White House: A Historic Day For Our Judiciary
This morning, the Senate confirmed three federal judges. On the one hand, they are not unique; like all of the President’s judges and judicial nominees, they have the necessary intellect, experience, integrity, and temperament. But they are special in that each of them is a trailblazer on their courts:
Judge Darrin Gayles, confirmed to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, is the first openly gay African American man to be confirmed as a lifetime-appointed federal judge in our nation’s history.
Judge Salvador Mendoza, confirmed to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington, is the first Hispanic judge to serve on his court.
Staci Yandle, confirmed to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, is the first African American to serve on her court and the first openly gay lifetime-appointed federal judge in Illinois.

Today’s confirmations also set historic milestones: For the first time in history, the Senate has confirmed two openly gay judges on the same day. President Obama has now appointed more female judges than any other President, breaking the record previously set by President Clinton. President Obama also has now appointed more Hispanic judges than any other President, breaking the record previously held by President George W. Bush. As we’ve said before, these “firsts” — and these milestones — are important, not because these judges will consider cases differently, but because a judiciary that better resembles our nation instills even greater confidence in our justice system, and because these judges will serve as role models for generations of lawyers to come. Congratulations to our newest federal judges, who we are confident will serve with honor, distinction, and fidelity to the rule of law.
CONGRATS LL!
Hope you’re having a BEAUTIFUL evening with Mrs. LL : )
Thanks for this Nerdy Wonka. Thanks for the focus on PO’s accomplishments. Serves as a reminder why we need to stay focused on 2014 elections.
And, to reiterate:
That was in 2013, but I have a feeling it still holds.
Thanks, Nospin.
Wonderful posts today NW – it has been a joy catching up on all the news.
Thanks, 99ts.
Ahh, evangelicals!

“When the FBI approached Winters at about 8:40 a.m. Monday, he drove away and then fled on foot, according to the FBI”. What’s wrong with the FBI? They can’t out run this overweight old guy?
Sooooo nice Nerdy Wonka….
THANK YOU!!!!
No wonder Bubba is always mad; hell, President Obama is knocking the ball out of the field. This is what America looks like.
The Hill and Bubba are itching for ONE more shot at the WH, they want to out do the “real” black President.
he should be ashamed of himself. No moral compass.
Wanted to live off the government – they all want to be paid to rant and rave – he knew he couldn’t win this seat at a GOPer.
Yep they want a part time job that pays full time with the best healthcare so they can deny it to the rest of the country……and will lie, cheat, steal, to get it if they can get away with it…..
Now does he change his name back! LOL
Karma working overtime
Looks like Dmitry doesn’t have kind words for international support that is based on words and not actions. Putin seems to be escalating the provocations. He has learned nothing and every word he’s spoken has been a lie.
Yep!!
Thanks NerdyWonka. I guess with these Pres Obama accomplishments, it is time for GLAAD to give Bill Clinton another award. Ugh!
I guess Rick Perry is up for the next award!
Rachel displaying the absolute stupid of John McCain – and why the rest of the media does not do the same ???
Happy Wednesday afternoon 99ts!
Hope you’re having a WONDERFUL DAY!!!
Dr. Maddow is eating these A _ _ holes up and serving them up for a repuke potluck. She annihilated “old man” bitter McCain; attacked him like a pit bull and didn’t let go; forever exposing these right wings, nut wings repukes.
This is the way truth should be exposed; name the liars, show their mugs across the screen and call them out for the BS that they are trying to get the American people to drink.
Without saying the words – she also noted that if PBO is for it – the GOP in congress are against it. She is suggesting PBO should ask congress to authorize war in Iraq – and watch them say NO WAY.
That would shut the over zealous war mongers up; call them out, make them vote on it and expose their arrsesss for what they are.
We the people should start a hash tag; #which repuke Congressman/woman do we send to Irag to fight for America?
Whether he’s invited on all of the Sunday shows or not, or Rachel’s using her hour to put him down, we need to move on from McCain and get busy on the November 2014 election! Democrats with a mic and a camera need to start getting it. McCain is history, unless we open the book back up on him, at some future time, to read what asinine thing he did in the 21st Century. Today’s conversation on MSNBC should be all about President Obama’s accomplishments, and why Dems need to take back both houses of Congress! This is why I no longer watch MSNBC every day, except for Rev. Al and the occasional Lawrence show (when he’s on) … until they get it, they are also HISTORY to me. Rehashing old politics is a waste of time, a mic, and a camera.
There was a very good piece on about Health care – which was good to see – and while attacking McCain, Rachel pointed out the logic of PBO and what he may/may not do in Iraq – compared to the absolute stupid of McCain.
Regardless as to what she says – Rachel is virtually the ONLY pundit who gives the President credit for what he does. She attacked every network (including her own) for the people they interview about Iraq.
Used to be a big fan, but I will never forget the look on her face on election night 2008 when her HRC didn’t win. I won’t forget all of her ups and downs in the ensuing years. (Fool me once, etc.) Gave her every opportunity to consistently support the President and offer something positive, but to me that consistency never happened. She’s too fickle and juvenile for my own particular tastes, and her show has been a big waste of the intellect she does have. I know you’re a fan, as are many, and we all have different opinions – luckily, we’re not puppets like RWNJs, since we all actually have brains – but that’s my strongly held opinion.
remember when she was screaming with her hair on fire why PBO would not do an “executive order” to overturn DADT and DOMA. Many in the LGBT community did not support him and even now still not entirely all this president has done to dramatically change the hearts and minds of people who were against marriage equality and after the president came out for marriage equality the barriers will be gone in the majority if not all of America.
Not sure I ever heard an apology out of any of them, for doubting him, either. #FORWARD !!!!
JOB, you are right on target. We play the GOP game if we let their idiot spokespeople distract our attention and shift our eyes from November. We get so exhausted from outrage that we don’t have time to make the phone calls, or walk the blocks or register new voters. We’ve got one goal and one alone–to work like hell and win in November. The president is doing everything he can to raise dollars and rally the troops. But we’ve got the do the heavy lifting at the local level.
As has been said by you and others so many times, it’s the work done at the local level that’ll help fix things! Thank you so much for everything you do, jackieG, and will continue doing!
JOB and jackieG., you both hit it dead center on the nail. One of the many things we can say about President Barack Obama that has been true to the very core of this great man is: ‘He Has Been Consistent With Us All The Time’…That is a key to the very essence of what Bobfr has constantly reminded us all: “TRUSTBARACK.”
See, the pundits including RM have not TrustedBarack. I know that is a very serious statement, but wait, look at their actions:
How they flip and flop on him since day one.
How they try to control his every move; never did it to any other president in my lifetime.
Never called the vile, ugly, lying, for what it really is: He Is The Black Man in their Oval Office.Excuse me, one honest Senator did on the floor of the Senate: Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. Senator Whitehouse called all of them out, and he did not mince words. He said what we all saw and were thinking from the beginning of this treatment of PBO.
He just cannot run “our” country like the other presidents because he had no business being there in the first place(forget that we, the people made it happen)
Things that have been overlooked or just plain did not Matter to them ; he gets it done, and they still will NOT talk about it on their time and stations with honesty.
Always calling out the great accomplishments like this “black boy” should have gotten it done long ago. Who does he think he is?
They always yelled for the crazy GOPers to come out and call out the rude, racist statements, disrespectfulness, etc., When They Have the podium and the Microphones in Primetime and Offtime? Hello!!!
Never once called out their “so called friends ” from the other MSM outlets to speak truth with their words and do it with respect because after all, He is The President of the United States, President Barack H. Obama. No, that would be too right.
They built the stage from the very beginning: the campaign, debates, everything we can think of: He Should Not Be Here.
Where was the American Proudness?
They seldom stood when he entered a room or called him properly as they addressed him: Mr. President. Oh, hell no, that would be too right.
How many places do you know of that everyday supports him in good times or bad times in this country. ONE. Chips had the courage to take a stand. And here we are.
Yes, here we are. Together, Keeping His Back; Respecting Him as our President of the United States;
Give him credit for every goodness he and his administration does every day since he became our 44th President.
We celebrate daily his accomplishments with humility and pride.
We called, walked, talked to our families, friends, neighbors when we were called to come into the camp and move together for our nation under his direction;
No, we do not have to agree with everything, But We Must Respect, Be Proud, Be Encouraging, Tell the Truth About What He Has Just Said; Stand with him all the way; We have been supportive even when we were just coming off of a long election and then having to worry and wonder if the oppositions were going to let our nation go over the edge just because, just because we elected our first president who happen to Not look like the ones on the walls in the White House.
No, I do not trust them, and the few that I do, I have very clear and core faith that they mean him well.
But we do not give up; we do not let them suck us in with their pathetic tepid shout outs,
Hell no, we stay focus, keep our shoulders square, and keep working, calmly, with precision, and with doing what is right. Because it is the Right Thing To Do. He is the Best President we will ever see. Ever. HZ
I’m in near tears. That flew out of your heart, didn’t it, HZ? It’s people like you who make me know that our country is going to be just fine. It may take a while, but your kind of spirit will drown out the pathetic ones who have no spirit, those who do not know that the man we have in the White House is a gift. I’m honored to just be sitting on the same page as you are!
As you gave tribute to our fabulous President, the best in my lifetime of 67 years, I also appreciate that you gave tribute in this way:
“How many places do you know of that everyday supports him in good times or bad times in this country. ONE. Chips had the courage to take a stand. And here we are.”
And here we are. Together. Trusting Barack! Trusting each other. And, HZ, I love when your feisty spirit comes through loud and clear. HZ is Fired Up and Ready to Go!
GM my beautiful jacquelineoboomer. I did the same as I was trying to write from my heart.. We all in this family were brought together for a beautiful purpose, I do believe. And it is through this purpose we give each other daily a lift up to see over the horizon of goodness that comes from this beautiful gift we have been given, PBO.
I am with you, and JackieG, we have lived through a lot, and we know phony when we see it; if not shame on us, as my grandmother would say; but I believe we do. So it is with daily gratitude that I give humble thanks for Chips. I was just saying to myself, “Lord, I wish someday we all can meet each other and just have a ‘Gratitude Party’ for who we have become through this journey.
Jacquelineoboomer, Lord will in grace, I will be seventy in the fall; and you and I know we have a gift in our president. So when you receive a great gift, you treat it with respect, trust, and gratefulness. We are going to be fine, however, we must keep our eye on the goal of fulfilling the abundance of spreading the goodness from that gift through our individual gifts within us.
{{{{{{{{{{{{{{ Love you JOB.}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}HZ
Love you, HZ!!!! As my great grandson would say, “SOOOO much!”
Mornin’.
HZ, you are so right, so full of fire, and justice and decency. I really don’t know what all of us would do without the true moral center that you represent every day. Bless you, dear HZ. You are a national treasure whose words should be widely known.
GM, dear beautiful jackieG. You and jackieO are also two of those national treasures whose words stir my heart and I am sure all within our TOD family here. We have such a beautiful place here in Chips’ house, and I pray that I will never disrespect it or dishonor it because I realize that it is her gift that has been given to her to use in such a beautiful yet power way. I honor that.
I know we will see great day ahead with the graces that are given to us daily; but even more so, we are constantly making a way of goodness for generations to come. That is an honor to the gift of life for us, and we do not take that honor lightly here within this beautiful family. So my beautiful jackieG., {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{ Love to JackieG}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} and trust your gifts to the goodness of this day.HZ
Because why not…… 😎
What kind of writers are the justices of the Supreme Court? Scalia is reputed for writing trenchantly, Roberts and Kagan with wit, and Kennedy in garrulous and sentimental style. But what do you find if you rigorously analyze the complexity of their vocabularies?….
…Token analysis can yield surprising insights. It turns out that the relatively unknown rappers Dr. Octagon and CunninLynguists use more complex vocabularies than Shakespeare.* And as in so many areas of life, there is a trade-off between artistic merit and commercial success. Daniels quotes Jay Z, who places below the mean, explaining that “I dumbed down for my audience to double my dollars.”…..
Hip-hop artists and Supreme Court justices may have little in common (aside from their interests in the criminal justice system). But we decided to extend Daniels’ analysis to the justices. In the figure above, we also tossed in five historically famous justices, Shakespeare, and three rappers—DMX, Jay Z, and Aesop Rock. We limited ourselves to the justices’ majority opinions. (More on our code and data here.) Our subjects are arrayed along a line from least to most complex use of vocabulary. The great Chief Justice John Marshall, at the far left, receives a score of 8.7 percent, which means that in 1,000 words of one of his opinions, 87 of his words are unique and the other 913 are repetitions of those words. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, at the far right, would use 211 unique words in a 1,000-word text…..continued:
Shakespeare was the rapper of his age, playing with words and making them up to fit the situation.
LOL!
Well, well, the President, state department, CIA, Dept of Defense and Ambassador Rice got it right and..oops,,,just who was making up tales and what party was that? If Ambassador Rice wasn’t such a lady and a first-class professional, she’d be sticking her tongue out at them about now. I, on the other hand, don’t have such restraint.
You know how they are……they will say that General Petraeus got it right because he told NSA Rice to say it in the first place…..you can’t win with these idiots.
They have crawled out from under their rocks…….it was only a matter of time!
The Urgency of Immigration Reform: Attracting the World’s Best and Brightest
It has been nearly a year since the Senate passed a strongly bipartisan immigration reform bill that would fix our broken immigration system, reduce federal deficits by nearly $850 billion, and increase GDP by $1.4 trillion over the next two decades. As the economic costs of inaction continue to grow, now is the time for the House of Representatives to do its part to get a commonsense immigration reform bill to the President’s desk. Simply put: The House can and should act before August.
Throughout this week, we will highlight the urgency and importance of attracting the best and brightest talent from around the world, especially in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The Senate bill would effectively “staple” a green card to the diplomas of advanced STEM graduates from U.S. universities, so that these talented researchers have a chance to stay and contribute to our economy.
Every foreign-born graduate with an advanced STEM degree is associated with, on average, 2.6 jobs for American workers. By some estimates, immigration was responsible for one-third of the growth in patenting in past decades, and these innovations contributed to increasing U.S. GDP by 2.4 percent.

WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama decided against immediate air strikes on marauding Sunni extremists in Iraq, opting instead to pursue strategies such as providing intelligence to the Iraqi military, addressing the country’s political divisions and seeking support from regional allies.
Mr. Obama will convene a White House meeting Wednesday with Republican and Democratic leaders from the House and Senate to brief them on what officials call this new comprehensive approach.
The president wants to avoid airstrikes for now in part because U.S. military officials lack sufficient information to hit targets that would shift momentum on the battlefield. Officials say their approach also would help address underlying causes of the Sunni uprising and the collapse of Iraq’s military forces. “What the president is focused on is a comprehensive strategy, not just a quick military response,” a senior administration official said. “While there may potentially be a military component to it, it’s a much broader effort.”
Mr. Obama ultimately may decide not to order air attacks, senior U.S. officials said, bucking what for days appeared to be the leading U.S. option to counter the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, or ISIS, the terror group that has seized a large swath of Iraq’s north and west. U.S. strikes are still actively under discussion, but the officials cautioned Tuesday that they don’t expect Mr. Obama to put military action back on the table quickly, and said he may announce steps in a broader U.S. response over time. The White House and Pentagon now hold a more skeptical view of the possible effectiveness of speedy airstrikes and instead are considering deploying U.S. special operations forces to provide intelligence and battlefield advice to the Iraqi military, the U.S. officials say….continued:
Somewhat surprised, but this is a remarkably accurate and essential statement about Iraq … (try to guess the author before clicking the link 😉 )
“Can someone explain to me why the media still solicit advice about the crisis in Iraq from Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)? Or Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.)? How many times does the Beltway hawk caucus get to be wrong before we recognize that maybe, just maybe, its members don’t know what they’re talking about?
Certainly Politico could have found someone with more credibility than Douglas Feith, former undersecretary of defense for policy in the George W. Bush administration and one of the architects of the Iraq war, to comment on how the White House might react to the rapidly deteriorating political situation in Iraq today. Certainly New York Times columnist David Brooks knows what folly it is to equate President Obama’s 2011 troop removal with Bush’s 2003 invasion, as he did during a discussion with me last Friday on NPR?
Just a reminder of what that 2003 invasion led to: Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes authoritatively priced Bush’s war at more than $3 trillion. About 320,000 U.S. veterans suffer from brain injury as a result of their service. Between 500,000 and 655,000 Iraqis died, as well as more than 4,000 U.S. military members.
Yet as Brooks’s words reveal, the prevailing mindset in today’s media is to treat the 2003 invasion as if its prosecution were an act of God — like Hurricane Katrina, an inevitability that could not have been avoided. Seen this way, policymakers can ignore the idiocy of the decision to invade in the first place and can instead direct all of their critical attention to how to deal with the aftermath. It’s almost as though the mainstream media have demoted themselves from a corps of physicians, eager and able to diagnose, prognosticate and prescribe, to one of EMTs, charged instead with triaging, cleaning and cauterizing a catastrophe without investigating its underlying cause.”

Well, I am surprised, Bob. This is common sense from start to finish and I’m amazed it’s coming from Katrina Van Heuvel.

Great, Rock! You livened up the night! *waving back*

Found you and freed you, another day of WP glitchy madness!
Very kind of you, dear Chips!! Thank you!!
Oh wow, Alycee. You’re right–he must have trained with Palin. The GOP seems to perpetuate one joke after another on the American people.
His bio on Wiki says he is a fourth generation CA from Bakersfield. He also states he is or was the first Republican in his family.
Tuesday Night Question: Do dogs have a political preference?

Never in my life have I seen more people – from all walks of life – love our President the way we love our one and only current President!
Love this tweet. Thanks, JOB.
You are quite welcome – glad I found it.
I thank you also, JOB. You all have given me so much strength for my physical body in your words of wisdom and love for our beautiful president. So many moments of tears of sadness(last ride on AFOne for Jay. Listening to people who are just plain hard working Americans trying to make it and live a decent life in this country.
Hearing great news from our President and seeing him keeping his stride with grace and decency. And being here where Chips has the most brilliant minds keeping it real all day, thanks Chips and thanks to Nerdy W. who keep standing with our beautiful Chips.
Do you all know how much you mean to this President? Do you know how much you mean to this little senior who count it a blessing just to be in the company of the great minds, loving people, and caring people who really show how much they love this country and this president and VP.
I humbly thank you Chips and all of my TOD family members. You all give me so much. Now double, double triple, etc., that, and you will have you answer as to how much PBO loves each of you. Trust me on this. Goodnight everyone.HZ
Goodnight, darlin’ – sleep well when you get there. I’ll think about your writing as I go to sleep, too.

I got his back! We at TOD has his back and will do everything to get him a House and Congress that is a majority Dems to marginalize the GOP and Tea Party.
That’s right, jojo!
Republicans demand Obama put Benghazi suspect at Gitmo. Do not do it Mr. President, do not.
I wouldn’t be overly concerned. Besides, since when does PO listen to Republicans on these issues? If he did, Potus would most likely say 1. pass comprehensive immigration reform 2. pass the jobs bill 3. pass the infrastructure bill and then we can talk.
I agree nospin I bet PBO hears, “Mr. President you should blah, blah, blah, blah,….or I will go on fox news and the other rwnj news shows and blah, blah, blah.
He’s been put aboard the USS NEW YORK for the trip to New York. That should give the Feds about 10-14 days for interrogation.
President Obama departed New York for Andrews at about 10:15 p.m.
so he should be landing shortly…
LIVE NOW: President Obama’s arrival at Andrews – http://www.cbsnews.com/liveFeed/widget.shtml
Yeah!
Did anyone see PBO get off the helicopter? CBS still has the vid running but no close-ups of helicopter or PBO.
The helicopter landed a few minutes ago. You could not see anything other than it landing on the far side of the White House.
Yes. I thought we were going to actually see PBO land and step from helicopter. Why didn’t we see that?
A bus filled with politicians was driving through the countryside one day, on the campaign trail. The bus driver, caught up in the beautiful scenery, loses control and crashes into the ditch. A farmer living nearby hears the horrible crash and rushes out to discover the wreckage. Finding the politicians, he buries them.
The next day, the police come to the farm to question the man. “So you buried all the politicians?” asked the police officer. “Were they all dead?”
The farmer answered, “Some said they weren’t, but you know how politicians lie.”
I love this picture of PBO…”Don’t be mad bro” as PBO drinks their milkshake once again….hahahahahaha
perfect.
Awwwww—–sad.
Touching!

Blah blah blah…
But you called it! 🙂
Good to know.
What did he do pay al-Qaeda off with all the U.S. money he stole? Speaking of money,Hay racists right wing crazy ass haters what do you have to say about the cost of the U.S. Embassy built in Iraq was $750 Million dollars. 750 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
