“The football World Cup is the biggest single sporting event measured by television audience (the Olympics, with multiple sports, is bigger). But how do the actual attendance figures compare? It turns out that a sport which Americans call “football” is considerably larger on a per game and per season basis. The victor in terms of overall popularity is North American baseball, wooing 74m Cracker Jack eaters to the stands each year, four times more than American football. Meanwhile, Indian cricket attracts fewer than 2m spectators annually. As football increases its popularity around the world, its two growth markets are China and America (where it is called soccer). But attendance figures in both countries remains paltry, at 4.5m and 6m respectively. That is between a half and a third of the amount that go to professional football games in European countries each year.”

I’m very surprised that baseball is so popular. I stopped watching it decades ago. I used to love the Blue Jays when I was growing up in Canada.

      • July 14, 2014 at 7:52 pm

I’ve always been an Atlanta Braves fan so the Blue Jays beating us in the world series hurt…..but at that time the Montreal Expos (now the Washington D.C. Nationals) were in our division and one of the most talented teams around (M. Grissom, Alomar bros, Galaraga, P. Martinez, L. Walker, Tim Raines, and my all time fave Vladmir Guerrero……among others.

I was also surprised to see 22 million/yr attend Japanese baseball….. I knew it was big, but not that big!

Base Ball is played 162 times and in bigger stadiums.
NFL has fewer games….16 during the season. 4 pre-games and 3 weeks of play off games.

Basket Ball is played for 80 games or so and with the lowest Squad members.

To me, GWBush’s family represents all that is wrong with inbred political dynasties.

You would think they could think of something greater than themselves, but no….

Good evening and blessings to the “AWESOME” Chipsticks, Dannystix and the TOD Family,

Thank you guys for everything, today, I am much better and I’m grateful to be alive. It was in my quiet time of reflection, that I remembered how my ex-husband brother lost his life. He went to his neighbor’s home because the wife was screaming; tried to encourage the husband to take a walk and cool off, stop beating on the wife. The husband went in the house, got his gun, and came back and killed my ex-husband brother and the wife (he was arrested and charged).

So I am blessed and happy to be alive because this guy could have done the same to the wife, me and security before the police arrived. Thank you guys for “all” the information, and because of it, I feel better in assisting another woman because I have information to give to them. I have knowledge of something that I was not intimately involved with.

There is so much that I didn’t know regarding immigration status and domestic violence. Thank you globalcitizenlinda for posting the information for me. I’ve never experienced anything like this (DV; witnessing a human being beating another helpless life to a bloody pulp), and I pray that I never will.

TOD’s place allows one to come and share their joy, pain, intellectual thoughts, and agree to disagree respectfully. It’s a safe refuge to support the most “AWESOME” President – President Barack H. Obama. It is a place to come to and share our challenges, and ask for prayer; knowing with confidence, that prayer warriors will follow through.

Thank you TOD for your caring hearts, prayers and thoughts. I am doing better because of your caring spirit, and I had the opportunity to talk it through with my Dr. Child unit and my sweet sister who are both 3,000 plus miles away but close in heart.

In prayer and meditation, I’m always asking the Heavenly Father to use me to help others, to be a blessing to someone in need; to represent Him in loving others and being kind to others, to lift up someone who is sad, encourage the one who has a broken heart and or spirit, and pray for those who are being challenged in their dark place, their health and life in general.

With a smile on my face : )

Food for thought; be careful of what you ask for, good chance you will receive it.

Cindy, you say it so beautifully!! This is such a special place. So thankful you are okay and that all the information has been helpful. We need more people to care and be involved but carefully. Prayer and mediation gives us strength. Will keep both you and Anna in my prayers.

Happy Monday mtmarilyn and thank you,

Honestly, it was in my quiet time that I recognized the danger I placed myself in. We never know how we will react to something until it is upon us. Although the young lady is an adult (34 plus, married), when I saw her on the hallway floor screaming and crying (face bloodied), I saw a helpless child who needed a mother’s love; security and protection.

I couldn’t leave because she was someone’s child. In my heart, I was the mother in that moment and danger didn’t cross my mind. So blessed, that the guy didn’t do what so many have done, and continue to do with their guns.

Thank you my friend for your prayers.

But why didn’t President Obama do a photo op at the border? /snark/

t won’t hold my breath waiting for the feckless media to report on this little tidbit 24X7. They are too busy writing puff pieces on Rick ‘Oops” Perry. What an embarrassment? And to think this man ran for president in 2012 and is supposedly gearing up for a run in 2016. The mind reels.

    • July 14, 2014 at 8:00 pm

I saw this story over the weekend…..our President is so cool 😎

……As the president approached, Webb threw his hand down and slapped the counter dramatically. “Equal rights for gay people!”
“Are you gay?” the president asked.

“That’s when he laughed and said, ‘Bump me,'” Webb says. “That’s my favorite part because it was cool to get a joke in. In all the photos [all over the Internet], I look like a dead fish, but it was cool. I do stand-up, so it was nice to have some interaction based on, hopefully, something funny.”

“If Rick Perry would’ve walked in, I would have lost my job. I would’ve taken that old queen to town,” Webb adds. “My mother got to shake hands with Kennedy in Fort Worth that morning he was assassinated, so just for consistency, it was kind of cool to meet with a sitting president. Her picture [is in a] crowd shot in this book called Four Days, so I kind of want to pull the photos next to each other and then wave it in my sister’s face.”……

Lachlan Murdoch’s Ascent to the News Corp Throne
In 2005, Lachlan Murdoch walked away from a worldwide media empire that could have been his. Now, after nearly a decade of exile, power struggles, and near-catastrophic scandals, the firstborn son of Rupert is on the verge of claiming the News Corp. throne.
By Michael Wolff March 27, 2014

From the beginning Rupert waged a campaign to bring Lachlan back into the company. The father held a particular trump card: None of the Murdoch offspring really had any money to speak of. They may have been the children of a billionaire, but they were among the world’s most cash-poor children of a billionaire. Nearly every penny they had was tied up in company shares controlled by the Murdoch Family Trust, which left them with no authority to sell. The Murdoch children were hopelessly dependent on their father—just the way he liked it.

But fate—and family—intervened. Lachlan was not Rupert’s only personal crisis. In 1999 he had divorced his wife of 32 years, Anna Murdoch, and married Wendi Deng, 38 years his junior, engendering the lasting resentment of his children. But as part of the divorce settlement, a canny Anna had agreed to $100 million—not, as California property law entitled her to, half of Murdoch’s then-$8billion fortune. This on-the-cheap divorce was in exchange for Murdoch’s agreement to make the terms of the Murdoch Family Trust unbreakable. Her three children and Murdoch’s oldest daughter, by his first wife, would remain his only heirs.

Then Murdoch had two more children with Deng, who began her own campaign to secure a place for her officially disenfranchised offspring. Caught between a rock and a hard place, Murdoch negotiated.

He needed the agreement of a majority of his four adult children to change the terms of the trust. More than a year of bargaining, and some cold cash, got him part of what he wanted. While his two children with Deng would never become voting participants in the trust, his four older children agreed to share with their new siblings an equal, one-sixth economic interest in it. In return, each of the four was given an immediate $150 million in cash and in company shares that they could sell—enough to buy quite a bit of independence.

    gotta love pierce:

‘ Anybody who hereafter uses the phrase, “Team Of Rivals,” in any sense except the completely ironic needs to be cast into the outer darkness of the Land Beyond Pundits. Fred, of course, knows how to build a Team Of Rivals. While you’re already presiding over the lunatic work of Jennifer Rubin, the gradual transformation of George Effing Will into Alex Jones with a thesaurus, and the shapeless pudding-pop that is Ruth Marcus’s column, you hire a propagandist (Michael Gerson) and a shackle-sniffing torture enthusiast (Mark Thiessen) from out of the most ridiculous cult of personality in American political history to join in. That’s how you build your Team Of Rivals, although it costs you a couple grand to pad the walls. ‘
