Must be a shock to Putin to step out of his carefully controlled environment and actually discover what the rest of the world thinks of him. Frankly, Poroshenko looks like a distinguished leader; Putin looks like a sour-faced runt. He does not come off well in company with other world leaders. Do these negotiations mean that Putin will actually recognize the legitimacy of Poroshenko’s presidency?

Loved the way Christiane made it possible to shut down the negative and speak up about our president was so well received on the world stage and how he was received from the world leaders. That is how you report.. Grateful for the truth coming forth into our POTUS space. We already know it, but it is so good to hear it coming from her. I also like how our beautiful President recognized the children as he walked down the red carpet. I maybe wrong, but I did not notice any other leader who walked that carpet extend their hands and actually talked while walking with those precious young children. It was a beautiful sight to behold.HZ

Yes, Vicki. POWs must be repatriated at the end of combat.

“III Geneva Convention mandates that POWs be released at the end of a conflict/war. Since at least 1648’s “Peace of Westphalia” which ended the Thirty Year’s War, both sides of a conflict release POWs at the end of a conflict and/or war. WWII ended in 1945, ten years before the United States ratified III Geneva Convention in 1955. In spite of not having a ratified Treaty, the United States attributes the release and repatriation Japanese POWs at the end of WWII to the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648.”

The source is the Orange place but the diary is very useful because of the input from Colonel Morris “Moe” Davis, United States Air Force officer, lawyer & third Chief Prosecutor of the Guantanamo Military commissions.

This is a very well written article…

COLLEVILLE-SUR-MER, France (AP) — Gone are the screaming shells, seasick soldiers and bloodied waters of 1944. On Friday, a sun-splattered Normandy celebrated peace, with silent salutes, tears and international friendship marking 70 years since the D-Day invasion helped change the course of World War II and modern history.

Not many of the 150,000 Allied soldiers who slogged onto storm-torn beaches or parachuted into Normandy remain alive to pass on the legacy of that “longest day.” Some survivors stood, somber-faced and proud, alongside President Barack Obama and French President Francois Hollande as they paid tribute to history’s biggest amphibious invasion.

The veterans’ hands, which once wrested France from Nazi occupation, saluted wizened faces. Some rose to their feet with difficulty. Thousands of onlookers applauded.

“France will never forget what it owes these soldiers, what it owes the United States,” Hollande said at the Normandy American Cemetery on a bluff overlooking Omaha Beach.

“Vive l’Amerique! Vive la France! And long live the memory of those who fell here for our liberty.”

Investigators believe alcohol may have been a factor in a Thursday incident where a Michigan man fired his shotgun at two vacuum cleaner salesmen, Grand Rapids TV station WOOD reported.

The Isabella County Sheriff’s Department said that the two salesman knocked on the door of a home in Fremont Township, where the suspect gestured from inside the home to indicate that he would attend to them in a moment.

The salesmen became suspicious when the suspect walked out of the home to his garage, however, and decided to leave. The suspect then allegedly fired two shots with a 20-gauge shotgun as the men drove away, according to the sheriff’s department.

No one was hurt in the incident. Investigators believe alcohol could have been a factor, the sheriff’s department said, and the suspect faces charges of assault and reckless discharge of a firearm.

An 89-year-old World War II veteran reported missing Thursday evening actually fled his nursing home in England to attend the 70th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy on Friday.

The Pines care home in Hove, England, where Bernard Jordan has been living with his wife since January, telephoned police Thursday after realizing Jordan hadn’t returned from his morning walk, according to local media. Police said the veteran, who was also a former mayor of Hove, left wearing his war medals concealed beneath a gray jacket.

Please help me post his twitpic here. I just don’t understand why it was not made it possible for this obviously strong determined 89 yrs old to be at D-Day70 in France.

Thank you Nerdy for this YouTube!

Once again I open TOD and my day is made! The past week has really saddened me, the way the right-wing and newstainment complex has treated a POW and his family because he committed the crime of being rescued by PBO. This has seemed just the lowest of the low.

Now, today, seeing that YouTube of the President entering to resounding, overwhelming cheers, hearing Christine Amanpour acknowledge how loved our PBO is around the world, and seeing the opposite reaction for Putin, I am uplifted and reassured. The far-right and far-left both in this country and around the world seem to be the loudest voices, and the sheer volume of their vitriol, resentment and hate is so overwhelming, they succeed in convincing folks that their numbers are as great as their voices are loud.

Now, looking at this YouTube, I am reminded that people here and all over the world DO recognize the quality of this great man. Our first black president also happens to be one of our greatest presidents (and I suspect time will show THE greatest), our most liberal president, and the first president in my lifetime who is truly of and for the people. He is both a strong leader AND a great humanitarian. The powers that be cannot stand this and they try to convince us the majority thinks as they do. Then, every once in a while, evidence such as this manages to get through the news/noise machine and we can see that the right/wing/corporate/libertarian emperor has no clothes. Our President Barack Obama is loved, admired and respected around the world.

Today is another great day and I am so grateful to be alive during the PBO Presidency.

O.k.. now to go catch up on the day’s posts….

MS, every day we need to remind ourselves that the loudest do not represent the majority. Appreciate your saying what my husband reminds me of every time I get upset–They are not the majority of Americans.

Good for your hubby! I think the fact that us TODers pay attention to what’s happening and keep up with alternate media is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, I get to see much more of the good that is happening, on the other, I also am witness to the ugliness on twitter, etc. that is put out there by those loud, hateful voices. I have to remind myself that most of those voices are screaming from behind keyboards and smartphones and not doing much else 🙂

PARIS — Rafael Nadal is going for No. 9 at the French Open, and the only man who can stop him is Novak Djokovic.

Nadal is already a record eight-time champion with a 65-1 career record at Roland Garros. One more victory on the red clay would make him the first man to win five in a row and give him his 14th Grand Slam title — a tie in second place with Pete Sampras.

The top-seeded Spaniard reached the final by beating Wimbledon champion Andy Murray 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 Friday on Court Philippe Chatrier, the stadium Nadal calls his favorite place to play. Djokovic defeated Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the first semifinal.

Nadal has beaten Djokovic at the French Open in all five of their meetings, starting with a quarterfinal victory in 2006. They also met in the semifinals in 2007, ’08 and ’13, and in the final in 2012.

It will be tough, but Nadal, Go Get the Trophy on Sunday.

This story makes me all mushy!!!

A British World War II veteran who was reported missing from his nursing home on Thursday night turned up on the beach in Normandy — wearing his medals — during the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion on Friday.

Bernard Jordan, 89, left The Pines, a nursing home in Hove, England, on Thursday morning and did not return that night. Dressed in a gray raincoat with a jacket underneath that had his medals pinned to it, Jordan took a bus to France to be there for the anniversary of the largest amphibious assault in history, according to a report by The Guardian. Meanwhile, the nursing home reported him missing to the Sussex Police at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, resulting in a search of the area and local hospitals.

President Barack Obama and other world leaders participated in a televised ceremony Friday to honor the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. While Queen Elizabeth II was being introduced, the camera cut to Obama — who was caught chewing gum.

At least a few French Twitter users were not amused. Their tweets were first noticed by the Daily Dot. Here are some of the not-so-positive messages for the leader of the free world, with translations afterward:

The president has been chewing gum since he stopped smoking. It’s healthier than smoking, doesn’t affect anyone’s ability to breathe and is sometimes even recommended by a dentist (as happened with Mr. G).

Love, love the President, but I’m surprised he has such a dependency on nicotine gum after all these years. Please don’t scream at me folks, but I would prefer it if he didn’t chew gum during solemn ceremonies. Would we squirm if someone like Queen Elisabeth chew gum during ceremonies? If the answer is yes, we have to ask President Obama to make a little effort… He’s already the embodiment in refinement… he just needs to correct this and then he will be PERFECT !!

That being said, watch the mainstream media; they’ll jump on this. This is the only imperfection of the president and they will be MORE THAN HAPPY to use it in order to diminish him. The loud applauds of today must have made them squirm… And quick, quick they’re searching for something, something bad to say. NO WAY they’re going to let President Obama win the day…

President Obama will be the first to tell you that he is not perfect and never will proclaim to be so; however, this is not the first time PBO has been chewing gum. I would just say as meta said along with GGail: Is it know that it is nicotine gum. I am not worried about the fact that PBO has something in his mouth that causes him to move his jaws up, down, sideways, or whatever; he is still performing his duties better than any president in my lifetime.

One thing for sure when facts about the president’s personal habits of this nature are well known by the president and his team. Trust me. There are reasons that we do not have to be concerned about. Chewing in public is the last thing that I would be concerned about with PBO. He has , trust me, more things that are paramount in his duties to focus on. Let the right, left, center, forward, backward go at it; they do not seem to care about the truth.

As GGail said,,”We need to be careful…….” Indeed we really do. Let it move on. Trust me on this one. We do need to be careful….HZ

They have overdosed on haterade. Literally searching high and low for some negativity toward PBO. They are mentally ill, deranged, petty and infantile. O Layla, your video had *my* favourite in the background. This one will make you laugh too! I don’t understand how come the little lad didn’t get tired, but near the end I ❤ ❤ the reason he gives for enjoying dancing.

It never gets old having a president that is beloved over seas. It feels so much better after those 8 years of embarrassment under Boosh Jr.

Notice how today’s jobs report indicates that healthcare jobs have been experiencing growth over the last 2 months at double the rate that they had in the last 12 months. That is because Obamacare is a stealth stimulus package. Significantly increased access and affordability of healthcare has creates demand. It is demand, not supply but demand which creates jobs. In fact, it is demand in the presence of insufficient supply which triggers expansion and hiring. Once again, observable reality puts the lie to right wing stupidity.

Bob Bergdahl spoke at a Republican Fundraiser when Michael Steele was the RNC chairman.

Yet Steele has been on Hardball early this week attacking POTUS and the action taken to get their son back?

Layla, the talking point should read: The president didn’t talk to them…until he did??

I did notice that the Bergdahls never thanked the President in any of their public statements. It was a noticeable omission to me.

Interesting. This shit really annoys me. The President didn’t send them a postcard, so they’re sure it was because they weren’t democrats. Ridiculous!

After their treatment by their Republican friends this week, I wonder if they’ll be voting republican in the future?

I noticed it, too. PBO was exceedingly gracious to them at the announcement. I wonder how they really feel about him now.

Right on meta. How is the hell did they think all of this was being worked out? Hello. President Barack Obama is the darn President. He is the CIC. He listens but he call the orders.

I need to shut up because I will not get into this. My private and personal reasons. I do know one thing, President Barack Obama can be trusted to do the right thing and he damn well care to do the proper thing while he is protecting the American people. When will people get this shit right. I am mad as hell right now. Need to stop because I do not want to mess up our beautiful space and disrespect our Chips, Nerdy W. , and my TOD family.

I am just getting to read quietly everything now; but I better just read and not comment. I am just tired of all of the ugly crap. I am just tired.

Thanks Chips, Nerdy W., LL, Amk, Donna, CaroMae, DF., MightyPamela, Meta, GGail, Tally, Jackie, Jacqueline O. JER, and our wonderful Bobfr., and all of the beautiful and brilliant TOD team contributors for doing such a brilliant job in our beautiful haven here.

I just will not disrespect this space or hurt anyone with my comments; so I better say good night and go back and finish creating my space in two rooms for my yoga and my gifts of appreciation for my quiet time for our First Lady and Second Lady. Our POTUS and VPOTUS all have a space in my music/library room where I have a lovely space for my loving brother.

I am fine; I just need to watch my tongue. {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{ I Love my TOD family.}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Forgive me please. My heart is so full from personal cares of trying to help some neighbors, and the beautiful historical ceremony today. Heart is so full. But joy cometh in the morning.HZ

You are wonderful. In every way! So no apologies necessary. I hope you get some good rest and feel refreshed in the new day.

The DDay events were very emotional. Lots of memories and feelings and values stirred up. Our POTUS presented the world with a humane and beautiful alternative – dignity, poise, love. I couldn’t be prouder.

            Love you, HZ!!

PBO also mentioned in his speech that Cory, the wounded warrior that he introduced at the SOTU, has recuperated enough that he jumped from an airplane. Wowie.

WASHINGTON — The State Department is financing a new 24-hour satellite television channel in the turbulent northern region of Nigeria that American officials say is crucial to countering the extremism of radical groups such as Boko Haram. The move signals a ramping up of American counterinsurgency efforts to directly challenge the terrorist group, which abducted nearly 300 Nigerian schoolgirls in April.

State Department officials acknowledged that setting up an American-supported channel could prove challenging in a region where massacres, bombings and shootings by Boko Haram are common, and where the American government and Western educational programs are far from popular. The group has been known to attack media organizations in Nigeria.
