      Morning jackieg,
Juan Cole is on to something. Even though the FAA ban has been lifted now the message remains that Israel will pay a price for its crimes and iis vulnerable.
      TY for posting this essay.

…a ceasefire is just the beginning…there can be no Peace without Justice…and there has to be accountability for the deliberate targeting of civilians…

        yes….great article…esp this last part

Israel’s Likud government ought to (but won’t) take the opposite lesson from the airlines’ decision. It is that Israel is vulnerable economically unless it makes peace with the Palestinians by giving up its settler-colonial enterprise. It has to stop sending in squatters on Palestinian land and make preparations for pulling the settlers out.

      GM, HF2.

Somehow media must be shamed into realizing that politics is not a game, its a question of life or death.

They failed to investigate and report on WMDs in Iraq or question how-the-heck-Iraq-is-connected-to-Al-Qaeda and they breathlessly report on the slightest obstacle for ACA — as if this law is the embodiment of President Obama and ignores the fact that this is about medical insurance — about getting treatment for actual diseases and accidents.

Bill R. is right that those who were previously uninsured are soon gonna be saying, “Keep your hands off my ACA.”

I think at this moment Netanyahu wants very badly for President Obama to help him out of this catastrophe he finds himself in. It is one thing for Israel to defend itself against rockets being fired at them, it is quite another thing to try to wipe Gaza off the map.

there has to be an agreement to what Juan Cole says “..makes peace with the Palestinians by giving up its settler-colonial enterprise. It has to stop sending in squatters on Palestinian land and make preparations for pulling the settlers out.”

I would add that Israel has to agree to a 2 state solution and to return to the 1967 borders and that there should be consequences for the deliberate targeting of civilians, esp the children…

and that there should be Penalties for breaking such agreements….

Bringing over Hopefruit’s comment from last night for anyone who missed it (including me) – just reading it now:

So my comment about the media was in reference to the MSNBC’s supposed cancellation of that contributor’s future appearances because she criticized MSNBC’s coverage of the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Then yesterday she was suddenly re-invited to appear on #Inners with Chris Hayes. Well, something about that entire set of events gave me pause, so I was rather tentative in my support. Then there was a red flag with Greenwald’s “attaboy” to Chris Hayes sometime last night after the segment, which prompted me to check out the Twitter TL’s of both Rula Jebreal and Greenwald.

Good for @chrislhayes for putting the fantastic @rulajebreal right back on MSNBC air – watch what she has to say: mediaite.com/tv/msnbc-guest…—
    Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) July 23, 2014

First of all, it appears that Hayes was already covering the conflict quite profusely – AND presenting it in a more balanced way, if not even more from Gaza’s point of view. Prior to last night, Both Greenwald and Jebreal had tweeted approvingly about Hayes’ coverage and views – some of which he articulated on air as early as 2012.

Ongoing good coverage from @chrislhayes on Gaza/Israel continues w/interview with Tariq Khdeir, beaten by Israelis twitter.com/allinwithchris…—
    Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) July 21, 2014

“@sz4truth: @rulajebreal @sz4truth: Chris Hayes Comments on Israel and Palestine Nov. 2012 his words hold true today youtu.be/1VeHIJ0LEA4”—
    Tidiane (@bahmedt) July 12, 2014

So Hayes had already been covering the situation quite adequately, and obviously, from the GAZA standpoint (otherwise GG wouldn’t be so approving). So it’s unclear why he was playing dumb (and pro-Israel) yesterday while talking to Jebreal, knowing fully well that they were already on the same page 100%. I guess it was all part of the game. RATFUCKERY From MSNBC! It appears that they tried to fool people and garner sympathy with this elaborate media stunt featuring a the poor contributor being “dis-invited” to future guest appearances for criticizing the media’s coverage of the Palestinian/Israel conflict. They did this to attract viewers and get ratings for Hayes show. And (as I suspect) to underhandedly get more people annoyed and upset with the Obama’s administration’s approach to dealing with the conflict. Thus they hope to kill two birds with one stone.

If you look down Jebreal and Greenwald’s respective Twitter TL’s, there is absolutely ZERO criticism or negative tweets about The GOP/Republicans. You would think they simply don’t exist. We already know that Greenwald harbors personal hate for our President and it’s evident just by a sampling of his daily tweeting. But Jebreal also retweets pro-Putin stuff from Katrina Nation, Jeremy Schahill, Dan Froomkin, and others. She even retweeted some crap from Greta Van Susteran (FOX NEWS).

.@JillAbramson on Obama WH: “I’ve never dealt w/ an admin where more officials…demand that everything be off the record.” #greta—
    Greta Van Susteren (@gretawire) July 16, 2014

I observed many PBO-supporters were very vocal on Twitter in their support of Jebreal yesterday and last night – but please know that at the end of the day Ms. Jebreal’s so-called criticism of the media is not what you think it is. She is not criticizing the media in general – she’s criticizing the MSNBC’s coverage of the Palestinian-Israel conflict WITH THE VIEW that the government, starting with Barack Obama, has a hand in that one-sided, pro-Israel coverage. And this has been my major concern about this all along. That this is actually another Libertarian movement seizing an opportunity to ratfuck gullible liberals and erode their support for this President under the guise of concern for a particular cause – a seemingly wholesome endeavor that everyone feels ready to latch on to. I’m just advocating for caution. There is a midterm election coming up, and there will be LOTS and LOTS of elablorate ratfucking stunts pulled by these Libertarians to defeat Dems and weaken our President. We need to be more vigilant than ever. We HAVE to be.

On a final note I will say that people who pull these kinds of stunts do NOT help their cause, because they eventually make it about them and their personal beef with particular politicians or governments. They care less about the people who are actually suffering and more about their media coronation and hype. Going forward I will not be retweeting anything from Rula Jebreal, nor will I be watching any show that she’s a guest on. I will assess the Gaza/Israel stuff as I always have – I can think for myself, and I don’t need to latch on to people’s propaganda machines to inform my assessment of a very complex situation.

      July 24, 2014 at 9:07 am

I missed this last night, so thank you for bringing it over. It’s very illuminating and underscores clearly why we always have to be on our guard. The president is doing everything he can to rein in Netanyahu without undermining our ties to Israel, which would be virtually impossible to break at this point. He is walking a very thin tightrope. The very idea that this administration has the ability to “control” media coverage in this country is laughable. If the president pushed for positive pro-Palestine coverage THAT would be the news and there would be fervent and sustained outrage and increased drum beating for Israel. If the Libertarian goal was to get us to think the president had that much influence with the GOP run US media, it didn’t work.

    • July 24, 2014 at 9:11 am

Wow Hopefruit, if I ever need research done, I’m going to hire you!

I don’t know anything about Jebreal at all, although the fact that she appears to be an ally of Greenwald is enough to put me off.

And I don’t watch Hayes any more, he makes my skin crawl, so I can only go by what others say about his coverage of this and other issues.

I just had a look at his Twitter TL yesterday and I saw very little balance on the Gaza issue, it was generally Hamas-slamming stuff, so I’m surprised to hear his master GG is happy with him – but, as I said, I don’t watch him.

But whatever about Jebreal and her general agenda, I do think the whole business between her and MSNBC was useful in that it highlighted the pro-Israel bias of the US media once again, and if it has even the slightest effect of shaming the media in to at least attempting to provide some balance, then that’s probably a good thing.

      Great post Hopefruit, thank you!

        July 24, 2014 at 9:24 am

Thanks Chips – and it was my pleasure…the midterms are coming up so these kinds of distractions from the GOP and Libertarian “left” are par for the course.

        You Said:
// “But whatever about Jebreal and her general agenda, I do think the whole business between her and MSNBC was useful in that it highlighted the pro-Israel bias of the US media once again” //

Yes, and the focus does need to be on the media – even though these Far-lefty Libertarians have been trying to build the argument that somehow PBO is manipulating the media for his own benefit. Yesterday for instance, Greenwald tweeted a very vile, hate-filled comment that NBC is “Obama’s YouTube Channel.” Interpret that comment whichever way you choose – it’s downright nasty all the same.

HF, I was blown away by your brilliant analysis. When I first heard about Rula Jebreal being a guest with Chris Hayes, I immediately thought it was just a cleaver ruse to boost his ratings. I have been all done with Chris Hayes since he moved to the evening slot, but I decided to watch the segment. There was something kinky about this entire episode. Your post was spot on and beyond illuminating. It is a full time job exposing the ‘Blame Obama First’ crowd. What the feckless media and the Far-lefty Libertarians have is common is their contempt for President Obama.

      • July 24, 2014 at 9:27 am

        Agree, Chips.

Those dudebros like Chris Hayes who are BFFs with the likes of Greenwald and Scahill are emoPutins who need to examine why they are on the side of a mass murderer like Putin.

And yes, Hayes is way to jittery and jumpy to watch comfortably.

Although I am angered and horrified at what the right-wing government of Netanyahu is/has been doing, and have always been frustrated at the way our press handles the issue, I have never cared for Rula Jebreal and was very suspect regarding her complaints about MSNBC. She was a frequent guest on Hayes’ UP show and she almost always criticized PBO, interrupted and shouted over other guests, etc. It got so that when I would see she was going to be on UP or some other MSNBC show I wouldn’t watch. In the current situation, she was making it all about herself and her own self promotion, not unlike what Greenwald does. I am not surprised at the tweets/twitter behavior you have highlighted or her friendship with GG. People like her and GG promote certain issues only to get support for their own careers. I prefer to ignore them.

The numbers by the November election will be staggering!!! No matter how many Court decisions or GOP rants there are against Obamacare the country will know who is on their side. Who to vote for to keep our country a fit place to live and raise our families.
The ACA is working exactly as President Obama promised it would—-mouth-to-mouth and a widening ripple of goodness.

The good news just keeps on rolling in – thanks Japa!

Chicago Tribune: U.S. health insurers to pay $330 million in premium rebates

U.S. health insurers will send out about $330 million in rebates to employers and individuals this summer under President Barack Obama’s healthcare law, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said on Thursday.

The law, often called Obamacare, requires insurance companies to refund customers when they spend less than 80 percent or 85 percent of healthcare premiums they collect for medical care.

The rebates will go to about 6.8 million people and have a value of about $80 per family. They are to be sent by Aug. 1 either directly to consumers or to the employer providing the health coverage, who is required to pass the savings onto employees, the agency said in a report.

I also have been dismayed by the transfer of massive amounts of wealth to the richest people in the country, a policy supported over the last 35 years by successive administrations of both parties. Apparently income redistribution downward is dangerously radical, but redistribution upward is just business as usual. The middle class used at least to get lip service from the rich—“backbone of the country” and such. Now it is often treated like a bunch of saps not aware enough to evade their taxes.

The Department of Health and Human Services just announced that those rebate checks will be in the mail shortly.
U.S. health insurers will send out about $330 million in rebates to employers and individuals this summer under President Barack Obama’s healthcare law, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said on Thursday…

The rebates will go to about 6.8 million people and have a value of about $80 per family.

If insurance companies had maintained the 2011 ratio of premiums relative to the cost of medical care, consumers would have spent $3.8 billion more in additional premiums in 2013, the health agency said.
In other words, in 2013 Obamacare saved us all $3.8 billion in premiums via the medical loss ratios. That, my friends, is a BFD!!!

    A BFD, for sure:)
