The authenticity and integrity of this president is exceptional. You never sense that he’s playing games. You never sense that what he says in public is different than what he says in private. He never uses flashy rhetoric, simplistic thinking, he never tries to emotionally manipulate people. He is careful of course, and self-aware, because he knows his words are parsed and analyzed. But he’s always completely AUTHENTIC.

Another one who has that quality is vice-president Biden. I love and admire the VP too.

      • June 10, 2014 at 6:57 pm

I agree 100%. You know this is true because you can’t fool kids. I call him the pied piper. Children just flock to him.

Note: if Joe Biden was a little younger, he would be very difficult to beat in my opinion, both in the primaries and in a general election. Sadly, his age will be an issue if he decides to run. But boy I would love him to run. Because of his name recognition and his position as the VP, he would be given much more talking time in the primary debates this time around… He would be given a platform and FINALLY, FINALLY, the american people and the press would stop treating him like a joke. He is knowledgeable, intelligent, honest. He is an excellent debater. And he has charisma in spades.

Note: Bob Gates, who is a friend and ally of Hillary , made sure to bash Joe Biden in his book. Unfairly I might add. Just sayin’…

Thank you, Japa. This death toll can be fixed with the simple change of a governor and by electing sane state legislatures. The SCOTUS decision to make Medicaid expansion optional was among their vast number of heartless acts. That stupid opinion, along with the obtuseness of Republican governors, is the cause of many people dying needlessly.

The media won’t dare question the NRA or the GOPers who take $$$ from them – despite hundreds of young people being killed by mass shooters in just the last 2-3 yrs. But the same media will spend weeks upon weeks upon months harassing the President for releasing a POW – something that Presidents have done without any objection for decades.

Will Chris Matthews on *liberal* MSNBC show the same kind of rage about the NRA and the school shootings that he did just a few days ago regarding PBO’s release of Sgt Bergdahl?

They are ALL spineless, Hf. Not a single one of the current crop of so called pundits and (cough) journalists has the guts to ask tough questions of Republicans and their gun lobby enablers. Attacking the president is safe because: a) they don’t risk fatigue since all the talking points come ready-made from the GOP; b) they don’t risk threats from gun nuts; and d) they don’t risk good bonuses from their GOP bosses.

Thanks Bob for your persistence in demanding accountability! We also need to bombard law makers to put the concept of “A well regulated militia” back in the Second Amendment! ” The necessity of “A well regulated militia” is the premise of the 2nd Amendmen’t’s “right of the people to keep and bear arms.” Even in the so called “wild west,” many cities and municipalities enacted ordinances that regulated the possession and use of guns. The Second Amendment does not give individuals –including deranged people or those illegally and seditiously advocating the overthrow of the government of the United States –unlimited right to own guns of all types, including military style assault weapons.

The GOP and the NRA seem to be controlling the gun issue regardless of what the American public want. So I think their good guys (in their eyes only) need to arm themselves and offer a shoot out with the bad guys they sent over the line at the Okay Corral at dusk. We can all stay away hoping they settle the problem themselves by eliminating both sides.

I saw some tweets about Hillary waiting until the end of the year before deciding whether or not to run. I don’t care what she decides. I will decide who to support based on how hard they work and how successfully they campaign and raise money for candidates this year. The election is only a little over 5 months from now–and I am underwhelmed by Hillary’s messaging for it. As voters, we are actually the ones with the power to decide who will be our next President.

      • 82 Lovepolitics2008
        June 10, 2014 at 6:18 pm

Hillary has decided to run a long time ago. She’s simply waiting for the optimal time to announce. To be fair, the fact that she’s perceived as a sure winner makes it harder for her to decide when to announce. Because the minute she does, media people will consider her as the new leader of the democratic party and will ask her to comment on every single decision of the president. The mainstream media is going to OBSESS over the differences, rivalry between the leadership of Hillary and the leadership of President Obama. This will be very tough for both, on the personal side and on the political side.

“She’s not the answer when it comes to winning conservative women — she never was — and we’re not going to be anybody’s attack dog against Sarah Palin,” said a Clinton insider. “To be fair to Obama’s people, they haven’t asked us to do that.”

Slamming Palin to win back women already hostile to Obama is pointless, the insider said, because Clinton’s most loyal base is working-class voters, not women in particular. “Attacking Palin is checkers, attacking McCain on the economy is chess.”

Personally I don’t believe most of the folks who are committing gun violence have a mental illness. I think these folks are as POTUS stated, crazy as in not rational thinkers, right wing nut jobs, who dislike government (unless they need them), and have major issues with people who they consider “other” having rights and freedoms like every other citizen. They fear having no one to blame for their feelings of inferiority and no one to look down on as the cause of their angst.

      • June 10, 2014 at 7:30 pm

We have a tendency to want to believe that a person who would do this type of crime is some how mentally unbalanced….I do not know if they are or are not…but what I do know is that listening to hate filled rhetoric day in and day out…distorts and contaminates ones view of reality and the world…

I appreciate PBO’s comments on gun violence and agree that it is stunning that nothing has been done, especially after Newtown. I keep thinking that surely there is one person of integrity in Congress, or a group of them, who will stand up and say, “This continuing, daily violence is unacceptable. This is damaging our country. We need to make some changes, and we can’t wait one more day.” But all must be so fearful of the NRA that they, the people we elect to represent our interests, remain mute. PBO made clear that public pressure is the only thing that will ever bring sensible gun safety laws—–when those in Congress are as fearful of being voted out of office as they are of the NRA threatening to fund opponents.
Check any news site in this country any day—–there are shootings galore everywhere—–all kinds of people for all kinds of supposed reasons—–most don’t get the publicity——it’s become so commonplace—–5 here, 3 there, 30 in a weekend in Chicago. And I do think mental instability is present in almost all of the shootings—–well adjusted people aren’t shooting people—-period. But the difference, like President Obama said, is the huge proliferation of guns in this country—–it seems everyone has one now, including the mentally unstable. And whatever ticks someone off in a bad moment—-they’re pulling out their guns and shooting away—- instead of storming out of a house and slamming a door or squealing out of a parking lot or yelling swears or divorcing or maturely overlooking an irritation in a parking lot or a wrong fast food order or moving on from losing a girlfriend or anything——even if your cinnamon roll was stale—–people are shooting. And on top of all this we have FOX and hate radio stirring up the unbalanced to react in a violent way with nonstop ever escalating violent rhetoric and preposterous accusations, preying on the vulnerable, those who hate and believe conspiracy theories—–then we have a situation that is out of control.
The people need to decide that they are going to force a change. We don’t have to live in this kind of country.

Republicans have cultivated fear, hysteria for fourteen years now. Americans are weary of war, but the fear of “terrorists” is still there. In that atmosphere, releasing five Talibans is politically difficult. Political courage isn’t that common in Washington. So it’s not surprising that some democrats are running from the President.

They did the same with the ACA and other battles. The GOP is so so good at creating hysteria on everything, that some cowards in the democratic party are afraid all the time. And instead of realizing that the republicans are playing them like violins, they resent the president for making things “difficult”.

PBO is definitely THE finest President ever, ever, ever! And those Buzzfeed pics were just a drop in the bucket. I’ve seen many more that made me go mmm, mmm, mmmh! (no disrespect to FLOTUS, of course 🙂 )

Just watched the entire Tumblr Q&A and passed on the link. Our PBO is also cool, intelligent and funny, in addition to hot, I mean, fine 🙂

P.S. Only Buzzfeed link I’ve ever clicked on!

Ya mean, we’re not the only ones?—-who have noticed? The truth is EVERYONE has noticed——thus the backlash by those who can’t deal with their extreme envy.

As a retired mental health clinical counselor I want to say a word or two about these shootings. For 7 of my 30 plus years I worked as an crisis intervention specialist and involuntary commitment investigator on psychiatric cases referred for civil court commitment here in the Oregon public sector community mental health system. I worked in a rural and a metropolitan county organization. In that capacity it was my job to assess individuals for dangerousness, suicidal and homicidal potential. The literature says, and it is true, that it is virtually impossible to predict with any certainty whether someone will act out in a homicidally aggressive way towards others. The biggest predicting factor is prior history. However many of these mass shooters don’t have any history. In truth from what I can discern, many of them are not actually candidates for mental health treatment, as they are persons who have an Anti-Social Personality Disorder (Sociopath, Psychopath), and hence their main problem is the lack of control and lack of conscience. They act out for ideology or vengeance, or simple pure hate. Some cases involve persons with psychotic delusional symptoms, like Schizophrenia with Paranoid Delusions, or Major Depression. I can tell you that the involuntary commitment laws provide very little safety to the public, because commitment is not possible based on what a person “might” do, but on what they have done. And the commitment confinement is very temporary if at all. What would be helpful is a major upgrade of our mental health community services and laws that would allow for early involuntary intervention at first warning signs, and extended confinement if required. Our present system is really a “diversion” system, not a “prevention” system. It is underfunded and designed to keep people from expensive hospitalization. So the conservatives love it, and the civil libertarians love it. But it basically abandons families and communities to cope with out of control people aggressive people who eventually end up in the criminal justice system, or dead, or homicidal. So when people start looking at gun violence as a mental health problem they need to be called out on what they mean and what they are willing to do. In the meantime we need to stop arming our most dangerous people with the most lethal weapons capable of mass murder.

Thanks for sharing your expertise, Bill. It’s a huge problem. I just heard that law enforcement visited the Las Vegas shooters a month ago and didn’t find them a real threat—–referred by Homeland Security. And a similar occurrence with the Santa Barbara shooter—-parents and therapist recommended police visit, and they did not find him a threat to himself or others. Law enforcement is not equipped to make that assessment. So many of our mental hospitals have been closed, and community mental health centers are underfunded and overwhelmed. I recently heard the Chgo police chief estimate that 2/3 in the Cook Co. jail now are mentally ill, and they are not equipped to help. It is a terrible and dangerous and sad situation.
