Laura Smith-Spark: Obama Warns Russia Of Further Costs If It Continues Ukraine Meddling

U.S. President Barack Obama had stern words for his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin over Russia’s actions in Ukraine, following a meeting Thursday of G7 leaders in Brussels, Belgium, from which Russia was excluded. Putin “has a chance to get back into a lane of international law,” Obama said. But for this to happen, he said, Putin must take steps over the coming weeks that include recognizing Ukraine’s new President-elect Petro Poroshenko, stopping the flow of weapons over the border into Ukraine, and ceasing Russian support for pro-Russia separatists in Ukraine. “We cannot simply allow drift,” Obama said, speaking alongside British Prime Minister David Cameron following bilateral talks. “The mere fact that some of the Russian soldiers have moved back from the border and that Russia is now destabilizing Ukraine through surrogates, rather than overtly and explicitly, does not mean that we can afford three months, or four months, or six months, of continued violence and conflict in eastern Ukraine.”

If Russia does not de-escalate the situation, the G7 leaders are united and ready to impose further painful economic sanctions, Obama said, with consequences for the Russian people. “Today, in contrast to a growing global economy, a sluggish Russian economy is even weaker because of the choices made by Russia’s leadership,” he said. Putin was excluded from what was originally planned as a G8 summit in Sochi, Russia, as part of measures to sanction Moscow over its annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region. It’s the first time in some 20 years that Russia has not been part of the meeting of world economic powers, Obama said, adding that the step is warranted because Moscow’s actions have violated international law and gone against the group’s principles.

But I have a dumb question: why the hell did the administration ‘apologize’ for the oversight of not notifying Congress?

They should be more sophisticated now in these responses. They get zero points for taking the high road. It reminds me of rushing out in outrage over the IRS scandal which – apparently like this instance – was NOT what was being portrayed anyway.

I’m assuming they were apologizing for not notifying Congress right before taking the action. But that apology was apparently unnecessary.

          June 5, 2014 at 4:48 pm

Well the word ‘apology’ was used – that gives pours gas on the fire. According to Levin’s statement, they were notified. I’ve read that, yes, many in Congress were against this swap.

A couple of points are becoming lost in this fog of ‘reporting’:

Being required to report the action is not the same as ‘advise and consent’. Consent is not necessary. Everyone is acting as if John McCain had a veto over the President’s actions. And PBO’s signing statement is righteously combative: Congress is trying to strip this President of the rights and duties of the Executive Branch and that these actions by Congress are most likely unconstitutional. Trust me, if one of these RWNJ’s get into office these requirements will vanish, just like the Independent Counsel statute.

Restrictions for Democrats, free rides for Republicans.

Pick which President has been the correct match for the 21st Century:

____ President Obama on Russia and the situation in Ukraine: “Mr. Putin has the chance to get back into a lane of international law.”

____ GWB: “You’re either for us, or against us.”

“Bouchard, 20, lost to Russian tennis veteran Maria Sharapova, 27, in the semifinals, with a match score of with a final score of 4-6, 7-5, 2-6. The women are ranked numbers 18 and seven respectively in the WTA.

Though her loss kept her from becoming the first Canadian to ever make it to the finals of the French Open, this has been an impressive run for Bouchard, who jumped from a ranking of 144 at the beginning of this full season to 18.”

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A real gun was found in the toy aisle of Target on Seaboard Street. The police report states a loss prevention worker stumbled upon the gun Friday night.

The gun was in plain view on top of a superhero Playskool toy box when the worker found it; he thought it was a toy. He realized it was real after seeing it was loaded with live ammo.

The fact that it was found in an aisle geared toward children makes some shoppers feel this was no accident.

“I don’t think someone would accidentally drop off a gun. I think he purposely left it there for a child to pick up and think, ‘Oh it’s a toy gun,’ and accidentally point it at somebody and it goes off,” says Kennedy McClain.

Now this is a surprise……especially from Labrador.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho) chastised some members of his party Tuesday for their reaction to the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, saying they should stop acting like the prisoner swap President Barack Obama arranged was unprecedented.

“I’m a little bit disturbed by some of the Republicans out there who keep saying this has never happened before,” Labrador said during an interview with the radio station 670 KBOI in Boise, Idaho. “That is not entirely true. If you look historically, at the end of any conflict, you have a swap of prisoners, and that happens. Usually our side will release people that are less than desirable in order to get some of our people back in these swaps. So I would suggest that anybody who’s being hyper-critical about this, they should look at the history. This has happened before.”

    • 114 japa21
      June 5, 2014 at 2:35 pm

Notice only ID Republicans are coming out with this reasonable talk. Labrador is up for reelection and I wonder if he thinks he would lose if he didn’t. Would he be saying the same thing if Bergdahl was from IL.

They will not let it go. I was so proud that PBO told the reporter that he make no apologies for rescuing this young man.
