Mornin’ 99ts – you have many hours to wait before fireworks in Seattle; it does not get dark enough for the display until around 10:00pm, and it’s only 3:00 now! Yawning already, a 5:30 start makes for a loooonnnggg day!

Come to think of it, that could be a candidate for the July – Picture of the month. What do y’all think?
Here’s the reminder from an earlier post today,

JUST A REMINDER: Picture of the Month

A couple weeks ago ‘the village’ (Well, okay, a few people from the village 🙄 ) decided to start a ‘picture of the month’ file where at the end of the month we choose two pics by (more or less) majority consensus. I volunteered said at the time I’d gladly keep a record of the pics [We, I’m sure, don’t want to add something ELSE to CC’s load] so that at year’s end we can have fun fighting over our pic of the year. We do already have two candidates for the month of June, but I have a vague memory suggesting that we might go backwards for now to cover the months January to May. I think this weekend might be a good time to start the catch-up process.

Now sure yet how best to do this, but here’s my initial thought. When you have a spare moment…..

          1. ✈ ✈…. wrack your mind and remember a picture in the previous months [May -April – March – February – January] that grabbed you by the throat.
          2. ✈ ✈….Search through the TOD archives and locate the pic.
          3. ✈ ✈… Give me the link and I’ll copy the pic into my new ‘Picture of the Year’ file.

If you have a more efficient method (that does not include Chips…no offense CC, simply trying to leave you ‘free’ for now as *YOU* will likely be the one creating the “poll” at year’s end), I’m all ears! Thank you in advance for your submissions.

I have a good memory of a 4th July in DC. I was there as a college student working in the Office of Ecological Environmental Education. A friend and I decided to walk down to the Mall to see the Beach Boys performing. (It was 1970). Along the way we met the daughter of a Greek diplomat. Her family’s presence may have had something to do with the military junta that had just taken over the Greek government. Anyway we walked together, got there, found a good place to sit and proceeded to wait for the Beach Boys to show up. She kept asking us “What do you do to celebrate?” We said, “We watch the Beach Boys and then the fireworks!” She said, “No singing, no dancing?” “Umm, no, pretty much just watching…” Then they announced that the Beach Boys would not be coming but Bob Hope would be there instead. The younger people in the crowd were pretty upset (I remember hearing that the Beach Boys were too controversial…) and being the ’70’s they got pretty vocal. Soon some police fired off tear gas not far from us to ‘control’ the crowd. We saw one boy carried away who had been too close when the cannister went off. Then we decided that maybe this was time for us to leave. So, no singing, no dancing, no Beach Boys, no fireworks, but still — tear gas. Happy 4th of July, Greek diplomats daughter! (It’s really one of my best 4th memories.)

One of your ‘best 4th memories’, or one of the most memorable?

      • July 4, 2014 at 8:07 pm

Well, both really. I remember feeling (and still feel) that the singing and dancing she described and expected would add greatly to our celebrations. That whole internship was quite a high point.

          July 4, 2014 at 8:12 pm

Okay, but you didn’t get them, so that’s why I was puzzled at your ‘best’ description. Anyhoo, your internship was good and you have great long-lasting memories. 🙂 🙂 Happy July 4th, 2014!

          • July 5, 2014 at 5:26 pm

I see your puzzlement and I’m trying to explain it to myself. I guess because it was really different.

Goodness, Maryl, I had forgotten about this convo! 😀 I’m suddenly reminded of the good OLD days when WordP never had the notification and you couldn’t tell if someone had answered you or not unless you tracked back to wherever you had asked a question or made a comment. 😀

              • July 6, 2014 at 12:57 am

Haha! I know I comment or ask questions on other sites and never know if I’ve got a response because I always forget to check.

    • July 4, 2014 at 7:57 pm

Maryl1, that would have been shortly after Kent State, right? I was already in Canada, but things were heating up in the USA.

      • July 4, 2014 at 8:05 pm

Yes, the Kent State shootings happened on May 4th. Things were pretty tense around the country. It was also the first Earth Day. Our office made a gigantic Earth Day flag and spent the day out on the Mall passing out information and chatting and getting sunburned.

        • July 4, 2014 at 8:10 pm

“Tin soldiers and Nixon coming, we’re finally on our own. This summer I hear the drumming, 4 dead in Ohio.” That incredible era was when people took a stand. Too many who could have made a huge difference for The Greater Good copped out and went down the dark path of money and dark power. Too many from our generation chose destruction and violence. But many more chose good and Light, and we have never wavered from sharing good will towards all wherever we have been.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has noted this interesting, universal phenomenon——-all Obama critics are bad spellers. I have 2 such dummies living across the street from me, sadly. The mrs. unit proudly proclaimed on facebook today, “Happy Forth of July! God bless our troups!” Ay yi yi yi yi. One might conclude that this segment of the pop. is just not that bright.
