The final stockpile of Syria’s chemical weapons has been shipped out of the country, according to the OPCW, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. Ahmet Uzumcu, the chief of the international watchdog organization, said the weapons were loaded Monday aboard the Danish ship Ark Futura and departed the Syrian port of Latakia.
“A major landmark has been reached today,” Uzumcu said, qualifying that that meant all “declared” weapons were out of the country.
“We cannot say for sure it has no more chemical weapons,” Uzumcu said. “All we can do is work on the basis of verifying a country’s declarations of what they have. I would not make any speculation to possible remaining assets, substances, chemical weapons. … ” .continued
Just under 9 months ago in October, I addressed you members of the press – in this same place, here in The Hague – to announce the deployment of the first OPCW inspectors to Syria to begin an historic and unprecedented mission. The mission was to destroy the chemical weapons programme of the Syrian Arab Republic.
A major landmark in this mission has been reached today. The last of the remaining chemicals identified for removal from Syria were loaded this afternoon aboard the Danish ship Ark Futura. The ship made its last call at the port of Latakia in what has been a long and patient campaign in support of this international endeavour. Removing the stockpile of precursor and other chemicals has been a fundamental condition in the programme to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons programme.
The next stage in this mission is the completion of the maritime operations to deliver the chemicals for destruction at the assigned facility on board the U.S. vessel Cape Ray and at commercial facilities in Finland, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. The mission to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons programme has been a major undertaking marked by an extraordinary international cooperation…continued
Chips, I’m sooo disappointed in my latino brothers & sisters here. They have blocked a couple of major streets in Huntington Park after Mexico won. So I came here to let my President sooth me and it worked!
Anyone who says they don’t like bacon is lying. I can understand not eating bacon for health or religious reasons, but not because you don’t like it! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Tupac Shakur was still in his mother’s womb when she served as her own lawyer against charges that she and a dozen fellow Black Panthers had conspired to conduct a series of bombings in New York. And as she did so, nobody admired Afeni Shakur more than the supremely insightful and devoutly decent newspaper columnist Murray Kempton. “No man who saw Afeni Shakur in those days could fail to be half in love with her,” Kempton later wrote…..
…“The jauntiness of his bearing was a portent of the long watches of the nights ahead when laughter stops and weeping fills all that’s left; and the last thought was a prayer that the tears ahead will wash him back to the better self that has until now fought the worse one and lost,” Kempton wrote. Tupac did indeed find prison so harrowing that he soon reconsidered his gangsta ways. “In here, I don’t even remember my lyrics,” Shakur was quoted saying. “If thug life is real, then let somebody else represent it, because I’m tired of it.”
Kempton had proven so right in so many ways that he should not have been surprised when Afeni asked him to begin visiting her son in prison and assume a role that struck him as dauntingly improbable. “A father figure,” Kempton told me.
Kempton was, after all, a white Episcopalian of tweedy appearance and intellectual bearing who pedaled about the city on a three-speed bicycle, puffing on a pipe and listening to classical music on his Walkman. “It is scarcely fair of us the aged to judge rap when we have but listened and lost interest too soon to hear it out,” Kempton wrote about hip-hop. “But a fleeting impression suggests that rap has a tendency rather to numb as, for all I know, narcotics might.” Yet, Kempton had clearly discerned the core of Afini’s struggle to save her child from being born in prison when she was 25. There seemed a good chance Kempton could help Tupac through his own struggles now that he found himself in prison at the age of 25….
This is such a beautiful picture. And I just got off the phone with my son. I had today off and he’s called or texted me all day long! I love him so much 🙂
Alycee, I can’t even imagine what it would be like to have a Klan HQ in your neighborhood. These people do not belong in civilization. They need to live on some remote desert where they can howl their hatred at the moon and not disturb decent people with their poison.
In Washington, where attacks get more attention than praise, where defeats generate more comment than victories, were the media thrives on controversy not consensus, it will be easy to note this good news from Syria and quickly move on.
But the significance of this achievement cannot be overstated. Syria had enough chemical agents to kill every man, woman and child in the Middle East. The destruction of these hideous weapons, so quickly and during a war where inspectors came under fire, is nothing short of remarkable.
.
.
The destruction of Syria’s operational chemical arsenal has made all inhabitants of the Middle East safer, including some of our closest allies. It has helped prove that even in the direst of circumstances it is possible to negotiate the elimination of some of the deadliest weapons ever invented.
We should pause for a moment and savor this victory.
I take this personally because I’m the husband of a brilliant woman who struggled to balance work and raising our girls.- President Obama…… Mr. President she has done a fantastic job.
the results are often tragic or very consequential for the person who accidentally discharges their gun and hurts themselves ;

I tried not to laugh when I read the story. But there were so many laughable parts. First and foremost, the expression “accidentally second-amended oneself”. Then, what the heck to carry a loaded weapon near one’s private parts? I don’t want to add that he deserved it. That will be sub-human like the RWN. I prefer to laugh.

@EricBoehlert@eclecticbrotha The poll itself is bullshit. They don't even give race/gender/age demographic breakdown.
Lots to catch up with today. Wow!
CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!
Congrats on 1st!

I am late coming here tonight. Congrats on your goal! Don’t let Germany take it away.

Can’t fault these wimmin’s superb taste.. 🙂 😉
OMG did you hear that scream at the end? That was me all the way from my office. The man is fine!!!!!!!!!!
Alycee, I see Isaac Hayes name and I immediately hear Hot Buttered Soul songs…
This.Brings.Tears.
Moms (mostly all) – there for you when you need them!
What a touchingly beautiful picture. He’s really still a very young man and he’s gone through so much. His mother’s heart must really be full.
Hard getting over the beauty and love in that one.
I wonder how long it took this incredible young man to learn to sleep again. To have his mother so close must be such a gift for them both.
This is such a beautiful picture. And I just got off the phone with my son. I had today off and he’s called or texted me all day long! I love him so much 🙂
Nothing like the comfort of a loved Mama 😉
RWNJ are losing their damn minds!
I’m heartened to see that the sane community members prevailed and shut them down.
Yes; non-violently, through their voices and signs.
Alycee, I can’t even imagine what it would be like to have a Klan HQ in your neighborhood. These people do not belong in civilization. They need to live on some remote desert where they can howl their hatred at the moon and not disturb decent people with their poison.

Oh, that’s funny. All eyes are on him and nobody knows that’s landing in the burrito bowl!

note to self: remember never to read the comments twitter users make on a PBO photo (except if they have been recommended by a trusted source)
Good reminder for all of us, GClinda!
Always post a positive one about President Obama to counter them.
Germaphobe me says “yuck, he’s hanging over the sneeze guard!” lol
He’s got some kind of invisible shield around him, and I hear germs can’t get to him!

The wisdom of the Nobel Peach Prize Committee is remarkable.
Not a time to joke but I’m out of control tonight, Bob, and I know you can take it:
Yes, the Peach Prize Committee is quite Nobel and remarkable.
I need food and sleep …. 😀
Poor baby! And I’m pickin’ on ya.
Go rest. Go eat a peach. Not in that order!
The wisdom of the Noble Peace Prize Committee is remarkable …. my hungry, sleep deprived brain, is not 🙂
Oh yes it is! 🙂
Despite the wording 🙂 – I couldn’t agree more – this is a man of peace – who wants countries to determine their own fate – not have it forced upon them. I believe he should win the prize again – and hope he uses the money to further his own goals – post presidency.
Nothing against dogs, of course. My great grandma just came out!
Of which I speak:
Adorable!
Stunning!
Darryl Issa has called an IRS hearing tonight…it is still going on.
Thanks for the warning. Maybe I’ll wash my hair.
I watched some of it and got disgusted. They are yelling and asking the IRS commissioner why he did not know about something that happened 2yrs before he had the job.
I don’t know what can be done to replicate NC’s Moral Monday rallies to other states
:
Excellent question ….
What is that disgusting Chucky Todd talking about?.
Maybe they’ll all cancel each other out.
The latest Louie Ludwig political ad
Great ad from Louie. As always
But…it is not the Congress…it is the GOP…that CANNOT be said enough….and LOUD enough….
Yes WE Can…AGAIN!
Low Country Boil for dinner tonight. Wow, did that ever hit the spot!
I had to Goggle it and found that it is something that I often eat, but my family and friends here in NE Fla. have never called it that. Wish I had some now.
We mostly add in blue crabs.
I was looking for crab to add to it today. I was unimpressed with the selection at the local grocery store. I’ve heard the dish called Frogmore Stew before.
The crabs in my area have been small as well. Hope they look better for the 4th; we always have a big crab boil to go along with the barbeque spareribs.
That sounds like my kind of celebration! I hickory smoke ribs in a maple rub once or twice a month.
How was the movie yesterday ??
Good! We’ve seen two movies this weekend. There was How to Train Your Dragon 2 yesterday and there was Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs this morning. The kids got a package offer at school from the local theatre. You get 10 movies, none of which are new releases, and discounted kiddie sized popcorn and soda trays. The packages are $5 each! We got 4 of them, so the four of us are seeing ten movies for a total of $20! This week it was Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Both movies were well done and entertaining. On the way out of How to Train Your Dragon, my son held the door for a little girl and wound up stuck holding it for the rest of the theatre. You and your wife are raising wonderful, thoughtful, kind people. I will never forget the video you posted at the orange place one Sunday. You had just adopted a kitten and your daughter was petting kitty a little rough ( the kids were 4 & 5) and your son took his sister hand (that she was petting the kittie with) and kissed it. He was so gentle and kind. Some kids might have fought or yelled at each other. You have taught them to be kind I am sure not only by words but in how you treat your wife and others.
Thanks for the kind words. I remember that video. I love when the moments happen that show us what we’re doing is working. The kids squabble a bit. Todd has a serious rotten streak that he may or may not have learned from his paternal example in life. He picks at Lila and she snaps quickly, but that’s how siblings work. They love each other though.
That made my night! Thanks for finding and sharing it.
Heh, I am just the messenger.

Oh please such nonsense, Obama breaks chipotle etiquette. Let me go listen to FLOTUS and Robin again.
Collector’s item, for sure!
LMAO! I don’t think that was a mistake by any means. 🙂 PBO’s image SELLS….
How is that even possible?
Wowowow.

My interview will air on @CNN throughout the day.
In a boring tiresome loop.
Every time I turn on the news, some government agency is under severe attack…
Now, they’re back in the IRS again.
So, I changed the channel.
That said, if government agencies know that the GOP is coming after them in order to embarrass this president, you would think they would have all their Ducks in order.
Turn on the music channel! Or Animal Planet! No government stories on those. 🙂
This is bad. It has a mortality rate of 9 out of ten people.
The city afflicted is near an international airport. 😦
As the years go by I gain more and more respect and admiration for this man.
Good Morning TODVille!

I think everyone (including those who claim to hate him) would love to follow our President around for a day or more – he’s just THAT interesting! 🙂 🙂
I don’t know. Maybe half a day. At least until The Big Valley came on. Or NFL Today one of the two.
HALF a day?
I say TWO DAYS, and my decision as a judge is final!
🙂 🙂
Well I guess I’d have to DVR The Big Valley but what the hey. Two days it is! Can he get Me TV on his Ipad?
Why yes he can! 🙂 🙂 🙂
