I always tell my students; it’s cool to be smart, emailing this to some parents this weekend.

      Thanks for posting this Dudette.

Exactly Cindy! We don’t see enough of the stories about the kids who are out there doing great things — they’re out there. It’s up to us to spread the word. 🙂

It seems the right is up in arms over public employee union AFSCME’s decision to stop a partnership with the United Negro College Fund over the UNCF’s budding relationship with the Koch brothers. After the UNCF accepted a $25 million donation from the Koch brothers, much of it earmarked to a “Koch Scholars” program with two of five seats on the scholarship committee chosen by the Koch brothers, and the UNCF’s president spoke at the Koch brothers’ annual summit, AFSCME decided to find another partner for its own scholarship program for students of color. To some, this is an OUTRAGE!!!

AFSCME’s decision hinged on a specific policy issue that you might think the UNCF would care about:

In a letter to UNCF president Michael Lomax, AFSCME’s Saunders called the Kochs “the single most prominent funders of efforts to prevent African-Americans from voting.” Lomax’s appearance at the Koch brothers’ annual summit, where they plot conservative strategy – this year’s focus was taking back the Senate in 2014 — was “a betrayal of everything the UNCF stands for.” Members of AFSCME, a union that supports Democrats with money and people power, voted unanimously to back Saunders’ decision at their annual convention in Chicago last week.

Rachel Maddow is ripping the ‘Do Nothing GOP Congress’ right now. This should be required viewing for every American and every reporter and media outlet in the country. She is also interviewing Senator Bernie Sanders. Will post the segment as soon as it is available.

Netanyahu is worse than Putin in my opinion.

      • July 25, 2014 at 9:49 pm

Have to disagree with you on that one, Jeff. Bibi is a local, albeit puerile thug; Putin is an international one who has caused millions of people to suffer and die.

Gaza is a concentration camp. Israel is gleefully killing women and children.

          • July 25, 2014 at 10:50 pm

No argument with those facts, Jeff.

But, Putin dwarfs it by all that he has engineered throughout his Soviet Union and post Soviet Union reign of terror. His actions in Syria, alone, have resulted in way more than 100,000 dead Syrians and more than 10 million displaced Syrians and Iraqis. His actions in Chechnya represent a colossal scale of genocide and destruction. And, I could go on and on.

So, I’m not arguing that Bibi isn’t a genocidal maniac. I’m just trying to offer some perspective, i.e., that he’s a piker compared to Putin.

          Agree with you, Dr. Bob.

Cannot believe Putin is escalating the conflict in Ukraine.

We were concerned about WWIII in February/March. This is far scarier now — plus the haboobs and Siberian sink holes…

“We were concerned about WWIII in February/March. This is far scarier now …”

Yes, Arapaho. He’s a desperate, ruthless, narcissistic murderer and he’s got nukes. It won’t be 1914, if he doesn’t stop or isn’t stopped, internally. What it will be, no one knows.

Still hope they make a movie of her life with Rachel McAdams or Amy Adams in lead role. Would be a great way to employ Native American, Latino and Black actors.

        Hey Jeff,

Have you seen this commercial? Dudette posted this picture earlier, and this was my reply.

Too cute, reminds me of the commercial with the dog sitting with the little girl in the SUV, until the girls says; mom, what is N.E.U.T.E.R?

Dog jumps out of the window and runs like there is no tomorrow.

I’m a nature lover who was obsessed with butterflies as a child.

I knew that Monarch butterflies fed on milkweed plants, but my encyclopedia seemed to indicate that these plants grew elsewhere than SoCal.

Sorry about the focus, it’s overcast and I blurry is the usual state of my pics.

I think this guy was born from an egg laid at the local Armstrong nursery (going there tomorrow for a cacti & succulent presentation) because that nursery has lots of Monarchs and honey bees.

Can’t wait for the little guy to become a chrysalis (hope there’s something remaining of the plant until then).

Who in the world came up with this list for the 2016 DNC?????

    Birmingham, Alabama
    Brooklyn, N.Y.
    Columbus, Ohio
    Philadelphia, PA
    Phoenix, AZ

I just don’t get the Dem advantage of these choices.

    • July 25, 2014 at 10:37 pm

meta, I can think of several reasons why each of those sites are being considered, but must say that I really dig the notion of Birmingham, Alabama – in the context of ‘Third Reconstruction’ and the destroying the GOP’s ‘southern strategy’ once and for all!!

      #TrustBarack

      • July 25, 2014 at 10:46 pm

Maybe you’re seeing some sort of renaissance, but Alabama hasn’t voted for a Democrat presidential candidate since 1976!!

        • July 25, 2014 at 11:00 pm

Not disputing the fact that you mention, meta, but I truly think that Rev Dr William Barber has ignited a robust and expanding ‘3rd Reconstruction’ in the South, and I cannot imagine a better place to drive the message that Democrats are the future of ALL Americans than by having the 2016 DNC in the City of MLK’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”

Would be truly poignant and exactly the message that must motivate and guide all our efforts to eradicate inequality in America.

Just my opinion, of course, and I could be completely wrong.

I understand the symbolism of what you’re saying. I guess I’m thinking from a more pragmatic POV, having volunteered at DNC 2008 Denver. Lots and lots and lots of on the ground details are very important to people coming from all over the country to express Democratic ideals.

            We’ll see what happens!

      • July 25, 2014 at 10:52 pm

Except for Brooklyn, these all look like reasonable choices.

I’m with Dr. Bob (again) — Birmingham would be my choice — it’s a patch of blue in a crimson red state, a bright spot in the South.

Pema Levy’s article in Newsweek does a very good job of describing the history of how the Party of Lincoln became the Party of White Racists. Agree with LL that this is a good article to savor, perhaps on Sunday, which for most people is less hectic than the other days of the week.

        • July 25, 2014 at 10:55 pm

So are you saying you consider Alabama a swing state?!

          • July 25, 2014 at 11:07 pm

            No, not at all.

The home of George Wallace and Strom Thurgood will cling to their white supremacy until their last dying breath.

As a symbolic gesture, and with an O’Malley/Patrick ticket, Birmingham could show the nation that it’s not a backwater, that it’s part of the US (they probably feel more neglected than the prairie “fly-over” states).

I hope one of the smaller cities gets the nod (Birmingham or Columbus). Brooklyn’s too hipster (aka swarming with journalists), the traffic is pretty bad in Philly and Phoenix in the summer is way too hot with too many haboobs.

What does everyone make of all this ridiculous impeachment talk? I swear to God..these RWNJ’s are certifiable….sounds like PROJECTION to me!! More waste of time and $$$$$….they better not take the Senate. Honestly, pitchforks might need to come out for real!

    • July 25, 2014 at 10:52 pm

Wish we could see him when he visits the U.S., JO’B. I think he’s a fascinating figure in the church at a time when it is suffering from a huge credibility deficit, to say the least. He brings a good measure of healing, in spirit and in deed.

        July 25, 2014 at 11:16 pm

Oh, I so very much agree, meta. He’s the real deal, and it’s pretty amazing how people like the Pope and our President show up just exactly when we need them.

I too wish we could see him in Philly! Unless he visits your city, then SF it is!

        • July 25, 2014 at 11:21 pm

Well, in any case, I really hope he goes to the WH to see POTUS and family. I think it would be a splendid occasion!

            July 26, 2014 at 1:04 am

I would love that. I’d like to see yet another photo of the Pope and the Prez both breaking out in those “real” grins when they’re meeting, setting the example of how to find common ground, be good natured, and work as “our brother’s keeper.” Truthfully, I’d like to see the Pope be a form of “older mentor” to the President, kind of like a grandfather, although both could equally share a lot with the other.
